Chapter 17: New Kappa Friends

Leonardo was nervously fiddling with the tails of his bandana. He refused to take it off for any reason other than sleep. April was bringing her friends to the  hotel so he sat in the lobby in his human disguise as all the humans slept. The employees were all under invisibility charms and they carried out their night duties without complication. He dressed himself in his bandana, a pair of black pants, a plain indigo polo shirt, and his favorite fuzzy purple socks.

Big Mama and Abigail were in the security office, watching the cameras in case something went horribly wrong. Suzie was regrettably at the Battle Nexus. Godrick was in the shadows watching over him like always.

“Okay guys, don’t worry. I can guarantee you that he doesn’t care what y’all look like.”

Shoot, April was here. Leo took a deep breath, forgetting all of his Tio’s lessons on not showing your true emotions to strangers. His disguised face was full of worry. These were the first yokai around his age since Jack, Danny, and Shika. Sure he still had Suzie, but she was all he had. He would legitimately die if he made new friends and they abandoned him too.

Three shapes followed April into the hotel lobby. A larger Kappa wearing a ripped up muscle shirt and a spiky shell, a small Kappa wearing a paint covered orange hoodie, and another turtle wearing a purple hoodie that was distinctly familiar to Leo.

Leo ran forward, stopping short before he tackled April.

“Hey! Where’d you get that hoodie?”

“W-what?”

“Where’d, you, get, the, hoodie?”

“I made it from a blanket I had, why do you care?”

“That blanket was a Christmas present right?!”

“Yes? From my online friend.”

Leonardo was losing his mind.

“Bootyyyshaker9000?!”

“BluePineapple?!”

The large Kappa pulled Bootyyyshaker9000 away from Leo.

“April! You didn’t tell me your friends were Kappa! Let alone Bootyyyshaker9000!” (Credit to NightingGale123 for one of my favorite comments)

April laughed as Leo stared at his new Kappa friends with newfound fascination. He knew there were other Kappa in the world, but Godrick and Maria told him they stayed in Japan. The red Kappa slammed his closed fist into his other hand’s open palm.

“That’s right, you’re Donnie’s online friend. I gave you the bandana for Christmas! It’s cool to meet April’s human friend.”

“I’m not a human. Humans suck! No offense April.”

“Eh, non taken, I get it. Humans suck.”

Leo deactivated his cloaking broach leaving him in his true turtle glory. The brother’s faces were slacked with shock.

“Sooo, should I introduce myself first or you guys? I don’t know how to do this.”

“Guys, really?”

April facepalmed when they started stuttering and fumbling over their words.

“Me then. Okay, my full name and title is Leonardo Venus Nexus, Young Master of the Grand Nexus Hotel. My friends call me Leo or Leon or anything else, I don’t really care.”

“Well then, Nardo. I’m Hamato Donatello, or Bootyyyshaker9000. It’s so cool to finally meet you in person.”

“I know right?!”

“Hey Leo! I’m Hamato Raph! I’m Donnie’s older brother!”

“You’re huge! You must be the best at basketball or getting stuff off the top shelf! I’m too short.”

Donnie (not Bonnie like he thought) was taller than him, but not by a whole lot.

“I’m Hamato Michelangelo! You can call me Mikey, Mickey, Michael, Angelo, Angie, Angel, -”

“I think he gets it bro.”

Raphael’s giant hand was plopped on top of Mickey's head. The movement made Leo’s nose cringe.

“Dudes, you reak of grossness. When did you shower last?”

“Well we live in the sewers.”

“What?! That’s depressing! Come on, my mom makes clothes. You all can use the hotel’s bathroom to get cleaned and my mom can make you clothes.”

“But we don’t have the money to -”

“Big red, I’m the young master of the hotel. My mama owns the hotel. Just stay close to me. You won’t get in trouble. That’s a Leon Guarantee!”

Leo started leading his new friends to the elevator, but the elevator opened before they got close. Leo was quick to activate his broach. To his surprise, Suzie stepped off without her broach activated.

“Suzie!”

Leo deactivated his broach again and all but tackled his older sister. Suzie grin was massive as he lifted Leo off the ground and hugged him tightly. She had a few stitches on her left arm and a small nick taken out of her left ear.

“Didja win?”

Suzie nodded her head with a victory peace sign with her other hand. She gave April a heads up and stared at the poorly hidden Kappa in the room. Mikey had literally just retreated into his shell, Donnie was hiding behind a wall tapestry, and Raphie was hiding behind a sofa.

“Guys come out, this is my big sister Suzie. She doesn’t bite! Well…she doesn’t bite my friends at least. Donnie, this is NexusChampion18! Gasp! Suzie, Suzie, Suzie! Donnie is Bootyyyshaker9000! Can you believe it?!”

Suzie was surprised but offered an awkward wave, recoiling slightly at their smell when they got closer to her.

“Yeah, I was taking them up to the big bathroom on floor three. Can you ask mom if she can take their measurements to make them clothes? I think they're still in the security office.”

Suzie nodded and gave Leo one last squeezing hug before taking the stairs up.

“Vamanos amigos y hermana, the third floor awaits us!” (Kudos to Leo1218, I’ve slowly been learning Spanish thanks to their beautiful commentary and Google translate!)

Leo subtly held his breath the whole elevator ride up and thanked his lucky star that he was a turtle. (FunFact, red-eared sliders can hold their breath for thirty to thirty five minutes!)

“Mrs Daniels, can I have three towels and washcloths please?”

Veronica Daniels was a earth yokai and one of the maids in charge of cleaning. The brothers and April looked at him like he was crazy. He forget that the staff was invisible to everyone without a special bracelet.

“Of course, Young Master.”

Leo snickered when his friends jumped. He handed his friends their towels and saw their confusion turn to fear.

“Leo.”

“Hi GoGo! What’s up?”

Godrick handed him four bracelets before turning to the new Kappa.

“Hello April and new Kappa. I’m Godrick, Young Master Leonardo’s personal bodyguard. Rest assured no harm will befall you under my watch. Leo, Lady Abigail has been notified of your request and is working on the clothes now. Your mother is requesting your brothers receive a check up with Mrs. Davies and then going to see her.”

“Okay, thank you GoGo!”

Leo received a head shuffle andGodrick disappeared into the shadows once again.

“Don’t worry about GoGo! He’s really nice and super good at his job! He’s also really good at sports and sword fighting! He’s been teaching me how to use a sword and taught my older sister how to fight!”

Leo ranted about all his friends who worked at the hotel while his new Kappa friends stared at all the yokai walking past them with barely a second glance. This did not escape Leo’s attention.

“Did you guys never see any yokai before?”

“Nope! We’ve lived in the sewers since forever and never spoke to anyone!”

“Angelo is right. We’ve never interacted with humans before April and Nate.”

“April told me you guys have a dad. Didn’t he ever take you to the Hidden City”

“No, I didn’t even know the was a Hidden City. Where is it?”

“Jeez. I’ll ask Mama if she can take us all out later. There’s a really good pizza place run by my super cool Tio Hueso!”

And Leonardo was back on his ranting. Raph smiled fondly at him. Leo’s ranting reminded him of Donnie’s infodumping about his experiments and inventions or Mikey when he was making food or doing his art thing. It was like he had another little brother.

Leo eventually led them to the bathroom and showed them how to work the water. He sat outside the door playing charades with April and Suzie for half an hour. Leo passed their clothes to them through a crack in the door.

“Hurry up and get dressed! We get to see Maria!”

Another five minutes passed before they leave the steamy bathroom. Mickey was wearing a cute orange polo like him but with cool designs like the stickers on his shell and random splots of color like it was paint, a pair of brown shorts, and fluffy orange socks. Raphie wore a giant black shirt with red rings around the edges of the sleeves, collar, and bottom of the shirt, a pair of red shorts, and fuzzy gray socks.

Donnie was wearing theblack shorts but held the shirt and socks at arms length.

“What’s wrong Donnie?”

“I don’t like the fabric. Sorry if I sound ungrateful.”

“Don’t be sorry, I have the same problem. Here’s your hoodie. You can wear that and here's a different pair of socks. Are they better?”

Leo took the offending clothes and gave him a pair of soft, black, polyester socks. Donnie’s eyes sparkled and immediately slid them on.

“Thanks BP, I love them.”

“No problemo 9000! Now come on! Maria has all the best snacks!”

Leo grabbed Donnie’s hand and took off running down the hall. Raphie, Angie, and April followed closely after. Leo stopped running when he reach the closed door.

“Knock knock! Maria, are you here?”

“Come on in sweetheart.”

Leo pushed open the door and walked in. Suzie reappeared, watching the Kappa follow after her brother with narrow eyes.

“Hello Leonardo. Your mother told me that you’d be showing up. Hello boys, I’m Maria Davies, Head Doctor of the Grand Nexus. I’ll be giving you a check-up to make sure you're all healthy and then I’ll be handing out snacks. Leo, your first. You know the drill.”

“Fine.”

Leo hopped onto the table and sat through the annoying process of getting his blood pressure taken, his height, weight, and finally his monthly blood test. Leo HATED needles with a passion but he didn’t want to look weak in front of his new friends. He successfully made it through the needle part and received a little bag of chips.

His friends, Suzie, and April went through the same thing he did and he and his fellow Kappa got to have a party sized bag of gummy worms. April and Suzie got a fun spiral lollipop each and Leo started leading them to the office lounge.

“Mama, are you here yet?”

“Yes baby-shell.”

Leo had a huge smile and burst through the doors. Big Mama and Abigail sat on one of the couches and smiled at their son’s energy.

“Angie, Donnie, Raphie. These are my moms!”

“I’m -”

“Woah, your Ophelia Nexus and her rumored lover Abigail Martin.”

Raphael smacked Donnie upside his head with a “really?!” look.

“Well, aren’t you clever.”

Donnie’s eyes widened and he started fidgeting with his hands.

“Hello little turtley-boos, I am, as your purple brother stated, Ophelia Nexus to the human populace. To the yokai of the Hidden World, I am Big Mama. You may refer to me however you wish. You’ve already met my son Leonardo and my daughter Suzanne. This is my fiance, Abigail. This beautiful moth has made your clothing and -”

“Abigail Martin, rumored lover confirmed fiance of Ophelia Nexus. She is the owner of the famous Feather Wing Boutique. Ow, stop hitting me!”

Raphael, again, smacked Donnie’s head with Leo and Mikey snickering. Abigail nervously chuckled.

“Yes…So what are your names?”

“I’m Raphael and these are my younger brothers Donatello and Michelangelo.”

“Do you have a mother or father?”

“We have a dad back home.”

“What’s his name?”

“Splinter! Or, um…Hamato Yo-Yoshi.”

A spark of recognition sparked in Big Mama’s eyes.

“Mama, are you okay? You kinda froze up.”

‘Mum! I need you in the medical office!”

“Leonardo, go show your friends your room. I’ll go check what Mrs. Davies needs.”

“Okay.”

Leo led the brothers and April to the only bright blue door in the office lounge. Uneven purple paint spelled out “Leonardo’s Room” and said room owner swung the door. Dark mahogany dresser and closet, bright blue four poster bed with a dark midnight colored canopy, a pile of unicorn stuffed toys with a few bears, and a pink frog sat in a corner, a large wooden block with a ton of names burned into it (the most recent being Donnie’s username), a large computer desk with a laptop, several old phones, and a pc, a large bookshelf filled with comics, novels, movies, games, and knicknacks, and finally a pile of blankets and pillows making a small fort in the last corner.

“Welcome to my room! I found a game system in a guests room! Mama said I could have it since they trashed their room and the pool so I have it. I never got it to work though, I think they broke it.”

“Can I see it?”

“Sure.”

Donnie reached into the pocket of his hoodie and pulled out a small, foldable toolkit.

“Where were you hiding that?!”

There wasn’t anything in the hoodie pocket when Leo held the hoodie!

<~<~>~>

“Mum! Oh my god, I was running tests on the turtle’s blood and comparing it to Leonardo’s blood!”

“Maria calm down. Breathe.”

Suzie rubbed her doctor’s back as both her moms glanced at each other with a worried look.

“Those three Kappa are related to Leonardo!”

“What?!”

That single word echoed between the mothers.

“They’re all half brothers! They share a single parent, but it’s not a Kappa!”

“What do you mean?”

“They have regular turtle D.N.A like Kappa, but their common parent is human! I’ve never seen anything like this before!”

“I have a feeling…Maria I want you to compare the human D.N.A to some who used to be in the Battle Nexus.”

“That’s not an issue. What’s their name?”

“Lou Jitsu.”

Suzie’s head snapped up from her feet. Lou Jitsu?! That was the first and last human to ever become a Nexus champion, but he went missing.

“Alright. Give it a few minutes.”

Big Mama leaned on her winged fiance as the computer slowly compared strands of D.N.A.

“It’s a perfect match. Lou Jitsu is Leonardo’s biological parent.”

A solemn air filled the office as the realization washed over them. They had found Leonardo’s family. The only question remaining was what to do with the information.

“Thank you Maria.”

Big Mama left the office and started walking to Leonardo’s room. She found her baby playing video games with his friends…brothers and April.

“Leonardo, can you come with me for a moment?”

“Okay! Be right back guys!”

Leo ran to his mother and sat on one of the couches in the lounge.

“Baby-shell, I have some news for you.”

“Is it good or bad news?”

“That’s up for debate. How would you feel if I told you I found your biological family?”

“But you’re my mom.”

“I know. I found you in the Hidden City all alone with no one looking for you.”

“I know, you told me that before, but you’re not understanding. You are my mother. I’m not gonna leave you alone! You would fall apart without the only man in your life.”

Leo grinned and Big Mama was close to bursting with pride and affection.

“That being said, I’m super curious!”

“I bet you are baby-shell. Go get your friends. I have some news for them as well.”

Leo was starting to understand and was flapping his hands out of excitement. Soon each turtle sat on a bean bag in front of Big Mama. April was recording the whole thing with Abigail and Suzie at her side.

“Boys, Dr. Davies did some blood work on you all, as you remember, and have determined your relation.”

The three brothers looked confused and glanced at Leo who was visibly vibrating with excitement.

“You three are Leonardo’s biological brothers. Your father, Hamato Yoshi, is his father as well.”

A collective hush, then they exploded with shock and happiness. She let the boys carry on a bit more before calling for their attention.

“Donatello, little purple angel, would you call your papa and tell him to come to the hotel?”

“Of course!”

Donnie fumbled with his obviously homemade cell phone.

“Purple? What is it you need, my son?”

Lou Jitsu sounded just as Big Mama remembered. Leo was excited to hear what his dad sounded like.

“Dad! Guess what! Me, Raph, and Mikey are are the Grand Nexus hotel!”

“What?!”

“Hello again, Lou. Long time no speak.”

“What did you do to my sons?”

“Don’t fret Lou. I didn’t do anything. Just come around to the hotel. I have a deal lined up for you. One you can’t refuse.”

“Don’t touch my sons, you spidery bi-”

Big Mama hung up the phone and handed it back to a confused purple clad turtle.

“Thank you small one. Your father should be here soon. Is anybody hungry? I think some refreshments are in order.

Tea cakes, fruit tarts, and butterfly pea tea were brought to the lounge. Leo snacked on a pineapple tart while listening to Donnie info dump about a new “battle shell” he had in development. It sounded super cool to Leo.

A short, smelly rat yokai burst into the office. Suzie actually gagged the second he stepped foot into the lounge.

“Hello, beefcake.”

What.

All four turtles, Suzie, April, and Abigail choked on what they were eating or drinking.

“Boys!”

Leonardo watched as his new brothers ran to their father with happy grins. Leo ran to hide behind his mother.

“Fourth turtle…”

He sneaked a peek at the rat man. The rat was overcome with so many different emotions.

“Lou. Twelve years ago, I found my son alone in the Hidden City. I would like an explanation. But first, you are getting cleaned. You smell atrocious.”

Two yokai grabbed Splinter and whisked him away to a random washroom. When he came out, he smelled much better and wore proper clothing instead of an old Lou Jitsu costume.

“Alright. SO I was kidnapped from my cell at the Battle Nexus and used in an experiment. Dude called Baron Draxum used my human D.N.A and combined it with four ordinary baby turtles. I escaped, but with all the fire and the crumbling building I had assumed the fourth turtle was…”

“I see. Where have you been living, Lou?”

“The sewers. It’s not the most ideal, but I didn’t have much of a choice. I doubt you want to hurt my boys, so what is this deal?”

“I plan to offer you lodging, free of charge, for you and your family. In exchange, you teach Leonrdo about ninjutsu. I know you started teaching your sons, however ineffective. I also want you to bond with Leonardo. He’s painfully shy around strangers with good reason, and I think he’ll benefit from the attention.”

“What’s the catch? There’s always something with you.”

“Mom! Look!”

Leonardo ran up to Big Mama with a piece of paper. Mikey had drawn all four of them with great attention to detail.

“How sweet, it’s a very nice picture. Go get your brothers ready for an outing. We’re going to get ice cream.”

“Yes!”

Leonardo ran back to his brothers who all whooped with excitement.

“There’s no catch Lou. So long as my Leonardo is happy, then there is no last second deal change or betrayals.”

“How do I know I can trust you?”

“You don’t. I have, quite literally, nothing to gain from this deal. I’m making for my child’s benefit. Something I trust you can relate to, yes?”

“Hmph. Who are the other two?”

“Abigail is my fiance and Suzanne is our daughter.”

“I thought you weren’t interested in marriage?”

“That is in the past. Suzanne is particularly pleased to meet you.”

Said young lady’s tail was wagging and she was smiling at him. She tried signing to him, but he wasn’t understanding.

“Suzanne is in the Battle Nexus and looks up to your legacy.”

“How very you. Letting a child into the Battle Nexus.”

Suzie’s smile turned into a scowl and stomped away.

“Lou, she wanted to join the Battle Nexus since she was five years old. She’s making waves and plans to become the youngest champion since you. She also hates being called a child. Abigail, this is Hamato Yoshi, or Lou Jitsu, my ex.”

“It’s very nice to meet you.”

Abigail bowed her head a little bit before flying to the children.

“Splintz, I think you should take the deal. Not a lot of opportunities like this come along.”

“I will think about it - Red! Put Purple down!”

Raphael had Donatello lifted over his head like he was a plank. Leo was giggling and hanging off of Raph’s left arm and Mikey on his right. Splinter had to admit, the boys really meshed well. Even Purple was letting Leonardo hang off of him. The two were like twins.

Big Mama had indeed taken them all to the Hidden City for ice cream. His boys were very polite and had fun with their new brother. When they all got back to the hotel, the boys were in Leonardo’s room in a fort, passed out in a turtle pile. The wolf girl was curled around them with April.

“Lou. Have you made up your mind?”

“I’ll accept your deal. If only for my sons. I don’t have the heart to separate them.”

“That's music to my ears. I’ll draw up a contact right away.”

Splinter still did not trust his old flame, even the smallest bit, however, he glanced at the pile of his sleeping children. Working alongside Big Mama would allow him to give his boys a better life instead of his failed homeschooling and living in the sewers. He’d do anything for his sons. Even if it meant living with and playing nice with the Spider Queen of the Yokai World.
