"Now as you can see, the problem with this bulb is the filament. Does anyone know what happened to make the filament burn out?" As Mr. Jones' voice droned on, the girl checked the clock. 11:23. A whole 3 minutes had passed since she last checked.
She slumped in her seat with a small sigh. Why had she been placed in this class again? With her knowledge of history she should have been in the AP class. As it was, her incompetent guidance counselor threw her into a basic level class with an apology that the AP classes were too full.
With a small, unnoticeable movement she pulled her phone out from her backpack. With one hand she flicked it on, checked that the volume was off, and opened her email.
'Historical Memorial: 1997 Massacre Saddens Millions' read one title. She glossed over it moodily, not willing to read something that might make her time here even more unbearable.
'Wolf Sanctuary Opened for Business; Mountain Dwellers Relieved' another said. That one looked more promising! She clicked it, head unbidden leaning further down in her lap.
"Miss Brooks, please pay attention! No sleeping in class!" Mr. Jones voice snapped her from her doze. "Since you clearly know enough about our discussion today to not pay attention, tell me what is the correlation between platinum and carbon fiber for the light bulb?"
"They were both used as filaments by Thomas Edison to create the light bulb. Platinum however was more likely to be affected by heat and oxygen so it wasn't viable as a filament." She slid her phone into her sweater sleeve, hoping that he wouldn't comment on its presence.
"Alright, maybe you do know something. Tell you what? Go to the basket where I keep all the magazines. Pick an educational one and find an article to tell the class about at the end of the period." He directed her to a pile of magazines that was taller than her.
The first one on the stack had the face of a famous person and the words 'Criminal Mastermind?' She got the feeling that they were talking about a television series. A science oriented magazine had a cover dictating a coast of some important beach. One National Geographic magazine had a description of an ancient tomb recently discovered where the burial of pharaoh had occurred.
"Take two or three if you have to. This isn't browsing time." Mr Jones called out. She felt her cheeks warm up, and grabbed the next three magazines that were in the stack before returning to her seat.
Psychology Today was the first on this stack. She lifted it up and examined the first article. It was talking about something involving blind people and depression. Flipping through the rest of the magazine, she found an advertisement that had a huge goldfish in a circular tank asking a question. She couldn't figure out what the ad was even about.
She put that magazine to the side and opened another in front of her. As she started looking through that one, she felt herself drifting into another daydream, this one inspired from boredom. I wonder what's for dinner tonight... She thought.
"There are about ten minutes of class left! Jessica, you will be presenting in a few minutes. Be ready for a discussion of your article." Mr. Jones said. She quickly looked down at the article, now fully alert. One article about a hurricane destroying a child's clubhouse she immediately dismissed, but a different one about the state of Florida discussed the building of a breakwater to protect the wildlife in the oceans around there. That would be a good article, she reasoned. She finally began to read.
