Chapter I: First Impressions
Reader's POV:
It had only been a few days since the breach. A lot had happened that day. You had made an unexpected return to Sun Zhang, investigated Mountain Glenn, and fought off a large Grimm invasion. Still, all those things paled in comparison to what happened afterwards. Having successfully defended Vale from an onslaught of Grimm, you and the rest of Team RWBY had lied down for a well-deserved rest. It was during this rest, while you held your girlfriend, Yang, close to your chest, that the most horrifying event occurred. Yang told you she wanted to introduce you to her father. You managed to get a solid zero hours of sleep after she told you this and had spent the days leading up to spring break in a state of panicked anxiety.
You had heard very little about Yang and Ruby's father and therefore weren't entirely sure as to what to expect. Both Yang and Ruby had assured you that you would be fine, but you couldn't help but panic. You wanted to get along with Yang's father, but you knew that his first impression of you would be what shaped the relationship the two of you would have. You figured that the best thing you could do was to show Mr. Xiao Long that you were serious about his daughter. That you loved her in a way you had never loved anyone before, and that she meant everything to you. You should probably refrain from telling him that the two of you had slept together, that would probably result in your early grave.
Still, you knew how important is was to Yang that you and her father get along, and so you had agreed to meet him. The plan was for you to stay with them during the two weeks off school, but you had still set up a camp in some nearby woods just as a precautionary measure. And so, it was that on the second day of break, mid-afternoon, you were standing outside of the Xiao Long residence on the island of Patch. Knocking three times on the door you stood back and nervously awaited the answer of Taiyang Xiao Long. After what felt like an eternity but at the same time no time at all, the door was opened.
Standing in the threshold was a sandy haired man of muscular build. He appeared to be in his early to mid-forties. His chin was roughly shaven, and you could see in his eyes that he was a good-natured man. At the present however, his blue eyes were narrowed as he gave you a hard look, arms crossed over his chest.
"Mr. Xiao Long." You bow respectfully. "My name is (F/N) (L/N). It is a pleasure to meet y..."
"Yeah, yeah." He interrupts. "I know exactly who you are. Yang's told me plenty."
"I see." You say, doing your best to hide the nervous tone in your voice. "Well, I do hope my arrival is not a surprise to you. You see, your daughter and I had discussed my visiting today, and she had said she would mention it to you." You wait for a response, but he says nothing, continuing to glare at you. "If my presence was not expected I can return at a later date." You say, voice getting quieter under his threatening gaze. "Or never. Never works too."
"Dad!" You hear Yang shout from inside. "Stop joking around and let him in!"
Looking up you realize Mr. Xiao Long is struggling to contain a laugh. Sighing in relief as he finally beings laughing, he leads you inside. Yang walks down a flight of stairs to the right of the entrance and punches her still laughing father in the arm. Turning to you, she approaches and wraps her arms around you, surprising you with a deep kiss, causing her father's laughter to cease.
"Dad, this is (F/N)." Yang says, hanging onto your arm. "(F/N), this is my dad, Taiyang."
"Call me Tai." He says, extending a hand which you shake. "Quite a grip you got there (F/N). That's good. A man needs a firm handshake." Turning his back on you, Tai begins to lead you into another room which turns out to be the kitchen. "We were just getting ready for dinner, why don't you join us?" He says.
Grabbing a pile of plates from a cabinet and four sets of silverware, he hands them to you. "We're just outside." He tells you, indicating a back door leading out of the kitchen. "Yang'll show you. Ruby's already out there."
Arms laden with dishes, Yang leads you out the back door and off in the distance you see a picnic table, Ruby playing with Zwei close by. Approaching the table, Ruby notices you just as you set the dishes down on the table.
"(F/N)!" She shouts, tackling you into a big hug. Losing you balance, the two of you topple to the ground where Zwei starts licking your face.
"Good to see you too, little flower." You say, rising to your feet and brushing off your robes.
"Geez Rubes," Yang laughs, "it's only been two days."
"Pfft." Ruby scoffs. "Don't act like you didn't miss him more than me."
A few minutes later and the four of you are sitting around the picnic table, enjoying lunch and engaging in light conversation. Well, more like heavy interrogation.
"So, (F/N)," Tai asks, "where are you from?"
"I was raised at the Sun Zhang monastery." You respond. "It is a temple high in the mountains which surround Vale."
"Oh right," Tai says, taking a bite of his sandwich, "I've heard about that place." Then turning to his daughters he says, "I think you're Uncle Qrow found himself getting his ass handed to him by a couple of the local monks a few years back." Yang and Ruby snort into their drinks. "So then (F/N), you're a monk too?"
"I suppose that is one word for it." You say.
"So, you're celibate?"
Yang chokes on her food and gives her dad a threatening look.
"Umm, not necessarily, no sir."
"What's that supposed to mean?" He asks, voice gaining a stern edge.
"I am no longer a disciple of the temple." You tell him. "I left about six months ago."
"Well then, why'd you leave?"
"Dad!" Yang says warningly.
"It's alright Yang." You tell her, holding up a hand. "As a disciple of Sun Zhang, I was tasked with defending its walls, as well as my brothers and sisters. Simply put, I failed. I lost someone close to me and I could not stay. So, I left."
"I'm uh, I'm sorry for your loss." Tai coughs.
You simply nod as a gesture of your appreciation.
"So, if you left," Tai asks, "why do you still wear the robes? I mean, the last two guys Yang dated dressed up in suits when they first met me. Why not you?"
"Because, despite leaving the temple, this is still who I am." You answer. "Fancy suits and fine clothing don't represent who I am. Pretending otherwise would only serve an attempt to deceive, and thus insult you."
Tai nods his head in approval before moving on to his next question. "So, why exactly have you taken a liking to my daughter? What are your intentions with her?"
"Dad!" Yang groans again.
"What?" He complains. "He comes sniffin' around my baby girl, I have a right to know his intentions are pure."
"It's quite alright sir." You say. "Why Yang, you ask? Simple. Because she is the most incredible person I have ever met. She's beautiful, strong, brave, funny, and most importantly caring. Emotions were not tolerated at Sun Zhang, friendships and romances forbidden. So, when I first came to Beacon I isolated myself from everyone. If not for you daughter, I would still be a cold and empty shell. If not for her I would never have known the warmth of friendship. Simply put, she is the sun that chased away the dark clouds. And as for my intentions with her. I intend to protect her, and to bring her the happiness that she has brought me. And every day I will strive to be worthy of the love she has blessed me with."
Tai simply nods at your explanation. He seems to be satisfied with your answer as he doesn't ask any more questions. After dinner is finished Ruby resumes her playing with Zwei, watched lazily by the three of you, Yang resting her head on your shoulder.
"Hey (F/N)," Tai says, getting to his feet, "mind helping me with the dishes?"
"Of course." You say, also standing.
"Yang, honey, could you stay out here and keep an eye on your sister?"
"Dad..." Yang starts in a warning tone.
"It's fine Yang." You say, kissing her forehead. "Don't worry about me. Enjoy some time with your sister."
Grabbing the dishes off the wooden picnic table, you follow Tai back into the house. Once in the kitchen, you set the dirty plates, cups, and silverware on the counter. Tai turns on the hot water and throws you a towel before grabbing the top plate and getting to work.
"I hope you'll forgive me (F/N), but I'd still like to ask you a few questions." He says as he hands you the first clean plate.
"Ask anything you'd like." You say, drying off the plate. "I have nothing to hide from you."
"I believe that." He says, showing you which cabinet stores the plates. "But I'm still concerned for Yang's wellbeing. Part of being a father."
"I understand." You say.
"So, after you leave Beacon, what's the plan?"
"I'm not sure what you mean."
"Well," he elaborates, "Yang wanted to become a huntress so she could travel, see the world and get lost in exciting adventures. She wouldn't have time for a family. Are you okay with that?"
"Yang is my family now." You tell him after a short pause. "She's the only thing I need to be happy. If she wanted to march into hell I would follow without hesitation."
"I see." He says. "And you wouldn't try to stop her?"
"Stop her from what?"
"Marching straight into hell." He explains, handing you another plate. "You'd follow her into the most dangerous situations with no thought about the outcome?"
"I don't think you give your daughter enough credit." You say. "She may be adventurous, reckless even, but she's not stupid."
"But if the two of you did find yourself in trouble, you'd protect her?"
"With my life."
Putting away the last of the dishes, Tai turn off the tap and dries his hands on a towel. "One last question." He says. "Do you think you're good enough for my daughter? Do you think you can make her happy for the rest of her life?"
"I know I'm not good enough for your daughter. I doubt anyone is. But I will do my best to be worthy of her, and to make her happy for all her days."
"Good man." He says, clapping you on the shoulder. "Well, thanks for putting up with my interrogation. I'm sure it must have been a little uncomfortable to say the least."
"It's fine." You say. "I understand your position. You want to make sure your daughter's boyfriend has only her best interests at heart. And trust me, so do I."
"Well (F/N), I think you and I are gonna get along just fine." He says as the two of you approach Yang and Ruby. "Better than the others. I nearly tossed her last boyfriend off a cliff."
