Sunny Is Not Getting Up Today

Grace's POV

(Quick AN I forgot to mention: all of the kids are mostly fluent in English, but they all speak their native languages at home! Or if they want to jokingly insult each other.)

"Did they have to choose the hottest day of the school year for Field Day?" Evie whined as she tugged on her shirt. For once, we weren't wearing our school uniforms. That bad news was, the whole school was gathered on the field for Capture the Flag.

Lars and Mia started cackling. They were from pretty hot climates themselves, so this was nothing to them. The rest of us actually had functioning seasons.

Sunny Kobayashi, the athletic one of the group, was laying facedown on the grass, groaning. I gently kicked her in the thigh and said, "Oh Sunny...get up."

"No." Sunny whined.

"Sunny! You love Capture the Flag!" I said. "Are you feeling okay? Usually you would be the first person on the field!" Sunny sat up and stared daggers into my soul. "I don't know about you, but to me, it's brutally hot and I drank all my water two hours ago."

"T-two hours ago? Sunny! Two hours ago we were literally getting breakfast and school hadn't even started yet! It's nine in the morning!" I said.

"Jet lag."

"We've been in America for eight months."

"Still. I'm from Japan. That's a 16 hour time difference, I'M TIRED." Sunny groaned. I rolled my eyes and said, "Lars!"

Lars Sua darted over to me, their hair dripping with sweat. "Can we just start these dumb games already?" he asked.

"Sunny, our varsity athlete, has decided to sit out. I think." I said, pointing to where Sunny was laying on the grass. Mia Fernandez stepped over Sunny and walked towards us.

"I know how to get Sunny riled up and ready for the game." Mia said. She looked around for Evie Shubert, and muttered a "Thank God" to herself when she realized Evie was on the other team. "HEY SUNNY! WE'RE NOT ALL ON THE SAME TEAM!" Mia screamed.

Sunny sat up and almost knocked a freshman down the hill in the process. "What?" she screeched, grabbing a water bottle from a cooler and downing it. She jumped around and started screeching something in Japanese that I couldn't understand, she does that a lot.

"We got the old Sunny back. I can't tell if that's good news or bad news." Lars said.

"Evie's team is full of mostly innocent freshmen who haven't faced Sunny's wrath." Lars said under their breath. It looked to Mia and said, "I think that's bad news."

"Mia, do you mind keeping Sunny sane during the game?" Lars asked. Mia looked at him with confusion and said, "I thought I was in charge of Grace."

"You're in charge of all of us, Mia." I said. Mia groaned and said, "Fine. Offense or defense, blah blah blah sports."

"I guess offense." Lars said, making their way over to the line and almost stepping in goose poop.

"I'm always offense." Sunny said. I laughed at her and said, "These things have more than one person on offense, Sunny!"

"Okay then, jeez!" Sunny said. Mia, the least athletic of the five of us, made her way to defense. Every single time we played something like this in P.E., Mia was always defense so she wouldn't have to do anything. It hasn't won us a lot of games, but still.

"Ready...set..." the coach said.

"CHARGE!" I screamed as soon as the whistle touched the coach's lips. Out of the 20 or so people on our team, me and Sunny were the fastest. Lars rolled his eyes as they chased after me.

"I got it! I got the flag!" I squealed.

"GRACE KHATRI DON'T ANNOUNCE IT!" Sunny said, running over and taking the flag back from me. "THANKS A LOT, GRACE! NOW THE OTHER TEAM IS LITERALLY HUNTING ME DOWN!"

"It's the rules of the game." I said, going back to my home base.

I laughed as I watched my friends play the game, complete with me making unnecessary runs the entire time and annoying Sunny.

Despite the hot day, this was really a lot of fun.
