Chapter 3: A Fate Worse Than Death

A crown is placed upon my head, I'm much older now. Terzo and some small children wearing different, steam-punk style masks stand aside, "All hail Mama Emeritus the Third!" Nihil announces, "Nema." The congregation of thousands responded. The glass ceiling shatters. Angels swoop down, you can't draw your weapon with your dress, you get stabbed in the chest. Hot blood fills your throat and lungs, Terzo runs towards you, along with the children, but it is too late, you are dead.

Y/n shot upright with a scream. Terzo quickly awakens and pulls her close, summoning a dagger in his hand thinking that someone snuck into the room, "What is it, mi cara what's wrong." he pulls her into his chest. She only sobs harder and starts hyperventilating, the feeling of that creature's claws digging into her chest still lingering. Terzo dismisses the dagger into thin air. It was now night, the moon shining through the windows illuminating her body. Her face stayed buried into the space between his neck and shoulder, he can feel the tears running down his back, "Y/n, are you okay? What did you see? You have to tell me everything you saw." Terzo tries to keep the panic out of his voice. Y/n's flashbacks and visions all represent real events, if something new has been seen he must know to tell Nihil, he could fix it.

Y/n looks into his eyes, "I saw my death. I-I could feel it." She placed a hand on her chest, she gasps, "What the fuck." She mumbles, Terzo takes his arms away, she takes off her shirt. There are scars, faint, but fresh over her arms and chest. Terzo analyzes each one, gently tracing them with his fingers. Y/n sat in shock, "The angels attacked you at the coronation didn't they?" He whispers. Each scar showed him a second of the vision, "How did you know?" she meekly asks, "I know everything, Y/n. Do you want to go on a walk?" She looks into his eyes with anger, He is really going to shake this off? She thinks, "I'm not shaking anything off, you know what we do on walks." A scowl paints her face, "You can mind read too?" He gulps, "Yes, mi cara, I will not if you want me to stop." He adds quickly, "Fine, can we go to the gardens?" Terzo nods and slips out of bed and puts on a hoodie. Y/n puts her shirt back on, "Here, it can get cold." He says barely above a whisper. She takes the purple hoodie from him and puts it on. He offers his arm to her and she gladly accepts.

The walk to the gardens was silent. Both didn't want to draw attention to themselves and or wake anyone. It was a long, but comforting walk. The candlelight illuminated only what was necessary. It was calming to be away from her fake life, this place was home. She knew it was always home, but being here with Terzo made her feel safe. Opening the garden doors felt like opening a new history. Memories of tending to the flowers, playing in the fountain, and having picnics flooded Y/n's brain. She leans into Terzo for support, "Good girl, y/n, you're getting better at controlling them." Y/n gasped then opened her eyes. She quickly tugged on Terzo's arm, a sign for him to follow her. She runs down the steps, past the fountain, and under the Weeping Willow Tree. The seats and table were still there. She drops his hand and runs around the trunk, hoping to find the pattern they carved into it as a sign of her memory being truthful. She runs her finger over the grucifix within a heart. Her initials and Terzo's etched around it in a circle, a binding rune, "You remembered?" Terzo asks, smiling, resting his hands around her waist. She leans back onto his chest, "Yes, I've never forgotten about this." She rolls up the sleeve of the hoodie and shows him her tattoo of the symbol, "I kept seeing it in my dreams over and over again. I thought it meant something important, so when I turned 18 I got it. I remember my mother hating it, but now I understand." She explains, her voice wavers towards the end. Terzo squeezes her gently, "I hoped you would remember this, do you remember why we carved it?" She shakes her head no solemnly, "Y/n, maybe you should sit down for this." He lets you go and leads you over to the seats.

They were black metal with spirals decorating the chairs. The harsh material wasn't uncomfortable, but inviting, and brought back a few more memories, "Y/n. You have a purpose in the church that we had to protect you for." He reaches his hands out for her to hold, she does with no hesitation, looking into his eyes for more explanation, "Your mother couldn't be with Primo because then you would be marrying your uncle." She starts to laugh, "Wait what? My uncle?" Terzo sighed, he hoped that that would be enough for her to put the pieces together, but he continued, "If your mother married Primo, I would have been your uncle." The smile fades from her face, "Y/n you are destined to be Mama Emeritus the Third. You will lead the church while I tour with the band, you will raise the next generation of ghouls, and you will carry our children. This is fated. I've seen everything you have, I've seen several outcomes and solutions too." Y/n's face pales, everything she sees is true, even her gruesome death, "Look, we needed you here to train you, to help you, to prepare you. Here, watch." He takes her hands and places them on the sides of his head. She closes her eyes and lets the memory take over,

The pair runs through the gardens, about eleven years old, "Y/n! Terzo!" Primo yells from the balcony, they both pause and run over to the eldest Emeritus brother, "Hi big brother!" Terzo says, holding your hand, "Papa needs you both." He says with a smile, happy to know that the Oracles will finally guarantee Y/n's fate. He secretly hopes that Elizabeth and himself would be finally together as a result. Both of the children run to Nihil's office. Terzo opens the door. There are three women, all look to be in their twenties. Each wore a black cloak, had white hair, white, glowing eyes, and no mouth. Terzo instinctively pulls Y/n closer to him, she hugs his side, the women scaring them both, "Come on in children!" Nihil beckons joyfully. You both take a few steps in, closing the door behind you, "These are the Oracles from Delphi, they're here to see you Y/n." Nihil explains walking over to her. Terzo lets go of Y/n, her arms fall back at her sides, "Come with me." Nihil says, holding out his hand to her. She hesitantly takes it and he leads her into the other room, the Chapel. An altar sits in front of them, the congregation watching on. Y/n swallows hard, fear painted on her small face. Her mother and Primo stand behind the altar and give her small smiles. Terzo stands closer behind her, he looks at his father with worry, Nihil gives no response, "Children of the Church of Emeritus, we are here to test whether this child, Y/n L/n will become Mama Emeritus." Primo motions for Terzo to join standing in front of him. The youngest brother obliges, Primo places both of his hands on his shoulders. Nihil turns to her and whispers, "Just lay on the altar, you'll see some things that may be scary, but don't be scared." She nods, still in a small state of shock. Nihil picks her up and places her on the altar, she lays down on it, hands resting on her stomach. She stared at the artwork on the ceiling, the bright colors, demons, and words painted onto the old marble took her breath away. Her thoughts were interrupted by chanting. The Oracles surround her, a searing pain fills her entire being, she lets out a yelp at the feeling, "Terz-ugh" but she quickly controls it. Once her eyes close, a wedding, a child, a war, and Terzo flash before her eyes. It felt as though she lived through her entire life on that cold stone. Terzo watches in horror, hearing her screams and whimpers make him try to run to her, Primo holds him back, "Y/N!" Terzo screams, her body jolts and shakes while the Oracles continue chanting. Terzo starts to cry, feeling her anguish. After a few minutes, she gasps and sits up, leaning back on her forearms to help her sit upright on the altar. Whispers fill the room, "Y/n L/n, You have passed the test. You will become Mama Emeritus the Third." The congregation cheers, Terzo escapes his brother's grasp and runs to her, quickly hugging her on the altar, she hugs back, tears now staining his white button-up shirt, "It's okay mi cara, you're mine, you're mine forever. We will be together forever now." They both let out a few laughs through their tears. Primo and Elizabeth share a somber look, now knowing for certain, they can never be together.

Y/n opens her eyes to see Terzo staring at her face, "See?" She nods slowly, "I-I'm going to be your wife." She whispers, a look of shock on her face, "Y/n if there is someone else, I understand, we just have to do it for the appearance of the Cle-" She takes her hands back, "I want to marry you, I love you it's true, but how do we avoid our deaths?" Terzo smiles and blushes slightly. This is the Y/n he knows. Strong in what she wants, honest in her feelings, and stubborn to make her life her own, "We will figure it out together with time, but for now, I would love to just catch up." She rolls her eyes at his relaxed demeanor. She has never understood his easy going attitude, "You are an impossible man." She laughs exasperatedly, "Yes, but I'm your man." Terzo flirts back. She blushes deeply, "I hate you." She says covering her face. Terzo laughs at your embarrassment, "Mi cara, there is nothing you need to be ashamed of." He leans over the table and takes her hands in his, "I know, it's just, I knew something was in these woods, I knew I belonged here." He smiles at how she never truly forgot him, "It's just so new and nostalgic at the same time." He looks into her eyes, "Let's just be kids tonight. Let's go back to when we were young. Do you want to play in the fountain? That was always your favorite." He asks, a devilish smirk playing on his lips, "Race you there." She fires back, already sprinting out from under the tree, "OH YOU SNAKE!" Terzo yells running after her.

They both spent the rest of the night splashing around in the fountain. Terzo would pick Y/n up and drop her into the water. She would sneak behind him and tickle his ribs, he'd collapse into the water laughing. They both were barefoot, Terzo was also shirtless. Y/n took off his hoodie, "I WIN!" Y/n screams, hands in the air, her chest rose and fell quickly, desperate for oxygen after their battle. Terzo sits up and runs his hand through his hair, "Satan, Y/n, you always beat me." He started to laugh, Y/n smiled. She really missed him, his mannerisms, laugh, and body language she studied for years, seeing him grown up made him more attractive. He notices her eyes grazing up and down his body, "Y/n." He interrupts her search, "Eyes up here." He smirks. She rolls her eyes and kicks water at him, "You are ridiculous." She leans over him. He grabs her waist and pulls her into the water with him, "TERZO!" She screams and laughs. They wrestle in the shallow water for a second longer before they stop. Y/n straddles his hips, hands intertwined with his. Terzo looked at her face in the moonlight. The way the light highlighted all of her natural beauty only made Terzo fall more and more. Slowly, both lean in towards each other. Y/n brushes her lips against his, but Terzo couldn't hold back. He lets go of her hands. One travels to her waist, the other to her hair. He crashes his lips onto her's with such passion, love, desire, and admiration. Y/n moans softly into the kiss, her hands wrapping around his shoulders, her fingers intertwined in his hair. Their make out session lasted for a few minutes before Y/n pulled back to breathe. They were both panting, foreheads connected, hands roaming each other's bodies, "Y/n," Terzo whispers exhausted, "I am so, so excited to be with you for eternity, you have no idea how much I've waited for this moment. Mi cara, I love you." Y/n smiles and giggles, Terzo's grin grows at the heavenly sound, "Terzo, I love you so, so much." She places a gentle kiss on his lips, "I think we should be going back to bed." Terzo says, Y/n groans, but stands and helps Terzo stand too. She puts his hoodies back over her, but shrieks at the feeling of water being thrown on her back, "TERZO THE GAME WAS OVER!" She laughs and screams, trying to get the excess water out of the hoodie. He laughs and grabs his shirt with one hand, her hand with the other, "I know mi cara, but I always win." They walk back into the ministry, happy, in love, and finally reunited.
