Prologue

Eitil looked out the window to his large room and sighed. His dark blue-green scales shimmered in the light of the full moon, his eyes matching the silver color of the moon and stars that littered the sky he stared at almost longingly. He had always wanted to see what was beyond the borders of the town his parents ruled, but they forbade him from ever venturing past the gates to see ever since he was a small dragnet and almost killed by a wild creature who's territory he had trespassed on.
Eitil was thinking on a way to escape this place, on a way to leave his home and his royal family behind. His younger brother, Cael, could become the heir instead of him. He had always wanted to be king anyways, Eitil was sure he would be happy to hear he could afterall. The problem was that what if his parents decided to look for him? What if they decided they wished to bring him back to this prison? He didn't want to come back, he wanted to be free and to be far away from here.
That was when he decided, he would leave. He would run away. He would leave a note, telling his parents to make Cael the heir and to not come and look for him. He'd bring some of his books, the ones about learning other languages such as Latin, Japanese, and Irish. Most importantly, he would fly far, far away from here, and he would never look back, never return.

That morning, his parents came in to wake him so he could start his daily routine, only to find an empty room with no sign of their son apart from a note layed down onto his desk. On read the following:

Dear mother and father,
I have left. I will not return home. Ever. Please do not come to look for me, I never wanted to be apart of this life and I feel that leaving is for the best. Make Cael the heir to your throne instead of me, he would be very eager to learn and would be a fine king. Yet again, please do not look for me, it would be of no use. I wouldn't be a good king anyways, so it's for the better of your kingdom too. I'm going to study what a wish to study and do the things I wish to do, and not be trapped in any walls or caged by any rules while I do so anymore, so leave me to be.
Sincerely,
     Your son Eitil

Eitil's parents looked at each other after reading his note. They nodded, simultaneously, agreeing together on the same thought. They would honor his decision, they would not search for him, and they would do their best to raise their only other son better than they did to Eitil, without any rules to confine him to the walls of this city and allow him to do as he pleases. They would give the responsibility of heir to the throne to Cael, just as both the sons had wanted, and they would leave Eitil be.
Eitil was never expected to be seen in the kingdom again after that, and his parents were perfectly fine with that, as they truly believed that it was all well, so long as he was doing what he wanted and what he loved.
