Chapter IV: The Prodigal Son

Deciding it was far past time the two of you returned, you pack away the camp and leave it in the woods, you'll come back for it later. Hand in hand, the two of you make your way back to Yang's house. Slowly opening the front door and sneaking into the dark house, you're surprised when a lamp turns on and Taiyang sits looking at the two of you expectantly.

"And what type of hour do you call this?" He asks sternly.

"Sorry dad." Yang apologizes. "We just lost track of time."

"Uh huh." He says in disbelief. "Well, better late than never. Just give me some heads-up next time, okay?"

"Sure thing." She nods. "Come on (F/N), let's go to bed."

Yang leads you by the hand up the stairs and into her bedroom where the two of you instantly collapse into her bed, not even bothering to remove your clothes.

You're awoken early next morning by Ruby running into Yang's room, jumping onto her sister, and unknowingly, you. Feeling a second body, Ruby quickly hops off the bed. "Oh gross!" She shouts. "Gah, cover up. Haven't you two scarred me enough?"

"Little flower, relax." You yawn, stretching out your muscles. "The only thing that happened in this room was sleeping."

Double taking over her shoulder, she realizes you and Yang are fully clothed. "Oh, good. Hurry up and get out of bed. They'll be here any minute." With that, Ruby disappears in a swirl of rose petals.

"What was that about?" Yang asks, finally lifting her head from her pillow.

"I'm not sure." You say, laying back down and pulling Yang into your arms. "Probably nothing to worry about."

Ignoring the knock on the door downstairs, you kiss Yang on the forehead, resting your chin on the top of her head, and allow the warmth of her body to carry you back to the welcoming arms of sleep. It doesn't last long however, as you're soon awoken by a familiar voice.

"Wakey wakey!" The voice pierces through the silence. "It's go time!"

Still wiping the sleep from your eyes, you're caught off guard as Nora Valkyrie throws back the covers and grabs you by the arm, not just pulling you, but swinging your entire body around , quite literally throwing you out the door. Getting to your feet, shaking your head in a state of confusion, you listen as Nora turns her attentions to Yang.

"Nora?" Yang asks sleepily. "What are you doing in my bedro..."

Yang's words quickly turn into a scream as Nora also throws Yang out the door. Fortunately, you're there to catch her before she hits the wall. The force of the impact however, knocks you on your ass.

"My hero." Yang jokes, wrapping her arms around your neck.

Chuckling, you pick Yang up bridal style and carry her through the hallway and down the stairs. Waiting for you in the living room are Ruby, Weiss, Blake, Jaune, Pyrrha, and Ren.

"Finally, we've been waiting for you two forever!" Ruby whines.

"What are you guys doing here?" Yang asks as you set her to her feet.

"Ruby suggested that we all hang out today." Pyrrha explains. "I thought it sounded like a fine idea."

"Sorry about Nora." Ren stands and shakes your hand. "We did try our best to prevent her from waking you two. But once Nora starts there's really no stopping her."

"Nothing to worry about." You say, then turning to Jaune. "Hey man, how are you doing?"

"No complaints." He says as the two of you hug, clapping each other on the back. "Glad to get away from my sisters at any rate."

"Weiss, I thought you were in Atlas over break." Yang says to her teammate, currently sitting cross legged on one of the couch arms.

"Well, I was." She responds. "But my father had some important business in Vale and allowed me to accompany him."

"Nora!" Ren calls up the stairs.

"Coming Ren." You hear her call from upstairs. The sound of running footsteps are heard overhead, followed by Nora leaping over the railing and onto the first floor.

"What were you doing up there?" Blake asks.

"Yang's bed looked really bouncy." She says innocently. "And it was."

Yang groans while everyone else laughs. Saying goodbye to Tai, the nine of you took a quick ship to the mainland and headed towards the Kingdom. As Ruby had said, there was no plan, so you were just strolling around Vale enjoying the day. Passing by an arcade, Ruby and Nora insisted you all enter. Walking inside, you were somewhat overwhelmed by the loud noises and flashing lights. Blinking to allow yourself to adjust to the sudden burst of colors, you shook your head and followed everyone inside. Nora ran off deep within the maze of games, dragging Ren by the collar. Ruby's eyes sparkled when she found a game where you develop a weapon and take it into combat, it was clear she would be there for a while. Blake and Weiss didn't find the arcade quite as entertaining as the others and instead simply followed the group around the place, Weiss with her arms crossed and foot tapping impatiently.

"Hey guys, check this out!" Jaune shouts pointing to a high ropes course. "What do you think? Wanna try it out?"

"I think that sounds like fun." Pyrrha says.

Yang punches her hand and cracks her knuckles, ready to tackle the challenge. You simply shrug and move with your friends over to the entrance. Jaune enters first. The three of you watch as he slowly makes his way across the balance ladders and monkey bars. Taking a zip line across, he doesn't manage to stick the landing and instead plows headfirst into one of the support beams, sliding down. Pyrrha enters next and, predictably, manages to navigate the course flawlessly. Yang enters next, eager to beat Pyrrha's time, but comes up short by about ten seconds. You find the course to be child's play, your life training having prepared you for far worse. You zoom through the entire course in under thirty seconds.

"I thought this was an arcade." You say, pointing to a punching bag sitting off in the corner.

"Oh, perfect!" Yang shouts, dragging you by the hand.

"What is this?" You ask.

"It's a strength test." Yang explains. "You hit it and it tells you how strong you are."

You examine the machine and scratch your head. "How do they measure your strength?"

"Pfft, I don't know." Yang shrugs. Pressing a button causing the bag to drop, Yang pulls back her arm and punches it with all the force she can muster. Red numbers flash across the meter, climbing higher and higher: 8977. According to the label this puts her at 'Boxer'. "Alright," She cheers. Walking behind you, she pushes you on the shoulders. "Your turn."

Turning your head, you see Yang smiling at you. Grinning back, you turn your attention to the bag which has already dropped a second time. Pulling back your right arm, you give it a good solid punch: 8851, 'Martial Artist'. Yang peers around your frame to look at your score.

"I win!" She teases. "Now you have to do whatever I say for a week."

"I never agreed to these terms." You laugh. Yang gives you a sad puppy dog look, staring at you with big eyes and an upturned lip. "But for you I'll do anything." You say. Yang grins and hugs you around the middle, resting her face on your shoulder. You stroke her hair and kiss her forehead.

"Great, now first thing's first. I've always wanted one of those giant stuffed Ursai."

While your time in the arcade was fun, it was cut short when an aggravated shopkeeper threw you out after Nora broke the Whack-A-Grimm machine with her hammer. Getting back on your feet and dusting yourselves off, the nine of you make your way through the streets and for some food. You've just ordered your meal, (Favorite Food) with a side of (Appetizer) when your table is approached by a young couple. Given their height and appearance, you'd estimate that they're just a few years older than you.

"Can we help you?" Ruby asks uncomfortably.

"Yes, sorry to intrude." The male speaks. His hair is a platinum blonde and he's dressed in a fine navy-blue pinstriped suit. "My sister and I were hoping that you'd be able to help us." He indicates the woman on his right who's standing in an elegant black dress with matching heels.

"Wait, Solomon? Anastasia? What are you two doing here?" Weiss asks, causing everyone to stare at her.

"Oh, hello Weiss." Anastasia says. "We didn't notice you. It's strange to see you outside of a more formal setting."

"I'll say." Weiss agrees. "Why are you two here? Did my father need me?"

"Actually," Solomon says, "we're looking for a (F/N) (L/N). I take it that's you." He says when your friends all look at you.

"Uh, yes, yes that's me." You confirm. "Who are you?"

"Oh, (F/N)," Weiss speaks up, "this is Solomon and Anastasia Amadeus. My father is business partners with they're father, Chandler. In fact, that's who he's meeting with right now."

Your jaw grows rigid and your shoulders stiffen at the mention of the name, a change that does not go unnoticed by your friends.

"(F/N)?" Yang asks carefully, placing a hand on your arm. "(F/N), what's wrong?"

"Nothing." You clear your throat. "Nothing. Everything's fine."

"So why are you two looking for (F/N)?" Weiss asks while Yang continues to ask you what the problem is.

"Well, I suppose the simplest answer would be because he's our brother." Solomon says.

"What?!" The table asks in shock. Everyone looks at you, then at the brother and sister, then back to you.

"Well, half-brother." Anastasia corrects. "We've been looking for (F/N) here for quite some time." She smiles and places a hand on your shoulder.

"Excuse me." You say to the table, standing up. "Can we take this somewhere else?" You hiss in your siblings' ears. Stepping out onto the crowded sidewalk, you lean against the side of the restaurant wall. "Look, I don't know who you two are, but..."

"We already told you, we're your brother and sister."

"That doesn't mean I know you. I've never met you two in my life. The only time I've met Chandler was over ten years ago. So why is it that you've come looking for me after all this time?"

"(F/N)," Anastasia says quietly, "our father..."

"Your father." You interrupt. "As far as I'm concerned that man and I have no relation."

"It doesn't matter how you feel." Solomon says. "The fact is our father is dying. He's been hiding it from outside the family, but the doctors say he's only got a few weeks. He wants to see you before he passes."

"I'm sorry for your loss." You say, pushing yourself off the wall and upright. "But that's the problem, it's your loss. It's too late for Chandler to have a place in my life. Almost twenty years too late. Now if you'll excuse me..."

You turn to leave but are stopped when you feel Anastasia's hand on your shoulder. You turn and notice that there are tears forming in her eyes. "Please (F/N). I know he wasn't there for you, but he is your father. That has to count for something, right?"

Letting your head fall, you release a sigh. "Fine. Just, just give me a minute." Walking back into the restaurant, you apologize to your friends and place enough Lien on the table to pay for yours and Yang's meal. Grabbing the back of her chair, you bend down and kiss Yang on the cheek.

"Where are you going?" She asks.

"Don't worry. I'll be back soon." You assure her. "I just have some family business that needs to be taken care of."

You bid farewell to your friends for the time being and walk back out. After you've left, Yang looks around at the table for a minute before rushing out the door after you.

"Wait up!" She calls after your departing figures.

"Yang?" You stop and turn. "Yang, what are you doing. Go back and enjoy spending time with your friends. I told you, I'll only be a short while, it's just family..."

"Family business, I know." She says. "But," she looks you in the eyes, "I'm coming with you. You once said that I was your family now. So, if it's family business, that means me, right?"

A small smile encroaches on your face. "Of course." You answer, causing her to smile.

The four of you spend an awkward fifteen minute car ride across town. As the car stops and you get out of the car, you stare up at a sight you hadn't seen since you were a child. When you were younger this mansion looked enormous and extravagant and slightly intimidating, a representation of everything one could ever want. It was a symbol of wealth and status and power, but looking at it now, it all looked so fake. You now knew that all the money and power in the world couldn't afford happiness.

Solomon and Anastasia lead you inside the house and through several grand hallways, stopping outside a polished oak door. Ushering for you to enter, you push open the door and you and Yang step inside. You're greeted with the sight of two men sitting at a marble desk. One had white hair and a matching mustache, dressed in a crisp white suit. His blue eyes staring upon you with a judging expression. The second man had peppered hair, lines etched along his somewhat pale face. He smiled when he saw who it was.

"(F/N)." He smiles. "I'm glad you came."
