3. Joy To the World and all that Jazz
-I finished it!-
Magnus sulked around in his apartment in his silken gown. Another Christmas had caught up to him. He took a sip of the spiked eggnog in his mug. An affectionate Chairman Meow rubbed against his bare leg and meowed up at him.
"Merry Christmas to you too" muttered Magnus. He snapped his fingers and a small cat toy popped up in his hand. Of course, he hadn't forgotten his fur child, tossing the little furry little mouse across the room and the cat chasing after it to play.
He absentmindedly reached for his phone and typed in the speed dial to his favorite person, but before he could click dial his phone sprang to life playing Alec's designated ringtone. He took a moment to drive the mopiness out of his voice an answered.
"Well hello my dear. I was just thinking about you. Merry Christmas Mr. Lightwood!" he said into the phone.
"Merry Christmas!" came the voice with the hint of a laugh. "So nice of you to think of me Mr. Bane."
"So, I wanted to ask" came the Nephilim on the other end. "If you aren't too busy with your party, maybe I could swing by and drop off your Christmas presents today, plus Catarina said you had some for me to pick up, is that alright?"
"Catarina?" Magnus' curiosity peaked at the sound of her name. When had she been in contact with his boyfriend? It mattered little. "Well, actually, if it's alright with you can I go to the institute to pick them up and gift you yours? You know, save you the trip. A portal is faster." That and it would mean Alec wouldn't see the truth about Magnus' 'party'.
"That would be great! Izzy has been wanting to see too and she has a gift for you as well. If it isn't too much of an inconvenience to you, please come over!"
"Trust me Alexander. It won't be an inconvenience at all."
They spoke a few minutes longer, set a time, and said their goodbyes as Magnus hung up the call. Magnus ran off to the bathroom to get ready, he had maybe 5 hours before the designated time, and even if it was only a break in his lonely Christmas, he make damn sure he looked amazing for it. Move over Sandy Claws, Magnus was coming for a visit!
--
In his excitement Magnus found himself ready far earlier than he expected, using his time to add a few additional presents to his bag. Isabelle, his biscuit, and even for the blonde-wonder. Hell, he'd even gotten one for Simon. Having somewhere to go this year had put him in a festive mood. Even his mood screamed for the festive holiday. He'd chosen to wear a tight red pair of leather pants and a decorative Tshirt with a happy little tree.
With a little pep in his step he made his way to the institute, a little early which was strange for him, but he couldn't help it. Once there he was greeted warmly by Alec with a simple kiss and brought inside and taking his coat.
"Come on in! We haven't really started anything yet. So, you're perfect."
Magnus followed him happily joining them in the library that had been decorated with a huge tree and a good collection of presents.
"How long do I have you for?" asked Alec cautiously.
"Forever if you'd like" came Magnus smooth response as Alec smiled at him lovingly.
"As much as I like the sound of that 'forever' I meant for this evening."
"oh" was all Magnus could muster, that's right. He'd have to leave at some point to keep up his charade. "A good while. Everyone knows the best parties start at night"
The excited clicking of running heels broke them up as Izzy practically tackled Magnus into a hug. "I am so happy you are here! It will be perfect now!" she said excitedly.
"Oh? Why do you say that?"
"You'll see! Your gifts are perfect!" she said before running off again.
"Speaking of which. We normally eat together before opening presents, will you stay with us to open?"
"Of course!" sang Magnus happily, grateful to be able to participate. "Where can I put down your gifts anyways?" he asked looking towards the tree that already seemed to be piled pretty high with gift boxes.
"oh, by the tree is perfect. Just look for the names. We divided everyone into piles to make it easier. Mine is the one in the corner with the darker wrapping. Jace is the one with rubber ducky paper. Izzy has the pink one."
Magnus looked through the pile, more piles than the people who were present. "Who's the glittery stack over there?" he asked upon seeing the pile of presents wrapped in paper that could practically blind a person.
"Oh, those are yours. Izzy found that, and she said it was appropriate. We all agreed"
Magnus' jaw dropped. "I have my own stack?" he asked in utter surprise.
"Of course. We all got you something, even Jace" Alec responded in a tone that felt as if Magnus having his own little pile was the most normal and expected thing in the world.
"Hope you don't mind. Since I invited you, we all decided to bring someone. Clary, Luke, Raphael said he'd come by at least for a bit, he'd even try to bring his sister to say hello. Even Simon is coming"
"You called him Simon" said Magnus in further shock.
"I figured I could acknowledge his name today. It's Christmas after all" Alec said with a shrug.
Magnus could feel his cheeks ache. He couldn't remember when he'd smiled this much before.
The time seemed to fly by. More faces filling the room all chatting happily like a big loving family. Each new face brought with it another handful of gifts as Magnus was thoroughly surprised each time anything was added to his.
The institute practically empty except for the Lightwood siblings and the collection of their friends. Magnus happily between them all. Dinner was enjoyable, the group thankfully ordering out versus taking up Isabelle's offer to cook for the night. The all cuddled in together on the couches they'd brought in to fit all the guests. A cozy little fire in the small fireplace as they all shared laughs and smiles.
"SO! Let's open presents! I'm giving mine first!" announced Isabelle grabbing two boxes. One from Alec's pile and another from Magnus'. She excitedly passed them into their hands and anxiously waited for them to open them.
"Magnus needs to go first! Open! Open! Open!" she added mischievously as he obeyed.
With the wrapping ripped open, he pulled out a new Christmas sweater and read the words on it before bursting into laughter. The words 'Good boys sit on Santa's lap; Naughty boys sit on mine.'
"This is perfect!" he said with a laugh.
"Not yet it isn't! Alec open up yours!" she commanded as her brother obeyed. A Black sweater with red letters across the chest that read 'I've been NAUGHTY'. The rest of the group burst into laughter, while Alec's face was almost as red as the letters.
Without a doubt, Magnus slipped his on before Alec reluctantly put on his. Isabelle and Clary both taking a picture and then the Christmas mayhem began. Torn gift wrap and tissue papers littered the floor as gifts and 'thank-you'-s filled the room.
Magnus excitedly opened his candies, make up, and other lovely trinkets. Alec had gifted him a new robe and some small things that he would cherish forever. Ironically, his favorite gift had been from none other than Jace! Whose idea of a gift had been ordering something called a 'glitter bomb' that exploded and spewed glitter all onto his clothes and hair, and onto Alec just because of close proximity. And although Alexander was not thrilled, Magnus couldn't help but laugh and appreciate the gesture. Besides, his gift to Jace had been a box filled of rubber ducks, so it was pretty fair.
With presents all opened Magnus cuddled into Alec's side. Cherishing perhaps the greatest Christmas of his life. Everyone seemed to be practically glowing in cheer. Clary was busy inspecting her new art set, Izzy was twirling around in the new dress she'd been given. Simon and Jace were bickering about which Christmas movie deserved to be first.
Magnus gave a content sigh. Things couldn't possibly be any better than this.
"Mags?" Came Alec's voice bursting his little bubble.
"hmm?"
"It's pretty late. Are you ok with staying this long?" he asked, with a sad pitch to his tone. Magnus pulled away and got up. He guessed all good things had to come to an end. He began to gather his gifts before tossing them into a portal for his loft. Alec followed behind to retrieve his coat. They were practically at the door when Alec finally stopped.
"Magnus. Do you really have to go?" he asked. His eyes pleading for Magnus to say he would stay.
"Yea. You know. Parties and all that" he muttered sadly. Kicking himself mentally, why not just tell the truth?
Alec pulled him into a tight embrace. Enjoying the feel of his body against his own.
"Mags. You know. You could stay. We'd all like for you to stay. I'D like for you to stay, but I understand your party must be really important, right?"
Magnus thought it through. What would he gain in going home to spend the rest of the night alone.
"Well. I mean." He fumbled for words. "I want to stay. Alexander. There isn't a party." He finally said. Burying his head into the crook of Alec's neck. "There was never a party. I lied. I panicked and lied. Truth is, I don't have anywhere to celebrate it. I'd like very much to have somewhere to fit in... and I'd very much like for that place to be here. With you." He let his truth spill out and waited for Alexander to say something. Anything.
Instead all he got was a tighter hug and a small chuckle. "I know" he said.
Magnus pulled back and looked at his face. "You knew?"
"Yeah. Catarina called. She told me." He answered. Damnit, Catarina! When had she spoken to him? When she'd asked for his phone!
"Magnus. You could have just said you didn't have a plan. You were always more than welcome to join me here."
"I didn't want to intrude." He said out softly. "You said it was 'tradition' who was I to break it?"
"You could never." He said gently before leaning in to leave a kiss on the warlock's forehead. "Not now and not ever. Same time next year. Come join us! Family tradition will include you from now on. Now come on. Let's go back to catch a good spot on the couch, the movie is starting by now"
Magnus was thrilled, but then he stopped. "You said you knew! If you knew why did you let me keep doing that to myself!"
"Catarina said it would be best if you came to terms with it. She said it would be good for you to admit it yourself." He said simply. "But it took you a while" he laughed.
Magnus would build her a shrine, probably after killing her for setting him up.
"Ready to join us?" asked Alec happily, extending his hand out invitingly to Magnus, who took it just as happily.
"Absolutely" he said with a smile entwining his hand into Alexander's. This seemed perfect. He'd found a place for himself. NOW he was sure that no Christmas could be better than this.
Magnus could practically burst at the seams with how happy he felt. He'd finally done it, he'd found a place just perfect for himself, and just like that, the boy who'd had one too many lonely Christmas' never experienced a lonely Christmas again.
