Chapter One: The Meeting.
The seven deadly sins were all a bunch of nonsense to me. Lust? Greed? Wrath? Pride? Gluttony? Envy? Sloth? These are the tools of destruction? I was expecting more of things such as homicide, suicide or terrorism. Oh, I didn't introduce myself, my name is Maia. You are probably picturing a teenage girl with dreams of being something totally awesome, someone who wants to find a special someone in her life, you know, the same usual story. Well, let me stop you there, I am not the "usual story." Everything about my life is unusual, and you are probably wondering how? For you to understand this, we need to start from the beginning.
Like I said, I don't believe in the seven deadly sins, at all! I just don't understand the concept of seven "attitudes" ruining your chances of going to heaven. Yes, okay, they aren't good things but...there are worse things you could do. Right, so let's not get side tracked. You are probably thinking, "hmm...Maia how is your life unusual?" Let's just say- I met the seven deadly sins.
Now you are probably thinking "what kind of nonsense is she talking about?" and I don't blame you. They just showed up at my house! Yes, I woke up in the morning and found that they were in my living room.
***
I woke up to be greeted by the warm sunlight creasing my face. The warmth engulfed me and the sound of the birds chirping made my heart flutter. This would be an ordinary day. I got up and immediately stopped in my tracks...something is off. The whole world seemed to have a mysterious aura. Something evil filled the air and caused the hairs on my neck to stand. I felt a shift in the atmosphere. Something is definitely wrong. I, instinctively, go down stairs.
Standing my living room were seven figures. My heart began to pound, I wanted to scream and run away but their presence was mesmerizing. Their aura drew me in and caused me to shiver. Something was evil about their presence but it called me. I wanted to see them, no, I needed to see them. I guess I knocked into something because all seven heads turned to me. Each pair of eyes bore holes into me and I wanted to shrink and hide. I approached them, shaking in my clothes, to get a better view. Each person had their own distinct spirit that radiated off of them.
"Who are you?" I asked, mentally cursing myself for sounding so timid.
A man approached me and his eyes roamed my whole body. He stood at least four inches above me and his eyes filled with clouds. The clouds circled and engulfed each other. Each cloud forming in his eyes had the same shade of blue. The same consistency. He wore an elegant dress shirt with trousers neatly pressed. His body proportions were too perfect. He looked like the kind of guy that was loved by everyone, both guys and girls, for his devilishly good looks. Every single movement of his eyes was filled with desire. He wanted something. His eyes were piercing into me and his skin looked so soft. He grinned and his face contorted with want. Suddenly I mimicked the same desire I saw in his eyes. He spoke in a husky voice that made my knees go weak, "I am Lust."
"Y-you are lust?" I questioned.
"No, I am Lust. Capital L," he corrected, "my name is Lust."
All I could do is laugh. Someone named Lust! Nonsense...right? Lust growled and kept going, "I am one of the seven deadly sins. I am sure you heard of me."
I blinked, "the seven deadly sins are just a myth."
Someone barked with laughter while Lust's eyes remained on me. He smiled and on his cheeks, two dimples formed. They made him look so soft, which was a complete contrast to his piercing eyes. He approached me and whispered, "I am right here...do I look like a myth to you?"
"Cut it out Lust," spoke a man with a smaller frame. He definitely was smaller but certainly wasn't less intimidating. He stood an inch taller than me and my eyes immediately moved to his lips. They looked so plump, however; his eyes swarmed with wrath and anger. This jaw line was sharp and his cheekbones were high. If he didn't have that much anger in his eyes, he could have passed for a really cute boy. His eyes swarmed with red clouds that mimicked the movement of Lust's. Suddenly, a weird, unnecessary anger surged through me, causing me to want to rip my hair out. I felt so angry that my vision began to redden. Surprisingly, the anger drained out of me and when I looked at him, the clouds vanished.
I scoffed, "let me guess...you are Wrath?"
He smirked, "smart."
My eyes roamed to the boy lying down on my couch. He remained still as a log. His face milky white and his breathing steady. If it wasn't for the rise and fall of his chest, I would have thought he was dead.
"That's Sloth, by the way," informed Wrath.
I felt so exhausted and I wanted to sleep. My eyes began to feel heavy as I snapped myself out of it. Nothing worked. I genuinely felt like I would have collapsed on the floor if it wasn't for the man with broad shoulders, well-crafted face and perfect body proportions who shook Sloth awake. He groaned and sat up. The Greek-god like person acknowledged my presence and gave me a nod. Something about him gave off a proud sort of feeling. Sloth's eyes swarmed with clouds that I would have mistakened for Lust's, however; Sloth's eyes had a lighter shade of blue clouds in them which vanished, along with my exhaustion, when he noticed me.
"Pride?" I asked. I got a murmur of agreement from the rest. Pride's eyes glowed with purple for a split second. I thought my eyes began to play tricks on me but when he began to smirk I knew what I saw was correct.
I looked over at a baby faced boy. I would have confused him for Cupid if it wasn't for two things. One, his body and two, the look of hunger in him. Not the same type of hunger as Lust but a hunger for food.
"Gluttony? Really? You're not even fat! N-no offence," I stated.
"I hate being fat, makes my cheeks too big, but watching other people stuff their faces till they throw up makes my day," he lazily informed, like that statement was obvious to me. This man's eyes gave off an orange shine that made my stomach growl. I clenched it in pain as I tried to calm myself. The orange glow subsided and so did my starvation.
My eyes moved to a man sitting down next to Sloth. He was one of the shorter men but he still lived up to the intimidation of the rest. His face was long but well structured. His jawline was sharp and his mouth was permanently in the shape of a sneer. His eyes had a permanent look of jealously and envy. I remembered all the times my parents compared me to others. All the times they said that I wasn't as normal as the other girls. I remembered the envy and jealousy I felt. Emotions swam through me as I tried to keep myself leveled. The green glow in his eyes grew darker and darker until he gave in and let it die down. I took deep breathes in, desperately attempting to calm myself.
"Envy. Pleasure to meet you," he slurred.
The last man looked gorgeous but not as gorgeous as Lust. He made me greedy for him. I wanted him. I craved all the things I didn't have. I wanted it all. The need for things was so overwhelming that I couldn't stop. I wanted everything! I shut my eyes and controlled my racing thoughts. The yellow clouds circled and dominated for power. My greed grew stronger. My mind went to places I never knew it could go to.
He grinned, "Greed. Pleasure." The yellow in his eyes never left and neither did my greed.
"You just felt a fraction of our power," explained Lust, "we are no longer in Hell so our powers have decreased. We are still quite powerful for humans but not enough to cause mass havoc. I haven't the slightest idea why we are here but I'm sure we will find out soon. Till then, I am afraid we must remain. I hope that isn't a problem with you Maia."
How did he know my name?
"Y-you don't know why you're here?" I asked, eyeing the phone in the corner of the room. If only I could run and call the police.
"Don't even think about it," Wrath growled, "we can easily disappear and reappear within seconds."
"I-"
"What? Listen, we don't want to be here as much as you don't want us to be here so just let us stay here until we figure something," Wrath breathed.
"T-this isn't right. I-I just can't let seven guys here, especially the seven deadly sins. I mean the word deadly is in your name!" I exclaimed.
"Sloth, knock her out," Envy sighed.
"Woah Woah Woah Woah," I backed up, "okay okay I'll let you stay. Just don't touch anything and don't come upstairs."
"Great, you'll let us stay and if you don't, Sloth here will knock you out for quite sometime," Lust grinned.
He leaned against the wall and glanced at me. He closed his eyes and rested his head on my wall. His face looked so peaceful that it made it hard for me to believe that this man could be something so harmful and evil like Lust. His eyes remained closed as he spoke,
"Just to inform you Maia. The myths you talk about...they all are real."
