Chapter VII: Unstoppable

For most, the majority of our days are mundane and uneventful. We wake at a scheduled time, go about our daily routine, and at night we lay our heads down to sleep, only for the process to repeat itself the following morning. These days are the ones we forget, lost in our memories. Occasionally, there comes a day that holds special meaning or some significance. A job promotion, a birthday, a funeral. Though these days might hold importance for an individual or some select few, but in the end, they are ultimately lost, consigned to oblivion in the history of everything. And then there are days that will be remembered for years to come. When the world has been populated with new blood and new generations, when time has passed to the point where no one from the old generation is still alive, there will be days that the scholars will study, and the children will learn about. Days that will teach, instruct, and serve as a warning. Days, quite like today, that will never be forgotten.

The crowd is in shock as Pyrrha Nikos, the Pyrrha Nikos, stands over the dismembered body of what everyone once thought was a girl, but who was now revealed to be a machine. People wince and cover their ears as feedback whines from the loudspeakers, only to be replaced by a mysterious voice.

"This is not a tragedy. This was not an accident. This is what happens when you hand over your trust, your safety, your children, to men who claim to be our guardians, but are, in reality, nothing more than men."

You can hear the people around you muttering, no doubt asking what is happening, hoping to receive some form of assurance, like a child places faith in their parents.

"Our academies' headmasters wield more power than most armies, and one was audacious enough to control both. They cling to this power in the name of peace, and yet, what do we have here?"

You see General Ironwood angrily rise from his seat and exit the arena. Teetering on the edge of your seat for several seconds, you do the same.

"One nation's attempt at a synthetic army, mercilessly torn apart by another's star pupil. What need would Atlas have for a soldier disguised as an innocent little girl. I don't think the Grimm can tell the difference. And what, I ask you, is Ozpin teaching his students? First a dismemberment, now this. Huntsmen and huntresses should carry themselves with honor and mercy, yet I have witnessed neither."

Peoples' eyes on you, murmuring behind raised hands as they nod their heads in agreement with the faceless voice. Several figures point at you, no doubt wondering about what immoral things you'd been taught during your time at Beacon.

"Perhaps Ozpin felt as though defeating Atlas in the tournament would help people forget his colossal failure to protect Vale when the Grimm invaded its streets. Or perhaps, this was his message to the tyrannical dictator that has occupied an unsuspecting kingdom with armed forces. Honestly, I haven't the slightest clue as to who is right and who is wrong. But I know that the existence of peace is fragile. And the leaders of our kingdoms conduct their business with iron gloves."

Your robes billow behind you as you briskly walk through the tunnels that make up the back stage. The dim lighting causes shadows to flicker across your determined face. Two young women exiting a bathroom turn and run back inside at the sight of you.

"As someone who hails from Mistral, I can assure you, the situation there is... equally undesirable. Our kingdoms are at the brink of war, yet we, the citizens, are left in the dark."

Reaching the competitors' changing area, you dig your hand into the inner folds of your robes and produce your scroll. Pointing it at a locker, the red light turns green as the door hisses, swinging open.

"So I ask you, when the first shots are fired, who do you think you can trust?"

The voice disappears, replaced by the kingdom's loud emergency siren mixed with the screams coming from the audience now scrambling for the exits. Rhino's Charge wrapped over your shoulder, you begin to walk out onto the arena, rolling back the cuffs of your sleeves as you prepare for the inevitable.

From above comes a repetitive crashing as a Nevermore pecks away at the dome shaped energy field separating the outside world from the arena. Directly below, still staring at Penny's disassembled figure, is Pyrrha, seemingly unable to process what is happening. Running towards her is Jaune, calling out to his friend to snap out of it. The Nevermore ascends, only to divebomb the arena. Breaking through the energy field, the great avian Grimm descends on Pyrrha and Jaune, landing directly in front of them creating a shockwave that sends them flying backwards.

Spreading its wings, the Nevermore charges at a downed Pyrrha. Running towards her you slide to a halt between the giant and your ally. The great black bird lowers its head in preparation to swallow its meal. Pulling your arm back, you twist up on the ball of your back foot and deliver a powerful punch straight to the Nevermore's beak, a (F/C) shockwave forming at the point of impact. The Grimm is sent flying backwards, its beak cracked down the center as it caws in pain.

"On your feet Pyrrha." You say. "We have a job to do."

The Nevermore is back on its feet, approaching you slowly as it builds up speed. You unravel Rhino's Charge, holding the rope in your hands as the heavy weight falls to the ground. You add a slight bend to your knees, your eyes narrowing as you prepare to take the beast down. And then, very suddenly, without you doing anything, the bird drops. Lodged in its back and wings are around a dozen metal lockers. The doors swing open on their hinges, and behind you more students rush to grab their weapons.

The Nevermore stirs, slowly getting back on its feet. The students jump off, Ren striking the creature's beak multiple times as he does so. You watch as Arslan sweeps Yatsuhashi off his feet and Sage bend his knees, jumping high into the air. Nora brings Magnhild crashing down on the creature's head, and the two heavy swordsmen cleave it from its body.

Jaune helps Pyrrha to her feet, offering her her weapons. More Grimm begin gathering above, Griffons pouring in the opening the Nevermore had created. Ruby summons her locker, the door swinging open to reveal Crescent Rose. Just as she's about to reach for it, one of the Griffons lands on the metal locker, releasing an ear shattering roar before being scared away by a shot from Professor Port.

"Students." He says. "I think it would be best for you to leave."

Ruby protests. "But we can..."

"Miss Rose." Oobleck stops her. "This day will surely go down in Remnant's history. I'd prefer it if my students could live to tell about it."

Ruby nods, and the collection of students from the different huntsmen academies run towards the docking zone where you all run into General Ironwood.

"What's going on?" Ruby asks.

"Grimm are crawling all over the city. The White Fang have invaded Beacon, and to make matters worse, some... vagabond has seized one of my ships."

"Yang." You say, eyes growing wide.

"Until we regain control the skies are out of our control. So I'm..." he draws his pistol and shoots a Creep in the head, "going to take it back."

"What should we do?" Jaune asks.

The General turns, folding his hands behind his back. "You have two choices. Defend your kingdom and your school, or save yourselves. No one will fault you if you leave." Turning, he calls out to his soldiers. "Let's move out."

With that, he boards a small airship and takes off.

"I mean, come on." Sun almost laughs.

"We can take a ship, to Beacon." Jaune says.

Everyone runs off. Everyone except for you and Ruby. You want to return to the ground as soon as possible and find Yang, make sure she's okay. But at the same time you know Yang would kill you if you were to ever let anything happen to Ruby.

"Little Flower, we need to get moving."

"No." Ruby says. "Ironwood's right, we need to get his ship back."

"But..."

"Go with the others, I'll be fine."

"I won't leave you." You say firmly.

"Just go!"

Ruby disappears in a red blur, trailing rose petals in her wake. Part of you knows you should go after her, but eventually your desperation to find Yang wins out, and you meet the others near an airship.

"(F/N), over here!" Jaune says, waving you over.

"Where are the ships?" You ask impatiently.

"They're finishing evacuating the citizens, but they'll be back any minute."

"That's not soon enough!" You say angrily. "We need to be on the ground now!"

"Yeah but, we can't... wait, what are you. (F/N)!"

Ignoring Jaune's calls, you run over to the edge of the platform and dive off the edge. Pinning your arms to your sides, you straighten your body to increase your velocity. The wind whistles loudly in your ears as the ground fast approaches. An earthshattering 'boom' sounds as a football field sized crater appears in the fairgrounds, empty except for burning tents and Grimm, feasting on bloodied corpses. The resulting shockwave sends any nearby Grimm flying backwards as you rise to your feet, brushing dirt from your now torn robes. Your body glosses over with a dull (F/C) sheen as you acclimate to the sudden intake of kinetic energy before you begin racing towards Beacon's campus off in the distance.

You feel like you might vomit, your stomach riddled with fear at the idea of Yang laying trapped under some collapsed concrete, or worse, at the hands of some White Fang members. You hear an explosion from overhead and look up to see a bullhead falling from the sky. You increase your speed.

You're almost there. Just a few hundred more meters. Once inside, the issue would be finding Yang in the middle of all the chaos. You can hear people screaming from campus as you get closer, gunfire and the roaring of Grimm piercing through the night sky. The back of the cafeteria building is in view now, growing larger with every passing second. You're just two hundred meters away when you stop. Midway between yourself and the campus are five Atlesian Paladins. They're larger and much bulkier than the prototype you glimpsed earlier in the semester, and they stand about five feet taller, putting them at just over two stories. Something seems off about the mechs, however. Shouldn't they be fighting the Grimm? And there are plenty of Grimm around, but they seem to be leaving them alone. They turn in your direction, like they can see you. Something definitely wasn't right. One of the Paladins mounted turrets starts spinning, and not long after you're diving out of the way of a flurry of large armor piercing bullets. Fortunately, the mechs' targeting system wasn't meant to pinpoint such a small target at such a far distance. The five towering machines start charging towards you. It didn't matter. Nothing would keep you from finding Yang.

Slowly, you start walking towards them, your speed increasing ever so slightly as you build up to a run, then a full sprint. In the past several months at Beacon, you'd learned much about what it meant to be human. What it meant to love and be loved. But Beacon was a school for huntsmen. And you hadn't attended the kingdoms premiere huntsman academy without learning a few new things about your semblance.

Opening your mouth, you release a loud war cry from your chest. Your eyes glow a bright (F/C), your aura flaring. As you continue running, your feet start to leave the ground, but your footsteps don't disappear, instead they get louder. Heavier. Onlookers would describe what they saw as a (F/C) giant. Your aura had extended, and you now floated in the middle of a twenty-five-foot-tall humanoid form. An exoskeleton made of pure kinetic energy which emanated from your body and transformed you into a colossus. A juggernaut.

You punched through the first Paladin with ease, completely destroying it and rendering it nothing more than a pile of scrap. The other four mechs encircled you, unloading their mounted turrets as they fired bullet after bullet. You felt none of them as they bounced off the impervious form, the kinetic energy only making you stronger. One of the mechs fired off a rocket from its wrist. Catching it, the explosion caused your semblance to surge. The smoke obscured your visions for a moment, and by the time it cleared, two of the Paladins had gotten closer. Each one grabbing one of your arms, they pinned you to the ground with a resounding crash. They were unsuccessful at their attempt at trapping you. Your right arm tore through the hunk of metal trapping it, reaching over to the one on the left. Grabbing the Paladin, you flung it from your body and threw it into the other two. Pushing yourself back to your feet, you towered over the three fallen Paladins. Raising your hands high over your head, you bring them crashing down atop the bots, destroying them.

Breathing heavily, the (F/C) colossus slowly started to shrink until all that was left was you. The exoskeleton was your secret weapon, your ace in the hole, but it required an astounding amount of kinetic energy and drained your reserves at an alarming rate. Shaking off the exhaustion, you resumed your trek towards the school.
