♫♪ You Are My Sunshine ♪ ♫
*I included the song up above in case you don't know it! Or if you need a soundtrack to the heartache!*
Magnus and Alec hovered close by one another. It had become almost second nature for Magnus to tag along to missions, and although dangerous, Alec was always happy to have him there.
Today was no different to all other days. The Clave had given direction, a rogue warlock had been running amuck through Brooklyn and it was up to the New York institute to stop him or her. Magnus, out of principal alone, had been the first accept the mission being as how as High Warlock of Brooklyn, one of his own was causing trouble in his area.
"Magnus, stay close, I can't have you getting hurt"
"Look who's talking, don't I normally save you?"
"Not always" Alec argued back.
"Just most of the time." Magnus joked back. "but I'm not complaining. I won't ever let anything happen to that pretty little head of yours"
"Thank you darling" shot Alec back with a smile.
"UGH" came Jace behind them. "Must you two always be like this?"
"I know you aren't complaining blondie, since we have to put up with you and my biscuit sucking the air out of each other's lungs on a daily basis!"
The group of shadowhunters, and warlock, laughed out and continued their search. Everything was quiet so far. Their information had led them to a rickety old abandoned hospital on the outskirts of town. Unfortunately for them it was a big place, and with poor lighting, this mission was far too irritating.
"I think we should split up" said Alec to the group.
"Trying to get rid of us already?" came his parabatai.
"If only it was that easy. No idiot, we can cover more ground"
"I think that's a good idea." Came Isabelle.
Ultimately everyone agreed as they split up into groups. Magnus of course with Alexander.
They walked the creaking building in silence for a few minutes, before Alec stopped. His hand reaching out to pull Magnus back. He made a signal Magnus barely understood, at least not until he saw the spark of green magic shoot past them.
"The warlock is here!" Alec said out already pulling his bow ready.
"Show yourself! I am Magnus Bane, High Warlock of Brooklyn. You must know who I am. You must know this will not end well."
"WHY!" came a female scream. "Why would you side with the nephilim instead of us! Why are you helping them hunt me!"
Magnus searched his brain, trying to place a name to the magic. "Ameria?" he called out, when he finally did.
"Darling. You need to stop!"
Alec continued to search the room, trying to find her, while Magnus tried to distract.
"I can't! I'm going to die if I stop!"
"No. We won't kill you. Just please stop."
"I can't" she screamed again, but this time shooting magic at them. "I messed up! I attacked a mundane. I broke the accords. They will have me killed. I can't"
"Darling, I will help you."
"No, you can't. We all know. You and your shadowhunter. You won't help me. I have to help myself" She gave a laugh, finally losing it. "I'll hurt you before you or him can hurt me"
And with that started the fight. A slew of magic flew past, arrows zipped across. The old building echoed and groaned. Stray magic knocking into pillars and doorways crashing around them, as they gave chase. Another 10 minutes passed as Magnus could feel his magic beginning to grow tired. They gave chase into an old room of the building, he and Alec just barely darting out of the way as Ameria collapsed the entry way around them, trapping them and herself, within the rubble.
"Magnus" she cried out. Sounding weak, her magic probably already critically low. "I quit"
"Good girl. Just step out, hands in the air"
"Will you do the same?" she asked out
"Magnus, stop. This might be a trap" whispered Alec harshly.
"Of course my dear!" ignoring Alec's plea and his worried eyes. "See! I'm out. I'm going to walk towards the center. You do the same"
Magnus took the first couple of steps out and saw the scrawny little warlock do the same, but that's when he noticed it too. A ball of energy already in her hands. Within a second he could see it flying towards at him. Stupidly, he shut his eyes, bracing for an impact, he knew her magic was too weak to kill him it would just hurt like a mother. Instead, he felt the crushing weight of a body push him out the way as he fell onto his hands and knees. Heard the heart shattering crash of another body being flung across the room and colliding hard against the floor. He turned back to see his Alexander had taken the hit meant for him.
"I'm sorry Magnus. I'm sorry" Came the girl. Realizing what she had done. Several seconds too late. "I'm sorry. I'm...." she couldn't finish, before Magnus' shot his own magic through her. She crumpled to the floor like a rag doll, a pretty little hole where her center should be. Whatever pity or patience he'd tried having for her earlier was long dead now.
Magnus rushed over to Alec who was laying far too still on the floor. The burst of magic had struck him right against the ribs, the oozing of blood escaping him, his poor skin charred. A collection of slashes across his pale skin. A cut above his eye brow from where he'd probably smashed against the floor. Magnus panicked, reaching out to him, and trying to shake him awake.
"Alexander. Come on. Wake up. It's over. We're going to go home now" nothing.
Magnus grabbed him from under the arms, and dragged him gently to a better lit area. He found a crumbling old desk and sat back against it, the very unconscious Alec did very little, as Magnus pulled him against his own body. With one arm wrapped around him his other hand was already forcing magic into the horrible wound.
"Come on darling, I need you to wake up now. You can sleep at home!" he said in frustration, tears already burning his eyes.
It was several more minutes, and a painful amount of magic, as spots danced in front of Magnus' eyes. He was trying to heal as much as he could but the stupid girl had used up a lot of his magic.
"Alexander, please" he begged, as he finally saw fluttering eyelids reveal murky blue eyes.
"Mags?" he spoke out weakly.
"I'm right here darling. Right here"
"It's cold" he whined.
"I know. I know. It's ok, you'll be warm soon. We just need to wait a little while longer for Jace and the others to find us. Can you do that for me?"
"I think so. Magnus I'm so tired. Can I sleep a little?" he asked innocently as Magnus wiped the hair from his forehead. His poor hair was matted in sweat and blood.
"Promise me."
"what?"
"promise me, you will wait with me. You can't go back to sleep not yet. Please promise me" he said through tears.
"I promise. I'll stay"
"Good" Magnus' forced out, placing a kiss against the top of his head.
It was several more minutes, as Magnus tried his phone. No signal, what was taking them so long? He looked down at Alec's chest, blood still escaping his side. His magic could only do so much to heal, and unless the others showed up quick, Magnus' wasn't sure how much Alec could take.
"Magnus?" came the raspy voice.
"What is it my love?"
"Did we get her?" he asked. Still thinking about this stupid mission.
"Yes. She's gone. I got her. She can't hurt anyone ever again."
"That's good" he whispered out. Leaning his head back in the crook of Magnus' neck and shutting his cloudy eyes.
"no no. Alexander. You need to stay up with me. Come on!" Magnus begged out again. "The others will be here soon. Just a little longer" he prayed.
"But I'm tired. Please Mags, can I sleep now?" breaking Magnus' heart.
"Not yet. How about you tell me a story. Talk about something! Or sing a song!" he tried to make it sound exciting, trying to pass his own energy to him, but his heart was stuck too far into his throat.
"I can sing a song" he whispered out. Something fully awake conscious Alec would never do.
"Ok. Let's hear it then!"
"Don't laugh at me." He whispered. "You know I can't sing" he said out innocently, not really grasping what was going on.
"I won't" he sobbed out. Trying to force a little more magic into him, though honestly, it wasn't doing much.
"you are my sunshine.....My only sunshine..... You make me happy." He coughed out, a sickening wet cough, and gave a gasp for air, cutting of his sad little song.
"you're doing good! Keep singing sweetheart"
"You make me happy..... When skies are gray." Another gasp. "You'll never know dear...... How much I love you.......... Please don't take my sunshine away"
"Did I do good?" he asked. His eyes still closed as Magnus hugged him tighter against his chest.
"You did amazing! One more time please"
"Can you sing with me?" asked Alec weakly.
"Of course! We can take turns! I'll start.... You are my sunshine" he began.
"My only sunshine"
"You make me happy"
"When skies are gray"
"You'll never knowwww deeeear" Alec said weakly, slurring the final words. A raspy breath escaping his dried lips.
"How much I love you" Magnus sang again as fresh new tears began to pour from his eyes. Trying to shake his Alexander awake again.
Silence
"How much I love you" he practically screamed out, sobs shaking his body. Whatever magic remained in him, escaped with a heartbreaking scream of only the word 'no'. Bright sparks of blue magic hammering against the walls as dust kicked up around him, and the building shook in fear. He didn't care. The whole building could come down right now, and he wouldn't mind.
His sunshine had been taken away.
