#wipchat Nov 3 : Political and Militia systems
The italics are me, the alternating bold and plain text are the several different authors who joined us. Dashed intents are a thread. It was very interesting.
#wipchat A1-1/3 In the early part of ROTW, my political system went from Religious Oligarchy to Monarchy ruled by King Xerxes, he allowed the Temple of Oracles to be killed. After the Cataclysm War, the surviving Aetherians went back to an Oligarchy with a King and Elders Council
---------#wipchat A1-2/3 When they return to Aetheria before the final fourth war, it was an Aristocracy with King and Queen having equal say as Royals and Elders, but influenced by modern Terrearth political systems, they adopted a lower Council of Elected.
------------------#wipchat A1-3/3 The enemy kingdom of the Shadows called in the old times – Xelusia, in modern times, the Dark Dust Dimension, are a religious, blood-magic cult based Monarchy devoted to their deity and ruled by the Dark Queen and her consort, the Lord of Shadows.

1 I haven't thought about it much in Ellyville. I'd assume they have the same politics as we do. But having superheroes and villains influences things. My Crimson Rose (my new stories) series is our world, so everything is the same.
~~~~
A1: Not sure the technical term to be honest. You have a house and senate like the U.S., and an executive branch that, aside from the President and VP, has six members, 3 civilian, 3 military. These six never cross (I.E. civilian reps can't give orders to the military)
------A1B: Marcalla is theoretically led by a Prefect "chosen by Galla". In practice, the military holds much of the power, though the Prefect controls a lot of civilian life, and does have power. But they can also have problems if they go against the military too much.
~~~~
I have multiple WIPs going, but I'll stick with tonight. It's a retelling of a Welsh folktale, so it's a prototypical medieval story with a Duke and his household. So Monarchy, but we're unlikely to meet anyone higher ranking than the Duke.
~~~~
A1: my doesnt really have politics but my does have some slight references to a political campaign
~~~~
Answer #1 High School Is Hell is all about bullying, politics and social manipulation. It's an aristocracy masquerading as a democracy in small town USA.
~~~~
1 It's a corporate theocracy with a highly elaborate caste system, with a company logo as the god and a priestly class of executives
---------That sounds amazing. How long did it take you to develop it or did it evolve as you wrote your #wipworld?
--------------I pretty much lived in that world for twelve years, my former boss had a god complex
------------------Well, they say authenticity comes from doing your own research and you did. :)
~~~~
A1: Majority of WIP is set in the U.S. It's a democracy officially, though from 1948–52, there are strong overtones of totalitarianism. McCarthy and his merry band of witch-hunters have carte blanche to violate basic Constitutional freedoms.
------McCarthy-ism was terrible and terrifying. Do you write a lot about the Red Haters targeting innocent people?
---------One of the major storylines is Katrin, a Socialist newspaper intellectual (as she styles herself), being put on trial by the local HUAC for her decades of radical editorials, left-wing activism, and recent 8-month visit to Japan. Her family suffers by extension. Katrin's youngest child and only boy, Marek, is bullied out of school because he refuses to recite the PoA and National Anthem, and doesn't pay attention to the daily Bible reading or Our Father. He suffers the most from his mother's two trials
-----------------Tackling the history some want us to forget as fiction. I love it!
#wipchat A2-1/3 In the early years, Oracles, as representatives of their religious system, had authority to balance the Aristocracy but after the fall of the Temples of The Light, King Xerxes became the sole ruler by filling his council of advisors with shills of lower rank
-------#wipchat A2-2/3 blood magic which led to the almost overthrow of the Kingdom and the Cataclysm war...
In the New Aetherian Kingdom, the King and Queen are respectful of tradition but evolving into a government influenced by the people.
-----------------------#wipchat A2 – 3/3 The enemy are Extra-dimensional beings called the Queen and her Shadows indwell living hosts. They serve an ancient evil: the Hunger or Devourer. It seeks to escape its imprisonment in the D.D.D. and devour the life energy (light) and biomass of all that lives
~~~
A2a: Well, United Systems is purely elected officials. The only exception is the six I mentioned (AKA the Command Council) are chosen by the President. Though again, no civilian can be on the military side, and no active soldier can be on the civilian side.
--------A2b: Marcalla (which I'll go back and answer #1 for)... I'm not entirely sure. The story isn't clear beyond the military having a TON of power, yet hey still answer to a Prefect that earns the position via some competition that shows the favor of Galla, their god.
~~~~
A-2: Unless you really buy into the whole "divine rights of kings" thing, it's more the fact the Duke is the strongest warrior with the largest faction of knights in this part of the land. However, the real politics in this story deal with the household dynamics.
------You mean like Happy wife (duchess), happy life... LOL
------------No, more the struggle between the kitchen staff, the senashal and his son, and the head groom and some of the stable boys. The Duke and Duchess are only in this book tangentally. (MG fantasy)
----------------Why am I suddenly getting an Alistair from Dragon Age feel?
--------------------Never piss off the cook... or your bowels will regret it
------------------I can just imagine some mean dictator."Abuse who ever you like, unless they know Gwen.""Our cook? Why?""She's the one person even I dare not cross."
~~~~~
2 The superheroes and villains influence those in power. Plus there's secret groups who do the same. There's a few sentient AI's who also have their influence, or the scientists who created them do
~~~~
Answer #2 Controlled by people; the principal likes to think he has the bullying under control, the teachers think they are in control, but the popular and rich kids are the ones in control.
~~~~
There are some places where religious authorities are in charge.Some of the more powerful spirits of the wilderness are treated as sort of autonomous powers themselves
~~~~
#wipchat A3 : In the first war up to the Cataclysm, military service is mandatory for those who have warrior magics, rank is royalty rather than skill based. In the last war service is voluntary but since the war is all or nothing, so everyone fights or works in the war effort.
~~~~
A3a:United Systems: Total volunteer, though they allow things current militaries never would (I.E. spouses serving together). Though VERY hard to earn, it can be done, which helps encourage people to volunteer. Otherwise, fight well, get promoted.
-----A3b: Marcalla: bit of a mix. Mostly volunteer, but there is some pressing into service as well. I just am not sure how (hasn't come up yet). Largely merit based, but that itself is based on following orders, which can sometimes be quite brutal.
~~~~
A-3: The military is a combination of wealthy, trained soldiers and a smattering of peasant levies. Standing armies are expensive, so when in doubt, grab several hundred peasants, hand them spears and shields and just be sure they're home in time for the harvest.
~~~~
Answer #3 In Veronica's high school, there is an ROTC that is barely mentioned, but if it was military school, rank would be ruthlessness based.
~~~~
No draft, but people of noble blood or magical skill are expected to spend at least some time in the army in most societies. For others, serving as a pikeman or archer is a career choice.
~~~~
A3: The Korean War is in full swing, and there's both a draft and mandatory registration of all men over age 18. Students are granted draft deferments till graduation if they're in good academic standing & get above a certain score on a test.
#wipchat A4 – 1/2 there are many divisions in my #WIPworld. Royal rank is the main division in the first war. In the last war; Magic, technical skills, and military ability determine rank. Conflicts exist between the King's Progressives and the Traditional Lords (aristocracy).
-------------#wipchat A4 – 2/2 During their time on Terrearth, Aetherians intermarried with Humans. Prejudice exist against those who are less Aetherian, and against humans as being weaker (mortal). King Karstien and Queen Allura believe/teach "A being's worth is their heart, not their birth."
~~~~
4 I mentioned how the heroes and their allies work together, as do the villains. Normals also have their secret groups. Beyond this, I didn't ponder it. Knowing all these groups isn't important to the story
~~~~
A-4: There are definite groupings. The nobility is among the highest, then those that live within the castle proper, then those that live on the castle grounds, and then those beyond the walls. Even beyond those are the woodsmen who answer to no ruler (or so they claim)
~~~~
A4: Not that I know of for either group. Soldiers are set apart and lifted up... in both fleets really. But I'm drawing a blank on anything beyond that right now, yet I feel like there's something there I should be able to mention.Weird feeling.
~~~~
Answer #4 There are a bunch of social clicks and club and everything you would expect from high school. Veronica doesn't feel welcome in any of them except the computer chess club and the e-sports tournaments because she can play as her avatar and no one knows she's the Trash Man's daughter.
~~~~
Lots.One example—the Thalmings. They started out as pirates, then (when they took over the western seas and had no one left to steal from) had to go into trading, then banking.
~~~~~
A4: There's lots of strict class division. In the postwar era, bourgeois status is heavily promoted as THE way to be. Then as now, the proletariat & poor are largely ignored. Political conservatism is also heavily promoted as the only acceptable norm.
#wipchat A5 Most of my characters are in the higher ranks by birth, magic, or skill. They are not happy with the old systems and follow the monarchy's example. King Karstien and Queen Allura believe "A being's worth is their heart, not their birth." This includes human refugees from Terrearth
-----------A5 - 2 who fled the harvest of Terrearth by the Devourer to the Aetherian colony worlds. Two of the highest ranking scientists are human and one of Karstien's best generals after his father dies is a human he has known since she was a teenager, the last Mazoni descendant
~~~~
A5: Jason leads the highly respected Gold Squadron, and is well known for his leadership ability. He's well respected in the fleet. He's only a Major though. Not much else to offer on this one.
~~~~
Elly lives apart from most of the politics and groups. She's the guardian of Ellyville, so she does what she does without caring about who might stop her. Plus, she has the backing of a group of scientists who caused her powers to form. Rylee and Skylar, two villains, do what they want with the wealth they have. Captain Kansas, a policemen and the ex lover of both Elly and Skylar (not at the same time!), follows the rules of being on the force.
~~~~
Answer #5 It's high school in a small town, there are always people higher and lower than the MC but she feels like she is at the lowest because her dad is the janitor and Saturday trash man.
~~~~
A-5: In , the MC is a scullery maid. Currently, one of the oldest girls on the dish crew. She's hoping to move up to the cook staff instead of being on the wait staff when she turns 14. Her main antagonist is the senashal's son, who's currently a jr. butler
~~~~
My main character is the third son of the duke of a recently-conquered territory in nominal allegiance to the king of Tennek. (Just low enough to feel put-upon, but plenty high enough to be resented by others.)
~~~~
A5: Most of my characters are Socialists, Communists, & left-wing Democrats, which puts them at odds with the prevailing national politics (despite Pres. Truman being a Dem). They're also mostly working-class and lower-bourgeois, again at odds with the national climate
#wipchat A6 – 1/3 During the first war up to the Cataclysm, the MC Huntsman Yurieth of Adamos feels very oppressed being forced to follow the path his magic dictated by tradition and spend a thousand years fighting a war he hates and follow orders of those he deems unworthy to lead.
----------#wipchat A6 – 2/3 In the second and third war, Lord Damian wants to establish a dark dictatorship and his brother, Karstien, is forced to fight both wars to stop him and allow the humans he protects to remain mostly self-governing under his monarchy.
--------------------#wipchat A6 – 3/3 Later in the 4th war, Princess Allura faces the choice to marry the council's choice of Prince Damien or surrender the kingdom. She allies herself with Karstien to overcome Damien and his followers to build a progressive benevolent oligarchy before the last war.
~~~
A6a: United Systems: They don't mind the system, though they will sometimes question the orders given. In short: they'll get a headache now and then, but for the most part they're okay with how things work.
---------A6b: The current Marcallan Prefect wants to end "The jantan wars", but the military holds too much power, and they won't budge. At least, that was the case until recently...
~~~
A-6: Neither . . . since most of my characters are young (pre- to early teens), this is the only life they've known. It simply "is" the system. Even the kitchen is hierarchical - the Mistress runs everything within her area and even the Duke is loathe to challenge her.
~~~
Hmmm. I don't see either superheroes or powerful/wealthy villains doing either. They tend to ignore these things, and follow their designs/plans.
-------Do your villains feel restricted by your heroes or do your heros ever feel trapped in their roles?
------------Some villains do, having getting their butts kicked by Elly. As for Elly herself. Nah. The way she's written, she loves being a superhero. Her life before this wasn't as enjoyable.
~~~~
Answer #6 in her family politics, Veronica hates how strict her parents are but in the next book when she goes to college, she misses how ordered her life was. She doesn't miss how the popularity politics effect everything in high school.
~~~~
A6: One of the main themes of my WIP is the experience of being against the grain in a cookie-cutter, conformist postwar culture where the least bit of nonconformity is punished & looked on with suspicion. It's another side of this era.
