Chapter Sixteen: The Hike.

Our ascention to heaven began.

When we first began to climb, we were filled with motivation, powered by adrenaline and pushed by our goal, however; after we reached our 100th stair, our energy levels dropped, rapidly. By Joshua's calculations, it would take us exactly four hours to reach the top, without stopping for breaks and we both knew that wasn't going to happen. Our hike started at 10am and we plan to be at the top by maximum 4pm.

We began to pant, the sudden drop in oxygen affected our breathing. A fire burned in my legs as we reached our 300th stair. I could feel every muscle fiber in my body begging and pleading me to stop, to take a break, but I pushed. I wasn't going to stop until everyone else does. Gluttony and Pride weren't that affected compared to Sloth, Joshua, Greed and I. Wrath, Lust and Envy weren't that exhausted but I could see the tiredness in their steps.

After our 400th step, my legs gave out. I plopped on the step, my legs still burning. I felt a tingling sensation in me, probably the lack of oxygen. The wind howled around me, pushing against me, trying its best to push me off the mountain. I looked down as the world curved around my feet. I gulped. I hated heights but now wasn't the time to panic. I mustered up all the courage and energy I had left in me and calmed myself down.  After a few minutes of rest, our journey from stair 400 began. Looking up, our destination looks so close yet so far. The Haiku Stairs have 3,922 stairs in total and is 2480 feet high.

With each agonising step, I re-evaluated the reason why I'm here. I really wanted to go home and lie in my bed, wishing that this was all just a dream. By the time we reached the 50th stair, my eyes began to water. My legs burned and throbbed. I winced in pain as I lifted my leg to go to the second step.

"Let's stop," Sloth called out.

We all collectively sighed and sat down on the stairs. I stretched my aching legs, causing me to wince me. A sharp pain travelled up my leg and colourful spots dancing in front of my eyes.

"After we reach half way, it will be easier," Wrath whispered.

"Sorry what?" I asked.

"It's going to be easier after we reach the half way point," he said louder for me to hear.

I wanted to question him further but our hike began again. This time, I had sufficient rest, so I was ready to climb the stairs. We moved faster this time, occasionally stopping for water, but within no time we had reach 800 steps, which meant that we had over a thousand stairs left. Great.

By the 1200th stair, we all collapsed again. I felt so lightheaded and my heart was slowing down. I could feel my lungs constricting due to the lack of oxygen and my heart slowly stopping. My whole body felt to heavy yet so light at the same time. I looked over at the rest and I could see the pain in their eyes, their chests struggling to rise and fall. After drinking water and having some food, we started climbing climbing once again. My legs we numb to the pain now so I couldn't feel anything.

1201...1202...1203...1204...

Each step seemed to mock my pain. Pushing myself to get to the half way point was one of the most hardest things in my life. I could feel myself getting closer and closer to the halfway point. I wondered how would reaching halfway make the climb easier, but I was too tired to think about it.

The pain I felt in my whole body wasn't like the pain of poking yourself with a needle, rather it was like boiling water gushing through me, leaving blisters all across me. It was like a scorching fire burning through my body.

After reaching the 1500th stair, the world began to spin underneath my feet. I began to hallucinate about things. I saw the Sins running up the stairs, Joshua following them beckoning me to join him, but one thing I saw motivated me to move forward.

The scene of the boys faded and I saw one person who motivates me all the time. The person who I would do anything to save and see again.

Mum...

She stood in the middle of the steps, smiling. She looked free of pain and misery. She extended her hand for me to take but I knew it was fake. It was always fake. I've learnt that throught all the dreams, hallucinations and letters. She smiled once again, turning around for her back to be facing me, however; arching from her back were two white coloured wings, flapping around, lifting her off the ground. She beckoned me to follow her and then she vanished. A new fire burned in me, pushing me to climb the stairs, adrenaline pumping through my veins.

My adrenaline died off around the 1700th stair but I still had some energy left to climb. The stinging pain welcomed me once again but I chose to ignore it. I climbed and climbed and climbed until I finally reached the 1900th stair.

According to calculations, when we reach stair number 1961, we will have reached the halfway point.

Only 61 more steps! You got this Maia!

Counting the steps in my mind, we finally made it to the half way point. I wanted to say something but the boys kept walking up the stairs. I looked at them with confusion as I followed. Suddenly a strong wind gushed and rippled against my clothes. I raised my hand to shield my face, but once I removed it, the Sins looked different.

They no longer wore their normal clothes, rather they wore black cloaks, covering their body. Each sin's cloak had special detailing. On Lust's cloak, dark blue spirals and embroidery were present. Wrath had red embroidery, Sloth had light blue, Envy had green, Greed had yellow, Pride has purple and Gluttony had orange. They all looked more intimidating. I gaped at them and so did Joshua. Within a slip second, their robes twisted and turned into a large pair of black wings. Gluttony grabbed onto Joshua and began to fly. Wrath held on to my legs and swung me up, causing me to wrap my arms around his neck. He slowly began to rise up.

He smirked, "I told you it will be easier."

Wrath began to pick up pace, as his wings battered against the wind, taking us higher and higher. Suddenly, the whole world drowned in a billion colours, my mind stretching beyond capabilities. A bright light illuminated my vision until everything I saw was white. I closed my eyes, to try and calm my vision, but when I opened my eyes, I wasn't in Hawaii anymore.
