Chapter Eighteen
HANNAH'S POV
Federal Correctional Institution, Phoenix, the stuff of nightmares unless you have family in here or are incarcerated. It's not a place anyone chooses to visit voluntarily but apparently I have those guts and so does the rest of my team. The only thing giving me courage is knowing that by the end of the day Santiago and I will have met. I can't wait to see him.
There are four of us, me, the group leader Dr. Matthew, Wyatt and Doris the third nurse. There are usually seven of us so I don't know what happened to the rest of the group.
"I know you're all wondering why there are only four of us today. FCI, is a high risk institution, the most dangerous of all the places we will visit since it literally houses criminals. To reduce the risk incase of anything we had to cut our numbers." Dr. Matthew explains answering my unvoiced question.
Wyatt and Doris look at me questioningly but I am just as in the dark as they are.
"The prison houses a little over six hundred inmates. We will be here for two days, maximum three if we work fast but hard. We'll have several Correction Officers on protection detail so as long as we stay by their side and follow instructions we will be okay. As a safety precaution we have to leave all our electronic gadgets in the car. Take off all your jewelry as well unless it's plastic or rubber."Dr Matthew instructs.
We do as he says and take off everything except for our hospital issued ID badges. I leave everything in my bag on my seat and leave my phone on DND to conserve power since I'm not going to have it on my person anyway.
I recall Dr. Matthew saying that we will be here for two days or three which means I might not even get to see Santiago today. That's such a bummer but I choose to tension optimistic.
"Anyone with any questions before we leave the van?" Dr. Matthew asks.
"Meals?" Doris asks.
"They will be provided by the prison, they assured me that its good and healthy enough for us." Dr. Matthew replies.
Doris does not look convinced but then it's not like we have any other choice.
"Any other questions? No? Okay then, let's get to work. Just another day on the job." Dr. Matthew says as if he's trying to convince himself.
"Only we'll be surrounded by killers and rapists." Doris mumbles under her breath.
"It'll be okay." I assure her even though I can't give her that guarantee myself.
I get out of the van after her and we all move to the trunk to get all the equipment we'll need plus the vaccines. It's several bags but we carry what we can and leave the rest to pick up later if we run out. Dr. Matthew closes the trunk after we are done and locks the car. We turn around in time to catch six men walking towards us.
"Good morning, you must be my vaccination team." The most powerful looking man of all six addresses us.
"What gave us away?" Dr. Matthew retorts.
"Funny man, hold on to that. My name is Corbin McKinley, I'm the warden here at FCI. I thank you all for volunteering to come help us curb this Hepatitis B pandemic. You are here to do your jobs and its my job and that of my team to keep you safe. You have nothing to worry about. We have taken all the necessary precautions to make sure that you are safe and that you get to do your jobs right. These five men will be your security detail, if you need to go to the bathroom or back here for equipment, one of them will accompany you. We will issue you security passes, make sure they are visible at all times. Do not lose them because if you do, you'll be stuck inside the prison as we will have nothing to identify you with. Do no engage with the prisoners outside the medical wing, you are here to work not for a tour. Do I make myself clear?" The scary McKinley guy demands.
He's scared us shitless and now he expects us to talk.
"You'll be okay ladies and gentlemen. I give you my word as long as you follow the rules. Now if you'll please come with me, I'll lead you to security for you to get searched and issued your ID's." He demands.
"Bathroom, what bathroom? I think I just peed myself. What did we just get ourselves into?" Doris cries quietly.
I link my free hand with hers giving her the comfort I myself desperately need.
"Aren't you scared Hannah?" Wyatt asks me.
"I am, I'm just good at hiding it." I reply.
"Me too." He smiles showing off his pearly whites.
The prison is as scary inside as it is outside, with security guards armed to the teeth everywhere. They look to be on high alert which is understandable but I wonder if they are always like this.
Going through the security clearance is easy since we aren't carrying anything that isn't needed for us to work with. The passes we are given are hooked to our tops to correspond with our hospital badges.
"This way to the medical wing." Warden McKinley instructs after we are done with security.
We haven't seen any inmates yet but I feel like they are lurking behind the shadows waiting to pounce. That scenario is ridiculous since there's broad daylight but it's still scary to know that one wrong move and we can die. We are dealing with serial killers and hardened criminals here.
To get past each door we all have to wave our badges to the cameras for them to open.
"The doors don't open unless there's a badge in sight. The whole system is automated to work like that thus why I'm insisting you keep your badges close." Warden McKinley asserts.
He doesn't have to tell me twice, I'm keeping a close eye on mine.
We get to the medical wing and I am so relieved that we haven't come across any inmates. I want to delay that as much as possible.
"This is our resident physician Dr. Lamont, he will aid you on where to set up and the way forward." Warden McKinley introduces one we get to the medical wing.
"It's nice to meet all of you. Thank you for coming." Dr. Lamont says shaking our hands.
"We're happy to be here." Dr. Matthew replies.
"No we aren't." Doris scoffs under her breath but she masks it with a cough.
"Two CO's will be posted outside and the other three will be in here with you. I'll take my leave but I will be monitoring you all carefully. Please excuse me, I'll see you at lunch." McKinley says and a moment later he is gone.
"So where do we set up? We need to begin as fast as possible." Dr. Matthew demands.
"Of course, right this way." Dr. Lamont replies.
He shows us to a medical room equipped with four examination tables and two desks.
"Dr. Lamont and I will set up on the desks here to coordinate the inmates who come in and you three are in-charge of administering the vaccine." Dr. Matthew instructs.
"Yes sir." We all reply simultaneously.
We all get an examination table and begin setting up. I make sure to go to the furthest end so that when Santiago comes in for his vaccination shot, we'll have a bit more privacy. As much as you can in a prison medical wing with seven other people inside anyway.
"Hi, can you please help me lower this table." I request one of the CO's.
"Of course ma'am." He replies.
"Please, it's Hannah."
"Of course, it's nice to meet you. I'm Finn." He introduces himself with a kind, welcoming smile.
"Hi Finn, how are you?"
"I'm good. You?"
"A bit scared. I've never been in a prison before." I answer honestly.
"You'll be okay Hannah, my job is to keep you safe and I will do that to the best of my ability. What you are doing is really brave and noble." He encourages straightening up after successfully managing to lower the table.
"Thank you Finn for the words and helping with the table." I appreciate him.
"You're welcome." He nods at me and steps back going to his assigned corner a couple of feet away from me.
"Is everyone done setting up? We want to call in the first group." Dr. Matthew asks.
"Yes sir." We all reply.
"Good, we'll be going by alphabetical order of last names." Dr. Lamont informs us.
Delgado. Looks like I'll be seeing Santiago sooner than I thought.
I take a deep breath, say my prayers and pray to the gods for protection today. I want to survive to see the end of the day. I put on my mask and gloves and wait for my first patient.
"Hello, my name is Hannah and I'll be administering your first Hepatitis B shot." I practice the line I've been saying over and over again to my patients since we started.
When the first three inmates are ushered in I brace myself for anything that might come my way. My first patient is an older gentleman, probably in his fifties with graying hair and wrinkles on his face.
"Hello, my name is Hannah and I'll be administering your first Hepatitis B shot." I recite the statement etched in my brain.
"I'm Hobbs. You're a very beautiful girl Hannah." He replies.
I look at him strangely since he can't even see my my full face.
"Thanks." I reply and get to work.
"You're welcome. So can I take you out sometime?" He asks.
Tom had warned me of this happening. Some of these men have been here for years and I'm probably the first real woman they're seeing in a long time. He advised me not to take offense and just play along as long as they don't say anything vile or try to touch me. That is easier said than done since Hobbs is my first patient and I'm already grossed out but I do my best. At least his hands and feet are bound together.
"A man who knows what he needs huh." I respond.
"Of course, so what do you say gorgeous? My cousin owns a very nice Italian restaurant. I could get us the best table in the house." Hobbs insists.
"How about we discuss this when I come back in a month to give you your second shot." I propose giving him his first injection.
"We can do that." He smiles showing me his yellowing teeth and it takes everything in me not to throw up.
"Good you are good to go and I will see you in a month. We're done." I say dismissing him.
I toss the needle and syringe I've used on him in the trash and prepare him for my next patient.
"You okay Hannah?" Finn asks me.
"Yeah I'm okay, thanks." I assure him even though I'm sure Hobbs will be jerking off to me later.
It's a disgusting image to think about so I shove it out of my mind quickly in time for my next patient.
Two hours later I have been asked out seven times, gotten four marriage proposals and lots of solicitation. One of the inmates tried to touch me but Finn stepped in and put him in his place. Other than that it hasn't been too bad. It's just like a night at the bar, getting hit on a lot only instead of drunk idiots these are criminals. We haven't even gotten to the D's yet which is what I'm really looking forward to.
"Hello, my name is Hannah and I'll be administering your first Hepatitis B shot." I recite for the umpteenth time today.
"Hi Hannah, I'm Julius." My new patient replies and I look up to see a kid, only a couple of years older than Diego smiling at me.
"Hi Julius, I'm assuming by that smile that you know who I am." I ask.
"Yes I do. Boss is always talking about you." He smiles at me.
Julius is the first inmate not to hit on me or make an inappropriate comment about my body so he is a welcome fresh breath of air. I decide to take my time with him unlike what I've done with the other inmates.
"By boss you mean Santiago right?" I inquire.
"Yes, I call him boss just like you call him Cesar." He explains.
"Oh wow. It's nice to meet you Julius, Cesar talks about you as well. How are you doing?" I ask.
"I'm okay, all healed now, mentally and physically." He replies.
"I'm happy to hear that." I nod at him.
"You really are beautiful. I can only see your eyes but they are beautiful and kind just like your photos." Julius compliments.
I smile because his comment isn't made out to be sexual, just honest. It's like receiving a compliment from Diego.
"Thank you. You are very handsome as well." I reply.
His face lights up making me smile.
"I will see you in a month." I say to him once I'm done.
"Thanks Hannah. Boss will be here soon, I know he's excited to see you." Julius whispers.
"I am as well." I confess.
Julius leaves and I'm feeling much better after our interaction. Talking to him makes me understand why Santiago is so protective of him and why he took him under his wing.
I know Santiago will be here soon because we've already started on the D's. I'm excited because even though I don't know what he looks like I feel like I'll know immediately.
I have to tend to a couple of more patients as I wait for Santiago but I feel it the minute he walks into the room.
I'm changing the gloves I'm wearing to a fresh pair when I feel a charge in the air. I look up to see a tall handsome man by the door in a white inform. There's no doubt in my mind that its Santiago but the teardrop tattoo under his left eye and the tattoos on his neck confirm that its him.
His eyes are locked on me as he walks with an air of confidence, that can be mistake for arrogance across the room and towards me. Doris is free as well but he disregards her and comes directly to me. By God is he even more gorgeous than I thought he would be.
He takes a seat on the examination table and it creaks under his weight.
"Mami." He greets and that one word sends me on a spiral.
It's him, he really is here, right infront of me within touching distance. We are sharing the same space, the same air. I feel like I'm about to pass out but I take a fee deep breaths to ground myself.
"Hello, my name is Hannah and I'll be administering your first Hepatitis B shot." I recite even though he already knows who I am.
He smiles and I'm surprised by how white his teeth are. He has pink cupid bow lips, a clean shaven face and a mop of dark curls on his head. He looks like a typical drug dealer only more good looking.
"I'm Santiago." He says humoring me and playing along.
What I want to do is to touch him so without waiting any further I take his hand in mine to tie the rubber band around his upper arm. I don't really need to since the injection is intramuscular but I'm just looking for an excuse to touch him.
The man is very well well built with veins popping all over his arms. I may have worked slow on Julius but I intend to work even slower on Santiago.
"We don't have very long so will you say something or gawk at me the whole time." He teases.
"Sorry, hi Cesar." I reply.
"Hi mami, it's nice to finally meet you in person." He replies.
"Are you?" I retort.
"Am I what?"
"Glad, like really?"
"Yes I am. I thought I wouldn't be but I am, I promise." He assures me.
"Good. I wouldn't want you to have any regrets." I reply.
"My only regret is that you're wearing that mask. You do have beautiful eyes though." He comments.
I smile underneath the mask and even though we aren't allowed to I make an exception and take it off just for him.
"There she is. You really are gorgeous mami and you were right." He compliments.
"About what?"
"You do look better in scrubs in person than you do in photos." He replied making me blush.
"You exceeded my expectations as well." I confess.
"You're not disappointed?" Santiago asks and for a fleeting moment I see doubt in his eyes.
"On the contrary, you are my wet dream incarnate." I grin making him chuckle.
"Thanks, I'm glad. Are you okay? Has anyone bothered you?" He asks getting serious for a moment.
"Not really no but I've been asked out like a dozen times and gotten a few marriage proposals." I answer him.
A foreign look mars his face that I can only assume is jealousy.
"To be expected, this prison is filled with horny dickheads. Nobody has tried anything else right?" He insists worriedly.
"Someone tried to touch me but Finn stepped in a dealt with it." I explain.
"He's one of the good CO's. I trust him." He assures me.
"I do too. So I met Julius he's a cute kid." I comment.
"When he isn't running his mouth sure." Santiago replies but it's obvious that he has a soft spot for the kid.
"Why are you wearing white?" I inquire seeing as he's dressed different from the other inmates.
"I work in the kitchen. All work has been shut down in the prison except for those of us who work in the kitchen or the cleaners. We all wear different uniforms depending on where we work." He explains.
"So you'll be making our lunch for today?" I ask.
"I'll help in making it yes." He nods at me with a smile.
"Good then I know that its safe to eat." I grin back.
"Fucking hell this sucks." He growls lowly closing his eyes as if he is in pain.
"I hate that I can't touch you. This is why I was so against us meeting like this." He explains further lifting his hands but they don't go far as they are attached by a chain to his cuffed feet.
I feel the pain in his words and it breaks my heart.
"Hey Cesar, calm down. It's okay, we'll get our chance." I console.
"I know but it still sucks." He laments.
I've been wearing gloves the whole time so I subtly take off one of them and link our hands together. His eyes widen but then he smiles and squeezes his hand against mine.
"Soft just like I knew they would be." He smiles rubbing his thumb over my knuckles.
"Yours are rough." I comment and on further inspection I see that his hand is glaring red with scabs and blisters in some places."What happened?" I ask letting go of his hand to get a closer look.
"Accident in the kitchen." He explains.
All I want to do is bring his hand to my lips and soothe his palm with kisses but I can do that. It will raise too many eyebrows. Santiago was right, it sucks seeing each other like this but it's better than nothing.
"Can I redress it for you?" I ask.
"Anything to get you to touch me and to spend more time together." He agrees smiling at me.
"We'll be coming back tomorrow." I inform him as I dress the burn on his palm.
"But I won't be able to see you." Santiago laments.
"Yeah unfortunately." I reply sadly.
Since I've already administered his vaccine there is no reason for him to come in tomorrow.
"At least I got to see you today and that's all that matters." He consoles being the nature one for once.
I smile and finish dressing up his wound.
"We've delayed this long enough. I think my supervisor is starting to get suspicious." I comment looking at Dr. Matthew who is giving me weird looks.
"I better go then. It really was wonderful seeing you gorgeous. I'll find a way for us to meet again tomorrow." He promises.
"Says the man who didn't want me to come in the first place." I retort with a smug smile.
I knew he couldn't resist my smile once he was me.
"What can I say, one hit and I'm hooked." He replies making me smile.
"Tomorrow it is then." I affirm with a head nod.
"Take care mami and don't you dare say yes to any of this pricks. You're all mine." He asserts.
Did I just get claimed? Yes I did and I love it.
"Yes Cesar." I assure him.
"Fuck, I love hearing you say my name. Till tomorrow." He groans lowly.
"See you tomorrow." I reply squeezing his hand one last time for food measure.
When Santiago leaves I am over the moon for the rest of the day. Seeing him is the best thing that has happened to me ever since I received his first letter even though I wish we had more time and were allowed to touch.
I can't wait to see him again tomorrow. The chances are low but if Santiago says he will find a way then I trust him.
