2. New Year's Kiss
At first sign of daybreak, who was he kidding, it was almost noon. Magnus Bane was not going to wake up early even if it was his own party. He got dressed fairly quickly knowing that he'd still have to set up somethings before dawning his latest masterpiece of an outfit.
He bustled around making sure there were enough flowers and when he was sure there weren't he snapped his fingers and practically doubled them. Same with streamers, he wanted noise, and joyous uproar!
He checked his clock again; Alexander was not one to be late, and although they hadn't decided on a time, Magnus was sure he should be there by now. Almost as if wishing him into existence the door opened, thanks to the key Magnus had gifted him Alexander walked into the room.
Walk; may not have been the best word. More like zombie shuffled in. And if the walk wasn't enough to scare Magnus the rest of the raven-haired boy was. His eyes looked red, runny, and swollen as if he'd been crying for days. His whole face was pale with the exception of the horrendously pink nose that Magnus could hear was horribly stuffed.
"Alexander! What happened?" he cried out reaching out cautiously out to stroke his cheek. It was probably the fact that he loved him so much that kept Magnus from putting on a Hazmat suit.
"It's ok" muttered Alec beyond hoarse, his voice barely above a whisper. "I can still help." Magnus reached a hand to his forehead.
"It is most certainly not! And no offence my dear, but I think I'd prefer you not touching anything."
Alec gave him a sad puppy eyed look as Magnus reached for his arm tenderly. "Alexander. You are burning up! You are sick. I told you, you would be! I should have given you a potion!"
Alec just shook his head. "What do you need me to do?" he semi-whisper talked again.
"Truthfully, I need you to go lie down. I'll make you a potion to get rid of whatever that is" he prompted guiding the poor boy to the bedroom and leaving him to sit on the bed. Quickly going off to prepare a simple mixture to help him get over this quickly.
When he returned Alec had simply laid back against the bed his long legs dangling over the side. His eyes closed apparently hadn't even tried getting into bed. Magnus lovingly snapped his fingers as his normal black clothes was switched instantly to softer flannel pajamas. Waking him with the intent to get him to sleep again.
"Drink this" he offered tucking in the shadowhunter and pulling covers up to his chin.
Although he didn't like that his Alexander was unwell, it was very rare for him to have a moment where Alec let himself be cared for.
"I'm sorry I can't help with your party" he mumbled weakly
"Don't you worry about that. I can handle it" Magnus reassured him and went off to finish the set up.
A few hours had passed as the guests began to arrive. The party in full blast. The chatter of voices and the clinks of drinks filled the air and Magnus ensured to greet every soul in his home. His party was a success. Warlocks, Vampires, Werewolves, and even a stray Seelie or two enjoyed themselves when a knock on the door revealed the last couple of guests to arrive.
"James, you made it." He greeted his lover's parabatai.
"Umm. Magnus his name is-" attempted Clary to correct him.
"shhh" Jace stopped her. "That's the closest he's ever been to my name. I'll take it."
The shadowhunters had arrived. Alec's sister Isabelle, Clary, Jace made their way inside and although some downworlders were visibly shaken by their appearance, the party continued without a hiccup once they saw their host greet them openly.
"Where's Alec?" Asked Isabelle, concerned for her brother. "He looked like death this morning. We tried to talk him into staying home but he said he had to come here to help."
"He is alright. He's in the bed room resting. I gave him a potion to make him feel better." Magnus reassured her.
He had been correct in saying this party would be amazing, as everyone was enjoying themselves. It was only about two hours before midnight would strike signaling the new year. Something seemed missing through, he just couldn't quite place it. The many smells of food filled the air, a rumble in his stomach reminding him he should eat, but before that he had something important to do.
He made his way into the dark room, a warm bowl of chicken noodle soup in his hands. Gently with his elbow he nudged the light switch revealing the poor boy was still napping. The potion would help him recover quickly, but it's drawback was that the drinker would probably be out for a while. He placed the bowl by the bed stand and shook him awake gently. The flutter of blue eyes opening made Magnus smile. No matter how much time passed, he'd never get tired of his gorgeous eyes.
"Hello sleepy head" he whispered waiting for sleep to release Alec enough for him to sit up. "I brought you soup."
Alec ate quietly as Magnus sat with him. Truth be told, a warm soup felt wonderful going down Alec's raw throat.
"Thank you" he gave with a smile as Magnus had him lay back down before joining the party again.
Back into his party world, Magnus did his due diligence of ensuring everyone was happy and was enjoying themselves. The alcohols never seemed to stop pouring as he saw several bodies dancing about to the music. Still something seemed missing.
Another hour had passed by as the final thirty-minute stretch of the year came crawling to the end. The groups, some incredibly drunk, had all begun saying what their best parts of the year had been. Magnus stopped to think. This year had been pretty good for him, it was a year without the drama of Sebastian or Valentine. He and Alec had been a happy couple the entire year. Nothing major, no catastrophes, it had been dull, but Magnus was beyond happy with it.
He listened as a couple more downworlders said their parts, Magnus was only partially paying attention, trying to still pinpoint the missing piece. His thinking was cut short when he saw Alec standing at the door way, although he did look a little better, he still looked too sick to be up out of bed. Magnus jumped out of his chair joining him quickly.
"Alexander, is everything alright?" he inquired in concern.
"They are loud" he muttered softly, sleep still heavy on him.
"I can fix that" promised Magnus pulling him back into the room and laying him down. A snap of the fingers as a simple shield appeared over the door as the music and loud talking of the party were muffled to a more tolerable level.
He sat beside him on the bed. "Are you feeling a little better?" he asked.
Alec cleared his throat, sounding already a lot louder than he had when he'd first shown up. "A bit."
"Good. I'm glad." Offered Magnus, his hand reaching up to move the stray hairs that had fallen across his forehead.
"I'm sorry" muttered Alec sadly throwing Magnus off for a moment.
"hmm? Whatever for Alexander?"
"I was supposed to help. And I didn't and now here you are taking care of me and missing your party"
"Alexander, don't feel bad. You are sick, it isn't your fault."
"I just wanted to spend a good new year with you."
Magnus looked at him, poor thing was sick, and he still wasn't thinking about himself.
"Here. Scoot over" instructed Magnus as Alec crawled into the bed next to him and cuddling close to him.
"But your party?" protested Alec.
"It will still be going on when I get back to it." He answered.
"Get some sleep. It seems to be working" offered Magnus but Alec just shook his head. "I'll stay up till midnight with you." He promised as the two just lay in bed together. Magnus was still with him when the sound of the party goers could be heard counting down.
"9.... 8.... 7...."
"It's almost time" said Alec sitting up in bed and was joined by Magnus who sat against him gently.
"3... 2... 1...."
"Happy New Year's Magnus. Kind of a shame that I can't give you a new year's kiss. Maybe next year?" offered Alec sadly.
"Oh no! I'm not missing that part! I'm not going to let a cold deny me that!" protested Magnus leaning in anyways and giving him a kiss.
The couple sat in bed smiling. Magnus had finally found what was missing at the party. His partner by his side.
With a little help Alec was tucked back into bed, and choosing him rather than some silly little party, Magnus got in close and waited for him to fall asleep. However, maybe it was the warmth, or maybe the little happiness he had being together now, before he knew it Magnus was also far off in dreamland. Deciding that he could wait till morning to clean and shoo away the party people.
The next morning, Alec shot out of bed in excitement. He felt a million times better, the potion had done its job!
"Magnus! Magnus wake up!" he said happily. Magnus opened his eyes slowly, his body ached as if he'd been hit by a train.
"Good morning" he tried to say but sounded like he'd swallowed a frog.
"Oh no. Don't tell me I got you sick! Must have been from the kiss!" cried out Alec reaching to touch his forehead against his boyfriend's. Sure, enough he felt on fire. "I'm sorry Mags!"
"Worth it"he squeaked out pathetically before laying back down and pulling the covers over his head. He didn't mind it, not one bit. He'd started off his new year with a kiss from Alec, and even if it got him sick, as long as Alec was by this side, this year would be amazing. He was sure of it.
