Chapter III: Welcome to Beacon

Author's Note: Grandmaster Wu Kong and Sun Wu Kong are in no way related. It is completely coincidental and something I didn't even notice when creating her character.

4 months later:

You are on board a massive bullhead flying over the Kingdom of Vale. The other passengers talk loudly amongst themselves, excited and anxious to arrive at their destination. News reporters on large holographic screen offer information about a group of extremists known as the White Fang. You however, tune all the noise out and stare out the windows at the scenery below, lost in deep thought. After that fateful night four months ago, you left the Sun Zhang temple. The loss of Grandmaster Kun was too much for you to face, knowing the blame rested on your shoulders. You fled the mountains with only your robes and Rhino's Charge and returned to the Kingdom where you lived in the forests on the outskirts of the city. Training rigorously during the day, you would spend many sleepless nights wandering the city streets. Often you would come across small crimes being committed under the cover of darkness and put a stop to them.

Only a few weeks ago you returned to your camp in the forest only to find a grey haired, bespectacled stranger patiently awaiting your return. He told you his name was Professor Ozpin, and that your nighttime vigilantism had attracted the attention of both the city news, and his own eye. "Why do you live out here, cut off from society?" He asked you in his calm, calculated tone.

"I do not belong within the city." You respond. "I was raised in the mountains by monks, until my actions were the cause of my master's death. I could not stay, so I left. I have no place left where I belong."

"I see." Ozpin said, carefully observing you through his lenses. "Yet despite lacking any sense of belonging you still wander the city at night and help those in need. Why bother? You said yourself that you do not belong with them, so why help?"

It took you a while to come up with a response, but after a few moments silence you say back, "Because if I fight only for myself, my actions have no purpose. I have the ability to help those in need, so I must."

"Well, I can certainly appreciate such values." He says. "Tell me Mr. (L/N), how would you feel if I could offer you a sense of belonging?"

"What are you suggesting?" You ask, your curiosity peaked.

"I am offering you a place at Beacon. A place where you would be surrounded by other likeminded individuals."

You sit there in silence, staring into the flickering flames of the slowly extinguishing fire. After much thought and careful consideration, you ask a single question. "Why?"

"Why?" He repeats. "Because the world needs more people like you, who are willing to act first, and put others before themselves."

"Oh, Yang, gross! You have puke on your shoes!" Your attention is brought back to the present by shouts coming from a small red-haired figure to your right. "Get away, oh, get away from me! Get away from me! Get away from me!"

The bullhead begins its descent towards Beacon Academy. Trying to block out the sounds of the two girls you look back out the window to appreciate the view. The school is massive, its many buildings all meeting at a courtyard at the center of the maze. The many rivers surrounding the campus all feed into a number of waterfalls that lead to the same vast lake. The bullhead lands at the edge of the cliff, letting its passengers off in the main courtyard. While the crowd fights to get off first, eager to see Beacon up close, you are in no such hurry, and instead take a seat, waiting until everyone else has left, which takes quite some time. By the time you step foot off the bullhead, you witness the same red-haired girl being shouted at by a pale, white haired figure with a scar running down her left eye. Ignoring the scene, you give the two a large berth and head towards the entrance of the main building. Noticing the large amount of people gathered inside, you take a hard right and follow a side path which circles the tower, hoping to avoid crowds for as long as possible.

Walking at a leisurely pace, you stop periodically to listen to the fountains and appreciate the local flora. While observing a small patch of flowers, you hear voices coming from the distance. Looking up you once again see the small redhead talking to a tall, rather scrawny looking blonde. From what you hear of the conversation, the two are discussing weapons, and sure enough the girl in the red hood pulls out a large scythe to show to the blonde. "It's also a customizable, high impact, sniper rifle." You hear the girl say. You roll your eyes internally. You never understood the need for people to add guns to their weapons. Guns were loud and clumsy, you were trained to be precise, striking without wasted motion. That is why you smile when you see the blonde pull out a simple double-edged sword and shield, not as flashy or clumsy.

"Hey, where are we going?" You hear the red-haired girl say.

"Oh, I don't know." The tall blonde says. "I was following you."

Despite your reluctance to socialize, it is nearly time for the ceremony to start, and if these two were lost, you decide you can at least help them find their way. "Hello." You say, approaching the two. "Are you lost little sister?" You ask the young girl.

She looks to her left and right before pointing at herself. "Me?" She asks. "I think you have me confused for someone else. I'm not your sister."

You nod before clarifying. "Ah, yes, my apologies. Where I was raised, everyone was my brother or sister."

"Okay." She says slowly, still looking a little confused. "Well, my name's Ruby. Ruby Rose. And this is Jaune Arc."

"Ruby Rose." You repeat. "Perhaps little flower is a more appropriate name. It is a pleasure to meet you Ruby. And you Jaune. My name is (F/N) (L/N). I couldn't help but overhear that you two may be a little lost. Would you like some assistance finding your way?"

"Uh, yeah. That'd be great." Jaune says.

"So, uh, (F/N), where are you from?" Ruby asks as you begin leading them to the ceremony.

"I was raised at the Sun Zhang Monastery." You respond.

"The what?"

"It is a temple, high in the mountains outside of Vale."

"And you have a lot of family there?" Jaune asks.

"In a sense yes." You say. Seeing their confused faces, you elaborate. "The other disciples of Sun Zhang were my family. My brothers and sisters in training."

"So, you're a monk?" Ruby asks somewhat timidly.

"I suppose that is one word for it."

"I've never even met a monk before." Ruby says excitedly. "Are any of your, uh, brothers or sisters going to Beacon too?"

"No." You say simply. "Disciples of Sun Zhang do not usually stray from the monastery."

"Then what are you doing here? Why'd you lea- "

"Here we are." You interrupt, leading them through the front doors and into the gathering of people. You turn to face them, "It was a pleasure meeting you two. I'm sure our paths will cross again." With that you leave the two and stand in a secluded spot towards the back of the room.

Later that night:

The new students have all gathered in the main hall. Sleeping bags are spread all over the floor and people are spending the time until lights out acquainting themselves with new people. You however, have chosen to settle yourself in a corner, the only person next to you a black-haired girl with a bow in her hair by the name of Blake, reading a book. You're avoiding people not because you are antisocial or have issue with anyone's behavior, rather you hope to avoid discussing your past. Ozpin said the students around you shared your moral compass, however you would be surprised if any shared your background. Besides, you're not entirely sure who amongst the crowd you'd like to associate yourself. Laying your bamboo roll on the floor, you sit with your legs crossed, closing your eyes to meditate before retiring for the evening. Several minutes later you are interrupted by a familiar voice.

"Hi (F/N)!" You open your eyes and look up to see Ruby smiling at you, accompanied by a slightly older blonde girl. "Oh, were you asleep? Sorry."

"It's quite alright." Smiling as you get back to your feet. "It's good to see you again little flower."

You notice the blonde next to Ruby struggling not to laugh. "Little flower?" She laughs. "Hey Rubes, who's your new boyfriend?"

"Shut up Yang!" Ruby blushes.

"Relax sis, I'm just teasing." She says, punching her sister's arm. "Besides, there's no way you'd snag a guy that good looking." Yang says, looking at you and winking.

You're slightly taken aback by Yang's actions, but instead of showing it, you decide to match Yang's flirtatious manner. "No need to be jealous. I'd be happy to call you by a special name too. How about my sunny little dragon?"

Yang's silent for a moment before she begins laughing again. "I like him." She says to Ruby. "My name's Yang, Ruby's older sister."

"(F/N)." You reply, shaking her extended hand. The three of you continue you talk, and you learn a little about Ruby and Yang. They both went to Signal Academy, though they grew up on the Island of Patch. You tell them a bit of how you were raised at the San Zhang temple, though thankfully you avoid the topic of your departure. Ruby is in the middle of obsessing over Rhino's Charge when Professor Goodwitch walks in and announces it's time for lights out.
