Twenty One

"What's up with you?" Brian asked closing the door. He'd just come from his meeting with his father to find Abby pacing back and forth in the living room. He really didn't want to know what was bothering her but if he didn't ask, she wouldn't stop pacing.

"I am so angry I could kill someone" she said throwing her phone on the sofa to hard, it was a wonder it didn't break.

"Why? What happened?"

"That idiot Drew got someone pregnant. I asked him to tell me who it was but he refused. Now he's not picking up my calls"

"I told you that he didn't deserve you. Why don't you just forget about him?"

"I'll forget about him. But not before I find out who that girl is. I'll kill them both then forget about them"

Brian sighed. If this is what it took for Abby to see what scum that Drew was then he was happy. His sister did stupid things when she was angry or jealous but she wasn't a bad person. She deserved someone who would love her. Maybe then she could realize that she didn't need to be jealous of anyone. As for the girl Drew got pregnant, she would be better off if she raised the baby alone. He'd known from the beginning what kind of person that guy was. It was the reason he was against their relationship so much.

Since Abby knew the truth now, all that was left was to get Maggie away from him. He would have gone to see her today but his father wouldn't let him go. He was going on a trip so he left Brian in charge of everything. He took all afternoon to explain how things worked and what he should do if he had any problems. You'd think it was the first time he was doing this. Brian chose to keep his mouth shut and listen because he didn't want to argue with his old man. By the time he got home, it was almost 8pm.

He was on his way to take a shower when someone knocked. Abby was still in a fit so he opened the door. Maggie was standing on the other side "Hey, I tried calling but you didn't pick up" she said shifting her bag from one hand to the other, a sign that she was nervous "Are you still mad at me?"

"Mad?" he had been angry but at moment he couldn't remember why. Suddenly two days felt like two centuries. Until that second he hadn't realized how much he missed her. Grabbing her hand, he pulled her inside "Come on, let's talk"

"I have to tell you something first"

"I promise I'm not angry. Not anymore"

"It's not that. I just found out today that I'm pregnant"

Brian dropped her hand as if it had burnt him. Before he could react, Abby rushed towards them screaming "It's you? You are the one he got pregnant?"

"Move aside Abby. Are you insane?" he asked snapping out of his shock and putting a hand in front of them to block his sister from getting to Maggie.

"No. But what are the chances that she's the one? I just found out that Drew got someone pregnant and she rushes here to tell you she's pregnant? Is that a coincidence?"

"What are you talking about Abby?" Maggie asked confused. The fact that she was confused about it made him feel a little better.

"Oh please, stop pretending. That is Drew's baby. Am I right? Tell me the truth"

"What is going on Brian? Why is Abby saying that our baby is Drew's?"

"Tell me the truth you bitch. Isn't it enough that you took everything away from me? Why do you have to steal my boyfriend too?" she moved forward to attack Maggie but Brian held her back.

"Stop it Abby. Don't involve Maggie in your problems with Drew. She has nothing to do with it"

"Don't be stupid Brian. Look at her, don't let that innocent face fool you. It's her. I know it's her. Drew didn't want to tell me who it was because he knew you would find out"

"Abby this is a misunderstanding...."

"Don't you dare talk to me you witch. I am so tired of you acting like a saint when you're the devil incarnate. Listen here Maggie, you might have fooled my boyfriend but I won't let you fool my brother. Do you hear me? I am going to rip you to pieces if you don't start talking"

Pushing Abby behind him Brian told Maggie to leave "We'll talk later. Right now it's too late and I don't want you to fight with Abby"

"But you don't believe what she's saying. Right? This is our baby Brian. I swear it's not Drew's or anyone else's"

"Just go Maggie. I'll see you tomorrow"

"Brian....."

"Leave!" she flinched at his tone of voice. He didn't mean to sound so harsh but they were both driving him crazy. Couldn't they be in the same room for one second without fighting? Between the two of them, who was he supposed to protect? After Maggie had left, he turned to Abby "What is wrong with you? Why are you always picking fights with Maggie? What has she ever done to you?"

"You're a lot of things Brian. But stupid is not one of them"

"Just because Maggie is pregnant doesn't mean that baby is Drew's"

"Yeah, you keep telling yourself that. I don't care what you think. I am a hundred percent sure that she's carrying my boyfriend's child and I'll be damned if I sit back and watch them rub it in my face"

"Sometimes I don't understand you Abby. How could you think that Maggie would ever be with Drew?"

"This love you feel for her is blinding you. You can't even see the truth when it's right in front of you. I just found out my boyfriend got someone pregnant. These days, he spends all his time with Maggie. Why can't you put two and two together? Even someone stupid would be able to see the truth"

"I'm going to my room. I would appreciate it if you stop accusing my girlfriend of something she hasn't done"

"When you're done being in denial, you'll realize what I'm saying is the truth"

Brian chose to ignore her. But no matter what he did he couldn't shake off the feeling that something was going on. Of course he didn't believe that the baby Maggie was carrying was Drew's. So what made Abby jump to that conclusion? Was there something he didn't know? There was no doubt that the baby was his. It had to be. Otherwise he didn't know what he would do to that Drew. He realized that he was capable of killing that man if he found out that what Abby was saying was true.

------------------

She hadn't slept all night. The fact that Brian had asked her to leave made Maggie think that what Drew had said might be true. Was Brian trying to run away from his responsibilities? What would she do if he decided to leave her? She couldn't support a baby on her own. The jobs she'd gotten so far hadn't paid much. Only the Nivea contract could help her. But if she was pregnant then she wouldn't be able to do it. How long would it take until her stomach started showing?

Thomas had already taken care of her. She couldn't expect him to take care of her baby too. It wouldn't be right. No, she had to make Brian see that their baby had nothing to do with Drew. And why would Abby think that her boyfriend had gotten her pregnant? She'd never even thought of being with Drew that way. She respected him because he'd been good to her. She also loved Brian. She would never think of leaving him to be with someone else.

"You look worse than yesterday. Have you seen Brian? Did you tell him?" Sheila asked.

"I went to see him but we didn't talk. Abby was there"

"God, I hate that bitch. It's as if she was put on this earth to get in your way"

"Can I ask you something?"

"Yeah. What is it?"

"Do you know of any guys who get other girls pregnant then refuse it?"

Sheila laughed "Half the population does that these days. They get women pregnant then run away. That's why there are so many single moms out there. Why did you ask? Did Brian do that?"

"No. But I'm not sure what he'll do. When I went to see him yesterday he said that he wasn't angry. But when I told him I was pregnant, he changed. Add what Abby was saying and I'm not sure if he even wants to see me anymore"

"What did Abby say?"

"That it was Drew who got me pregnant"

"Okay, that's it. Tell me where she lives. I think it's time I put that bitch in her place"

"No Sheila. Fighting with Abby will only make Brian angrier"

"But do you always stand by and listen to her nonsense? You're a big girl. You should start fighting back"

"Remember what happened last time when I fought back?"

"That acid thing? Please it would have been better if...."

"What are you two gossiping about now?" Drew asked startling them.

"You idiot, you scared me" Sheila exclaimed putting her hand on her heart.

"Scaredy cat. It's daytime, what are you scared of?"

"Of you transmitting your idiocy. What do you want?"

"I came for my partner. We still have training to do"

"Can't you do it alone?"

Sensing an argument brewing, Maggie cut in "It's okay Sheila. We'll just talk later"

"You don't have to listen to him. He's not your boss"

"It's really okay. I'll be fine"

Huffing, she left them alone. Even though Maggie knew she might not get the Nivea contract, she couldn't abandon Drew. He'd helped her and the least she could do was be there for him. If he needed someone to train with then she would be there. But concentrating on what he was saying proved to be harder when all she could think about was how Brian had told her to leave. He'd said he wasn't angry but he was lying. Otherwise, why would he tell her to leave?

"....ggie, Maggie!" Drew yelled getting in her face "Where is your head today? Did you hear anything I said?"

"I'm sorry. I was distracted"

"By what? Did you fight with your boyfriend again?"

"No"

"Then what?" he inquired taking his phone out reading a message then putting it back.

"It's nothing. I promise to concentrate"

From the expression on his face, he didn't believe her. Sighing, he put his hands on her shoulders "You're not just distracted Maggie. You're also sad. Tell me what's wrong. Maybe I can help you"

"I'm fine Drew. Don't worry about me"

"That translates to 'mind your own business' right?"

"What? No. That's not what I...."

"Okay then. If you don't want to talk to me then there's only one option left"

"What?" instead of answering, he started tickling her. Maggie was taken aback that she stood frozen for a few seconds. Then she started laughing while trying to slap his hands away. When that failed, she tried to run away but he grabbed her hand and pulled her back. He used so much force that they tumbled to the floor. With her on top of him. She tried to move but he flipped them, trapping her beneath him and continued tickling her.

"You look so beautiful when you laugh. Why are you always frowning?" he asked easing up on her.

"I don't frown"

"Yes you do. Especially these past few days" taking her face in his hands, he bent down until they were nose to nose "You're beautiful and brilliant Maggie. Don't ever let anyone make you sad. If being with Brian is the reason you're always so down then I suggest you find someone that makes you happy"

"I love Brian. He makes me happy"

"I'm just saying that if he ever stops making you happy then you shouldn't be with him. As your friend, I want to see you happy"

"Okay. Can you move please?"

"Why? Are you shy now? Margaret Baraka is shy? Who knew?" Drew teased without moving an inch.

"I'm not shy. I just think....."

"What would you do if I kissed you?"

"What? No, don't do that Drew. Brian will get mad if he finds out" she said placing her palms on his shoulders to push him away. But he was stronger than she was.

"You should see your face right now" he told her laughing.

"No one would be able to recognize yours once I'm done with you" Brian snarled from somewhere beside them. Maggie tried to push Drew away but he was like a rock.

"Oh hey Brian. When did you get here?"

"Get off me Drew" she said desperately. Just from the tone of his voice, Maggie knew Brian was angry again. She wondered why Drew wasn't moving. If he could get off her, she would be able to talk to Brian. In the position she was in, she couldn't even see him.

"You really are shy Maggie. Look at yourself blushing"

"Blushing? What are you talking about Drew?"

"You're so adorable when... " before he finished what he was about to say, he was pulled back. She realized that Brian had lifted him off her.

"You imbecile, I'm going to teach you how to respect other people's girlfriends today"

"I dare you to hit me Brian. Come on, hit me"

"No, please don't fight" Maggie cried out getting up from the floor.

"Why? Are you afraid I'll ruin his face?" Brian asked her then turned to Drew "Do you think she will still want you if I break your nose and knock off all your teeth?"

"It doesn't matter what you do to me. She will still love me"

It happened so fast. One second Drew was standing, the next he was on the floor holding his cheek. Without thinking Maggie rushed forward to help him up "Are you okay?"

"Are you kidding me?" Brian yelled pushing her back "Why do you care if he's okay or not?"

"Don't you dare touch her" Drew said standing in front of her.

"You know what, Abby was right. I was in denial but now I see it. Neither of you is worth me wasting my time on. I'm done with you Maggie. I don't ever want to see your face or your little boyfriend here won't be able to stop me" Brian spun around and left. Pushing Drew aside, she tried to go after him but her held her back.

"Let me go. I have to talk to him"

"Why?"

"Because he's my boyfriend and I love him. We're going to have a baby Drew, he can't break up with me"

"You're better off without him Maggie. Why do you want to be with a man who doesn't trust you?"

"This is just a misunderstanding. If I explain what happened he'll understand"

"Don't be an idiot. Brian doesn't love you. He's just looking for an excuse to break up with you now that he knows you're pregnant. Remember what I said?"

"No, Brian isn't like that. Let me go Drew. I need to talk to him" she cried clawing at his hands but he wouldn't let go.

"No. I won't let you go after someone who doesn't love you. He just broke up with you. Forget about him Maggie"
