Chapter 4: First Birthday

“Hello Mum, have you got a minute?”

“Yes. I always have time for you Miss Davies. Come, sit.”

Maria walked into the office and sat in the chair in front of Big Mama’s desk. She was in her true yokai form, letting Leonardo play with her hair and fluff.

“I was running some tests on Leonardo’s blood and going through some x-rays to pinpoint his date of birth and his age range.”

“Wonderful. Have you been successful?”

“Sort of. I got in contact with one of my Kappa teachers in Japan for some consultation, and he confirmed that Leonardo was born in the early Spring. If I had to say a specific date…late April early May. As for his age, I had to compare his red and white blood cell count to the Kappa. It was a little difficult because there were remnants of human D.N.A mixed in, but I can say with certainty that he is at least a year old.”

“Does it matter what day we celebrate his birth?”

“No, that’s completely up to you. You could even celebrate in Winter time and there’d be no issue. A birthday is just a construct. You could be born on one day but celebrate it seven months later and there’d be no significant change in result.”

“Fantastic, if that is the case, Leonardo’s birthday celebration will be…May first. It's in a week and will give Big Mama plenty of time to prepare. Thank you Miss Davies. You may leave. Oh, and do give Amanda my regards.”

“Will do, Mum. Bye bye Leonardo.”

Maria left the office and Big mama pulled a clipboard with fresh paper from her desk.

“Godrick, take Leonardo to the daycare.”

“As you wish Mum. Come here, cub.”

Godrick was a big and burly lion yokai. His parents were huge fans of the “Harry Porter: Wizard Boy'' book series. He was three hundred years old with many years of security and bodyguard experience under his belt. His mane was neatly groomed, although there were plenty of gray hairs.

Big Mama’s heart melted when Leonardo waved to her as Godrick carried him out.

“Oh my sweet blue bunny. Mama will give you the best birthday ever.”

She immediately got to work and called Abigail to her office. The petite moth yokai was her head party planner first and foremost (and her seamstress second.) With the amount of important galas and special events Abigail had designed, Big Mama knew the Brooklyn Moth was more than ready for a children’s birthday party.

“I’m here! When’s the birthday?”

Big Mama smiled politely at the black and white, five foot yokai in her office.

“Leonardo’s birthday will be on the first.”

“Hmm, at his age you don’t really need to do anything big. I’m thinking cupcakes, little presents, close friends…We can hang streamers and whatnot, not nothing too flashy. Leo prefers the darker tones of purple and most shades of blue. I can design an outfit for everyone at the party and have them to the right people before the first. Are ya still with me Mum?”

“I am, continue dear.”

“Like I said close friends and family. So that's obviously you, the kids, and the kids' parents. No need to overwhelm Leo on his big day. That’s best saved for the future. Do you know what flavors he likes?”

“Leonardo has quite the peculiar penchant for pineapple, strawberries, watermelon, mango, just a flimflam mesh of tropical fruits.”

“Alright…how about instead of cupcakes we do mini upside-down pineapple tarts?”

“That sounds delightful.”

“Great, on to the color scheme, we can do light blue streamers, some cerulean party favors with wine accents, etc.”

“Everything sounds absol-tively wonderful! I trust you to make me and Leonardo some dazzling outfits?”

“You know it! I already have potential outfits for everyone! They’re gonna be perfect! I have to go get started. I’ll have a list of decorations sent up to be approved for order!”

Abigail was so excited she flew down the staircase. Big Mama chuckled and went about her normal job duties to her hotel and Battle Nexus as she would normally.

<~<~>~>

Big Mama had to admit, Abigail knew what she was doing. Her office was decorated beautifully with light blue and lilac streamers, dark purple and bright yellow balloons, a snack table with an adorable wine colored table cloth. The main snacks that were there were tiny pieces of cut up fruit and vegetables, with a few meat options for the foxes and wolf yokai attending the party.

Jack, Danny, Matthew, and Caleb all wore dark plum suits with the adults wearing a violet tie and the kids wearing violet bowties. Samantha and Abigail wore baby blue cocktail dresses with indigo accents, and she and Suzie were wearing similarly colored pantsuits. Suzie hated dresses and Big Mama refused to wear them on principle.

Leonardo was wearing a turquoise vest with a plum undershirt, soft black pants, and dark purple socks. That boy never kept shoes on for any occasion. He was having the time of his little life however. There wasn’t a second that went by where he was smiling and/or giggling. Suzie really treated him like a little brother and the two were by far the closest out of everyone there.

The kids played pin the tail on the donkey, hide and seek, they colored, made goofy faces, and ate lots of snacks until it was finally time for presents.

Abigail’s presents were the snazzy outfits and the food (she made everything herself instead of ordering it), Samantha and Matthew gave him a big book of nursery rhymes, Caleb had given him a bright pink stuffed frog, Jack and Danny made him a picture frame that included a photo of all of them together, and Suzie had given him a smiling pineapple stuffed toy. Big Mama had given him a new set of toys, but they were already put away in his little bedroom.

Everyone enjoyed the pineapple and mango tarts Abigail had made for the party.

“Yummy!”

“Leo said his first word!”

Big Mama didn’t have the heart to tell her ecstatic guests that his first word was in fact, Mama. The moment was too innocent and pure, even for her. Leonardo’s face was covered in the yellowish-orange sweet syrup from the tarts. He would need a bath, without question.

After everything was said and done, the parents carried their sleeping children back to their apartments. Big Mama held a similarly sleeping Leonado in her humanoid arms. She placed a little kiss on his forehead, softly laughing as he curled into her embrace.

"Happy second birthday, Leonardo."
