The Marigold
It was today.
Today's the day, and Denki's more ready than ever.
Hyacinth glanced over at Denki, "You good?"
Denki took a deep breath, "Yeah," He replied wistfully, "I'm good." He was doing more than good, he was doing excellent. He was ready, the Garden was going down. And Denki can't wait to see it happen. "Today's the day."
"Today's the day."
~~~
Denki had been paired with Midnight for this mission and Hyacinth with Eraserhead. The two had separated a long time ago, and now Denki was leading Midnight through the base. He knew the corners like they were the back of his hand. As he stared into rooms, he was reminded of what they did in said rooms, what he did in said rooms.
(He remembered his first lesson by looking into the nursery.
"Marigold, they're so cute, right?" The caretaker asked, "You should hold one, here."
Marigold was handed a baby and instantly, his heart melted. The baby was absolutely adorable, and even if he's an assassin in training, he can't resist it. Its lilac eyes looked up at Denki in a curiosity he wished he had. "What's its name?"
The caretaker shrugged, "It won't have one."
Denki's brain roared to a halt, "What?" He didn't believe what he was hearing.
"It won't live long, Marigold," The caretaker said, "Why don't you end its pain sooner?"
"Why won't it live long?"
"Birth defect," The caretaker's voice was hollow, sending shivers down Denki's spine, "Even as a duplici, it can't do anything." The caretaker picked up another child, "You see, Marigold, somethings just don't deserve to live."
"That's your first lesson of assassination today," The caretaker carefully balanced the child on one arm and handed him a knife, "Somethings don't deserve to live. And that's why you exist. People like you eliminate them."
"You can't show an exception for anything, Marigold. Not even, a new life."
That baby didn't live long, but Denki was too detached to care.)
"Marigold!" Midnight whispered, "You good?"
"Ah, yeah," Denki replied, his voice as inaudible as possible, "Just thinking, sorry." Its name should've been Lilac. "We have to make it to the atrium - or the residential areas. Or even the reactor room, they have to be in one of those rooms."
Midnight nodded, "Let's go."
"Yeah, let's."
~~~
Hyacinth was with Eraserhead. "We have to check the training rooms, interrogation rooms and security," He whispered, "The others are probably checking the other rooms." Eraserhead didn't reply, and Hyacinth took that as a sign to keep going.
Eventually they ran into someone, and it wasn't someone Hyacinth expected.
" Iris?" Hyacinth hadn't seen Iris in a while, hell, he didn't want to see Iris for a while . Last time he saw Iris, she had killed one of his only friends and then sprinted. Hyacinth never got the full story, and he doesn't think he wants to. But from there, he knew that Iris never escaped the endless loop of only death.
Hyacinth doesn't know whether to despise or pity her.
"Hyacinth?" Iris asked. Her eyes widened, "Holy shit, it's actually you."
"You don't say," Hyacinth snapped back, "Maybe I might be an auditory hallucination."
"Hyacinth, who's this?" Eraserhead asked.
"Iris, one of my friends," Hyacinth answered. "Iris, what are you doing here?"
"What are you doing here?" Iris asked, "I get you guys are raiding the Garden, but you're in the Archives. Really? The Archives? For what?"
"Evidence," Hyacinth said.
"I thought you were getting back the students."
"We are," Eraserhead spoke up.
"No you're not," Iris grinned, "Because I already took them! They're safe, Eraser! I took them out from the Garden yesterday, since the Overseer was going to let 'em rot today." She then adds, "There's a bunch of kids not here right now."
"What did you do?"
"I helped them leave," Iris replied, "I helped them leave, Hyacinth. "
And suddenly, everything clicked into place. No wonder they'd run into Iris in the Archives. She was probably giving the children their names, or the addresses of their parents - "You're fucking insane," Hyacinth said, "The Garden is probably out for blood. "
"And? We can't be the only ones that escape, Hyacinth! There's so many others, that need so much help -"
Eraserhead sighed, "Collect the evidence, The Garden is going down. "
Hyacinth smirked, of course Eraserhead would do that. Everyone and their mothers know that Eraserhead has a soft spot for children. "Just to make sure, Izuku and Ashido are out, right?"
"Yep!" Iris responded, "They're out of the building."
"And soon, the Garden's going to be out of service."
~~~
"Reporting in, Marigold to Hyacinth," Denki said over the walkie-talkie.
The device crackled to life almost instantly, "Hyacinth answering. Marigold, the students have already been escorted out."
Denki and Midnight made eye contact, and then turned back to the small device, "Marigold here. By who?"
"Iris."
"Hey, Marigold!" A voice a bit too recognizable replied in the background, "Ain't it nice t'talk to you again?"
"Right. So, do we stop the mission right here then?" Denki asked. UA didn't like to waste their time and resources on unworthy endeavors, that was easily seen with their no tolerance policy and Aizawa's ruthless teaching style.
"Nope," Hyacinth answered, "Nedzu decided to shut down the Garden, because apparently, they'll be too much of a problem in the near future."
From a strategic standpoint, Denki could see where Nedzu was coming from. If the LOV paired with the Garden, then that'd be a real issue for UA. Seeing as there's already one criminal organization targeting UA, to eliminate another one would be efficient. "Okay," Denki replied, "Tell me what I need to do."
"We're going to head to Security and Iris is evacuating the kids. We need you to head to the Engine room or Reactor and shut this facility down."
Denki looked at Midnight, "With Midnight?"
"Yes," Hyacinth replied, "If you run into anyone, you know the rules."
"Got it," Denki said, "Okay, Marigold out."
"Hyacinth, out."
"We need to get moving," Midnight said. "Where's the reactor, or the engine room?"
Denki paused, thinking back in his memory, "There's the reactor that powers the regular electricity. It's down in Maintenance, but to get there we need a security badge. The engine room is also down in Maintenance, but it's near the atrium. We were already heading towards the atrium - we can just head that way."
Midnight nodded, "Alright. Anything we should expect?"
"Guards, nothing more. The caretakers are always at the nursery, and it's so late that no one's in the atrium."
Midnight said, "Got it. Let's go."
~~~
"Who are you?"
It was a voice that Iris hadn't heard in years. It was one of the toddlers that she had played with back in her time here - of course they don't remember her, and that was sort of disheartening. "I'm Iris."
The child immediately folded in on themselves, making the appearance that they were smaller. "What are you here for?"
"I want to take you from this place to a better one," Iris crouched in front of the child, "One with no pain, just all happy and smiles."
"But isn't that weak?" The child's eyes bore into Iris' soul, "To feel pain is to be strong."
"To feel both pain and happiness is to be wise," Iris replied, "You might be alive but you aren't living. I want to give you and your friends a life." Iris looked at the children crowding behind the child she was talking to, "Get the rest of them, wake 'em up. We're leaving."
"And we're leaving them behind a storm."
~~~
"Ah, Hyacinth," A voice made Hyacinth freeze and his blood run cold. It was a voice Hyacinth hoped he'd never hear again.
But clearly that hope was naive.
He had made a bad decision and separated with Eraserhead briefly, since that'd cover more space. Iris was off collecting the children, so Hyacinth was tasked with taking out some of the security force. Eraserhead was taking out the other half.
So of course it was Hyacinth's luck that he ran into the Overseer of all people. "Overseer."
"You know, you had so much potential," The Overseer brought back memories that Hyacinth didn't want to live through ever again.
Back when Hyacinth was just a toddler, the Overseer had taken a specific interest in him. That led to Hyacinth being personally trained by the Overseer.
(He always hated that training.)
"Potential for what?" Hyacinth asked.
The Overseer completely ignored the question, "You would've been an amazing Overseer for the next generation. I saw it in you, you had amazing leadership. The way that you led Iris and Marigold was absolutely genius. You would've been amazing."
Of course they know my quirk - "I am amazing. You're talking as if my worth has downgraded..."
"Oh but it has! You've been brainwashed by these heroes -"
"Brainwashed? You know what my quirk is, right?"
"That doesn't -"
Snap. "Turn around and hand yourself into the authorities."
Nice try Hyacinth.
"No, no, no -" Hyacinth looked around and at the Overseer, who had snapped out of his quirk, "Get out of my head!"
"Only if you get out of mine," The Overseer grinned as they stalked forward, "Let's make a deal."
Hyacinth glared at them, "I refuse to make a deal with you." Hyacinth touched his knife which was firmly strapped onto his left thigh, "Your deals were always sucky, anyways."
And that's when Hyacinth felt it happen. The pressure in the room increased to a near unbearable level, leaving Hyacinth desperately trying to get air.
"You can't use your quirk if you can't talk."
If there's one thing Hyacinth learned in the Garden, is that you don't need your quirk for everything. Yes, it might be hard to move, but Hyacinth had to do something.
Even if it was kicking a rock.
Well, it wasn't exactly a rock, but the knife he had dropped in the pressure increase.
Hyacinth kicked it at an angle, it stabbed The Overseer's foot. The sudden onslaught of pain made the quirk drop for a second.
But sometimes, a second is all you need.
And Hyacinth can't have him turn on that quirk again.
Hyacinth launched themselves at the Overseer, breaking their nose, which kept them grounded for a second. He grabbed the knife from the floor, which was behind the Overseer. Now behind the Overseer, he kicked the Overseer's legs from under them. Hyacinth finished the move like he was taught,
A knife to the throat.
"You speak, I slice. You call anyone, I slice," Hyacinth's voice was soft and low. If anyone were to walk in on this moment, it'd be a disaster. "You use your quirk and you lose your head." Judging by the sudden shaking of the Overseer's hands, Hyacinth assumed that they got the message.
Hyacinth had always thought that the Overseer was a high ranked being. That the Overseer couldn't be touched. The Overseer constantly had guards around them, the fact that they came here with none of them was pure stupidity. But an excellent underestimation for Hyacinth. They think I forgot my skills? That's funny, as if someone would forget anything that goes on in the Garden. "You're lucky my agenda for revenge isn't so strong, or you wouldn't be breathing," Hyacinth muttered, "Give me your ID card."
" Now."
The Overseer quickly lifted up their ID card. Hyacinth took it from their hand roughly, "Thanks." Hyacinth kicked them down, "Now, what do you think is going to happen now?"
"What?"
" You're going to forget you saw me." Hyacinth grinned, he was finally at the top. After years of being the Overseer's pet, it felt liberating, "You're going to deactivate the Garden's security system and make the guards sit back."
"And finally, you're never going to use your quirk on another person again." Hyacinth walked away from the Overseer, "Have fun and follow orders. "
Safe to say, Hyacinth left very satisfied.
~~~
Denki and Midnight stumbled upon the labs.
"Oh," Denki immediately recognized this place. His quirk was a rare one, and they took liberty in experimenting on it often, "The Labs."
"The labs?" Midnight whispered, "Just what did they do to you guys?"
"A lot," Denki walked into the lab, "And so will I." He put gloves on and completely smashed vials to the ground. He went to the fridge, took everything out and smashed it.
Midnight watched as the floor mixed into different colors, swirling with each other. Some of the things mixed together bubbled, while others fizzed.
Denki grabbed the bunsen burner and walked back to Midnight. "I hope everything here burns."
Midnight knew exactly what he was going to do, "We should hurry up then."
Denki charged up the bunsen burner, his quirk sparking up. He threw the burner into the lab, and luckily, it kept burning. Denki grabbed a knife that he had and threw it straight into the smoke detector. The smoke detector fizzed out. "Now the sprinklers won't turn on."
"Let's go."
Denki never turned back.
~~~
The engine room was busy as always.
Midnight asked, "How do we deactivate the engines?"
Denki smirked, "We'll turn off the cooling system. That should overload both the engines and reactors."
"That's an explosion risk, Marigold!" Midnight said, "It's too dangerous."
Denki turned on the walkie-talkie, "Marigold reporting in."
"Iris present."
"Hyacinth present."
"I'm about to blow up the facility," Denki replied, "Is that allowed?"
"No," Hyacinth instantly snapped back, "Are you insane? There's an endless amount of people here, not to add that it'd attract attention."
"What do you want me to do?" Denki asked, "I was thinking of shutting off the cooling system, but that's a huge risk."
Iris replied this time, "Turn of the engines and reactor normally, and then let the fire in the labs catch up. It'll blow up later, when we're all out."
Denki hummed, "Got it." He hacked into the terminal with an ease that Midnight found terrifying, "They're off."
As if on cue, the facility darkened, all the lights turning off.
"Our mission here is done, let's go, Marigold."
"Yeah, let's."
~~~
Iris, Denki and Hyacinth stood in front of the gate to UA.
Denki smiled, "Wow! Look at all of us, keeping our promises."
Iris grinned, "Just took blowing up a super secret facility! Nothing much."
Hyacinth rolled his eyes and parroted, "'Nothing much.'"
"Do you guys remember?"
Two nods replied to Denki's question. "Pluck off the petal of the Marigold," Denki started.
"And stare at the Iris," She continued.
"Then, the Hyacinth will be with your spirit," He ended it.
"We're back together."
"And here to take UA by storm!" Iris chirped.
~~~
"What are we going to do with all the children?" Aizawa asked Nedzu.
Denki would be lying if he said he wasn't curious too. The Garden had hundreds of children, and not to mention that it was only the Fields that they had raided. The fact that the other buildings are still out there leaves a bad taste in Denki's mouth.
"We'll send those that we have the records of over to their families," Nedzu sipped his tea. Denki and Hyacinth had raided the Archive before they left, saving as many files as possible. "After a significant background check on them. And as for the others? It's about time UA sponsored an orphanage."
"We'll get them families too, just wait."
The first thing Denki did when he saw Izuku was hug him, tightly. "Izuku, lord, I'm so sorry. What did they do to you? Are you okay?"
Izuku smiled, "Denks, it's okay. I'm fine." Izuku looked around, "Where's Iris?"
"She's doing something, why?" Denki asked.
"I just wanted to thank her."
"Thank her?"
Izuku fidgeted, "She had snuck into the Garden and took my dna regularly so-"
"That means she replaced you in the beatings?" Denki asked. In hindsight, it made a lot of sense. "But what happened when you and Ashido had them together?"
"We never did," Izuku smiled, "My luck was just good, I guess."
"Yeah, 'good.'" Must be really sucky if it got you kidnapped, though. Izuku should work on his luck. Denki muttered, "It's good to have to back."
"It's good to be back!"
"Marigold! We're so sorry!" That's all Denki heard for the next 2 weeks. And honestly? Class A's constant apologies were getting annoying.
"Guys, I already forgave you. There's no need to keep endlessly apologizing," Denki grinned at them, "We're all good, yeah?"
It was obvious that the rest of the class didn't think that.
"You did it."
Denki looked down on Yaoyorozu, "Yeah, I did. I destroyed the Fields. And everything else? Well, they're next." Denki extended a hand to Yaoyorozu, "You believe me now? You want to help me?"
Yaoyorozu looked tired. Tired of everything, tired of protesting, tired of trying. But even then, she still took his hand. Why? Denki will never know. "Fine. This better be worth it."
"It will."
Hyacinth stared at the Overseer's ID card. It almost didn't feel real. All of that that happened? The Fields, the Garden's main headquarters completely being burnt to a crisp, it didn't feel real. It felt horribly fake.
Or maybe Hyacinth was just disillusioned.
Hyacinth liked the power he had over the Overseer in that particular moment though, although it's a constant reminder that he shouldn't had let them live.
But letting them live is something a hero would've done.
Hyacinth is not a hero.
~~~
Denki looked at Izuku. Denki couldn't stop Izuku. Any moment if he were to close his eyes for a split second, Izuku would disappear. But this time, Iris wouldn't be there to save him.
"Denks? You okay?" Izuku asked, "You zoned out for a second there."
Denki's mouth was dry as hell. He didn't remember the last time he spoke, or did anything really. Everything just sort of paused for him as he tried to catch up with reality. The reality that didn't feel real, the reality that wasn't realistic. Or maybe he just wasn't used to happy endings, after all,
Only heroes get happy endings.
Marigold is not a hero.
~~~
( "Iris, where have you been these past few months?" Marigold asked.
Toga was tired, she didn't want to reply. She knew the stuff she'd been doing would label her a villain immediately, especially since she had been approached by the League. "I've been surviving." And that was true. She was surviving off of the endless assassinations.
Her life wasn't as bright as Marigold's, her future not as bright as Hyacinth's, but she tries. And she thought that it was all that mattered. "No need to worry though, I'm fine.")
But was she?
She had thought long and hard about this decision, and she still doesn't know if it's right.
Iris hates staring up at the gates of UA, it's an endless reminder of her failure. Her failure to maintain on a bright path.
Unlike Marigold and Hyacinth. They fought tooth and nail.
But Iris? Iris hadn't been doing anything. Iris never got her morals straight, Iris didn't know what was good or bad anymore.
After all, it was all selective, wasn't it?
"Iris, or should we say Toga Himiko, are you ready to go?"
Iris didn't want to look back, "Yes."
Smoke wrapped around Iris, engraining itself into her memory.
If there's one thing she's sure about now, it's that;
Iris is not a hero.
"Pluck off the petal of the Marigold and stare at the Iris, then, the Hyacinth will be with your spirit."
~~~To be continued...
