I don't want to do this, it's always me, I always get stuck with the bad luck. From the moment I was born, bad luck was thrown my way like I was a mosquitos home. Let me explain...
Flashback
We were having a normal day, it was lunch and everyone was talking as loud as usual, the Ares kids arm wrestling, Aphrodite kids gossiping with poor Piper looking bored out of her mind, Hermes kids talking about what they stole through the morning and so forth. Nothing was out of the ordinary until a flash appeared in the centre. 'Great,' I though as I saw Ares when the bright light disappeared. 'This never goes well when Aries is around,'
"Who would like to volunteer?!" He shouted with a grin, although nobody was quite sure what he was asking, volunteer for what? One of the Athena kids read my mind and asked him.
"Volunteer for what, sir?" She asked, and Ares bellowed, as if it were obvious, which made the poor girl look down nervously.
"It's top secret, I'm not going to make you chose right now, there's paper pinned to the wall of the big house for those who want to risk it, but I promise it's going to be fun!" He heartedly laughed, a cruel grin crossing his face. His children cheered excitedly, of course they trust their father not to send them to their deaths. What could this be about. "In a weeks time I'll come back and call everyone who is on the list, and then announce what it's for. Once that list is off the wall, there's no backing out." He said, before flashing away again. That's when Annabeth, Leo and Piper came over to me, the others were currently in Rome.
"I'm willing to bet the Romans got the same message," Annabeth said nervously as she sat down beside me while Leo and Piper sat on the other side.
"Any of you thinking about it?" Piper asked nervously, I shook my head, but then I saw Annabeth nod her head, looking over at her siblings which are discussing it. "Why Annabeth?" Piper asked incredulously, like it was the last person she expected.
"I want to know what it is," of course she does, stupid stupid stupid! Curiosity will be the death of her. I didn't say anything, I would blow up in anger if I tried to speak. Annabeth knows this, I've been angry a lot, she doesn't quite understand why, but I think being angry is better than being sad and confused.
"It's Ares, Annabeth, it's a death wish." I said, biting my cheek and looking at her, and I saw her get frustrated, Leo and Piper also saw it, but they didn't know what to say.
"Percy's got a point," Leo claimed, although nervous of what Annabeth will say, once she wants something, it's hard to get her to back out of it, it's part of the reason I love her. She shot a small, almost unnoticeable glare at Leo before glaring at me with all her might. Piper and Leo quickly scurried away when the conch horn sounded for lunch to be over. Neither Annabeth or I moved, she was glaring at me and I stared at my hands.
"This is the one thing I'm not going to let you do, I don't care if you say I can't control you, I can't lose you." I said quietly, but she heard me.
"Then you do it! You find out what it is!" She challenged me.
"You won't if I do, right?" I asked, looking at her, my head still slightly low, I want to see her reaction, but she didn't seem impressed. Fights came easy to us now, now that life is peaceful, that's what Aries wants to change, he's bored. I resented him, I resented everything.
"Fine." She said angrily, "I'll let you do whatever you want because I know you're your own independent person." She snarled before leaving, I knew what she meant by that, she was being petty, but I didn't care right now. I need her to live, I can't live without her but she's proven she can live without me.
I went outside and to the big house, there was already a line, probably about half the camp, so maybe 150 kids ish, give or take. I'll just wait.
When the line was empty, I saw that it was two pages full of names, and it was the start of the third page. I skimmed through the names, making sure Annabeth didn't go behind my back, and she didn't. I quickly wrote my name and walked away.
End flashback
And that's where I am now, waiting on the stage with about 700 demigods, Roman and Greek, everyone was here, even though we didn't have space. It was sunset now, Ares stood in the front centre of the stage, everyone was silent.
"Last chance to back out!" Ares called, he hasn't announced what this is, so some people were hesitant. I looked over at Jason, who was a few people away from me, I looked at him, and I mouthed 'leave, this is a death wish, I'll follow you,' I knew it was a lie, he might have known too, but he listened and got off stage, along with maybe 50 kids, hard to say.
"Can we know now?" I asked with a tone of annoyance, I didn't care it was in front of so many people, I was terrified. Ares glared at me before clearing his throat and grabbing a remote, there was a screen behind us.
"This is where you guys will wake up in the morning," he started, I turned around, it was an 8 story mansion, with broken windows and falling siding. The shingles on the roof were destroyed from what seemed like weather damage. It looked creepy. "From there, it's you vs each other, last one surviving, wins." He grinned, and I felt my face drain of colour. There were protests, I didn't care though. We signed up for this, we knew Ares is the type for battle. I looked at Annabeth, who looked shocked and looked at me. I looked away.
"What are the rules?" Someone asked, and the crowd silenced.
"No weapons will be brought in, no special weapons either, nothing. You and the clothes on your back. There will be one hour a day when the alarm sounds where killing is forbidden, there will be food and water on every floor, once the alarm sounds twice you can kill. You are allowed to form alliances but only one can remain standing." Ares grinned evilly, I just won't kill anyone, I'd rather die.
"What's the point of this?" Annabeth asked, I now realized she walked up to the front, through the crowd. She looked at me worriedly, but I kept my expression blanked. She said she could live without me, that I'm making the stupid choice to protect her, that she's done, she can't deal with me anymore. She broke up with me. I don't need her pity.
"I'm bored," he said, as if it were simple. "Now, there are weapons in there, use what you can find, this screen behind you will be on, showcasing what's going on. Think of it like a show." He said, great, an audience. Fantastic. Maybe I'll die quick, someone will spare me the torture and just get it over and done with. I don't want to suffer anymore. "Now rest up and get as ready as possible, I will see you tomorrow morning." He smiled and flashed away, I got off stage.
"You were meant to quit with me!" Jason said, he was frustrated, I didn't care though.
"It's okay, I'll be just fine, when have you known me to give up easily?" I asked with a light smile. Hazel, Frank, Leo, Piper, Nico and Annabeth all came over.
"If you win, you have to kill someone!" Jason said, still angry. He doesn't want to lose me, but I don't feel anything, I feel empty. "Are you capable of doing that?" He asked, trying not to sound so angry, I shrugged.
"Who knows, I'm not used to dealing the final blow, and I probably won't, I'd rather die." I said honestly, we all started walking towards my cabin, no one knows Annabeth and I broke up and we don't want people to know yet.
"Just don't try to die, if you need to, defend yourself." Annabeth said, she was so worried about me now, she probably regrets what she said yesterday, but its not my problem, I can't live without her, so why would I bother trying to live? I'm sick of fighting, fighting people, fighting myself, fighting my past, everything. I just want to give up.
"Yeah, I will, don't worry." I smiled softly, walking into my cabin before anyone else could follow.
