Chapter 4

I arrived at my first meeting with Umbridge ten minutes early. I was not ready to mess up what I spent so long working for.

After a few minutes Potter walked up and gave me a look of disgust as he stood on the other side of the door. "You got detention too Malfoy?" He sneered.

I rolled my eyes. "Absolutely not! I'm Umbridges new apprentice and tonight's our first meeting. An apprenticeship is something that someone does when they have their life together, have goals, are ambitious, intelligent, and are all around a better person then you."

"I know what an apprenticeship is Malfoy!" He scoffed at me.

The professor finally opened her door and let us in. Potter was instructed to sit down on the desk at the front of the room and Umbridge beckoned me to follow her up to her office. I shut the door behind me and watched her reach into the drawers. "Miss Malfoy today I want you to run detention with Mr Potter," she handed me two quills. The bottom of both the quills, the tip was red and looked like it had been dyed that color. I remembered seeing the quills in a book of dark magic before but I wasn't able to remember what they did. "Make sure that Mr Potter uses these while he writes his lines, 200 of them, saying 'I must not tell lies'." Blood quills, that's what they are. They take blood from the hand and use that as the ink. I felt a breath catch in my throat as I nodded.

"Shall I take his wand and any quills he has on him?" I asked her, trying to hide any disdain I have to the idea of using the quills, eager to make a good first impression to her.

"Wonderful, I will return in a few hours, I trust that you will be completely in control," she said as she walked out of her office. I followed her out of her office and watched as she left the room.

I picked up a piece of parchment and placed it and one of the quills on his desk. "I need your wand and quills." I said as I held out a hand.

He gave me a look of shock. "Malfoy I am not giving you my wand."

I moved my hand up and his wand and quills went flying into my hand. "You made this a lot harder then it had to be Potter. You need to write 200 lies saying 'I must not tell lies', all with this quill."

"How did you do that, your wand wasn't even out," he gawked at me.

"Wandless magic, you haven't heard of it?" I asked as I walked around to sit at the proffers desk at the front of the room. "Can't say I'm surprised, I would've thought that at least that mud blood friend of yours had of told you."

"No, I'm just surprised your strong enough to do it," he muttered.

I rolled my eyes and watched as he began to write. After a few lines a look of pain came across his face and blood started to run down his hand. I couldn't look at him because I wasn't able to face the guilt of torturing him. At least this had to be better then being a death eater, it wasn't my idea to do this to Potter, it was Umbridges. I was just supervising him.

After an hour had past I stood up and walked over to where he sat, looking at how many lines he had written. "Hurry up Potter, only 10 more lines." I sighed as I sat at the desk next to him. I grabbed my wand and muttered a numbing charm so that he wouldn't feel the pain.

He paused for a moment and looked at me. "Why would you do that?"

"I'm not a monster," I drawled, watching him as he wrote his last few lines.

He finally finished and I took his parchment and quill, walking it up to the office and grabbing his wand and other quills. "Malfoy if you claim you're not a monster then why are you doing an internship with Umbridge?" He asked, holding his hand out for his wand.

I held his wand back, upset about the question. "My Fathers a monster Potter, you should know that."

"But you don't have to be like him, there's another way," Potter said, softening his voice. I became increasingly annoyed at him trying to push his savior complex onto me.

"Well at least I have a Father, Potter I don't need you to try and save me from the life i'm living. For all you know i'm depressed and suicidal, but i could also be the happiest i've ever been. Stay out of my life," I said, shoving his wand into his hand and storming out of the room.

I fell into a routine over the next few weeks, once or twice a week I would meet with Umbridge for detention, not just with Potter but with everyone, then another time I would meet her for tea. She claimed it was so she could teach me about disciplinary actions and how best to get by in the world we live in, but I think it was so she could brag about how amazing she is.

I did enjoy having tea with her. It was easy to do, once I learned how to tune her out I was able to sit and enjoy the biscuits she provided and try all the different types of tea she offered me. I tried all sorts of different of leaves mixed with pixie dust or unicorn tears. One week she even surprised me with muggle teas. "To work in the ministry you have to interact with muggles, so you have to try and learn to like their tea," She claimed as she showed me all the leaves I could choose from.

I hated that I enjoyed spending time with Umbridge when it was during our tea times. In lessons and around the castle her voice was scratchy and she was just insufferable, but when it was just us and she was talking about how successful she is it was nicer. Perhaps it was just because I enjoyed someone taking an interest in me and wanting to teach me what they knew.

One Saturday in late October, long after the moon had taken the suns place in the sky I was walking back to the Ravenclaw common room after spending time with Draco and Pansy in Pansy's dorm. I was still in my robes as I went straight to them after my tea with Umbridge and I was beginning to hate the stairs up the Ravenclaw tower. As I walked towards the eagle knocker I saw someone sat outside, as I got closer I realized it was Cho Chang.

Once she heard the click of the small heel of my shoe on the ground she looked up. "Oh hi Malfoy," she said as she stood up.

"Did you get the riddle wrong?" I asked as I stood next to the knocker, she nodded and I laughed. "I did that once in first year."

"I've done it a few times while at Hogwarts," she said lightly.

I knocked and listened to the riddle. "Feed me and I live, give me a drink and I die, what am i?" The eagle knocker asked.

"Fire," I said, pushing the door open with Cho following close behind.

"I've never gotten that one right," Cho said sitting down on a chair. I was stood near the stairs leading up to my dorm and I stopped and stared at her for a minute. I couldn't tell if she was trying to get me to stay and make conversation with me.

"How long were you sat out there?" I asked, not moving from where I was stood.

"Like three hours, I got back just before curfew so when I got it wrong I lost hope and assumed I would be there all night," She started. "You were out so late and didn't get in trouble, how?"

"I'm like, Umbridges apprentice," I stuttered. I wasn't sure why I didn't want to tell her about it. I was proud of it with my parents and the Slytherins, even Potter and his gang. But telling people in my house just felt a bit embarrassing.

Cho gave me a blank stare. "Oh, that's, um," she tried to say.

I quickly stopped her. "You don't have to say anything. I'm just doing it to impress my parents, I'll probably get a job in the ministry one day so it's good experience."

As I started to walk away I heard Cho say,"goodnight Malfoy."

"Goodnight Chang." I said going up the stairs.

Two days later was Halloween and I sat with Pansy in her dorm doing her make up. I wasn't planning on going to the party with her but she begged me to dress up as cats with her and I couldn't say no. While I was drawing on whiskers she asked me, "Do you think Draco likes me?"

I had to hold back a laugh as i pierced my lips together. "You like Draco?" I asked.

"Well yeah kind of, he's really hot-"

"Don't call my brother hot!" I shouted, cutting her off mid sentence.

She had to clutch her stomach she was laughing so much and after a moment I joined her. I felt tears forming in my eyes and I couldn't remember the last time I genuinely laughed. "No stop laughing you're going to mess up your whiskers!" Pansy tried through laughs.

As I wiped away my tears there was a knock on the door and I walked over to get it. As soon as I opened the door Draco walked right in and stood near Pansy. "You're going as cats, how original," He commented. Both Pansy and I rolled our eyes.

"At least we actually dressed up," she said in response.

I walked over to her and whispered in her ear, "He's dressed up as your boyfriend."

She gasped and put a hand over her mouth, staring daggers at me. "Pansy where did you hide the alcohol?" Draco asked as he stepped on all the floor boards.

"That one over there," she said, pointed at one under her bed. "I still can't believe your parents supplied all of this alcohol."

"Our parents did what?" I asked Draco slightly shocked.

"I sent Father an owl asking for a bottle of that nice red wine you really like, I said I wanted to give it to you to congratulate you on your work with Umbridge, but then he sent a lot more then just the red, I'm not sure why," He said as he passed me the bottle of wine.

"Thanks," I said as i opened the bottle, taking a drink out of it. "Should we go?" I asked.

They nodded and we levitated the bottles down to the common room, where the party was already in full swing. Blaise came over to where we are and insisted on all of us doing shots of fire whiskey, and then of rum, and every other liquor that we had.

After an hour I had forced Draco and Pansy to dance together and I was hanging out with Blaise to try and keep him distracted. "What even are you dressed as?" He shouted over the music.

"I'm a cat, duh!" I shouted back, pointing at the black cat ears that sat on the top of my head.

"The mini skirt doesn't make it too obvious!" He said in response.

"It's longer than Pansy's!"

"It's not hard to have a skirt longer than Pansys!"

I rolled my eyes at his comment and turned to where Pansy was dancing with Draco, just to see that Astoria was now in her place. I bit my cheek and walked away, finding Pansy pouring herself a shot.

The moment she saw me she poured another one and passed it to me. "I don't even know what she sees in her, she's like a year younger and annoying." She sneered, having the shot and pouring another one.

I did mine and placed a hand on her shoulder. "He's a whore Pans, don't worry about it."

She gave me a weak smile and pulled me back out to where everyone was dancing. Apart from the 10 minutes she spent to make out with Blaise in attempt to make Draco jealous we spent the rest of the night and well into the morning together.
