20. The Swayamvar

They were finally at the Swayamvar. They all were perfect to participate because if the Princess wanted strength, Bheem could easily win her. If she wanted knowledge, Yudhisthir would be the best. If she wanted her husband to be an archer, of course it will be Arjun. If she wanted beauty, it would be Nakul and if she wanted agility, Sahdev it would be. No matter what she wanted, she could get and that's why Bheem was important to win the Swayamvar. That's why Yudhisthir didn't want to lose him.

Later, they came to know the terms of the Swayamvar. The Prince had to look at the small pond in front of them to the reflection of a fish that will be hung above, rotating and the one who would shoot the fish's eye while looking at the reflection will win.

Duryodhan was happy that he had brought Karna along with him. All the suitors tried but no one could win. When it was Karna's turn, Duryodhan praised him so much that he was overconfident. Arjun was worried because they had studied in the same gurukul and knew how good of an archer he was. In his ego, Karna missed the eye with just a little distance and Arjun sighed in relief. Drupad got worried when he saw that no Prince or king was able enough to marry his daughter. He asked, "Isn't there anyone here who knows how to do this?"

Arjun stood up and volunteered to try. He was disguising himself as a sage and so were the other Pandavas. In the hut, Kunti was getting worried if Duryodhan had recognised her sons. Finally, Arjun came to the centre and hit the fish's eye. Drupad got happy that he finally found his son-in-law who would defeat Dronacharya because only Arjun had defeated Drupad. If he wanted his half of the kingdom back, he needed an archer to help him and this son-in-law seemed to be perfect for this. That's why this was the condition of the Swayamvar. Drupad announced about their wedding.

However, the suitors that gathered there started to quarrel with Drupad because how can a princess live in a forest as a Brahmin? It will be too uncomfortable for her. So, when the swords were finally out, Arjun and Bheem had to stay back and fight the other suitors while the others went back with Draupadi to the hut.

The next day, Drupad and the Pandavas meet to decide what to do and what will be the conditions of the marriage. It is then decided that Yudhisthir will marry her and Drupad has to support him to get Hastinapur. Drupad agreed with the thought that they will help him if Dronacharya and he fight again.

Now, time for stories. Draupadi was a very strong character of the Mahabharat. So, people have tried their best to take away her respect with many stories. One such story is that she fell in love with Karna when she saw him for the first time. This story will continue when they will be in exile. So, a respected woman is someone who loves only her husband but apparently, she loved Karna. So, this was one thing that they added after the second translation of the Mahabharat and was not there originally.

Let's move on to the next story. When the five brothers and Draupadi entered, Kunti didn't see her and told everyone to share whatever they had brought among themselves. Now, many things to consider here. Why did they need to take her so seriously? She was just an old woman. Why ruin their lives for an old life? Besides, she clearly meant food when she told them to share Draupadi. So, shouldn't they eat her instead of sharing her equally among themselves? Besides, why only five of them equally? If you remember clearly, there used to be seven equal divisions for each of them and one extra for Bheem. So, how is this possible? Where is Kunti's share? So, this story is also perfectly fake but still quite entertaining. Besides, think of it. How will Krishna allow this to happen? How will Yudhisthir, the knower of the scriptures allow this to happen? Didn't Kunti know that they had gone to a Swayamvar? Didn't the remaining three brothers tell her before Bheem and Arjun came? Think about it yourself. This story has become so common because of our Mahabharat serials but when you read the Mahabharat, you will know that it's completely fake.

Then, to support this, you need more stories. I have heard one story with many variations. I have not confirmed which one of them is in the Mahabharat today but I will tell you guys all about it. So, in her past life, she was unmarried. She performed austerities to Shiva. Why Shiva? Because he is considered as the perfect man. So, unmarried women pray to him to get perfect husbands like him. When he arrived and asked her what she wanted, she got frightened a bit and said husband for five times. So, he blessed her with five husbands in her next life. Now, thing worth mentioning here is that who stutters a whole word for five times? Husband-husband-husband-husband-husband? Or would it be h-husband? Think for this yourself. How many times do you stutter? Do you stutter the whole word?

Now, the next story is, that she asked for a husband who was knower of the scriptures, strong, good archer, beautiful and agile. That's why she got five husbands. Now, I would like to applaud for those who made this story. Where did good archer and agile come from? They don't suit the other qualities. Besides, she should have better asked for a person with 32 perfect qualities rather than 5. She could have even got Krishna but of course she couldn't because his wife can only be Goddess Laxmi, the Goddess of wealth and prosperity, meaning Rukmini Devi and no else. What happened to other 16107? I will tell when the time will be right.

Another story is that Shiva knew that she won't be able to manage with five husbands. So, he made an arrangement such that she will become a virgin every time she will bath. What is he? A permanent hymen? Couldn't he just marry her off to a husband with these qualities or could have understood that she wanted just one husband and not five? A person can have thirty six perfect qualities. Ram was that person. Krishna had 64 perfect qualities. Couldn't Shiva find one with five?

Anyways, so let's move on with the five husbands part. It was then decided that she will spend one year with one of her husbands and if any other brother entered her room at that time, that brother will have to go for an exile of twelve years, missing his chance. Now, this doesn't sound true too because she had only married Yudhisthir and every other brother used to call her Bhabhi and not dharmpatni. So, done for now. There are other stories related to this story of twelve years. I will tell those in the next chapter just because they are fun and the reason why they are fake.
