Mari: I love him. But all I really want to say, is that this is one evil world.
-Please Stand By-
Mari held onto Kidd as her thoughts passed through her head. "I love you." She whispered again and again.
He kissed her head. "We should get home, Mari." Mari nodded, her face in his chest. "Do you want me to carry you?" he asked.
"Okay." She said and they stood. He lifted her onto his back and she put her arms around his neck. She buried her face in his hair, quiet as the walked.
Kidd opened the front door as quietly as he could so he wouldn't wake Mari up. He walked her to her old room and opened the door. It was spotless because someone had been cleaning it since she had left.
He walked to the bed and set her down. She fell onto her side, her long hair spilling over her body. Kidd sat next to her and moved her hair to the side. He saw the two long scars through the back of her low shirt, and moved a blanket over her.
She moved, catching his hand before he could leave. She sat up, rubbing her eyes. "Kidd..." she asked.
Their fingers wove together as he looked into her black eyes in the dark. "Are you okay?" he asked and she nodded.
She pulled her boots off, letting go of him. "Never mind." She said laying back down. She pulled the blanket over her head and closed her eyes. "Goodnight." She said.
She felt arms wrap around her and she sighed with relief and turned into his chest. She held his shirt with her hands and kept her eyes squeezed shut. She could feel the hardness of his cast under her pillow, and she felt something horrible run through her... guilt. "I'm sorry. I'm never going to let anyone hurt you again." Mari said.
Kidd kissed her forehead and closed his eyes. "It's okay Mari. I'm okay."
Mari nodded, falling asleep again. She felt Kidd's arm tighten around her and she held onto him as she slept. Kidd watched her, his eyes beginning to feel heavy. He fell asleep, her in his arms.
In Mari's dream, she was in a big, open field, flowers everywhere. She bent down and lifted one of the small, lacy-white flowers. She held it in her hands and looked at it. She heard a loud crack of thunder above her. She dropped the flower and looked up at the sky, watching red clouds appear and another crack of thunder and a flash of lightning.
It started raining a dark liquid and Mari held out her hands, being soaked in the rain. She realized that is was blood and she started coughing as it filled her lungs. She fell to the ground, the white flowers painted red. Her hands dug into the dirt as pain tore though her body and she screamed. She saw the crimson blood begin to turn to black blood and it pooled around her. She looked down, realizing that blood was pouring from her body, from a giant gash in her stomach.
She coughed, blood spurting from her lips. She looked down into the dark blood around her and saw her reflection. Her black eyes were wide as she saw the needle teeth sprouting from her gums, and the long tongue lashing out of her mouth, the sharp bladed claws and finally, the two, long, black wings protruding from her black. She looked down at herself, the three keshin eyes staring up at her.
She screamed as she felt pain ripple over her again. She held her face in her hands, the claws biting into her skin. Then, she was out of the field. She looked up, in a dark place. She felt chains around her wrists and she looked down, seeing the two-foot long claws scraping the ground she sat on. The chains led off into the abyss, the end of them eaten by darkness.
"Mari?" she heard a voice say and she looked around, fear filling her chest. She looked behind her and saw a man walking towards her. "How are you? You seem to have forgotten me, but it hasn't been long, my dear." The man had pitch-black hair with white on it. Mari began to shake as she saw that they were white keshin eyes. Long flesh toned tendrils flowed from behind him and snaked towards Mari.
She tried to pull away as they came towards her, but it was like the chains were pulling her closer. The tendrils met her body and she was filled with a warm feeling. But it grew hot and she began to scream. The keshin eyes were burning red-hot and the tendrils around her body tightened. Her claws cut through them but there were so many that she was enveloped in them.
They were wrapped around her neck, beginning to cut off her air as the man walked to her and put a finger under her chin, lifting her face.
"What pretty, black eyes." He ran a hand over her hair. His finger touched her sharp teeth as his tendrils ran over her wings. "Now... do you not want to see your friends?"
Mari felt insanity rip through her and the man disappeared.
"Mari?" a girl asked and Mari turned, the chains gone. She saw Amme standing in front of her, in a short white dress, her beautiful silver hair flowing around her.
"Amme!" she said, feeling as if something was off.
Amme looked her in the eyes and Mari knew. She struggled through the madness to look at the girl. Her eyes were red, crimson, not at all like their other, beautiful blue color. "Amme...?" Mari asked, and the girl's eyes widened as Mari's hand raised, something controlling her. "Amme... Run!"
Amme turned, fear in her eye,s and she started running. Mari gasped and raised her other hand to stop herself. She grabbed her wrist, cutting into it. She clenched her teeth and then she looked back up at Amme.
"Amme..." she said, a smile playing across her lips. Mari was suddenly right behind Amme and her hand was raised. She screamed as her claw slashed down into Amme's back. The girl fell, blood spurting from her.
Mari fell to her knees and lifted the girl. Amme's eyes were dead and Mari tried to hold her close, but her claws dug into her skin. Amme's body began to dissipate and turn to a soul, but the soul faded and Mari was holding air. Tears were streaming down her cheeks and she looked up as she heard more footsteps. There was a boy with dark hair and he was carrying the body of a girl. It was Amme and the boy was crying, his tears falling down onto her corpse.
"Why?" he asked. Spiders crawled up his legs and the two of them disappeared in a swarm of black insects. Mari began to sob as she was in darkness again.
"Oh, Mari. Don't cry." Mari froze and she looked up at three women with wings. The Three Fallen Angels smiled at her.
Mari stood and started running away. The three women began to laugh and chase her. Their hands reached her and tore at her skin.
They suddenly stopped and shattered into sprays of darkness. Mari turned and saw Medusa. "I don't resent you, you know." She said, her words like snakes. "But," she said. "I do enjoy seeing you suffer." She snapped her fingers and suddenly Mari was in a faintly lit room. She tried to sit up, but she was strapped to a table, her wings pinned beneath her, and her claws scratching the table. She heard a door open, then close.
A figure walked to her and she saw Stein. "Hello, Mari. Looks like I get to dissect you again." He had a scalpel in his hand and he raised it, its metal glinting. He began to laugh as he drove it down into her stomach.
'Not again... Not again! NOT AGAIN!' her mind cried. She felt her blood drain out of her onto the ground and she screamed. Stein lifted another blade and raised it to slam it down into her head. It flashed and she was in the dark again.
She felt cold beneath her and she sat up, cold air moving across her skin. She heard coughing and she tried to listen to where it was coming from. She felt a cloth around her eyes and she moved one of her claws up to her face and tore it off.
She was met by an ally way, lit by moonlight. She stood, walking to the end of it and saw a form on the ground. She ran to them as she saw it was Kidd on the ground, blood falling from his lips.
"Mari..." he said, his beautiful golden eyes fluttering. "What did you do to me?"
She lifted him into her arms as gently as possible, trying not to cut him. Her tears fell onto his cheeks and mixed with his. She pulled him close to her and rocked him back and forth.
She looked down at his stomach and saw a long red gash, something that would never be able to heal, even for a reaper.
"M-maybe I can heal you with my w-witch magic somehow?" she said, her tears racing down her face. She passed a hand over his stomach and the wound closed. She smiled.
Kidd's body jerked and the wound turned black and ugly. He coughed again, a smile spreading over his face. "Mari... before I die... I want you to know..." he smiled, his eyes closing slowly. "Even though, you were the one who killed me..." he put a hand to her cheek, trying to wipe away her tears, but failing as his blood smeared on her instead. "I just want you to know... that I love you..." his hand dropped and his body went still.
Mari screamed with grief and held Kidd close to her. She just wanted out of this nightmare. She wanted to just be in Kidd's arms, safe and sound.
She jolted awake, a cold sweat all over her body. She was crying and she had cut into her hands with her fingernails, faint black scars left. She was gasping for air as she held her shoulders, bending her head down while shaking all over.
"...Mari! Mari!" Kidd was yelling, trying to get her to snap out of it.
She pushed away from him, moving back against a wall. Her breathing was ragged and her eyes were like a cornered animal's. "N-no! You're dead! Get away from me!" she screamed, putting her hands over her head so she couldn't see Kidd.
The door slammed open and the lights flicked on. Mari yelled something and pressed into her corner, her body shaking. Somebody ripped her hands away from her face and she gasped as the light hit her.
Kidd's worried eyes gazed into hers as he held her wrists. Liz and Patty stood behind him, looking a little scared. "Mari... it was just a dream... I promise..." Kidd said.
Mari looked at his hands holding her shaking arms and she nodded, trying to catch her breath. She closed her eyes, breathing as a cold feeling washed over her. "I-I'm... okay... i-it w-was just... a-a dream..." Her voice was ragged and it shook with each word.
"We should call Stein..." Liz said and Patty nodded.
Mari tried to stand. "N-no... I'm fine-"
Kidd cut her off by pulling her down. "No you're not, Mari." He said. He looked up at Patty. "Will you call Stein?" she nodded and ran off.
Liz pulled a blanket off the bed and handed it to Kidd. He took it and let go of Mari to wrap her in it, and images flashed through her head. She grabbed her face and squeezed her eyes shut as she remembered Amme's red eyes and the boy carrying her, crying. She saw Kidd's blood and...
"Mari?" a man's voice said and she looked up. She saw Stein standing above her and she felt something cold go through her blood. There was a cigarette in between the professor's lips and he clicked his screw. "Mari?" he asked again. "Mari, can you hear me?"
She nodded and felt Kidd's arms around her. "I-I-I'm okay... r-really."
Stein bent down next to her and reached his hand out to feel her pulse. His fingers were cold on her neck and she shivered. "Your pulse is almost twice as fast as it should be." He straightened. "I need to take you to the infirmary."
Mari shook her head. "I... I don't w-want to..." She tried to say as strong as she could, but her voice was shaking.
"I'm only going to let you go to school tomorrow if you come to the infirmary." Stein said and crossed his arms.
"But..." Mari began.
"Marie will be there. She'll use her wavelength on you." Stein said.
Kidd lifted her, keeping his hands on around, the cast hard against her. "I'll come."
"No." Stein said, taking Mari's wrist in his hand.
"But... when I let go of her, she started freaking out. I'll come to calm her down if I need to." Kidd said, staring into Stein unmoving gaze.
"You don't realize it, but when you touch her, your soul begins to harmonize with hers and it calms her down. I can do the same." Stein said and Kidd's eyes widened with Mari's. Stein closed his eyes and took in a breath. Kidd let go of Mari and Stein opened his eyes when she was okay. "See?"
Kidd nodded, reluctant to stay. "Okay."
They walked to the door and Patty waved as Liz and Kidd shared worried faces.
Mari waved, feeling cold rush over her. Stein looked down at her as they walked, the academy already in sight. "If you're cold just use your magic and get a coat." He said.
Mari looked up at him. "Isn't that against the law?"
"Then I'll give you mine." He took off his white lab coat and handed it to her.
She slipped her arms into it, thankful for it's warmth. "Thank you, Professor." She looked up at him. "You just wanted to see me use my magic again, didn't you."
Stein shrugged. "Maybe."
She crossed her arms. "Well. Since you gave me your coat, I won't tell anyone that you told me to break a law."
Stein laughed as they reached the DWMA's steps. "Fine. Fine."
Mari looked up at the school, all the lights on and the giant candles burning like they always did, bright. "Are there still people here?" she asked.
Stein nodded. "Mostly teachers. We guard the school and the students in the infirmary at night."
Mari nodded, her chest heaving from walking up the stairs. She stopped for a second, looking up at the twenty or so more steps, remembering the first day she had walked up them. "Sorry for bugging you so early in the morning." She said.
Stein waited as she caught her breath. "3:54 am to be exact."
Mari sighed. "I only got two hours of sleep... not even."
Stein shrugged as they started walking again. "You know how much coffee I drink to stay awake during school?"
Mari smiled as they got to the top, her back screaming with pain. She stretched, the scars pulling. She winced and Stein motioned to the doors. "Lets get you to the infirmary before you freeze."
Mari nodded, feeling her teeth chattering and her eyes drooping from lack of sleep. "Okay." She said. They stepped in, walking through the hallways, nodding to the occasional teacher who gave Mari an odd look.
They finally reached the white door that read "Infirmary", and Stein pushed the door open. Mari walked in, recognizing the white sheets blocking the beds, and the dim lights around the room. "Hello?" a faint whisper echoed. Marie walked around a corner and her eyes brightened as she saw the two. She ran to Mari, smushing her with a hug. "Mari!" She said in a loud whisper so as not to wake anyone. "Are you okay?" she pulled her to arms length and inspected her.
"Y-yes Ms. Marie." She said. "Though you almost opened my s-scars again." she said.
Marie's eyes widened and she kissed Mari's forehead. "I'm so sorry!" she looked around. "There's only two other students here so take your pick."
Mari gave Stein his coat and he said something soft to Marie and she looked up at him, worried. Mari ignored them and walked to the end of the room to where she used to always wake up when she was in the infirmary. She pulled back the curtain and, in the faint moonlight, she saw a girl with white hair staring out a window at Death City.
Mari halted as she turned and was met by red eyes and a broken expression. "M-mari?" the girl asked and Mari took a step back.
"A-amme..." Mari said, looking down so Amme wouldn't have to see her like this, like a monster. "I hope y-you're okay... I hope you're okay with y-your new partner..." She looked up at Amme, covered in bandages and scars. "I'm sorry." Mari said and let the curtain fall back to cover Amme's searing red eyes.
Mari felt tears prick. What happened? How could anything bad happen to such a sweet little girl like Amme?
Mari stumbled to an empty bed, a tear streaking down her cheek. She slipped off her shoes and fell over onto the white sheets, pulling the pillow into her chest like she was holding someone. "I'm sorry..." she whispered.
She heard Marie step into her area and close the little curtain. She sat next to Mari and laid a soft hand on her head, her healing wavelength washing over Mari's trembling body.
"I'm sorry." Mari said again, falling asleep in tears.
