Chapter 8

Once arriving at my house, I turned off the engine and took out my keys, grabbed the three plastic bags and got out of the car, slamming it closed behind me and unlocked my door, went inside and sat my bags down onto the kitchen counter, grabbing a wok off of the pots and pans rack that was hanging above the kitchen island. Placed it onto the stove and started preparing my ingredients for our special meal.

Feeling a bit in the mood for something to drink, I opened the freezer and pulled out a cold bottle of vodka, closing it behind me as I grabbed a glass from the cabinet. And got some ice from the ice machine on the fridge, poured me a cold glass. As the food continued to simmer in the wok, the delicious smells of the pepper steak and rice filled the air, making me hungrier by the second.

Checking the rice and giving it a good stir, I could tell that it was done. As I was putting it into a decorated glass bowl that I never used. I happened to look at the clock on my phone and saw that it was exactly 5:59. I had a total of one whole minute to get ready before Hailey got here. Turning off the stove and leaving the hot bowl of rice on the kitchen island and went into my room and quickly got ready.

As soon as I stepped out of the shower and wrapped my towel around my waist. I heard the sound of a car door slam and then heard knocking at my front door. Not too worried about my appearance I left my bathroom and grabbed my gun just in case and went into the living room and stopped at the front door and said. "Who is it?"

"Hey, big guy! It's me, Hailey. Open the door." I heard her sweet angelic voice say from the other side of the door.

Quickly, I placed my gun onto the table beside me and then opened the door for her. Opening the door, there stood Hailey, in all her beauty. Her normal outfit which usually consisted of a dress and a pair of heels. Was replaced with a pair of black skinny jeans, a black long sleeve shirt, and a pair of black ankle style combat boots.

As she walked into the house, I watched as she looked me up and down and then noticed the smile that had appeared on her face, then heard her say with a flirtatious sound to her voice. "You know big guy you didn't have to get all dressed up for me."

"Well, if you play your cards right tonight, sweetheart. Then you might get lucky." Who the hell was I kidding, she was going to get lucky tonight. But first, I had to handle the situation at hand and find out some things from her.

Once I said those words I watched her come over to me and give me a hug and then watched her stand up on her tip toes waiting for me to kiss her. I couldn't resist her at all. So, I leaned down a bit and kissed her. The feeling of that kiss made the room feel electrified by just that kiss and I knew that I wanted more.

In fact, we were so into our kiss that when my towel dropped from around my waist neither one of us noticed or even paid any attention to it at all. I picked her up and carried her over to my couch and sat her down, finishing off our passionate kiss. Once we parted, we exchanged loving glances at one another until I realized that our supper was starting to get cold.

Raising quickly from where I was at in front of her I said, "I'll be back in a minute. You go ahead and make yourself comfortable. I'm going to go get dressed really quick. Just make yourself at home."

With that said I watched as Hailey nodded at me in understandment and I left for a few minutes and quickly dressed and applied some of my favorite cologne. Before I came back out into the living room, walking by the couch where Hailey was sitting at waiting patiently on me. Once she saw me I watched her stand up from where she was sitting at and followed me into the kitchen.

Once in the kitchen with Hailey close behind. I grabbed a small metal ice pail from underneath the kitchen sink and added ice to it, placed the bottle of wine that I had bought earlier, inside. And placed it on the kitchen island and then grabbed two glasses and placed them near the wine.

With the plates also grabbed I quickly plated our food and ushered her over to the kitchen island and she sat down beside me. During the start of our meal it was kind of quiet and the silence was starting to annoy me some. So, I looked over to Hailey and said. "So, you're a cop, huh?"

I watched as Hailey blinked a few minutes and stared at me with sort of a shocked look on her face before I heard her speak. "How did you know."

"Eh. I saw you this morning outside the hotel that I just purchased."

I watched as she picked up her wine glass and then took a sip, then placed it down and then asked. "You mean you bought the old Sunset Hotel? I've been wondering who was going to finally buy that place considering that it has been sitting there abandoned for years. What do you plan on doing with it?" She asked with curiosity.

"Well, I had thought about restoring it back to what it looked like during its glory years. Back when it was a big hit here in the 1940s. I've always loved retro old things and especially buildings with historic meaning. So, I think that this would be something nice for Miami to have."

Hailey nodded her head in agreement with what I had said. And we continued to talk a bit more about the Sunset Hotel. Until our conversation somehow led us back to what Hailey did as a cop. Feeling a bit interested in her career choice I asked. "So, I bet during your time as a cop you've had to deal with a lot of bad people?"

"Yeah, sometimes I do. But most of the time it's just having to deal with people who break minor traffic rules, like running stop signs or driving without a drivers license. But to be honest with you my favorite part of my job is when I can spend time with the different communities in Miami and try to build a trust and understanding with them. I've even a couple of times when I used to do beat patrol I would stop and play hopscotch with some of the kids that lived in the neighborhood that I patrolled." Hailey said with a smile.

"That's nice. At least you enjoy your job."

"Yep. It can be fun at times. Say, I've always been curious, but, what kind of business are you into?" I heard her ask as I ate the last part of my meal and placed my fork onto my empty plate.

I thought about her question for a minute I wanted to tell her what I truly was. But, in all reality I was nervous about telling her that I am the Pakhan of one of the largest Russian mafia families in Miami. However, though I think that it would be best if I waited a little bit of time before I told her who I truly am.

"I deal with selling antiques in an auction that my company runs, and I buy old historic buildings here in Miami and run them to the highest of standards."

As I continued to talk I could tell that Hailey was entranced by the conversation that we were having, and I just knew that it was meant to be for the two of us. But, I also knew that this relationship would only last if I just became truthful with her about what I really am.

Once we had both finished our meal, I grabbed our plates and placed them into the dishwasher so that they could be washed later on tonight, then followed Hailey into the living room where I turned on my tv and changed the channel that it was originally on to the nightly news. As Hailey sat in my lap and cuddled against my chest.

The news was fairly boring, and I was so damn tempted to turn it to something else. That was however, until one news story in particular caught my eye. I sat up a little on the couch, bringing Hailey closer to my body as I listened to what the female news anchor reported.

"Yesterday, the dismembered body of a man and several decomposing corpses were found in a storage shed of a funeral home crematory. The name of the dismembered corpse was released today, and his name was Lex Marino, he was a wanted felon with a large criminal past." She said as a picture of the man was shown on screen.

As I looked at the screen I noticed that the man looked very familiar, like I had seen him somewhere before. I looked at the picture again and then that's when it hit me and I knew that we were in a world of trouble.
