Grace Can Seriously Rock A Tux
Mia's POV
"Tonight's the school dance!" I said, pinning a really pretty hair clip I found at a secondhand shop in my hair as Evie Schubert was putting on makeup beside me. "By the way, Evie, beautiful dress!"
"Thanks!" Evie said, twirling around and showing her beautiful light blue dress off. I giggled and looked in the mirror at my dress. It was a pale pink and I was wearing silver heels to match. Evie had ditched the heels and had gone for a simpler pair of black ballet flats.
On the bed, Sunny Kobayashi was protesting about having to wear a dress. And believe me, it took us three weeks to convince her that wearing sweatpants to the biggest event of the year wasn't a good idea. And it's probably a good idea to note that Sunny doesn't even own any dresses. So we had to go to the mall and pick out a decent dress for her.
So this is how Sunny was sitting on the bed, arms crossed and groaning in a black off-the-shoulder dress with a pair of Nikes, at her insistence.
Grace Khatri ran in, wearing a tux she had bought a few days earlier. Grace was terrified the people at the tux shop would laugh at her cause she was a girl, but the employees were thrilled to help her out and helped her pick out the perfect tux. And the one she was wearing fit her perfectly, along with the galaxy tie she had picked out off of Amazon.
But Lars Sua's dance attire took the cake. They were wearing a white button down shirt with a rainbow bow tie and a deep purple blazer, a very Heather Chandler-style skirt, her genderfluid socks, and his pansexual colored Converse that didn't match with the rest of their outfit whatsoever, but looked amazing on her.
"Here you go!" Lars squealed, slipping a corsage on Grace's wrist. "A completely platonic croissant."
Grace stammered for a bit before spitting out, "You mean a corsage?"
"Croissants work too." Lars said, throwing their hands in the air in frustration. "Get me a croissant then." Grace whined. I turned to Evie and said, "Evie, get me a platonic croissant."
"No." Evie said, then returned to putting on her mascara.
"What in the world is a platonic croissant?" Sunny asked, confused.
"Don't ask. Anyway, the dance starts in twenty minutes, let's go." Lars said.
___________
"I'm about to trip on my own feet." I said in a sing-song voice. Sunny laughed while getting a bag of Doritos from the snack table and said, "This is why you should've worn sneakers like me."
"Oh please, you look ridiculous, your sneakers are bright blue." Evie said.
"They're my lucky sneakers and the only pair of running shoes I brought to America. Don't mess with fate. Or me. Definitely not me." Sunny said. "If you four weren't my best friends, you would've gotten your elbows eaten a long time ago."
"I'm sorry, our elbows would've been...what?" Lars said.
"Eaten. I would've turned your elbows into macaroni." Sunny said.
"And there goes my appetite. And the last of my brain cells." Grace said. Lars snickered and said, "Bold of you to assume you even had brain cells in the first place."
Grace and Lars started bickering for a few minutes, until the Macerena came on and we all started doing the dance like it was engraved in our brains.
Until Lars tripped and fell flat on his face.
"Is she okay?" I asked while Lars croaked out a small "Help..."
"Eh, they're Lars. He'll be fine." Grace said and Lars screamed, "MA'AM, MY LIP IS BUSTED GET ME A TISSUE PLEASE."
Sunny groaned and got a package of mini tissues out of her purse that we forced her to bring. She handed the package to Lars who said, "Thank you! The one person in this friend group who's actually a decent human!"
"Rude." Grace said under her breath.
Suddenly, slow music started playing and I grabbed Evie's arm. Grace looked around for her own girlfriend, Harley Phan, and took her arm.
"Look." Lars said gently as their boyfriend kissed her cheek. "I can only see two straight couples on the floor."
"It's beautiful." Evie gushed. I smiled and looked at Sunny, alone and pressed up against the wall.
And then a tall girl with dark shoulder length hair walked up to her.
"Hey. You're Sunny, right? From Algebra?" the girl said. "I'm Raina Faatoa."
"That's the Tahitian girl in my math class!" Grace said.
"Um...I've had a crush on you since the beginning of the school year...and I'm super awkward with feelings, so...may I have this dance?" Raina said.
"Say yes! Say yes! Say yes!" Lars cheered. Sunny squealed and said, "Yes!" and Raina took Sunny's hand and spun her around.
"So...are we dating now or something? Cause you're kinda hot." Sunny said. I smiled. I've known that Sunny's had a crush for a while, she just hadn't told us who it was.
"Yes." Raina said, and we all cheered.
"This night is beautiful." Grace said, letting go of Harley for just a millisecond.
"It is. Too bad we're all on a sugar high."
