Chapter 8: The Shape Shifter

The Shape Shifter

"Oi!" Natsu called out. His voice echoed around the silent town. "We have accepted your request for help!" He said louder. "I don't smell or hear anyone." Natsu told me, while he looked around. "I don't like this." I murmured. Natsu grunted in agreement. I began to walk forward when movement caught my eye. I spun and clutched my necklace.

It gleamed in the light.

"What is it?" Natsu jogged over to me and stood by my side. "I saw something." I pointed my other hand to where I had last seen the movement and Natsu narrowed his eyes at the spot. I saw it again. This time it moved faster, "Natsu." I stepped closer to his side. "I saw it." He said, lighting up his fists.

We both tensed when the shadow slipped free of the darkness and came out into the open. I furrowed my brows when I saw what it was.

"A rabbit?" Natsu said, shocked. Then he started to laugh, "We were about to fight a bunny?" I almost started to smile when the rabbit and I locked eyes. My blue against it's...red? My eyes widened and I without hesitating, I spun, grabbed Natsu's hand, and ran. It was too risky to call for my daggers just yet.

"Oi, Fey, what are you doing!?" I didn't answer. I just kept running. That's when I heard a shriek from behind us. I glanced back and saw a wolf chasing after us.

Its jaws were open wide. Revealing sharp, white fangs. I cursed and ran faster with Natsu right behind me. We turned a corner and my eyes locked on an open window. I slid to the right and with Natsu's hand still in my own, rushed toward the window.

We hurtled ourselves through the window and we crashed to the ground. I landed on my back and Natsu landed on top of me. He managed to stop himself before his full weight crushed me. I didn't think. I just acted. I wrapped my arms around him and I rolled. We had to get away from the window.

We couldn't be seen by that thing. I stopped rolling when I was sure we were out of sight. Then I listened carefully for any sounds. When I didn't hear anything for a while I let out a sigh of relief.

We were safe for now.

That's the moment I realized that I was on top of my partner. I unwrapped my arms from around him and quickly stood up. "I'm sorry, Natsu. Are you okay?" I whispered to him.

He nodded with a smile, "Yay, I'm fine. Are you?" I smiled and crouched down beside him. He put his hands behind his head and smirked up at me. "That was fun, eh?"

I chuckled and flicked his forehead, "Sure it was." With a soft laugh he stood up. "So, that was the Shape Shifter?" Natsu asked as he cocked his head to the right. I put my back to the wall and inched toward the window. I peaked out while I answered his question.

"Yes, it was." My eyes darted to the right then to the left. I didn't see anything. I turned around to face Natsu. "All right, Natsu-" I was cut off when I almost rammed into Natsu's chest. "Hmm?" Natsu made a questioning noise.

I blinked and took a step back. "Umm, lets go this way." I told him. I walked around him and began walking around the house. It was odd. It seemed like someone lived here, yet...there was no one. The house, like the town, was empty.

"Why would they ask for our help when their not even here to greet us?" I said my thoughts allowed. "Bad manners?" Natsu said with a shrug. I laughed under my breath. "Sure." I quietly walked around the small living room and went to the next window I saw. I put my back to the wall and peaked out. I froze when I saw the Shape Shifter out front. It was still in its wolf form and it was sniffing the air.

It's trying to pinpoint where we are.

I turned to face Natsu and signaled for him to come over. He walked forward quietly and came to a stop close to me. I watched as the wolf lifted its head suddenly and turned his furry black head toward the window where we were.

I leaned back right into Natsu. He wrapped his arms around me and we stayed absolutely still.

His chest was extremely warm and the arms that were around my stomach were very detracting. I focused my hearing on the wolf and waited. Natsu had Dragon Hearing or whatever so he could probably hear it far better than I. I was proven right when Natsu suddenly dodged to the right with me in his arms.

Just as he did the wolf came crashing in through the window. With a snarl it looked at us with blood shot eyes. The wolf's blood red eyes locked on my blue ones. With a growl it leaped for us.

I was ready.
