Chapter II: Rhinos and Guerillas
Standing on the other end of the arena was a man of about your height, maybe a few inches shorter. He was donned in a black cloak, the hood casting a shadow over his face and obscuring his features. In his left hand was a recurve bow, a quiver of arrows strapped around his back. You couldn't quite determine how fit he was, the cloak being quite bulky and hiding any muscle he may or may not have. You'd have to wait until the two of you engaged before you could make any decisions to exploit his strength, or lack thereof.
Suddenly, several holographic screens appeared around the arena, each one shuffling through a selection of potential landscapes that would make up the battlefield. Several seconds later, the screens stopped. Your side landed on an image of a large tree. The ground under your feet began sprouting tall grass as an evergreen forest bloomed into existence. Across from you, the ground began shifting as large rocks erupted in jagged formations, several crags protruding high into the sky. As the ground stopped moving, a loud buzzer sounded, signaling the beginning of the match.
As always, you bent at the waist and brought your head down in a respectful bow. Unfortunately, it seemed Wilhelm did not share your sense of honor, and with your head still stooped, eyes at the ground, you heard a sharp 'twang' as the string on his bow released. Lifting only your eyes, you saw an arrow flying your way. Years of training however had made your reflexes sharp, your reaction speed faster than a bullet. Your arm quickly whipped up from your side and your fist clasped around the shaft of the arrow, stopping it just centimeters from your eyes.
Standing erect, you threw the arrow to the side as an audible gasp sounded from the crowd, who was clearly impressed. Several boos accompanied the gasp as several audience members hissed at Wilhelm's lack of respect. Loudest of the protests was Yang, who you could hear over the rest of the crowd as she heckled Wilhelm. The two of you began slowly walking towards one another. Wilhelm drew another arrow from his quiver and sent it flying your way. Again, you caught it, your pace increasing to a light jog. Another arrow flied through the air, and another, and another. Again and again you caught the arrows and snapped them in half or discarded them to the side. Now in a full sprint, Wilhelm ceased firing, instead brandishing his bow as if he were readying to strike you across the face. As the two of you got within fighting distance, you instinctively ducked to avoid his bow, but were surprised to find instead of a bow passing over your head, Wilhelm's entire body had. A bluff, allowing him to get behind you. Quickly turning, you saw him release three arrows from his bow simultaneously. Stepping forward with your right leg, you threw your body down, the head of Rhino's Charge whipping over your shoulder and knocking the arrows from their path. Looking up, you saw the flap of Wilhelm's cloak disappear into the trees before he disappeared completely from sight.
"It appears that young Mr. Schwarz has retreated into the forest." Professor Port announced.
"Yes, yes." Dr. Oobleck nodded. "Though Vacuo is a primarily barren landscape, devoid of any plant life or greenery, Mr. Schwarz was actually a student of Mistral Academy before transferring, where the forests are plenty."
"Mr. Schwarz favors guerrilla tactics," Port informed, "using his natural surroundings to get the drop on his enemies. However, Mr. (L/N) is no stranger to wildlife himself, having been raised deep in Vale's forested mountains at the mysterious Sun Zhang monestary."
As the two commentators continued to provide colorful background for the audience, you scanned the trees with your eyes, looking for any sign of irregular movement that might signal your opponent. Looking over the tree line, your eyes flickered back at the sight of several pine needles falling from the branches. Sure enough, an arrow was soon sent flying seemingly from the evergreen itself. Another arrow followed it, this one sent from a tree several feet to the left. You swung Rhino's Charge in a circular motion and maneuvered it across your body, the heavy head knocking any of the arrows away. It was times like these that Ruby's words echoed in your head.
"You know what would make your weapon even cooler?" She would say. "A gun."
Every time she brought this up you would dismiss her. It was your belief that guns were loud and clumsy. Rhino's Charge was precise and deadly. A meteor hammer, a weapon wielded by only the most skilled, the worthiest of defenders and warriors. Of course, the meteor hammer and its owners were expected to defend Sun Zhang against Grimm, and ever since attending Beacon Academy, it seemed you were fighting less and less Grimm, and more and more criminals and ruffians. More and more people with guns. And to be completely honest, your meteor hammer wasn't designed to fight weapons with such long range, something you were being reminded of at this very moment. If you had some sort of firearm, you might have been able to draw Wilhelm from the trees and into the open. Instead, you relented and began to move for the forest, knowing that if you didn't, the two of you would be playing a never-ending game of cat and mouse. Weaving out of the way of another arrow, you plunged headfirst into the forest.
Third Person POV:
Teams RWBY and JNPR were quite literally on the edge of their seats as they watched their teammate rush headfirst into danger. Ruby was actually standing as she leaned over the short wall that separated the audience from the arena. Fortunately, she was short enough that she didn't obscure the vision of anyone sitting behind her.
"Can any of you see either of them?" Pyrrha asked as she peered into the trees.
"Nothing." Jaune responded as the others shook their heads.
"It seems like the cameras can't see through the trees either." Weiss pointed out. Sure enough, the screens provided no clear image of the competitors, only images of trees and tall grass.
"Wilhelm's about midway up that tree there." Blake said suddenly, indicating the tallest tree on the right side. "(F/N) is about twenty feet to the left."
Everyone turns to look at Blake, surprise etched on their faces. Of course, the fact that she's a Faunus meant her eyesight was far superior to that of humans', which allowed her to continue to watch the match. For her friends' benefit, she continued to provide commentary on the events of the match.
"(F/N) is looking for Wilhelm. It doesn't look like he knows he's in the trees." Blake describes. "(F/N)'s about to walk right under Wilhelm. Wilhelm jumped out of the tree, but (F/N) hit him with his meteor hammer."
Yang hung on to every word Blake spoke, imagining her boyfriend locked in combat against Wilhelm. "What's happening now?" Yang asked her friend.
"I'm not sure." Blake replied. "They're too deep in the trees, I can't see past the branches."
A few more minutes passed, the crowd waiting in anticipation for something to happen. Suddenly, something flew from the trees and landed on the rocky side of the arena, causing the audience to gasp. Looking closer, Yang saw that it was (F/N)'s meteor hammer, but (F/N) was nowhere to be seen. Yang's heart rate accelerated, the suspense causing her to hold her breath. Another gasp sounded from the crowd as a figure was sent flying from the trees and crashing through several jagged rocks, skidding to a halt just several feet away from the weapon which appeared just seconds before. The upset dust obscured who it was, and the crowd all leaned forward in an attempt to identify which competitor it was.
As the dust settled down, the cameras zoomed in and provided an image of a figure in a ripped black cloak. Wilhelm got back to his feet, dazed and swaying slightly. His quiver was empty and his bow absent. Scrambling around, he reached down and grabbed Rhino's Charge, holding it unsure in his hands. Half the cameras focused on the other side of the stage and provided an enlarged image of (F/N) walking slowly from the tree line, his robes slightly torn, a long cut running across his cheek. In his hand was Wilhelm's bow, two arrows tucked in the cord around his waist, just on his right hip. Withdrawing one, he knocked it against the large recurve bow and drew the string. His fingers released, and the arrow was sent flying towards Schwarz. Wilhelm tried to swing the meteor hammer up to deflect the arrows like (F/N) had done earlier in the match, but he was inexperienced with the weight of the weapon, and his timing was off by several milliseconds. Wilhelm was inexperienced with (F/N)'s already uncommon weapon, whereas (F/N) was skilled with a wide array of weaponry, including the bow. Wilhelm just barely managed to duck the arrow in time, which was exactly what (F/N) wanted. In the split second when Wilhelm's head dropped, the hood of his cloak delayed, rising from his head by just an inch. It was in this small window that another arrow pierced the small slit of fabric above Wilhelm's head, the force of it sending him flying backwards, pinning him to a rock.
Wilhelm tugged on the arrow embedded deep in the stone in a panicked frenzy. Still tugging hopelessly on the arrow, his gaze turned to (F/N) whose eyes had started to glow a deep (F/C). His aura began to flare until his entire body flared a bright (F/C) color. Stepping back with his right foot in a runner's stance, (F/N) charged towards his pinned opponent with incredible speed while releasing a loud war cry. There was a loud crash, followed by a scream as Wilhelm was sent flying through the air towards Teams RWBY and JNPR. He would have landed right in Yang's lap if it weren't for the force field separating the audience from the arena. Wilhelm's face smooshed against the field before his body peeled off and he fell to the ground with a resounding crash.
"What a finish!" Dr. Oobleck shouted over the cheers of the crowd. "Mr. Schwarz is eliminated by both knockout and aura level. Mr. (L/N) of Beacon Academy wins!"
Reader's POV:
The blood stops pounding in your ears as youcome back from the heat of the battle. The cheers become louder and louder withevery passing second as you return to reality. Breathing heavily, you look up and see the entire stadium on its feet, several girls around your age blowing you kisses and batting their eyelashes. Ignoring them, your eyes sought outyour teammates, sat in the front row and all cheering, Ruby jumping up anddown. Your eyes met with Yang and you blew her a kiss, causing several girls inthe vicinity to shoot her dark envious glares. Walking forward and picking up Rhino's Charge, draping it back around your shoulders, you smiled and waved atthe crowd.
