Chapter 1
7 Years Later.
Aaliyah Otiento-Miller's POV.
"Oh... you're leaving already?" He asks.
I shrug on my jacket and reach for my shoes.
"Yeah. Work. Remember?" I ask nonchalantly.
A pair of strong arms pull me back into bed.
"Why don't you ever stay with me for breakfast?" He whines into my ear, before kissing my neck.
I pat his arm gently.
"What, 'friends with benefits' means nothing to you?" I ask him, pulling away and his shoulders sag as he slumps back into bed.
He looks over at a friend of his, who we managed to wear out last night.
What was his name... Cameron? Aaron?
I don't care anymore.
I nearly smirk, buttoning my pants up.
"He was fun." I comment.
He laughs.
"I agree. Don't you think he'd be disappointed to find you gone when he wakes up?" He asks.
I shrug.
When will people learn that I can't be 'peer-pressured'.
"Your friend, your problem. No?" I ask, making sure I have all my things.
I look at my outfit in the mirror.
^^ Aaliyah's Outfit.
He sighs.
"Aaliyah..." he starts.
^^ Aaliyah Otiento-Miller
I walk up to him.
"Anthony" I respond, leaning down to give him a quick peck on the lips.
He holds my jaw.
"Why are you so cold with me?" He asks, looking at me sadly.
I internally roll my eyes at how doe eyed he is.
Because I'm only here to fuck.
"I'll call you" I lie.
"Liar" he dismisses.
"I promise" I lie again, my voice a little softer.
He melts.
I rub my thumb gently across one of the love bites I made recently, and he shivers.
Caught him.
"Bye" I say, grabbing my bag and walking out of the room.
I walk down the stairs and I make my way to my car.
Now that, I'm less stressed, I best make my way to work.
I start up my engine and drive out of the front way, getting onto the road.
Conveniently, Anthony's house is only 15 minutes away from work.
That means after a hookup, I don't need to get stressed and leave too early.
He doesn't need to know that.
I might have to cut him off though.
He's getting clingy.
I'll take him to dinner or something.
Break it to him nicely.
I groan.
But he's so good at it!
Whatever.
Work is the priority.
I pull up to work, and I make my way into the firm's building.
As soon as I walk in and swipe my card, I'm met with my assistant.
^^ Elian Deogene.
6'5, broad shouldered, clear skinned and a menace to society, Elian is one of my best friends.
We met once, after being paired with each other on a case and we were like sand and snow!
He's a massive extrovert and he loves being around other people.
I'd rather live in a remote sea cave than interact for longer than necessary with anyone I'm not close to.
But we worked extremely well together and have been inseparable since then.
Like me, he's 28 years old, but due to the amount of cases I've won, so far, he's offered to become my under study or assistant.
That means that if we both keep good reputations, I can later 'suggest' that his rank should move up.
"Judge" he greets, hading me my coffee and Mikado box.
I smile up at my best friend.
"Assistant judge" I tease.
"Hey don't get cocky, you bastard! You're not even a judge yet!" He complains, poking my arm.
We walk into my office and I sit in my chair, opening the box and taking a king sip of the coffee.
"I'm your superior you know! You shouldn't call me a bastard" I 'pout'.
"And you shouldn't be hooking up with people on a weekday, yet here we are" he retaliates, sifting through the orderly stack of folders in his arm.
"I was stressed out!" I defend.
He scoffs.
"Yeah, whatever" he mumbles, pouting a little himself.
"Ouu, are you jealous?" I ask, teasing him and he glares at me, running his eyes down my seated figure slowly but surely.
He then maintains eye contact.
"If I was jealous, you'd know!" He says.
I roll my eyes, offering him the first Mikado.
He takes it with a smile.
"Fat ass" I scowl.
He grins wider.
"You and Doc are always over feeding me. What am I to do?" He asks 'innocently'.
"The report!" I demand.
He nods and starts to talk, as I type.
My focus becomes laser, as I go into full concentration.
Elian reads out the rest of the report and then I dismiss him to receive the copies.
I sit back in my chair and I sigh, looking out over the skyline through my large glass window.
Just as I do, I get a knock on the door.
"Come in." I say briskly.
The door opens and one of my colleagues, Mia, walks through he door.
I sigh internally.
"Good afternoon Mia" I say curtly.
She smiles back just as politely.
"Good afternoon Aaliyah" she says all chipper.
"Is there something you need?" I ask straight up.
She feigns surprise.
"Need? No! I'm just here to tell you that there will be a social event in the coming weeks, concerning our firm." She says.
I nearly roll my eyes.
Here we go.
"I have an assistant, Mia. I would have heard of it sooner rather than later" I say to her.
She shakes her head.
"I know, I know, but I just wanted to catch you first, so I could discuss something with you!" She insists.
"Alright, with haste please, Mia. We're on a tight schedule." I say.
She starts talking.
"So as I'm sure you'll become aware of, there is a charity ball for people all over the city to attend!" She starts.
"And I'm sure you know that we might be brushing shoulders with some eligible men." She says.
The last part is a small whisper.
"What does that have to do with me?" I ask.
She smiles wider.
"As you know , have two sons..." she says.
I nearly roll my eyes.
"I'm aware" I say.
"I was thinking... maybe you could all become acquainted!" She exclaims.
I hold the bridge of my nose.
"The answer is no" I respond, immediately.
She takes a seat in front of me.
"Come on why not?" She asks.
"Not that it's of massive concern to you, but I'm not interested in dating right now. Work is my priority" I say to her.
Plus, I know that even though her intentions seem pure, this could be a power move.
She doesn't seem particularly malicious.
But it's always the ones who don't seem malicious.
She gives me a doleful sigh.
"Think about it okay? It could be the start of something beautiful" she says, with a wink.
I say and do nothing in response, focusing back on my computer.
She gets up, walking out of my office and I breathe out.
Just as I do, I get a message from one of my mothers.
My step mom, Violet.
I call her and she picks up after the first ring.
"Mamma" I say.
"Hey baby girl. Are you still joining us for dinner today?" She asks.
I look at the time.
"Shit! I'm on my way!" I say, looking for my keys.
She sighs.
"Language. And you haven't left that fuckin' seat, have you?" She asks.
Language, my ass!
I put the phone on loud speaker, looking for my keys and jacket.
Elian waltzes in, holding my jacket out for me to put my arms in.
'Thank you' I sign
Elian is partially deaf.
That means that his hearing is not the best.
But he hates to wear his hearing aids in public.
Once I found out, I learnt to sign, in all the languages that he knows, so that we could communicate.
I knew a bit, prior because one of the twins is deaf.
"Also" My mom says.
I look at my phone.
No.
"Bring Elian. Both of your asses need to step into my office" she finishes, before hanging up.
I groan and Elian grins.
'You're coming with me' I sign.
"I know. I could tell by your expression." He says to me.
I dig my elbow into his ribs.
Bastard.
