1. Why was Mahabharata necessary
Kalyug was going to come and every God was worried about the human race because kalyug will mean that people will forget about their real religion. This will be the age when girls will be married without their consent, women will be raped and taken advantage of, cheating on their partners will be a common thing and the life expectancy of people will fall down to the average of twenty years.
Well, so an example was necessary to guide people to the right path. Some evidences are necessary that God does exist. So, it was then decided that every God will give a part of their being and these humans which will have parts of the gods will leave a permanent imprint on the earth.
The story starts from a meeting in Brahma loka, the Brahma world. Five gods were discussing something with Lord Brahma but suddenly, vayu Dev, the God of air came there and the cloth covering Ganga's body slips off. The four of the gods immediately averted their eyes but the fifth God was still looking at her exposed chest.
Goddess Ganga also blushed under his gaze and Lord Brahma cursed him for disrespecting his presence like that, "You will be born in mrityuloka (mortal world or the earth) and will marry Goddess Ganga. Then she will do something that you will hate him for all your life."
Later, king Shantanu was born to Pratip and Sunanda, king and queen of Hastinapur. Now, why Hastinapur? The centre of the Mahabharat revolves around Hastinapur because it was a famous place. Everything happening there will be noted in the history with golden words. Even today, everything happening in Delhi is considered important because of that reason.
Later, Shantanu saw a beautiful lady along the banks of river Ganga. He immediately wanted to marry her. She said that she will marry him on two conditions, first one is that he will never ask for her identity and the second is that he will never stop her from doing anything or she will leave him immediately.
Shantanu agreed. Soon, Ganga was pregnant. She gave birth to a son and drowned him in river Ganga. Shantanu wanted to stop her but he remembered her conditions. She likewise drowned five more of their sons and when she was going to drown their seventh son, Shantanu finally stopped him.
Ganga smiled and said, "Finally, I am free from this curse. I am taking this child Devratta with me and will make him able enough to serve this kingdom of yours."
Like that, Goddess Ganga disappears with the child, leaving Shantanu heartbroken and sad...
