Recap

Sam becomes shocked and cannot believe that Chris had proposed to her. She rejects it saying that she only considered him as a brother and a good friend and that she still loves Aayush. Saying so, she takes Emily and leaves. Chris gets hear broken and his sister Alice advises and consoles him . He thinks that the friendship between Sam and him would becomes awkward because he proposed to her, but it doesn't. Sam tells him that she trusts him with all her heart, making Chris become happy for having her as a best friend. Few days later, Chris gets a call from Sam in the middle of the night. He attends it and to his astonishment finds that Emily is hospitalized and in danger. He immediately rushes to the hospital.

Chris's POV

I grabbed my coat, my keys and rushed out. It was midnight and there was no one out on the streets I got inside my car and drove off to the hospital. My head was bursting with a million thoughts. What had happened to Emily ? Was she safe ? Will she be alive ? I somehow reached the hospital without running into any lamppost or tree.

I went straight to the emergency ward and found Anita outside, pacing the passage.

"Anita !", I ran to her.

"Chris ! Chris ! Something is wrong ...She was fine the whole day and suddenly..suddenly...", she broke down.

"Anita..it's going to be alright. Believe me. Emily is a strong child. "

"She is a baby Chris. How can she endure all this pain ? They gave her a lot of medicine and she has to take all of them. My poor baby !"

"It's okay . It's okay.", I calmed her down.

After sometime, the doctor came outside.

"Doctor, is she alright ?", Anita rushed to him.

"We can't really say anything now. We have to perform a surgery to remove the tumor . It has increased in size. "

"What ?", she almost screamed.

"There is a fifty percent survival . Her body should be strong enough to cope up.", he sighed.

"Doctor, please save her. I beg you !", Anita cried.

"I can only do my best, Miss Anita. You can visit your daughter after she wakes up.", saying so, he left.

Anita cried for a while and fell asleep .I tried to stay awake, but despite drinking coffee, I dozed off too.

Morning rays of sunshine fell on my face and woke me up. I jerked awake when I remembered where I was.

Damn ! I had fallen asleep instead of taking care of them.

Anita was sitting opposite to me.

"Have this .", she handed me a cup of coffee.

"Am sorry I slept off Anita."

"Not to worry . Aayush has been here since morning .", she smiled.

"Oh. Okay . Wait ! WHAT ?", I shouted.

"Shush Chris ! Aayush has been living in New York for a long time now. He had come to the hospital to buy some medicines when he saw me . I told him everything that has happened and he quickly contacted his oncologist friend to help Emily. He still thinks I am married to Harish and that he is alive. I have told him that my husband , Harish is on a business trip to Europe and won't be back for a week. So please maintain the same Chris, please."

I blinked .

"Anita, all this stress has taken a toll on you. You are just hallucinating ! You thought Aayush lives in New York . It'll be alright.", I comforted her like a dumb idiot thinking that she was imagining unrealistic stuff.

The door opened and a man came out.

He was tall, muscular , with an Indian brown complexion .His features were strikingly handsome. It was indeed Aayush ! I had seen him in pictures , but he wasn't muscular back then. Dude has been working out !

"Sam, you have one hell of a bold daughter !"

Anita blushed slightly.

"You must be Chris ! Sam has told me about you.", he held out his arm.

I nodded and shook his hand.

"I'll get something to eat .", he said and went off.

I turned to Anita and she smiled. The way her face lit up when he came showed that she still loves him.

How lucky he was to have had her as a girlfriend ! I felt jealous of him, But, he was married to someone else , I silently rejoiced.

"Don't forget to call me as Sameera. He doesn't know the "Anita" part ."

I nodded again. How could this happen ?

Just when I thought I would be her moral support, her ex came into our life !

How ? Just how ?

"Anita ?", I cleared my throat .

"You do realize that he is married right ?"

"Chris, do you think am luring him back ? Huh ?", she demanded angrily.

"No Anita. What am trying to say .."

"No Chris ! You are jealous of Aayush. You are afraid that he might interfere in my life and take me away from you !"

"Anita..."

"I never expected this from you !", she said and storm off.

Damn ! I was helpless. I just sat there, not knowing what to do.

Aayush and Anita came back after sometime. She glared at me while giving me a sandwich and coffee.

"Has the doctor said anything ?", Aayush asked me.

I shook my head.

An hour passed by and Aayush's doctor friend arrived.

They discussed for sometime and Anita was asked to complete some formalities. Then, she came to me and said that the operation was about to start and they were to wait near the operation theater.

Anita went inside to speak to Emily before the operation. She came out after a few minutes, looking distraught. She looked as if she would break down any moment.

Aayush held her hand and made her sit . He sat next to her and put his arm around her shoulder, consoling her.

I thought if I should even be there at that moment, but Emily mattered to me and Anita too obviously.

I just didn't understand where was Aayush's wife. She wouldn't have let him come here, if she knew Anita was here.

After what seemed like a few hours, the oncologist, Aayush's friend, came out of the operation theater.

Seeing him, I got up and went towards. He went to Aayush , while Anita looked up and sprung up to ask the Doctor what had happened.

My heart beat rapidly , as tension built in the air. What if ? What if ?

"Miss Anita !", he said.

"How is she ? Is she alright ? Is she safe ?", Anita asked him in one breath.

"Emily is ...safe ", he smiled.

Anita clapped her hands on her mouth and cried. Aayush kept a hand on her shoulder and they hugged each other.

The Doctor smiled at me and waited for them to finish rejoicing.

Aayush gently let her go and spoke to the Doctor.

"Thank you Robert. I don't know how to repay you."

"Ah. Forget it man. Anything for my buddy !", he winked.

"Anyway, Emily has to be examined regularly . She can be discharged in few days time. I have prescribed the necessary medicines for her. You may visit her after she wakes up."

"Thank you Doctor.", Anita told him.

He smiled and Aayush and he went off, talking with him.

Anita then turned to me and smiled.

"Thanks for everything Chris !"

I merely nodded.

After sometime, a nurse said to Anita that Emily was awake and that she could visit her. Only one person was allowed to see her at that time, so Aayush and I remained outside.

"So, how do you know Sameera ?", Aayush asked me.

"We work in the same office .", I said with a neutral expression.

"Hmm...where is her husband , Harish ?"

"Didn't An....Sam tell you that he is away on a business trip ?", I asked him, suspicious.

Why would he ask me when he already knew the answer ?

Wait. What if he knew ?

No ! It can't be !

"I might have forgot . Do you speak to Harish often ?"

"Look Aayush, you can ask these questions to Sam when she comes out . Stop bothering me !"

He stared at me , a cold look it was.

I wonder what he wanted. Instead of being there for his wife, he was with his ex girlfriend !

"Say, where is your wife?"

"She has gone on a holiday , with her friends. ", he replied.

"I see, does she know that you are here ?"

My words seemed to have touched a nerve.

"That ..is none of your business, mister !"

"Likewise, how well I talk to Harish is none of your business !"

He jumped from his seat to come towards me , when Anita appeared.

Sensing her, he stopped.

"Guys, Emily is totally alright. ", she smiled.

"You may go see her "

Thank God she didn't notice the cold war between us.

He gave me a threatening look and went to visit Emily. After he came out, I went inside, to see her lying on the bed, with oxygen tubes and other medical equipment around her.

I told her some jokes, made her laugh and while I was telling her a story , she fell asleep.

Smiling, I kissed her forehead and came out.

I told Anita that I would go home, refresh myself and come back again.

I came out of the hospital and went to the parking lot.

Just as I spotted my car, someone punched me on the face and before I knew, I had blacked out.
