The Garden

"Pluck off the petal of the Marigold and stare at the Iris, then, the Hyacinth will be with your spirit."

~~~
Denki's life has always felt similar to a fever dream. Denki hasn't been in control for his life for a long time. He's okay with it though, after all, why wouldn't he be? His current life has him content.
Content. But Denki— Denki wants happiness. Not contentness . Many people say that you don't know what happiness is until it either escapes you, or it happens. For Denki, it escaped him at a rather early age.
Denki wanted to find happiness again, that was his goal.
It wasn't long before Denki found his dream. He wanted to be a hero! Maybe that'd make him happy. However, he's trapped. He's trapped in a tunnel with no escape.
Luckily, he isn't the only one here, but he's still so lonely.
Denki's only allowed to leave on missions that he's assigned. He can't leave after that. The caretakers often say it's because the outside world is unsafe for him, but Denki thinks he's a special case. Denki's the only one not allowed to leave, and he wondered why.
Is it because he wants to be a hero? Here they say that heroes are bad, but Denki doesn't believe that. Heroes save people, they stop someone from dying. His caretakers say that Heroes are greedy and only do it for the money.
Denki doesn't see how that matters. Doesn't everyone want something?
His caretakers say that Heroes are bad for business, which leaves Denki thinking, why even start this business? What's so satisfying about being a hitmen or an assassin? Denki doesn't get it.
His life is inexplicably boring. There's the same routine over and over with no divergence; hundreds of kids like him aren't allowed to express anything. Denki's horribly bored. Not to mention that he can't go outside, he just guesses that he'll never see the light of day.
It goes like that pretty often around here.
~~~

Denki realized that they had a tracker on everyone after his first attempt. In hindsight, it was obvious, but Denki was just so tired. Yes, he is capable of staying up for more than 48 hours, however, that doesn't make it any less unpleasant for him.

Staying up makes him squirmy, his quirk buzzing similar to a jacksaw. So, not wanting to go back to training (which was next on his schedule after the mission) he delayed his trip 'home' as much as possible.

Clearly, this was a bad idea, but he only realized when the incessant blinking on his wristlet wouldn't stop. And that's when Denki realized that it wasn't just a recorder, but a tracker too. After that, he went pretty fast.

After all, he didn't want to receive the punishments.

I want happiness. It's that one statement that keeps Denki going in the hard times. Denki doesn't get his situation, or, he didn't get it before.

The archives tell another story, that Denki only recently uncovered. Of course, he couldn't stay long because of his tracker, and the recordings. He knew he was going to get in trouble for this but...

He was curious.

Curiosity killed the cat, but satisfaction brought it back. However, Denki hadn't ever felt that satisfaction. Coupled with the fact that his situation is less than ideal, this led to some exploring and some uncovering.

And Denki didn't find himself surprised with the results.

Although the consequences were as horrible as always, Denki finds himself thinking that it was worth it.

He also has a new goal.

Escape before he's 18.

[Entry 1: XX, XX, XXXX]

SUBJECT 46389 also known as Marigold (Denki) has shown significant improvement in his physical tests. However, the intelligence tests are lacking behind. His max heart rate has been raised along with max volts. This causes a loss of consciousness and a form of dissociative disorder if used for too long. Unlike our other candidates (Iris, Hyacinth) Marigold's temperament remains the same. If all goes well, Marigold will be one of the good harvests.

—Dr. Werbflyer.

Experiments. How did Denki not realize this before? No wonder his intelligence scores are lacking! Everyone thought they were going to graduate once they reach 18.

Denki doesn't feel like being harvested. And he's probably not, with how low his scores are, who would want his genes? He would tell everyone, but they'd think he's crazy, or that he's stupid, and probably not listen anyway.

So there's actually no point in telling them. Or most of them, anyway. Unlike what people think, Denki does have friends here. After all, how would he survive if he didn't?

He doesn't know their real names, since here, names have a lot of power. But he knows their code names, which are Iris and Hyacinth. Apparently, they both have anger issues, which is bad. Because what if they explode and tell this information to everyone? Denki would be so fucked. Basically, Denki's on edge about telling them.

But nonetheless, he trusted them, so he told them anyway. "Listen, I have news, but you're going to have to not get mad."

The purple-haired boy, whom Denki knew as Hyacinth stared at him in a complete deadpan, "Is it news that's going to make me mad?"

Denki doesn't know. Hyacinth might have a temper, but Hyacinth is intelligent. He's one of the most intelligent ones in the new generation, Denki was sure of it. "I have no clue. It's your emotions, how am I supposed to know?"

The second blonde in the group frowned, "So you're saying this has a high chance of pissing us the fuck off?"

Denki shrugged, "No clue, Iris."

Hyacinth sighed, "Just- what's the news?"

"Promise me you won't say a word about it to anyone else and you won't blow up."

Iris fidgeted, " Promise ? We're not fucking five year olds, Gold."

"It's Marigold. "

"Same shit."

"Look, Iris, you have to promise," Denki said, "It's really important information."

The girl rolled her eyes, "Fine, I promise not to scream at the top of my lungs at the news, there, happy?"

"Hyacinth?"

"I promise not to say a peep about this, Marigold," Hyacinth said, "But it better be fucking worth it."

"Graduation is a lie," Denki blurted, "Look, right, we all look up to graduation to finally leave this fucking place permanently, but it's not happening."

Iris' brows furrowed in confusion, "What do you mean?"

"In Graduation, you either get harvested, killed or recruited," Denki frowned, "Basically, all of that training to prepare us to be the world's saviors? It was all bullshit experiments."

Iris stayed silent, while Hyacinth spoke, "This- what you're saying- is complete bullshit," Hyacinth grabbed Denki's shoulders, his angry purple eyes stared Denki straight in the eye, "Don't fucking fool around with this, Marigold. Where did you find this information? I don't believe you."

Denki's breathing sped up at the sudden contact. Here, they don't touch each other at all , the sudden touch meant Hyacinth's temper was close, and that was something no one wanted to touch, not even the Overseer, "The archives," He rushed out the words, "It was in the archives. You can see it for yourself on the terminals."

Hyacinth's grip tightened, and Denki's words quickened, "Look, look, they're there. On the first terminal to the right, I swear. I'm not making this up, you need to trust me . Trust me, Hyacinth, Iris, please. "

Iris' lips thinned into a line, "How do we know you're trustworthy? We don't even know your name."

Denki gaped, they were pulling the name card. The name card is absolutely forbidden . Names are important, they spill your quirk and your identity, what you're supposed to be. Trusting someone with your name means swearing on your life, or a very important life long promise. His hands curled into fists, "I better not regret this. I'm Marigold, also known as Kaminari Denki."

The two openly gaped, for the first time, their surprise was showing. Hyacinth was the first one that recovered, "You really do believe in this, don't you?"

"Hyacinth, Iris, we need to get out. Even if it doesn't happen, aren't you pissed about being in this hellhole? Those things.... Training? Those are experiments. They're not just using us as tools, we're lab rats. "

Iris sucked in a deep breath, "Nice to meet you, Kaminari, I'm Toga Himiko. And we're getting the fuck out."

Hyacinth raised a hand through his hair, "Guess I'm being dragged into this too. Toga, Kaminari, nice to meet you, I'm Shinsou Hitoshi."

"We need a plan."

"I have just the one."

~~~
Hyacinth looked at Denki again, "When did you learn how to hack?"
"It's in the name , a quirk like mine certainly is useful for electronics, no?" Denki gave the terminal a zap.
"We need to hurry up."
"Yeah, I know, Iris is getting antsy," Denki slipped on his gloves, "You good?"
"Yeah," Hyacinth muttered, "I'm fine. Where's the printer?"
"Over there," Denki gestured with his head, "The cameras are out, we have 7 minutes."
"That's not a long time," Hyacinth put on his gloves and walked towards the printer.
"Believe me, it'll only take three to print then we can spring this joint," Denki typed away quickly, "Then, after that, if all goes well-"
"We have three days," Hyacinth's voice was shaky, "Then what will we do in the outside?"
"We're going to have to figure it out from there," Denki clicked print and the printer started working. He glanced at Hyacinth, "Trust me, okay? We'll survive, and hopefully, be in a better place."
"Right," Hyacinth sighed. He tapped to a beat that Denki didn't know of, "Do you think... we can go back to our families?"
"Our families?" Denki looked at Hyacinth, "You want to-?"
"I want to go back," Hyacinth said, "That's my first memory, you know? Being taken from them? I want to go back, Marigold, I want to see them again."
Denki turned off the terminal and went to get the papers. He looked at his watch, "We have to go, but," He put his hand on Hyacinth's shoulder, "I believe in you, okay? You'll see them again, even if it may take long. Don't worry, I'll be with you every step of the way." The moment was short lived, however, when Iris yelled something. "Shit. We gotta go."
The three assassins made it out unharmed.
~~~

Since then, Denki has been collecting information on Hyacinth's family, since Hyacinth wanted to go back. He wanted to make sure Hyacinth was safe, and knowing his real name - Shinsou Hitoshi- was a big help. Phase II of the plan was almost going to begin tomorrow until-

"Hyacinth, Marigold, and Iris, report to the Overseer please. I repeat, Hyacinth, Marigold, and Iris, report to the Overseer please, thank you."

The trio looked at each other.

"Fuck, they probably know," Iris swore, "But how? We disabled the cameras, the security system, everything. "

Hyacinth went rigid with realization, "They had the room bugged."

"You mean-"

"They expected us," Denki's voice shook in fear, "All that information I got- it must've been a trap-"

Iris growled, "And we played right into it."

"They knew we were planning this-" Denki continued, "Meaning, we're probably an example."

"The example of not to mess with The Garden," Hyacinth cursed, "We need to get out now. It's our only chance."

Iris gulped, "When we get to the real world-"

"If we stay together, we'll be easier to track down," Denki interrupted. A frown marred his features, "We have to split up."

"Split up?!"

"He's right," Hyacinth said, "Look, try to find your family, Iris. We can't stay together."

"Bullshit!" Iris' anger shot through the roof.

"Hyacinth, Marigold, and Iris, report to the Overseer's office please. I repeat, Hyacinth, Marigold, and Iris report to the Overseer's office please, thank you."

"Iris!" Denki said, "Calm down! We don't have much time. Listen, we'll meet again one day."

"Where?"

"Listen closely," Denki responded, "In the outside world, there's a highschool called UA. I don't care which course you get in, or how you get there, just-"

"Just be there ," Hyacinth finished, "Okay, okay, UA, it's a highschool. Got it."

"When?" Iris asked, her expression completely heartbroken.

"Two years, when we're fifteen," Denki replied, "I'll see you guys again."

"We need a code word, just in case," Hyacinth's paranoia appeared again.

"Pluck the petal off the Marigold, and stare at the Iris," Iris made up, "then, the Hyacinth will be with your spirit."

"Okay, I got it," Denki repeated it over and over mentally, "Now, we have to go ."

They had all packed the important things earlier today, since they were prepared for tomorrow, but the convenience was amazing. They made it out to the open, haven taken out guards, used explosives, and had a drawn out battle.

They were exhausted, but they had to separate, to leave.

~~~
"Pluck the petal off the Marigold," Denki clutched his things tightly.
"And stare at the Iris," Iris continued.
"And then the Hyacinth will be with your spirit," Hyacinth completed the phrase.
"Remember," Denki said, "When we're 15, we go to UA. We meet up there."
Iris' voice was airy and emotional, "Right."
Denki hugged both of them tightly, "I'll see you again."
Iris managed a small smile, "Yeah, yeah, we will."
"Hyacinth... I have information on your parents," Denki handed him a folder, "It has their address. I got it during my missions."
"Thank you," Hyacinth's voice was filled with guilt and sincerity.
Denki addressed Iris, "I couldn't get anything on your parents. I thought we had one more day-"
" Kaminari Denki ," Iris said, "It's okay. It's fine. I'll find them myself. You need to worry about your family." She turned her back, "This is goodbye for now, I'll see you at UA."
"I'll see you at UA..." Hyacinth parroted back, going his own way.
"I'll see you at UA." And with that, Denki was left alone, wishing that one day he would see them at UA.
"Pluck off the petal of the Marigold and stare at the Iris, then, the Hyacinth will be with your spirit."
