Chapter XI: Runaway Train
You hear the trains wheels squeal as steam bellows from the engine car. The cars start to accelerate, taking off down the tracks.
"Well it sounds like they're going somewhere!" Yang says, throwing her arms up.
"We need backup." Ruby says as she pulls out her scroll. "Let me call Jaune." A Low Signal notification flashes on her screen. "I can't get through!"
"So, what do we do?" Weiss asks.
"I believe we only have one option." Oobleck says, pushing his glasses up the bridge of his nose.
"We're stopping that train." Ruby says, shouldering her scythe.
Ruby uses her semblance to take off after the train while Weiss uses a glyph to launch herself and Blake. Oobleck somehow manages to use his natural speed to hop aboard the back car, leaving you and Yang behind. You scoop her up into your arms, eliciting a small 'oh' of surprise. She wraps her arms around your neck and gives you a sultry look.
"Not now Yang." You laugh. Using your semblance, you kick of the ground, jumping high into the air and landing on top of the train.
"Hurry children!" Oobleck shouts over the sound of the train. "We must get to the front and stop this train."
"Uh, professor." Weiss interrupts, peering into one of the train cars through a hatch in the ceiling.
"Doctor." He says irritably.
"What's that." She asks, pointing at a flashing device in the car.
"That my dear." He says, kneeling to inspect the device closer. "Appears to be a bomb."
Everyone jumps back and away from the bomb.
"Enemies incoming." You say, seeing a small army of White Fang members running along the top of the train in your direction.
"Well I didn't expect them to go..." Oobleck stops speaking as the bomb starts to beep and flash. "easy on us." He finishes with a groan. "Time to go."
You and your teammates rush forwards to face off against the White Fang while Blake detaches the caboose. "It decoupled itself!" You hear Blake yell from behind you.
"What?" Oobleck says in confusion as he peers down at her.
"I guess he really doesn't want us on this train." Yang says.
You see the train car explode behind you, causing part of the cavern to cave in.
"That's not good." Oobleck says.
"Uh, neither is this." Ruby says as she and Weiss peer into another car.
"Another bomb?" You ask.
"No, no, no." Oobleck says, running past Ruby and Weiss and onto the next car. "They all have bombs!"
Just then, the rear train car detaches as the bomb primes.
"This doesn't make sense!" Yang shouts.
As much as you agree with Yang, you're more concerned about the ever-increasing White Fang members. Normally you would send another explosion at them or use Rhino Charge's devastating power to easily dispatch them, but you're afraid of aggravating the explosives in the train cars. Instead, you rush past the Doctor prepared to engage the anarchists in hand to hand combat, your teammates following you. Sending a low side kick one of the White Fang's knees, you jump and spin in the air, throwing a spinning heel kick to his forehead, rendering him unconscious. As he drops, five more enemies surround you. Dropping onto one knee, you throw a sweep kick, tripping one of them. As they fall, you rise to your feet and throw another side kick, connecting with his stomach. Ducking under a punch, you come up and head but the aggressor, breaking their nose. Spinning around the remaining three, you line them up and pull back your right arm. Activating your semblance, you punch the front guy in the face, sending him flying backwards and into the other's.
"He's leading Grimm to the city!" You hear Oobleck shout.
Weiss turns around. "What?"
"It's the cars! They detach and explode, creating openings for the Grimm!" Another car detaches. "We have to hurry! You three," He shouts at Weiss, Blake, and Yang, "go below and try to stop those bombs!"
"I'll try to slow it down from the front"! You shout.
Using your semblance, you increase your speed and defensive aura, essentially turning yourself into a train yourself, bowling over any White Fang members that might stand in your way. Pushing off the front of the train, you jump a few hundred meters in front of it. Turning to face the train, you widen your stance and drop your center of gravity, digging your feet into the ground. Damn this is gonna hurt. You think to yourself. As the barreling vehicle gets closer, your raise your hands and prepare for impact.
Just as you thought, the impact feels like, well, a train running you over. Gritting your teeth, you absorb as much of the kinetic energy as possible, a (F/C) glow surrounding the first few cars. Any energy you do absorb you feed back into increasing your strength to slow the train, caught in a never-ending cycle. You can feel your feet digging deep into the earth, tearing apart the ground and destroying the cross sections of the train tracks. You don't know how much of a difference you're making, but you'll be damned if you don't try your hardest.
Ruby's POV:
Leaving professor Oobleck behind, I make my way to the front of the train, eyes widening in horror as I see the dead end fast approaching. Desperately searching for some way to stop the train, I look over the edge to see (F/N) pushing against the front of the engine car, a faint (F/C) glow surrounding his body and the front of the train.
"(F/N)!" I shout to him. "Look out, the train is about to crash." I alert him, pointing to the dead end.
"No!" I barely hear him yell back. "I have to stop it from reaching the city!"
From behind me I hear the rest of my team approaching. Turning around, I run to meet them halfway. "Any luck with the controls?" I ask them, hoping they have some good news.
"They sealed the doors shut." Blake responds. "We couldn't get in, no matter how hard we tried."
"Where's (F/N)?" Yang asks in a slight panic.
"He's in front of the train." I tell her.
"What?" She shouts. Running to the front of the car, she peers over the edge. "(F/N)! What are you doing?"
"I have to stop this thing!" He screams over the sound of the train.
"Are you insane?!" Yang asks. "You're gonna get yourself killed!"
Looking up, we all see the dead end getting closer. Hearing (F/N) yell, the train cars start to glow a brighter (F/C) as the train gives a mighty jerk, causing us to stumble forwards a bit. The train's slowing down.
"What's happening?" Weiss asks.
"It's (F/N)." I tell her. "I think he's slowing the train down."
Weiss and Blake's eyes widen in shock, clearly impressed at this feat. I am too, to be honest. (F/N) must be incredibly strong to be able to slow this thing down. Still, the dead end quickly approaches.
"I don't think he can stop it in time!" Blake says.
"Yang!" I shout towards my sister. "Yang, we need to get off before we hit the dead end!"
Yang however, doesn't listen, as she continue to plead with (F/N).
"Please (F/N)! You can't stop this thing!" She yells.
"Yes! I can!" He tells her.
"No, you can't!" She shouts back.
"Well then I can at least slow it down!"
"Please! You're gonna get yourself killed!"
Weiss looks over at me in concern and I nod. Stabbing Myrtenaster into the ground, a large shell of ice forms around us, including Yang, shielding us from the impact. Although upset at being separated from (F/N), Yang doesn't have much time to argue as we soon feel the impact of the train against the wall.
