Ghost (Chalissa)

Someone just created a Discord Memegilicas server I'm going to be able to make so many joke (crack) vids now XD

———————

They say that Everston Academy is haunted.

Everyone knew the death of Chase Walker. The story had rocked the nation and kickstarted all sorts of drama over the next few years about the White Stone and Cipher rights and Magiclica superiority. While the revolts had been resolved and everything had calmed down, strange things still happened on the school campus. Around the same time every year, people said they could feel a strange presence lingering about. Some say they saw flashes of magic aura. Some heard whispers of a long-forgotten lullaby. Everston gave the day that Chase Walker died off as a Memorial Day, and after that day all the strange occurrences disappeared.

If ghosts were real, there was no doubt that this was the spirit of one of the two that were killed on that night.

But that was more than fifty years ago. Very few people even knew the significance of the day they had off or the statue in the main hall. Those that were still alive that had known Mister Walker were able to come in to the school on that day and pay respects, and that was it.

Chase looked down on the elderly forms of some of his old friends and peers. He couldn't recognize some of them, nor did he want to. He couldn't bring himself to go down and walk among them like he once did, knowing soon they would pass on while he would be stuck in his youth for all eternity. While he guessed that people thought it was the spirit of Ichiro that haunted the school, he bitterly knew the irony that the anarchist had gotten to move on to an afterlife while Chase was trapped in a fate worse than Miss Canaday's "etabiatin senpaitonum."

Chase was saddened that the one person he knew he would recognize was once again not here. She had never shown up to this day. Chase couldn't decide whether to be bitter, knowing she forgot him, or understanding that she had moved on.

He phased through the second floor balcony he had been overlooking on and passed through the cafeteria walls to get to the garden.

Despite the cruel irony of this particular location on the backside of the cafeteria, Chase happened to rather enjoy the courtyard the White Stone Festival was once held in. After his and Ichiro's demises they had stopped holding the Festival here, and no students ever wandered this far into the garden, which meant that Chase could relax here without being walked through or giving people weird feelings.

Chase hopped up on the pedestal that was in the center of the courtyard. It was very small but made a good stage to sing his favorite song.

"Remember me... though I have to say goodbye... Remember me... don't let it make you cry... for even though I'm far away I hold you in my heart... I sing a secret song to you each night we are apart..."

Chase has kept his last promise, at least. He never forgot Melissa. Even if he couldn't remember her face or hear her voice, what she had instilled in him was always with him. And the song broke the silence that constantly surrounded Chase. It was a strange, cruel phenomenon that Chase existed on a different plane than literally everything around him, so he could see but not touch or hear.

He was still humming his song when something felt different. Chase paused and looked around. It wasn't until he realized that there was a girl staring straight at him that his previous thought process might be incorrect.

"Woah," the girl breathed.

Chase blinked. Suddenly his world was no longer deathly quiet. There was the twitter of birdsong in the trees and a gentle breeze made the leaves flutter. There was the mystical ringing of magic being used that Chase hadn't heard since he faded into particles underneath the White Stone that emitted the same sound ten times stronger.

"You... you..."

The girl slowly nodded. "Hello...?"

"How? I-I'm... me... no, wait..." Chase had no words.

She shrugged and held up her glowing palm. "My special power is frequency manipulation. Couple of old movies about scientists catching ghosts made my think of trying to change what kind of a frequency you were on, and voilá!"

Chase's metaphorical heart was skipping beats as so many things were thrown into him at once.

"Ghostbusters i-is a classic. They had just m-made a rem-make when I died. Frequency man-nipulation? L-like... sound?"

Chase knew he would only get hurt but this question, but he had to ask it. The girl glanced down to her feet.

"You're Chase Walker, right? Not Ichiro? Because Ichiro was grown up and you look like an old Everston student."

Chase confirmed who he once was.

The girl took a deep breath. "My grandmother is... Melissa Jayne Harmony. But there's more to the story than that, I swear!"

Chase chuckled. "Y-you assume I was s-suggesting something else. I haven't seen M-Mel in years. She doesn't c-come by anymore. Just w-wanted to know w-what she's been up t-to."

The girl shook her head. "Wait, please. She's told me so many times how much she misses you. She's always said you... you know what, I'll be back."

A portal appeared below her feet and she fell straight into it. As soon as she was gone the ambient noises faded out, leaving Chase in silence once more. He never had thought anything of the quiet before but now all of a sudden he craved hearing the crickets and the wind. His song wasn't enough anymore.

Chase started humming another song, trying to bring comfort to his lonely soul. He let his feet rise off the ground and floated to one of the large second floor windows and tucked himself into the windowsill. He closed his eyes, not wishing to see the trees wave silently in the invisible breeze and a car's headlights light up the buildings on the other side of the street that surrounded the campus.

Of course. I shouldn't have asked. She moved on a long time ago, no wonder she doesn't come visit with the others. She's happy without me...

Chase opened one eye as the world's sounds returned once again. At least her granddaughter kept her promise.

"Hello? Hel-lo~! Where did you go?"

"Who are you calling to?"

That was a new voice. It was airy and slightly strained but not unpleasant to listen to. Down in the cobblestoned plaza there was Melissa's granddaughter with her hand glowing teal with a woman with pale hair that was tinted blue ever-so-slightly. The woman was looking around and her eyes met Chase's.

"Why are we here... Oh my god..."

Chase's throat tightened as he recognized the woman's eyes. Forest green, dull but intelligent, framed by wavy sky blue hair that was braided in the same crown around her head.

"M-Melissa?"

"Chase... oh Chase... oh my god..."

Chase slowly floated down to meet Melissa. They were a strange sight- an elderly woman seeing her high school lover who hadn't aged in over fifty years. And yet despite their differences, both were completely lost for words. Melissa's granddaughter sensed the tension and backed away just enough to give them space but keep using her power so the two could talk.

"S-So... How's life?"

"Don't be cheeky with that kind of pun. I... I can't believe it..." Melissa's voice, for once, failed her.

Chase chuckled. "D-don't then. You haven't b-been here since, s-so what does it m-matter?"

Melissa's eyes widened and her shoulders sagged. "I keep planning on coming today, but then... I can never bring myself to step out the door. To admit that you're... gone. I know the rumors about Everston but I couldn't face... I couldn't face that the only one who has ever loved me for me was gone before I could figure myself out. I had tried so hard to move on, but then after everything, people just wanted to be with me for popularity or for power. You... you knew me better than anyone and I didn't acknowledge it then it was too late and I never got to tell you I'm so sorry and I wish things had been different and..."

Despite the resentment Chase had held in his mind for so long about this girl he had known, he was also forgiving. Melissa was a beautiful, intelligent, strong woman and she hadn't deserved to be used the way she had.

Her head was lowered and her thinned but still elegant hair hung over her shoulder. "And then I grew old, Chase, and my purpose was done. The COM doesn't want outdated information from an old lady and no one wants to deal with my shattered fragments. I wish things had been different, so so different..."

Melissa's granddaughter winced at her grandmother'c conflict. She loved her grandmother and wished that she could somehow have helped ease her pain. Things had gone so wrong for her that night and she had lost herself in the years following where the COM wanted answers and people wanted justice. Her father (Melissa's son) told her about how he had been raised just by Melissa and how the COM had watched their family of two for the longest time until one day they decided that Miss Harmony was no longer of service to them. Her granddaughter didn't know how to help but she hoped maybe this encounter could finally help Melissa heal.

Chase tenaciously reached out and placed his hand where it would rest on Melissa's shoulder. As she breathed it phased through her ever so slightly, but she smiled at the gesture and made the gesture to place her hand almost on top of his.

"I-I'm sorry for thinking that w-way about you. A-After you l-left Everston I d-didn't know."

"It's alright. I wish I could join you so you wouldn't be alone."

Melissas' granddaughter gasped as she heard her say that. It made sense, but to hear her anyone wish for death so casually would shock anyone. Melissa was not that old, she still had time.

Chase shrugged. "I c-can't do anything, sorry. B-besides, you wouldn't stay a-anyway. You'd get t-to move on to a b-better p-place, like Quinston and C-Connor."

"Nah, I'd find a way. I know I don't have long to wait anyway. I'm Melissa Harmony after all. Miscelas aren't supposed to exist so why should I go with the rest?"

Chase knew he should be concerned, but a small smile still graced his fifteen-year-old face.

As this satirical conversation of depressing jokes continued, Melissa's granddaughter realized that her grandmother was becoming less solid. A slight glow surrounded her, the same as the spirit of Chase. She adjusted her powers to try and fix the problem until she realized what was happening.

Melissa was dying.

She knew that she was dying. Her grandmother had been busting the doctor often recently and had seemed strangely content with the information. Her granddaughter knew she should try and stop what was happening, but she seemed so happy, so certain... It was how she and her father had wanted to see her their entire lives.

Melissa suddenly took Chase's hand and placed her hand on his shoulder. He was surprised, and even more so when she moved his other hand to be on her waist, in a dancing position. She started humming a melody and took the first step.

"R-Remember the W-Winter Formal?"

"Yep. When I was still interested in Michael... not a good idea. I'm sorry about totally brushing you off then."

"Eh, we were k-kids."

"We're still kids, really."

Melissa started humming again, this time a different song. Chase recognized it and started singing along.

"Until you're in my arms again..."

"Remember me."

Chase spun them around and the two figures faded from existence in front of the granddaughter's eyes. The light blue faded from around her hand; her powers were no longer needed. She didn't know how to feel about this. She had just witnessed her grandmother's death, yet she was not upset or disturbed. After staring at the spot she had last seen them a moment longer, she looked away and pulled out her phone to call her father.

Guess that ghosts do exist, but even they eventually find their peace.
