People once again started praying to Lord Vishnu because of Lord Pralad. After Pralad, his son Virochan also started preaching about Lord Vishnu such that everyone only started praying to him. Lord Indra (king of the gods and king of the sky) became angry and struck a lightning at Virochan and he died. Virochan's son Lord Bali then swore that he will destroy Lord Indra and with the boon of Lord Brahma in his hand, defeated Lord Indra and started ruling over the heavens and the earth.

Goddess Aditi, the mother of all the gods started to meditate for Lord Vishnu and as soon as he heard her, he came to meet her.

"I understand what you want mother. I will take birth through your womb and do what is right," Lord Vishnu said and blessed mother Aditi.

Goddess Laxmi, wife of Lord Vishnu gets confused and asks him, "How can you kill Bali? He is kind and he never showed his power over the weak. He is the best ruler the earth can have."

Lord Vishnu smiled and said, "O beautiful one, humans are becoming more intelligent. It's time that they look after the earth. Besides, I never said that I will kill Bali. I only said that I will do what is right."

Mother Aditi gave birth to a Brahmin but he grew up in seconds, only that he was shorter than the normal human beings. Aditi's eyes were wide when she looked at his height. He smiled and said, "I will be known as Vamana, the fifth incarnation of Lord Vishnu and don't judge me from my height mother. I will do what is right and this height will help me."

After some days, Bali kept a yadna (kinda a religious ceremony) and had invited all the Brahmins. Vamana went there too and before Bali could water his feet to show his respect, Shukracharya, the teacher of the demons entered the water pot (you can imagine it like a teapot) and obstructed the flow. Lord Vamana understood who it was and took a nearby stick and inserted it in the opening of the pot. It hit Shukracharya's eye and he came out. The water flew without any further disturbance and now it was time to donate.

Bali joined his hands and said to Vamana, "Ask anything that you want. If I can, I will give it to you."

"Can you give me three steps of land?" Vamana asked.

Bali laughed and said, "What will you do with three steps of land, that too with your little feet?"

Lord Vamana smiled and said, "I will not ask for something more than I need."

Bali nodded respectfully. Suddenly, Lord Vamana's size started increasing and his one foot became the size of the earth. He kept the other foot on the heaven and said, "Your land ended with just two steps of mine. Where should I keep my third foot?"

Bali recognised him, came forward with joined hands and said, "Keep it over my head. I will serve you with everything I have."

Lord Vamana got impressed and said, "Go Bali, go and rule the hell. Heaven will be looked after by Lord Indra and earth by the humans. I will create a four fold system known as the caste system which will tell humans their functions in the society.

Lord Bali joined his hands and left immediately and Lord Vamana left his body too.
