Chapter 2: Deja Vu
The walk through town and to the woods was mainly quiet. Y/n's brain still couldn't process the information Tobias gave her at a quick enough rate. He walks quickly, with purpose. She had to jog behind him, "Tobias...please...slow down" She pants, slightly out of breath. He instantly slows his pace, "Sorry y/n, just anxious." he admits, "It's okay." The silence resumes, "Can I ask some more questions?" Y/n asks, keeping her eyes fixed on the ground. Tobias looks over and sighs, he feels bad for springing this life changing information on you the way he did, but it had to be done. She is eighteen now, "Yes." He finally responds,
"Okay so am I related to Primo?" Tobias chuckles softly, "No. No you are not related to Primo. Your mother and him dated for years, she was going to marry him, but when the Heavens attacked she fled." She looks up at him, "The Heavens?" He stops walking on the edge of the woods, "Yes, angels, demons, witches, all of that is real. The heavens hate us and they will attack from time to time. Your mother's best friend was slaughtered right in front of her. That's why she left." Her brain whirrs for any sort of memory of her mother referencing the death of a friend, "She told me about a Mary who she was best friends growing up with." Tobias's face shifts to one of sadness, "Yep. She-she was special." Tobias's voice cracks, "Did you know her?" Y/n asks. He nods, tears now falling from his eyes, "Yes. She, we were together for a long, long time." Y/n hugs Tobias, "I'm sorry Tobias" He laughs at her sympathy and hugs her back, "It's okay, I've come to accept it, it took a lot of time, but I know she's happy and safe now." They stood like that for a while. Tobias took a deep breath and pulled back, "You ready?" Y/n nods.
Tobias faces the forest, Y/n stands slightly behind him, nervous for the mysteries hidden in the woods. He starts to chant something in Latin. Y/n understood that he was asking for the wood to bend and path to be seen. The trees did bend, a path was formed, lined with stones, the dirt dense due to centuries of use, and older silver lanterns rested on top of the rocks every few feet. Tobias looks over his shoulder, "You lead the way." Y/n furrows her brows, "What? Me! I don't know where we are going!" Tobias rolls his eyes, "It's a path y/n. It's literally clear cut, lit, and only leads to one place." She swallows the anxiety down and starts walking quickly. There were so many questions still flooding her thoughts that Tobias had to stop her from walking inside the church. She gasped slightly at the feeling of being pulled back, "Pay attention Y/n. You just almost walked in." He takes his hands off of her shoulders, "Sorry, sorry I just get lost in my thoughts." She steps back from the large wooden door and looks up. An audible gasp escaped her lips. It was the church from her childhood, "I knew it." she whispers, not even noticing that she said anything, "Familiar huh?" Tobias asks, looking at her shocked appearance. She nods slowly, "Well let's see if anything else sparks a memory." He offers his arm, she hesitantly takes it, her eyes still mesmerized on the architecture.
Tobias leads her into the church. Chanting, singing, and words of a preacher fill the halls, "It's Sunday service. Would you like to join?" Y/n was never one for religion. In fact the thought of being taught about a way of life and having the fear of eternal damnation made her very uncomfortable. However, she couldn't help but feel invited, accepted, and loved by the melodies being sung, "Please." She finally answered. He nods and leads her to the left hallway, golden doors mark the chapel's entrance. She gently touches the golden embellishments, another vision of her as a child opening this door flashes before her eyes. She stumbles forward, but Tobias helps her stand up, "It's okay, come out of it, you'll get better at controlling it." He comforts her. She straightens up, "Sorry, can we go in?"
He pushes open the door enough for them to slip in. The chapel was huge. The stained glass windows painted pictures of men in skull paint just like the ones she remembers from her dreams. Wooden pews with red velvet cushions were lined up perfectly to keep an aisle in the middle. Tobias leads you to the back pew, which was oddly empty for the amount of people attending service,
"Okay, so. That man sitting on the giant golden throne is" "Papa Nihil." She interrupts him, "Secundo is talking now, Terzo is sitting to the right of Primo, and I'm guessing Primo is the one sitting on the left." He looks at her, now wondering who she actually is himself, "Gold star." He jokes, "How did you know that?" Y/n's eyes automatically look at Terzo, he was about her age, "I remember him. I remember us playing together as kids." Terzo sits upright, noticing the girl staring at him. He looks back, his white eye starting to glow. Y/n gasps slightly, shocked at how his eye glowed. Whispers fill the congregation. The oldest son looks back at Y/n and Tobias. A look of sadness on his face, the memories of Elizabeth flooding back. Papa Nihil looks to where you were sitting, and he smiles. The church bells ring, snapping everyone out of their trances. The old one spoke, "My children, go enjoy the rest of this Unholy Sunday." The congregation stood in unison and chanted, "Hail Nema." Then left in an oddly orderly fashion. Tobias and Y/n stay seated in the back. Terzo's eye contact never let up, a small smile forms on his face.
You start to blush, "Do you want to talk to him?" Tobias asks, "Please." She says desperately, longing to finally explain his presence in her life. Tobias and Y/n stand and walk down the aisle. Tobias stops and kneels at the bottom of the steps, but Y/n keeps walking. Terzo stands now, still maintaining eye contact. She stops only inches in front of him, "Hello Y/n. It is great to see you again." He reaches for her hand, she doesn't resist. He places a gentle kiss on the back of it, his black and white makeup leaving a subtle stain, "Terzo." she mumbles, another vision of them running through the halls of the church, the gardens, and with masked kids plays. Terzo watches in shock and slight horror as her eyes roll to the back of her head. He quickly catches her before she falls, holding her against his chest like old times felt right and just. He felt her jolt, "Y/n, it's okay, I got you." His words cause her to melt. The melody of his voice is like a lullaby. She opens her eyes, "Terzo, I-It's you." She starts to smile, "It's actually you!" Her hands wrap around his neck, his around her waist. She starts to sob quietly, relieved to see her old friend, and possibly more, again, "Yes mi cara," She smiles at the old nickname, "It's me, and it's you! I thought I would never see you again." They both stay there for a while until Primo breaks the silence, "Y/n. Welcome to the Ministry." You pull back and look at him, "Primo." She slightly bowed. He leaves after the formality.
Another vision plays, this time more like a movie instead of just photos,
"Y/n!" Her mother screams. Fire rained down from the sky, winged creatures surrounded her. Her mother wields her sword and chops down most of the angels, however another man, who looks like a younger Primo, kills one behind you that was about to strike. Primo picks y/n up and holds her to his hip, "Elizabeth, come on!" He yells. She turns her head and looks at the pair, a look of longing and love fills her gaze, "Mama!" Y/n screams, trying to get her to follow them. Primo sheaths his weapon and holds his hand out for Elizabeth to take, she takes it and the pair starts running through the battlefield towards the woods. An angel swoops down and your mother stabs it, continuing their escape. Once they all clear the woods, Primo hands you to your mom, "Go. Go be safe, get out of here." Primo orders, "Primo, no, I-I can't leave you." Your mom starts to cry, "Elizabeth, you must. You have to save Y/n. You know her purpose." Your mother weeps harder, "I can't do it without you." Primo embraces both of you in a hug, "Patrick is a good man. He will take care of you, I know it." Your mother sobs harder, "I love you, Primo" He pulls back, "I love you, Elizabeth. They share a quick kiss. An angel lands in the clearing, "RUN ELIZABETH. GO!" Primo yells unsheathing his weapon. Your mother holds you against her chest, you watch over her shoulder as Primo battles with the winged creature. You exit the woods and your mother collapses to her knees, "It's okay baby, we're safe now, we're safe."
Tobias, Nihil, Secundo, and Terzo watch as Y/n twitches in her flashback. Her eyes were still rolled to the back of her head, sometimes a gasp or scream leaves her mouth. Terzo leans her against his chest. His arms wrap around her waist, his head leans on her left shoulder, "Will she be okay?" He asks, tears running down his makeup, "She will be fine, it's just an old memory resurfacing. Elizabeth must have covered them up really well for her to have this reaction." Tobias answered. Y/n shot up and gasped, "Y/n it's okay, it's okay I'm here." Terzo comforts, slowly helping her lean back against his chest. She was shaking, "My mother, my-my mother w-was" Her eyes were big, full of tears and fear. Terzo held her tighter to him, "Yes, yes she is." Tobias responded kneeling beside you, Nihil spoke up, "She left to protect you both. You have a purpose being her daughter that is necessary for the continuation of this church." Y/n looks up at the old man, "I have a purpose?" He nods, "My son will explain it with time." With that he and Secundo leave. Tobias stands, "Terzo take her to your room, explain more there." The young Emeritus nods.
Terzo helps her stand, "Come on mi cara, it's time to learn." He offers his hand, you interlace your finger with his. The comfort of the action brings back more memories, "You remember?" He asks coyly, she only nods. Walking through the halls causes more and more repressed memories to resurface. When one memory proved to be too overwhelming, Terzo would hold you until you came out of the trance. They both finally make it to his room, Y/n jumps onto the bed like old times. A smile finds its way to Terzo's face, "I missed you so much mi cara." He admits, moving to the dresser to remove his Papa robes, "I missed you too Terzo." You whisper, the comfort of his bed causing you to drift off, "Tired are we?" He jokes, removing the mitre and placing it on a shelf.
Y/n's head lulls to the left side of the pillow, giving her a nice view of Terzo's toned back, her cheeks flush. He only wore sweatpants under the robes, he always hated dressing nice under the robes, no one could see under them anyway, "Like what you see?" He says turning around, flexing his muscles. She laughs, "Very much so yes." He laughs at her honesty, always being true to her feelings and aspirations made her all that more attractive. Terzo moves over to his vanity, and starts removing the black and white paint. Y/n watches intently, hoping that seeing his face would spark more memories. He throws away the wipes and turns towards his bed. Y/n's eyes roll back, he quickly sits on the bed and pulls her into his chest. Terzo's heart races seeing her so vulnerable. The amount of pain he knew she would relive caused more stress than joy knowing that she was back.
After a few minutes, Y/n comes out of the trance, her chest rising and falling quickly, tears start to fall, "Y/n, My Satan, y/n what happened?" Terzo urges, panic filling his voice. He holds her closer. She wraps her arms around his neck, crying into his shoulder, "I-I saw it happen again." He sighs, knowing that would happen in his room, "Y/n don't worry, Sister doesn't hurt us anymore, and I'll never let her lay a hand on you again." Sister Imperator would beat the brothers, ghouls, and siblings who disobeyed. Terzo didn't meet you at the garden one night and you went to his room to find him bruised, bloodied, and wheezing. He had several broken ribs, a fractured skull, and broken hand. Sister found you sneaking into his room and she broke both of your hands and all your fingers as punishment. Terzo let you heal in his room, he took care of you the best a child could. Primo helped both of you the most, "I promise, I swear to you it'll never happen again." Terzo whispers, starting to rock her back and forth gently, desperately trying to help you calm down. Her sobs turned to whimpers. She pulled back, letting a yawn escape, "Try to sleep mi cara." Terzo urges, gently laying her beside him. She keeps her arms around his waist, not wanting to let him go. Terzo smiles at how adorable she is, and holds her against his chest.
He couldn't sleep. He remembers her mom sneaking them into the ministry until a few years ago. She would drop y/n off in Terzo's room so that they could play while she hangs out with Primo. The talks, the games, and the fun of those days was the little comfort Terzo had for years. Their fate to be married, and her ascendance to the throne was too much to explain right now, but he hopes that she'll embrace it and not run away again. However, with her in his arms, Terzo lets the anxiety slip away and focuses on Y/n. Her beauty, grace, and love were all overwhelming to his senses. He falls asleep, holding her even tighter against him. Finally they were reunited.
