Sherlocked Pt.2 "Good Old Fashioned Villian"
Morgernstern. Johnathan fucking Morgernstern. He had been busting our asses recently putting people's lives at risk just to play a stupid game with Magnus. Magnus had been solving them in record time, due to the inevitable death if he didn't. The one we just started, two children had been kidnapped. We got to the building they had been taken from and Magnus immediately jumped into action. He began muttering to himself as he worked, bringing out his magnifying glass every now and then to inspect something. It was kind of hot to watch him work, but of course, I couldn't think like that right now. Kidnapped children and all. He muttered something to himself as he rose from where he was crouched before letting out a yell. "Blacklight! I need a black light!"
Detective Inspector Lewis immediately began calling out orders for a black light to be brought to the room. A few minutes later, the room was set up and a black light was shone on the wall beside one of the kid's beds. Written in some kind of oil was the words 'help us' with a trail leading down towards the door and into the hall. Magnus followed it with the black light into the hall and to the window. Though the window was closed, it was the obvious entrance and exit point for the culprit. Magnus dropped to the floor and scraped a portion of a large footprint that must have belonged to the kidnapper from a boot that had been drenched in oil. He put the sample into an evidence bag and walked off wordlessly. I followed him into the cab and sat quietly beside him, knowing he was most likely in his mind palace. I gazed out the window at the usual London rain as it drizzled down. Magnus mumbled things under his breath I couldn't quite make out as we drove along.
We got to the hospital after a short five minute drive. Before the car had even fully stopped, Magnus was already out the door and charging into the hospital. I knew he was going straight for the lab, so I paid the driver and followed after him slowly. I walked down a long hallway, drawing closer to the lab. As I turned the corner before the lab door, I almost smacked into two people furiously making out against the wall. When they saw me, they jumped apart. Raphael and Simon both had equally red faces as I stared at them in disbelief. "U-uh, I have to go." Simon muttered, leaving quickly.
As soon as he was out of my sight, I heard him start running. I turned to Raphael with a questioning look. "Don't tell anyone, especially not my brother. I would never hear the end of it." He pleaded, fixing me with a hard stare.
I held my hands up. "I won't tell anyone. But um, answer this question. How long?" I replied, unable to stop my smirk from growing.
Raphael turned even redder. "T-t-three months." He whispered, I could just barely hear him.
My eyes widened. "You know you won't be able to keep it a secret from him much longer. Especially if you're making out outside the room he's working in." I laughed.
Raphael chuckled softly. "Very true. But until he figures it out, not a peep from you. Or you will have the power of the British Government on your ass." He replied with a wink before strutting off to find his lover.
I chuckled before pushing the lab door open gently to not disturb Magnus. He sat at a desk with his eye pressed to a microscope, muttering to himself under his breath. I sat on a stool across the table from him and watched as he worked. His long, elegant fingers turned the magnifying knobs slowly, slowly turning me on as well. 'Stop. You can't think like that right now.' I mentally chided myself.
I kept watching as Magnus' mumbling became more intense. Eventually, he shot up from the microscope, closing his eyes and waving his hands around in the air. 'Mind palace.' I thought, knowing he was sifting through options.
His eyes shot open. "We need to go to the big abandoned coal warehouse. That's where the children are! The vegetation from the shoe matches what grows there." He declared, leaving the room swiftly.
I followed him and pulled out my phone. I called Simon and barked what Magnus had said to him. Sherlock and I got in the cab, and told the driver to go as fast as possible.
*****************
The children had been there, just like Magnus had said. They were being fed candy injected with mercury, so we found them just in time. The weirdest thing was that the older of the children had screamed bloody murder when Magnus had tried to talk to her, so Simon asked us to leave. Now Magnus and I were now lounging around the flat. He had a sad triumph written across his face, he knew it wasn't over. My thoughts were interrupted by a loud banging at the door. Before either of us could say a thing, the door burst open. The police squad came barging in and tearing up the place. "What the hell is going on?!" Magnus yelled, shooting up from his chair.
The superintendent stepped forward, as cuddly looking as ever. "Magnus Bane. You are under arrest for the suspected kidnapping of two children, and attempted homicide." He said, glaring at us both. "Mr. Lightwood, you'll be coming in for questioning as well."
Magnus looked absolutely disgusted. As someone slapped a pair of handcuffs onto us. One side on my wrist, the other on Magnus'. "This is ridiculous! He didn't do anything!" I laughed, in disbelief of these idiots.
The superintendent glared at me. "We have every right to believe he did. He's a lunatic!" He growled.
I laughed loudly before staring him down. When he took a step closer, I reared back and punched him square in the nose. He stumbled back, clutching his nose as blood dribbled down slowly. His eyes were lit with anger as he stared at me. "Run." Magnus whispered, so we did.
We ran from the house, down the stairs and charged out the front door. As we got onto the street, we realized the house was surrounded by cops. They all turned to us as we shot out the front door and came to a dead halt. Without hesitation, Magnus pulled a gun from his pocket and stuck it against the side of my head. "This is my hostage!" He yelled, I heard him safety the gun. (Though I knew he would never even accidentally pull the trigger.)
"Hostage! Okay, lets go with that." I mumbled.
Some of the police looked stunned and unsure of what to do as we kept backing away slowly. "Alright, now run!" Magnus whispered, and we took off again just as the superintendent burst from our home.
We ran down the street and into an alley. Unfortunately, we were blocked by a tall iron gate. Magnus wasted no time in getting over it, causing both of us to be stuck for a moment. "Magnus!" I hissed, grabbing the front of his coat and pulling him right to my face to stop him.
In the heat of the moment, this had seemed like a great idea. Now that we were actually face to face... my cheeks heated up as I gazed deep into those gorgeous amber eyes. I watched as his eyes glazed over with something and his gaze kept flickering to my lips. Before I could stop myself, I pulled him closer so the gap between us was closed. Our lips met forcefully, and we froze. After a second Magnus began furiously kissing back. His free hand slipped through the bars and held my cheek, pulling me closer still. While the hand that was handcuffed to mine, found my hand that was stuck dangling close to the top of the gate and laced our fingers together. So long I had waited for this moment, not really sure if it would ever come. His lips were surprisingly soft and warm. Much too soon, we both pulled away. Mainly because we needed to breath. "If we're gonna do this, we have to do it together." I rasped, still not believing what I just did.
A smile tugged at Magnus' lips. "I agree." He whispered, before pulling me in for one more passionate kiss.
"You have no idea how long I've been waiting to do that." He murmured against my lips when he pulled away.
"Ditto." I laughed.
Magnus chuckled before finally helping me over the gate. We kept running, our hands still laced together. "Do you know what's happening?" I asked him as we ran.
"Morgernstern." He sighed, speeding up his pace.
*****************
After two more minutes of running we ended up in front of a small townhouse. "Who lives here?" I panted.
"A reporter. Though not a very nice one." He muttered gravely.
I followed him inside, a bit disappointed when Magnus let go of my hand. He rapped on the door three times before it opened. A short women stood there. She had a plump, childlike face and was wearing all pink. "Magnus. Come in." She glowered, stepping aside so we could get in.
We stepped into the small house and Magnus asked for a bobby pin. She disappeared then came back a second later with one. Magnus quickly picked the lock on the handcuffs and tossed them across the room. "Maureen Brown. Too late to get my story in he papers?" He asked, fixing her with a hateful stare.
"I gave you a chance Bane, it really is too late." She snarled, smirking wickedly.
As she spoke, soft footsteps sounded in a hallway behind us. Magnus and I turned to be met with the cruel face of Morgernstern. Magnus' lip curled as he went to say something, but Valentine was quicker. "NO! You stay away, AWAY from me!" He screamed.
Maureen quickly came over and stood between him and Magnus. "Stop it! You've already done enough to Sebastian!" She yelled, shielding him from us.
Magnus' face hardened but said nothing. "What the hell is going on?! That's JONATHAN not Sebastian!" I shouted, pointing accusingly at him.
"No! My name is Sebastian Verlac. Jonathan Morgernstern was fake. I'm an actor! He paid me to be his fake arch nemesis." He stuttered, cowering behind Maureen. "Please, Alec. I know you're a good guy. I know you believe me, and that you won't hurt me. Don't be like him!"
I couldn't believe the bullshit that was coming from his mouth. "No, I need to see proof." I said, hatred bubbling up inside of me.
Maureen shoved past Magnus and reached into her bag, pulling out a news article with the headline: 'Magnus Bane, Fraud!' The details of the article consisted of bullshit on how Magnus paid "Sebastian" to be his enemy and commit all those crimes. "I don't believe a word of what he is saying." I murmured, amazed at how anyone could believe it.
"I'm the storyteller! My show airs in Paris. I read stories about braves warriors who battle demons." He exclaimed, pointing at the papers again. "Show them!"
Maureen riffled through the papers until she located several newspaper clippings in about the beloved storyteller who has shows in English and French. There was also some clippings about awards he'd won, a resume, and so much more evidence. "I'm the storyteller." He whispered weakly. "Just tell them, tell them! It's all coming out now."
Magnus smirked and took a step towards him while he was mid sentence. "No, NO!" He shrieked. "Don't you come near me, don't you lay a FINGER on me!"
"STOP IT! STOP IT NOW!" Magnus yelled over top of him.
With that, Jonathan turned and shot down the hallway. Magnus and I followed him close behind. "Please don't hurt me!" He repeated as he ran.
He slammed a door behind him and by the time he opened it, he had already climbed out the window and disappeared. "He'll be wanting back up soon." Magnus muttered, turning to storm towards the front door.
"Magnus Bane, I've been watching what you do for the last twenty four hours. And you know what? You repel me." She laughed, standing back as we left.
We went out into the street and stood in front of her house. Magnus scratched the back of his head with the gun he was holding. "Can someone do that? Change their identity overnight?" I asked, watching him as he laced anxiously.
"Yes. He's been in people's heads for a while now. He's making it so believable. He has my entire life story. He's taking lies and wrapping it up in one big truth, me." He muttered, still pacing. "There's only one thing he needs to do to complete his game. And that's to-"
Magnus stopped pacing and stood stalk still, staring at nothing, his back to me. "Magnus?" I asked.
"There's something I need to do." He murmured.
"Anything I can hope with?"
"N-no. I need to do this on my own."
Magnus turned to face me, he stared at me for a long moment, letting his eyes roam over my body. A blush rose in my cheeks as I felt the weight of his gaze. He took a few steps slowly closer. It was agonizing, I knew what was coming, yet he was moving so slowly. He came to a slow stop in front of me and grabbed my face with both hands. He gazed deep into my eyes, as if he could see right into my soul. He brushed some of my hair from my cheek as he lowered his lips down to mine. The kiss was slow and passionate. We moved rhythmically together as I clutched onto the back of his coat. He pulled away slowly and hesitantly. I stared back at him as he brushed a finger against my lips. "I'll see you later." He whispered, leaving me in a hormonal mess.
I watched as he walked away down the street, the last swish of his coat disappearing around a corner. Several thoughts were crossing my mind all at once, but one rang the loudest. I turned, going the opposite way from Magnus to do what I needed to do.
*******************
I sat in the large, cushioned chair, waiting for him. I heard the door open behind me, so I started talking, praying it was him standing there. "Have you seen the papers lately? This Maureen really did her research. And how could he possibly know? Who would Magnus tell? The only people in his address book are you and I, and I certainly haven't been sitting with him for morning tea."
Raphael sighed loudly as he sat in the chair across from me. "Alec, listen-" He began, but I cut him off.
"So you did sell out your own brother. That's just great. So all that watch his back shit? Was that 'Watch his back because I fucked up'?" I laughed, remembering a conversation we had had a few weeks ago.
"Alec. You don't understand. Valentine has a computer code that can access anything. That's how he got the Crown Jewels, how he opened the vault in the Bank of England, and how he opened every cell at Pentonville Prison. So we... got ahold of him. And questioned him extensively. But he wouldn't talk, no matter what we did. I found out I could get him to talk, only a little, if I gave him information about Magnus' past." He explained desperately. "I didn't reali-"
"Morgernstern wants to destroy Magnus. You just gave him the perfect ammunition." I cut him off, smiling thinly.
I got up and nodded a tight goodbye. "Alec, I'm sorry." He whispered, head in his hands.
I laughed as I turned and left the room. "Please tell him that I am!" He called after me.
I raised my middle finger over my shoulder as I left the building. Hating the sight of him at that moment. I walked out of the building and onto the desolate London street. Just then, my phone buzzed.
'Come to the hospital lab.
MB'
I sighed as I went to a main road to hail a cab.
****************
I ran into the lab to see Magnus sitting on the floor playing with a ball. "Got your text." I said, slightly breathless.
"Obviously." Magnus replied, standing up.
I rolled my eyes as he leaned against the counter. "Morgernstern planted the computer code in 221B when he came over the day of the verdict. It has to be there." He muttered.
"Well, did he touch anything?" I asked.
"No, just an apple." He replied, rolling the ball in his hand.
I sighed and went and sat on a nearby stool. I rested my head against the table, trying to think. Within seconds, the exhaustion took over and I fell asleep.
****************
What felt like two minutes later I was awoken by my phone ringing. I groaned as I answered it. "Hello?"
"Hello, is this John Watson?"
"Yeah, yeah it is."
"This is the paramedics. It's about Dorothea. She's been shot."
"O-Oh god. Is she okay?"
"It's hard to say now. You might want to get over to 221B just in case these are her final moments."
"Yeah, of course. I'll be right there."
I hung up and pulled my coat on. "That was the paramedics. Dot's been shot. Probably by one of those bastards who wants that damn code." I explained, turning to him expectantly.
"You go, I'm busy." He replied, still playing with the ball.
"W-what?! Don't you care about her?!" I exclaimed, taken aback by his response.
"She's my landlady." He retorted.
"Y-you freak! You machine!!! Do you not- you know what? Screw this. I'm going. You stay here, alone." I cried, turning to the door.
"Alone is what I have. Alone protects me." He replied
"Nope! Friends protect people!" I yelled back, throwing him one last glare before I slammed the lab door behind me.
*****************
As soon as the cab pulled up in front of 221B I hopped out and ran inside the flat. Dot was standing near the stairway watching a man fixing something on the wall. I tapped her shoulder and she turned to face me. "Alec! Did Magnus and you work everything out with the police?" She asked cheerfully.
Realization dawned on me when I figured out I had been tricked. "Oh my god." I whispered.
I turned and ran from the flat without another word. I quickly hailed a taxi and yelled for him to go to St. Bart's Hospital.
*****************
When I got out of the cab, my phone began ringing. I pulled it out and answered it. "Hello?"
"Alec! Turn around and go back the way you came." Magnus yelled down the line.
"Um, okay? I was just coming inside." I replied, turning back to where I had been.
"Okay, stay there. Now look up. I'm on the roof." He said quietly.
I slowly looked up to see a tall figure in a black coat standing on the ledge of the roof. I felt my heart shatter into a million pieces at the sight. "Oh my god." I murmured under my breath.
"Now, Alexander. I want you to listen very carefully. I... I was a fake. Everything I did was fake. Tell everyone, Dot, Simon, Clary... hell, tell anyone who'll listen. I was a fraud." Magnus said, it sounded strained, like he was holding back tears.
"No, no you're not. The first day we met. The first day. You asked if I was from Afghanistan or Iraq. And you knew about my parents!" I argued.
"No one could ever be that clever." He laughed.
"You could." I whispered, a tear rolling down my cheek.
He paused for a second. "I looked you up. I discovered everything I could about you, to impress you."
"No, that's not true, Magnus." I said, getting angrier with this madness.
"It's just a trick Alexander, an illusion." He replied.
"Stop, stop it right now Magnus." I yelled, starting to walk again to get inside the hospital to get him off that damn rooftop.
"No! Stay right where you are. Please, do this for me." He screamed.
"Okay, alright. Do what?" I asked.
"This phone call, its my note. That's what people do right? Leave notes?" He whispered.
"Magnus, no! Whatever you're about to do, don't you da-" I began, only to be cut off.
"I love you."
"W-what?" I croaked.
"I love you Alexander."
My heart shattered. The words I had longed to hear... but not like this. "Magnus-"
"Do you love me?"
"Ma-"
"Do you?! Please, I-I just need to hear you say it." He sobbed.
"Yes Magnus. I love you so much. More than I ever thought I would." I whispered, tears falling freely down my face.
"I'm so sorry. Goodbye, Alexander. Aku cinta kamu." He whispered.
"Magnus, please don't." I cried, watching as he threw his phone to the side.
I tore my phone away from my ear and shoved it in my pocket. "MAGNUS!" I screamed.
It was no use, I watched in horror as he tipped forward and fell. Everything seemed to move in slow motion. His arms flailed and his coat flew behind him. I was screaming, unaware I was making any noise. He kept falling, light reflecting off the tears rolling down his face. He disappeared behind a building covering the ground in front of me, but that didn't stop me from hearing a loud thump. "Magnus!" I shouted again, throat raw.
I started to run forward, only to be hit by a biker. I fell down, smacking my head on the rough gravel. I got up slowly, feeling dizzy and discombobulated. All I knew was that I needed to get to Magnus. I got to the right ring surrounding his body and began to push my way through hazily. "Please, please he's my friend. Let me through." I tried to shout.
I stumbled and fell beside his body. His face was covered in his blood, the worst parts smashed into the ground. His usually life filled amber eyes stared upward lifelessly. I grabbed his hand closest to me and laced our fingers together. With my other hand I felt the pulse on his wrist. Nothing. No beat. No pulse. Before I even had enough time with him, his hand was ripped from mine as paramedics hoisted him onto a stretcher and rolled him away. The realization set in as I sank to the ground. When it finally sunk in, when the fact that the man I had finally confessed my love to was dead sunk in, I started to cry. A loud, horrible, ugly cry. The one of a man who'd just had the love of his life snatched away from him far too soon. I looked at my hand, some of Magnus' blood coated it. As I stared at it, the tears fell harder. I let out a loud, ungodly shriek of pain. A noise no human should ever be capable of making. My heart felt like it had been ripped out and broken a million times. Seeing Magnus like that would scar me forever.
When your body is in so much pain it can't handle it, you blackout. That's exactly what happened to me.
****************
I stood in front of his headstone, staring at the golden letters etched into the dark stone. Dot patted my shoulder lightly and walked away, leaving me alone with him. I wanted to say something, but what? I just felt so empty. I spent all my emotions that day when he... when he jumped. I breathed in a shaky breath and patted his gravestone. "M-Magnus." I started, voice breaking. "I-I just wanted to say... I'm sorry. I'm sorry for calling you a freak. You're not. You were the greatest man I have ever known, and no one could ever convince me you're anything but amazing. I love you Magnus Bane. No one or thing will ever change that, ever. I-I was so lost and so alone. You saved me, and I owe you more than I could ever give you."
I went to walk away, but stopped myself and turned back around. "There's one more thing Magnus. J-Just one more thing... for me. Please, don't be dead. Tell me you love me one more time, hold me one more time. Please, just something. Just stop being dead." I whispered, and for the first time in the two weeks since it happened, I cried.
I cried as hard as I could. I cried so hard it made me physically ill. I fell to the ground in front of his gravestone and clutched my chest, unable to get enough air into my lungs to cry as hard as I was. I hit the grass as hard as I could and ripped it up with my fingers. The unfairness of the world and the wickedness of Morgernstern had the anger bubbling up inside of me. And I finally let it all out, I finally let everything go.
