Chapter 9
Days pass on the ship, and the training with Marcos is brutal. Over the period of a week, Notus and Meg have danced away for hours, the wind conjured by their Captain blowing them about and increasing in strength day by day. Meg does struggle with the dancing with the rougher wind the most, often losing her balance. She hates it, as she doesn't like to be seen as weak. Meg notices that Notus doesn't struggle as much, and it makes her kind of jealous. But she knows it's a matter of applying oneself to the practice, so she never gives up. After another few days, they both have the practice down. Marcos summons the strongest wind he can, without causing damage to the ship or to the two training with him. When they don't even falter once the strongest wind hits, he stops the wind, resulting in Notus and Meg stopping to stare at him.
"You both are doing very well. I think you're ready for the next step of your training." Marcos says calmly.
Meg and Notus grin at each other and return their focus to their newfound friend.
"So, the final step of your training will be actually summoning wind."
"Will we be doing something similar to yourself?" Notus asks excitedly.
"No Notus, you will be summoning a small, gentle breeze. The breeze is a simple skill that has its uses, but it's also the starting step to becoming an Aeromancer. Once you learn to summon the breeze, you'll eventually work your way up to a Gale, before being able to Summon winds to rival the strongest storms."
"Then we're ready to begin." Meg states cooly.
"Then begin we shall. Notus, step forward."
Notus walks forward to face Marcos and stands perfectly still, staring.
"Now, dance, without moving your feet. Do not move your feet once, and remember what I have taught you."
Notus nods and begins to dance. His feet never leave the ground, but his movements are flowing, gentle and graceful.
"Keep your movements simple and gentle. Don't lose yourself in the dance, stay very aware of the air around you. Feel the air, feel it as you move. Focus on the resistance and the flow."
Meg watches as Notus closes his eyes but keeps a focused look upon us face. His movements seem smoother, calmer, and there seems to be a visual bend around him.
"Now, feel the wind, and feel it gathering around you. You are the wind, and the wind is from you. You are not 2 elements, but one as a whole. Feel the wind gather in your palms."
Meg keeps her eyes on Notus, and watches in wonder as the air around Notus seems to ripple. His clothes move with him, but there seems to be a small flow of wind around him. His hair softly floats in the breeze as he dances.
"Now, let your hands be a guide for the wind. Gather the wind around your arms, feel that wind gather there, although you may not see it. As the wind gathers, let yourself feel the weight of the wind upon you. When you have the wind gathered where it feels light and has barely any weight, send it outwards. Feel the air move out, picturing a gentle breeze in your mind and send it at me."
Notus' eyes open and he moves his arm outward. The air around him ripples for a moment before releasing and flowing out. Meg can see the air move, and she is shocked as the wind flies from his arms towards Marcos. However it isn't as much of a soft breeze as a strong blast of wind. It hits Marcos, sending him backwards a bit where he lands on his back. Notus seems to focus his eyes, realizing what happened once he sees Marcos lying down and he turns red in embarrassment.
"Oh god, Marcos I'm sorry."
MArcos is shaking, and when Meg and Notus get close, he sits up and they can see he's laughing. They're a little confused at first.
"Umm, Marcos, are you alright?" Meg asks, lost.
"I'm great Meg. That was just amazing."
"What?" Notus says, bewildered.
"I know I said a gentle breeze, and you didn't really succeed there, but you conjured a pretty strong wind there.. That was a very difficult task. Even I couldn't summon a wind that strong my first time. How did you even manage that?"
Notus frowns and shakes his head.
"I honestly don't know. I was doing everything you told me to do, and then I just, let it go. I guess my breeze wasn't as soft as I pictured it to be."
"Notus, don't worry about all that. I think you have a natural talent for this. Wind is closely connected to emotion, much like Light and Fire. The stronger your emotions, the more powerful the spell. But that also comes at a price. The stronger the negative emotion, the more likely your power will fail you. So, keeping that in mind, just keep a watch on your emotions. You have potential, don't let that potential fall short."
Notus nods, surprise on his face, and Marcos stands, dusting himself off with gleeful laughter.
"Now, Meg, it's your turn."
Meg nods and follows the same directions Notus followed. She summons a strong breeze as well, but not as strong as Notus. It blows over Marcos, but doesn't make him budge, not even an inch. With that, Marcos sighs and smiles.
"Well, it seems your training has gone very well. You'll need to practice a little bit more, but you now can summon wind. I'll draw up a copy of wind spells and Aeromancy skills that you could use. We'll be reaching landfall by dusk, so I'll have it ready by then. You'll need it. Now, go eat lunch."
Marcos walks away and towards his cabin, leaving Meg and Notus alone on the deck. They face each other with a grin.
"That's another Mancery under our belt Notus. This is good for us." Meg says with a smile.
"Yeah. Now we just have to find other people to train us in other Mancery. But that also means we don't have many Mancery Paths to go. After all, you know Umbra, Necro, and Sana Magic. I know Pyro, Cryo, and Lux Magic. We both know Hydro Magic, and now we both know Aeromancery. What magics does that leave us to learn?"
"I believe that leaves us with Earth left to learn, and both of us need to learn each others natural Magics. Not to mention there are Skills we can learn that may help us in our conquest." Meg responds, thinking.
"Yes. There's a lot to do. But we'll be in Domus before long, so we won't have to worry too much. Anyways, I'm going to head down to the Mess Hall for lunch. Want to join me?"
"Right."
Notus walks off, leaving Meg to follow behind. But her mind is swirling. Notus most likely has no idea the plan that Mortem and her had discussed. She was glad to have learned Aeromancey, and was pleased that they had gotten so lucky as to have had their captain be an Aeromancer, but they couldn't let him ever be captured, possibly let him be a chance to betray their plans. Albeit, as far as they can tell, they have no clue of their plan to take over the kingdom, and it is unlikely he will ever know, but they couldn't take that chance. As Notus passes through the door to the mess Hall she finalizes her decision. As soon as they pull into port, Marcos will need to be disposed of. His ship will need to be destroyed of course, to erase any trace of themselves, but that is only a technicality. Mortem can take care of it tonight, once they leave the ship. Maybe some Greek Fire, perhaps. Her mouth turns upward in a smirk at the thought before clearing her mind. She heads down to the mess hall to Join Notus, her thoughts cleared and her mind finally made. They eat, watching through the window as the sun sets slowly upon the Horizon. Notus leaves after eating and goes off to ready himself. Meg talks with Mortem of the plan. Mortem simply listens, taking in the plan.
"So, we'll need to plant the Greek Fire just before we leave the ship, and we'll need to kill the Captain before we do?" he asks simply.
"Yes, and we must be quick and efficient. We mustn't leave any trace. You have all of our stuff packed and ready?"
"Yes M'Lady, it is all prepped. So, what of Notus? Was he made aware of our plan?"
Meg starts, looking away abashedly.
"Actually, I didn't discuss it with him. I'm fairly certain he would be a little off put, but he would agree eventually. I figure it's best to let him think it was an accident."
"With us, no offense, but that is hard to believe. Well, you know best. Shall we get started? The ship will dock in mere moments."
And with that, the movement of the ship ceases and They can hear the soft bustle of the docks from the outside.
"Let us go."
They ascend the stairs and Mortem walks off to get their things off the ship before they place the Fire. Meanwhile, she looks for Marcos. She can't see him anywhere, but the light in his Cabin seems to be on. She walks to the door and opens it, only to find a surprise waiting for her. Notus stands before Marcos, his hands on either side of his head, emitting light. Marcos stare is blank, his eyes glazed over.
"Notus, what are you doing?"
"I'm wiping his memory." he says without emotion.
Meg is so shaken by this that she doesn't move.
"Why?" she inquires.
"I figured you guys wouldn't let him live. He would be too much of a risk. So, I'm doing us all a favor. I'll wipe his memory and replace the memories with new ones. He doesn't deserve death, and it keeps our hands clean, for now."
"Will that work?" Meg asks, unsure.
"It will. I've done it before. All I have to do is take his memories of training us, his memories of the voyage, everything having to do with us. I'll then replace the memories with memories of an entirely different group of individuals. He'll think he was booked by a few vagabonds to travel to our destination, only to have them board another ship bound for Aeridale."
"Ahh, well then."
Meg stands there for a moment before the realization comes to her.
"Wait, since when have you been able to do this?" she inquires, shaken.
"Oh, it's a special skill of Luxmancery, a forgotten art so to say. Most who are able to do it use it to help people who suffer trauma of the mind, allowing them peace. My mother taught me."
"And you said you used it before? When was that?"
Notus says nothing, and since his back is turned, she can't see his expression. Something tells her that the reason why is something he won't discuss yet.
"It is unimportant. But I'm done so we can leave."
With that, Marcos crumples, his eyes closed and his breathing rapid. Notus turns to her, a smile on his face.
"He'll sleep for a while. We should get going. I'm certain our ride is waiting for us."
With that, Notus walks past her and she watches as he goes to help Mortem remove their luggage. Notus never fails to shock her, and yet, there is something concerning. She shakes it from her mind and leaves, closing the door behind her. She goes to help, letting her mind clear of the previous plan. Notus seems to have told Mortem what he had done, so the vials of Greek Fire lay in their case, untouched. They unload the ship, making record time. The ship they needed for transport to the Island rests directly across from Marcos' ship, so it isn't a far trip. As soon as they load the ship, they take off. With their newfound gifts, Notus and Meg guide the wind into the sails and they speed off, heading the way Mortem guides. As Night falls fully, they come to a hazy area about an hours trip off the shore of the mainland. Meg ceases and turns to the haze, her eyes closed. She utters a soft incantation and points out to the haze. A shot of light bursts forth and hits the haze dead on, releasing the imitation of the haze. A large island comes into view, a few miles ahead. The haze seemed to have been acting as a hiding mechanism. They pass through and the haze returns t0 it's normal state behind them. Notus looks around at the island, a grin on his face.
"Welcome to Domus, my home." Meg says softly.
