In the live NaNoWriMo Virtual Write-In Group on Youtube today, we talked about distraction ideas being like ants being like crawling all over the anthill of your story-mind.

So many things moving in so many directions that is is hard to focus on just one.

A lot of people are up against the Mid-NaNoWriMo HUMP. They are running on fumes in the idea tank, or a forest of writer's block has grown up between the place they are and the place they are heading or they are just having a SLUMP in creative juices. They are panicking because they don't have the word count or have fallen out of "love" with their story idea. They are hitting the SLUMP and can't get over the HUMP & They are dropping out left, right, and center. So many people in the chat today admitted they are this close to throwing in the towel. 

Don't DO it. The point is t write regularly for a month, whether it is 500 words or 5,000 words. Just keep Going.

More tips & tricks: 

If you are stuck, skip ahead to a later scene, you can always fill in later. 

Write a funny or sad or dramatic interaction between your MC and SC.  

Write a moment of self-reflection for your MC or a SC. (from today's Write-In)

Write a cross-over between your characters and characters from somewhere else.

Another thing that happens in the HUMP or SLUMP is the urge to do the "E-thing". This also came up in the Youtube forum - 2 EDIT or not 2 Edit that was the question...

One of the hardest things to do during the #NaNoWriMo is to NOT edit.  RESIT! 

And don't ever say, "oh this is crap" and hit the DELETE key or worse type nothing. 

Ignore that little nagging voice: "I mean we have sooooo many words now and  it only takes a few quick minutes...."

You have edited and re-written and spent 14 hours a day for a week trying to find the name of a sea shell only found on the southern coast of Tasmania.... 

Or gotten sucked down the the rabbit hole that is Google and found something totally unexpected... 0.0 (we have all been here)

So roll up that newspaper and smack your inner editor on the nose... Bad Editor BAD!

Tell your distractions ants that you have a newspaper and you will use it on them too.

Fifteen more days... We can do it! We can write it!
