part eight

I never should have agreed to this. But in all honesty I hadn't actually expected him to sound as good as he did. Mel gave me a shrug of his shoulders and a light smile as I glanced his way. And it was in that moment I knew I was in for it.

"Well?" Michael looked up from his position across from me on the couch.

My eyebrows knitted together and I couldn't help myself as I pursed my lips and looked away from him and out the storefront windows. "Not bad, I guess."

"You guess?" He let out a laugh as a grin formed in his face; he knew he was good, but I'd never give him the satisfaction of knowing I agreed.

The metal chair creaked underneath me as I shifted slightly so I was able to see him and leaned forward to stare straight into his eyes. Michael leaned back a little out of nervousness, but held my gaze.

"Are you free tomorrow?" I asked, giving in to our agreement.

"Hell yes!" The tall boy practically jumped out of his seat as he threw his hands up in excitement. "This is going to be so cool! I was thinking, I have this friend who plays bass and-"

My eyelashes fluttered as a weight fell over my shoulders at his words. I didn't know what he expected, but there was no way that I planned on letting anyone else hear these songs. I shouldn't have even been showing him in the first place.

"Michael." My voice was stern as I cut off his banter. "There's no way in hell you'll ever get me to start a band. Much less a band that has you in it."

Michael so easily took my words in stride and shook his head at me. "But now at least I've got you thinking about it."

I rolled my eyes and stood from the uncomfortable chair. My eyes turned to look back out the large glass panes to see rain as it began to descend from the grey sky above.

"It'll pass quick." I looked back at Michael as he spoke, but he was now looking out the widow.

He turned his gaze back to mine and smiled slightly. As loud and annoying as Michael seemed to be, he was obviously a very genuine person at heart. Just knowing that made me want to take a step back from him. I had come to this town to keep a low profile, not up and start a band with a complete stranger who had no filter.

"I'll see you tomorrow," I mumbled as my thoughts took hold of my attention.

My steps were quick as I moved toward the door, feeling like I wanted to run all of a sudden.

"Wait! Are you leaving already?" Michael grabbed my arm to stop me, but quickly removed his hand as he looked down at my distracted expression. "When should I come by yours tomorrow?"

"I get off work at 3..." I paused in thought. "So any time after that, l guess."

He nodded his head immediately, taking mental note of the time, before he took a step back. "See you then!"

I gave a slight wave and a nod to Mel who still stood behind the counter watching us quietly. Then without a word I stepped out into the light drizzle. I crossed the street quickly and began my trek back to my apartment. My chin turned upward toward the sky and it was then that the sun began to break through the clouds. The light rain slowed just as I made it to my building and I quickly fished my keys from my purse and unlocked the main entrance.

I didn't want to give in so easily. I could tell Michael only had good intentions, but these songs were the only things I had left of Noah and I wanted to be selfish. I wanted to keep them all to myself because if people knew who had actually written them they'd never take the time to actually listen to the words. And those words were what were important.

Before for the incident I believed my boyfriend had good intentions as well. But as I have come to realize, I didn't know him the way I thought I had.

With that thought in mind I unlocked my door and stepped into my apartment. If I hadn't seen what was really going on with Noah, then maybe I should be weary about Michael as well.
