Chapter 1
The girls gaped at the cavernous chamber. "15 miles long, 10 miles wide. We're somewhere hidden in the Pacific Ocean. Took a couple years to find an island big enough and deep enough to build our main base but we found it. The mist hides the whole base." Avery said as the girls followed her down the plane as technicians rushed over to begin prepping the plane for it's next run.
"Alright. Girls follow me. I'll give you the tour." Avery said as a cart resembling a golf cart pulled up beside her. The girls got in and they drove off.
They soon exited the huge hanger, and drove onto a large platform. Multiple other vehicles came in and platform rose. "This platform takes us up to sea level. The hanger is roughly one mile under sea level and is reinforced and enchanted to be able withstand multiple bomb hits. We run multiple missions, some rescue missions, some extraction, some to put it lightly, remove people from the equation." Avery said. The platform rose to the top. The girls stared. They were on a huge island. Different cargo ships and warships lay in a huge harbor. "While running missions 24/7 we have our own factories underground, as well as research and test labs. For injuries we have our own hospital. However this was and still is a military base. Those who wish to start a family they will be reassigned to a section that runs operations in the city. If we need to deploy into the city these operatives will be able to help us as they are in high ranking areas like mayor, head of police department etc etc..." Avery narrated.
They drove through the base, heading for the biggest tower. "While here we do have partial immortality. However several of us have full immortality. The towers are where our control centers and information processing areas are. Each tower has a total of five artificial intelligences to control and help with the networks. As you can see, we combine our godly parent's power, with the technology, and the power humans were made to wield, aka mana, into a strong cohesive fighting group. No secrets are withheld from each other unless commanded by our head. However as newcomers you will find several of us unwilling to speak...freely. Or unfriendly, sadly. We have zero tolerance for disrespect, as well as gender discrimination. No gender is better. Each gender have their own specialty." Avery said as they drove past multiple circular walls. "Our air defense is like a Fortress, our sea defenses impenetrable. This island is surrounded by several smaller islands which serves as our first line of defense. This whole area is covered by Mist, then an energy shield and illusion projector."
They drove into the main tower, then alighted beside a set of doors. "Let's go." Avery said and boarded the lift. They arrived a level. "Alright hunters these is your level. A isolated infirmary for your healing. It has automated systems and its own AI. You can choose between female and male gender for the AI. Two female guards will be posted outside the doors. You have the whole infirmary to yourself. There's computers and a hot tub. Beds to rest on are also in there. Sorry for the guards but this is a secret military facility hidden from the gods. Only two knows where we are, what we are and what we do. It's just protocol. The female guards have full authorization short of killing you to keep all five of you in the ward. Sorry but again it's still protocol. I've been bending it already by showing you the city. Technically I'm supposed to bring all of you here. My apologizes." The hunters nodded mutely and went into the infirmary. "Alright Agnes. We need to talk. Agnes' head was spinning with all what Avery said. Gods? Godly powers? What was happening?
Avery brought her to another room. "My private quarters. Each room usually has two people, but since...a war started our boss told us to go into hiding. We tried our best but still there isn't anything for us to do. Let's get you out of nano-suit. You can keep it. But you need a different dress. I need a different dress as well. I hate wearing tank tops and glittery shit. I dislike having to act as a pompous stuck up rich brat. Avery slipped the tank top over her head, revealing rather a plain and disappointing black bra. Avery turned and quickly rummaged through a large closet before pulling out a purple shirt and putting it on. She glanced at Agnes who was just staring at her. "Hey Princess find something better to wear and stop staring at my ass." Avery said. Agnes blushed at the nickname and hurriedly adverted her eyes. She quickly searched through Avery's closet, then pulled out a black long sleeve knee length dress before hiding behind a closet door and changing. "Alright let's go!" Avery said, suddenly lifting Agnes up and piggybacking the girl, startling her and earning an eep. Avery carried Agnes down the hall, past where the hunters were staying, before taking the lift to the very top. They entered a sprawling office, with screens displaying different information. "Alright she will be here in five minutes. Any questions for the time being?" Avery looked at Agnes with her purple eyes.
"How are your eyes purple?" Agnes blurted out. Avery started laughing. "Wow first question and you ask how are my eyes purple. I like you." Avery exclaimed. Agnes turned crimson. "Well I was born this way. Any other questions?" Agnes nodded. "What did you mean by "gods", "godly parents", "power"?" Avery sighed. "Those my boss will explain." Avery cocks her head sideways. Agnes found that very endearing. "I sense you have some unease. Care to share?" Avery said with a smile.
Agnes gulped and swallowed. "Well you know when that 'hunter' died, I kind of saw a translucent version of her beside her body. Then she started drifting away. When you did that resurrection spell I saw her translucent self get sucked back in." Avery's eyes went wide at that information. She nodded. Just then a flash blinded Agnes momentarily.
"Lady Hecate." Avery said respectfully. The woman that stood in the middle of the room wore a white Greek chiton. Strapped to her hips was a pair of flaming torches. Agnes was intrigued to see that the torches were not burning the chiton, instead they just blazed away happily. Lady Hecate just waved her hand. "Stop it Avery. You are your mother's daughter. I am lower in rank than you. I should be the one bowing." Avery just smiled.
Hecate turned her attention to Agnes. "Sit down dear. What's your full name?" Agnes sat down. Avery took a notebook and pen from thin air.
"What's your name young one?" Hecate asked.
"Agnes Nightshade." Agnes replied, not giving her full name.
Hecate smiled warmly. "Now now dear, tell the truth. No secrets to be kept unless it's a life or death matter. And I know yours isn't."
Agnes swallowed. How did she know? "Agnes B Z Nightshade."
Hecate nodded. "Good. Parents?"
Agnes blinked, remembering the mother she only had a very hazy recollection of, and a father who never met her. Hecate smiled sadly. "I'm sorry. But we do have to know."
"My mother died at childbirth I was told, and my father I never met him. I only have a letter from my mother. But it was with my items on the island, but it was sunk." Agnes said sadly.
"Don't worry it's with me. I got all your stuff in here." Avery handed a letter and books to her. "The letter isn't read yet. But before you do that, we need to talk." Agnes hugged the stack of Greek mythology books to her chest.
"What do you know of Greek mythology?"
"You mean like titans, gods and Perseus and such?" Agnes asked. Hecate nodded, her smile growing. "And...oh...you are the actual Titaness of magic Lady Hecate right?" Agnes gulped. Hecate smiled. "Yes. I am the one in myths. My symbol, a pair of flaming torches." She gestures to the pair of torches on her waist. "You seem quite calm." Avery noted. "Well...my mother left me books on Greek mythology." Agnes said. "And I do read Percy Jackson." Avery started laughing. "Percy Jackson is real. Rick isn't real. Those books. You think a mortal writer is able to write such experiences in such detail? Especially the one in Tartarus? Percy and Annabeth are Rick. There's no other one who knows of their experiences until now. They still are unable to talk of Tartarus, but Athena convinced them to write down their whole journey down instead." Agnes just gaped.
Hecate nodded. "Why don't you look at your letter? Avery has told me about what you saw in the plane, we have a few ideas on who might be your godly father."
Agnes nodded and tore open the sealed letter, which she never read till today.
"Dear Agnes,"
"If you're reading this, it's means that I'm dead already and you've started to wonder about your parentage."
"I'll start off with your father, and his origins. Your father is a wonderful man. Granted, he was dark and gloomy, and I was happy and cheerful, but you can say opposites attract."
"Those books I gave you. Did you ever wonder why it was Greek mythology? Not roman, not Egyptian nor Norse? The reason is simple. Your father, is Hades, Lord of the Underworld, Riches and dead."
"I know it may seem absurd but I myself am linked to part of mythology. I am a descendant, or what they call legacy of Helios, the Titan of the sun. He has faded by now, but my lineage starts all the way back in Ancient Greece."
"So a descendent of light and the a dark person, seems impossible right? I wouldn't have believe him either if not for the fact that I had a link to mythology."
"We had a happy year. Then I had you. He was so shocked he actually fainted. I was so happy. But then monsters attacked just as I was about to give birth. You were delivered with the help of some undead nurses. Sounds creepy. I wrote this shortly before I died to poison running through me."
"Don't forget I will always love you. As you are a half-blood, a demigod, you need to make your walk to Long Island and find the Delphi Strawberry farm. Head to that farm. Once you pass a barrier and see a camp find someone named Chiron. He will know what to do. Your middle name B Z stands for two heroines from a second Titan War. When you're there, ask what happened to a daughter of Hades and two hunters on a quest to rescue the Goddess of the Hunt Artemis." At this, Agnes was suddenly hit by a pain in her head and she fell out of the chair clutching her head.
She saw a huge bronze man. She was carrying a bow. She was running towards the man. The man brought her foot down on her. There was darkness.
Avery knelt down beside Agnes, laying a calming hand on the shivering demigoddess. Slowly, Agnes stool pulling at her hair. Panting she looked around. "I saw a huge man. Out of bronze. I was carrying a bow. What does that mean?" She asked. Avery looked at Hecate. Hecate shrugged. "Don't look at me. I don't even know what's happening." Hecate said. Avery frowned and appeared to be in deep thought.
"Agnes. If you want we can do this another day." Hecate said. Agnes shook her head stubbornly. "No."
She picked up the fallen letter.
"I am proud of you my baby daughter. Just know that even I'm not with you, I'll always be waiting for you, and that I'll be in the underworld, waiting, when you find your parentage you can come find me if you wish. I must go. Hades has told me he sensed I would be dying in an hour. I am prepared. Death will be met on my own terms."
"I leave you a Stygian Iron sword which all children of Hades wield. It's buried deep under in our old house. Once a child of Hades can sense the location."
"Love,
Mom."
Agnes was crying at the end of this. Avery picked her up and hugged her. Agnes let loose a torrent of tears, wetting Avery's shirt. But she didn't mind. She just stood there letting Agnes cry into her shirt and muttered soothing words. Once Agnes had finish crying, Avery hugged her tightly. "I'm sorry. You must be tired." Agnes nodded her head, too upset to say anything. "Hecate. Where would Agnes be staying in?" Hecate replied, "With you of course." Avery picked up a emotionally unstable Agnes. Carrying her bridal style Avery brought Agnes to their room and placed her in the only bed. "Good night. Sleep tight." Avery kissed Agnes' forehead and she swiftly fell asleep.
Avery teleported back to Hecate's office. "I see that you have another theory. Let's hear it."
"When one goes for rebirth, they have to go through the Lethe to forget their past lives right?" Hecate nodded, still unsure.
"Memories can be forgotten, but they can be remembered as well. Is it not?" Avery said. Hecate realized where this was going. "You don't mean..."
"I'm 12% unsure, but yes. I'll have to look through her book of life, but we will need her permission. Tomorrow night is the winter solace. A group of monsters I've assigned someone to track will be attacking the hunters tomorrow. I will take one Pelican and bring back the five hunters we recovered. They will no doubt reveal what they know to Artemis, who will reveal to the Council. The council will summon you. That's where Agnes and I will come in." Avery said.
"But..."
"Hecate. Monsters have been more active again. This isn't the first time we've noticed that. I suspect another threat is rising. It's time we come out, become public. Use more flashy moves. Show that Olympians don't simply have two camps and a hunter group to support. Show that they have the Mana Magicians to support them." Avery said. Hecate blinked. Then grinned. "I like your style of being flashy. Let's do it your way!" Avery bowed and teleported away.
