Chapter 27
How the fuck did this happen? Zameer thought to himself as he punched the wall.
He couldn't believe what had recently come to pass. And he couldn't help but blame himself for what happened.
He swallowed hard against the lump in his throat and turned around to face his boss.
Shehryaar was in a coma and in intensive care. The attack from Nawaz two days ago left him badly wounded. Zameer was glad that he found him in time. He was But what worried him more to the point of anxiety was the fact that Anissa was missing. She was no where in sight. And he had been out on a man hunt for the past two days straight.
Zameer was left in exasperation and fury at himself. He couldn't believe that he failed Shehryaar yet again. He was suppose to protect his Saeen. But because of his incompetence, Shehryaar was put in danger and Anissa went missing.
He turned around when he heard the door open and in walked Qadeem.
"Any leads?" Zameer asked, his voice hoarse due to the overwhelming emotions he was feeling.
"Nothing yet."
"Did they send word."
"None. But still we need to wait."
"Why fucking wait?" Zameer growled. Qadeem wasn't surprised that Zameer had lost all his cool. It was well understood that he would lose his cool if anything happened with the Saeen but it was only just recent that he came to see Zameer so affected when it came to Anissa.
"I don't think that they have her." Qadeem spoke coolly. "If they did, they would've found her with him and would've killed them both. But boss is alive. It's possible that she ran away."
"But the condition she's in, I don't think she's capable of going anywhere by herself." Zameer grumbled, gritting his teeth together to hold back his rage and despair. He couldn't even begin to think of the possiblities.
"I don't think so Zameer. The torn pieces of cloth around boss's wounds were from her dupatta." Qadeem tried to make him see sense in the situation. But he couldn't really blame Zameer for feeling distraught. Even Qadeem knew of how protective Zameer was of the couple.
Zameer quietly stared at Shehryaar's unconscious face. The way that they had found him, so badly injured, it was a miracle that he even survived because he had lost so much blood.
Where are you, Bhabi? He thought in despair. He felt so powerless. How could he cause this to happen? He was suppose to protect Anissa but again, he failed miserably.
Shehryaar was safe and out of harms way but Zameer was, in no way, satisfied with the situation. Not unless he found Anissa and saw with his own eyes that she was safe as well, he wouldn't rest in peace.
Zameer staggered towards Shehryaar and looked at his unconscious face. "I'll find her. I will." He avowed and sighed to himself, squeezing Shehryaar's shoulder. And he didn't vow to himself simply for Shehryaar's sake but for his own self as well.
"Any clues?"
"No, we've searched around the entire place. There's no sign of her."
"Fuck!" Zameer hissed undet his breath. Qadeem sighed as he saw Zameer rub his face in frustration. "This much is certain that Nawaz doesn't have her. She was with Shehryaar in that cave. Her torn dupatta was wrapped around his wounds to stop the bleeding."
"Damn it!" Zameer clenched his fists tightly. His blood boiled with rage. How did the enemy outsmart them?
The security was perfect. Everything was suppose to go smoothly. And it was all in Zameer's control. Then how did this happen?
"Can't you trace her tracker?" Qadeem enquired.
Zameer shook his head. "Only the Saeen knows the password." He muttered and glared at Qadeem with bloodshot eyes. "I'll head another search party."
"Not now Zameer." Qadeem said but to Zameer, he heard a command. And it angered him.
"Why the fuck not?"
"I'll send another search party. You need to go and rest."
"How can I fucking rest when-"
"That's an order Zameer!" Qadeem commanded sternly. And even though Qadeem was the second in command, he still looked up to Zameer for guidance but at the moment, he had to be the one in control because Zameer was in no shape to work or talk.. Zameer felt like hitting Qadeem right in the jaw and break his smug face but he knew he couldn't do that. Now that Shehryaar was down, Qadeem was the acting Saeen.
"Go home and rest. You haven't eaten or slept in over two whole days. In this condition, you'll end up more as a liability then anything." Qadeem said. And Zameer couldn't argue with that. Zameer shot a hateful glare at Qadeem. If only he was the second in command, then this bastard wouldn't dare stop him or order him around. Before Zameer could retaliate, Qadeem gave him a sympathetic look and grabbed his shoulders.
"I know how you feel. That's why, when you've calmed down a bit and are in better functioning condition, that's when you can go and continue the search. But for now, try to get some rest and leave the search to me. I'm giving you six hours. After that, you can do whatever you want. But for now, get some rest."
Zameer glared at Qadeem but he couldn't argue with him. He could see the sincerity in Qadeem's hard eyes. Even though they were rivals, they held respect for one another. Qadeem deeply respected Zameer and trusted him when he knew that things would turn bad. And because he was the former second in command, Qadeem knew that even if Shehryaar didn't want it, Zameer would still hold the reigns when the Mafia needed him.
Zameer went to his car. Punching the steering wheel, Zameer felt like killing someone. His anger was out of control.
If only I would've been more focused. If only I had done my fucking job. This wouldn't have happened. He thought to himself as he punched the steering wheel. Only one face flashed in his mind and that made his blood boil with rage.
Sadia.
It was all her fault.
Why did she distract him so much? Why couldn't she get out of his head?
In his weary and exhausted state of mind, he couldn't help but think in that direction.
I need a drink. He thought to himself as he started his car, realising that he was thinking in a very dangerous and horrible direction.
*************
Sadia quietly crept through the shadows. All she needed to do was be extremely careful. The good thing about the nighttime was that there weren't many guards present especially inside and with the important people out of the building, there wasn't much left to guard or protect. But that didn't mean she could be careless. When the moment of truth would come, she would have but seconds to take action.
With quick and quiet steps, she climbed the stairs to the second floor. Her hands held the objects that she would use. As she came up, quickly, she rushed to the far north window at the end of the corridor. The window was large and it had wide bars grilled around the space of the square glass. But Sadia had already calculated that it would be enough for her to pass through. As she looked out and downwards, she sighed with relief when she saw that the boundary wall was not too far from the window. It was but a few inches away from the window and the wall.
She looked around to the ceiling and to her relief, she only saw one camera at the corner. Throughout her night routing, she had noticed that in the ends of the corridors, there were single surveillance cameras and they were pointed towards the inside. But she was heavily hoping and relying on the fact that the security wouldn't be so strict. Because while all the other nights, no one bothered her with it or stopped her. And she hoped that it stayed that way even now but she knew, as soon as she would take action, it would attract the security personnel.
As she settled down, sitting close to the edge of the window, she unrolled the long rope of cloth that she had spent the last two days making. Her hands were blistered from tearing the sheets and tying them together. It was troubling and hard to have to do something like this especially when she was being watched all the time but she managed somehow. And now, her plan was set in motion.
Ya Allah, please help me. She prayed hard as she had been because she was doing effort from her part but she knew that prayers would make her motives come to reality. And she had full faith. She never lost hope. And now, she was going to escape.
She tied an end off the rope as tightly as she could. Just as she was done, a strike of thunder and lighteneing caused the glass of the window to shudder and Sadia had to stop herself from screaming. She was startled, her heart was hammering loudly and her ears were ringing but she didn't pay it much mind.
The thunder would make a good diversion. She never thought that things would work well in her favor. So, she stood up and waited. She looked around but could not find nothing except ceramics and paintings around the corridor which would be useless. so she had no choice but to use her own body as she thought things through. As soon as another lightening bolt struck the heavens, she kicked hard on the glass as hard as she could. The noise was successfully masked by the loud crackle of the lightening but impact of the strike was so hard on her soft and delicate foot that it caused Sadia to stop and wail in silence.
"Buck up, Sadia." She hissed to herself as tears welled up in her eyes as she fisted her hands by her side and clenched her teeth to hold in the pain. "Be strong."
Her words to herself were enough to make her feel a little bit courageous. But she was brave. And she knew it. If she wasn't, she wouldn't be trying to escape. So standing up, her legs shaking and her right foot aching, she gnashed her teeth together and waited for the lightening. After two more strikes, she saw the the glass crack a bit. And that was enough to make her feel euphoric.
Zameer entered the mansion, dead drunk and barely standing on his feet. But he had only one thing in mind.
Sadia.
He needed to see her. And confront her.
All his anger was channeling towards her. Why did she distract him? Why was she having this effect on him?
The alcohol in his blood was causing him to not see any sense or reason at all.
A part of him was begging him to just go to bed but a bigger part of him was too hell bent on doing what he wanted.
His emotions were going haywire. And the only reprieve he saw was through confrontation.
He staggered up the stair case and to the first floor, but as soon as he came close to Sadia's bedroom door, he heard a loud noise of glass breaking.
Sadia was no longer waiting for the thunder and lightening. She struck for the last time and the glass broke. Sadia quickly went for the vase to the closest table and was about to struck at the window when she heard loud footsteps. But she didn't stop and struck hard against the glass and succeeded in breaking the corner.
"Stop!"
Sadia didn't stop when she heard someone call. But she only had one thing in mind and that was to escape. Adrenaline was pumping high in her veins and her blood was rushing to her muscles, energising her to the optimum.
Zameer saw someone at the end of the hall and even though his vision was blurry, his gun was in his hands. He ran towards the intruder except that it wasn't an intruder. It was Sadia.
"Sadia?!" He said to himself.
I'm too drunk. He thought but when he got close, it was unmistakably Sadia.
"Sadia!" He shouted and grabbed her shoulder but Sadia was too fixed on the task at hand. She only had a few minutes before the guards arrived.
"Sadia Stop!" He commanded and grabbed a hold of her waist. Sadia screamed and on impulse, her arms flung back with the broken vase and struck it at Zameer's head, hitting him hard enough to cause a deep laceration and blood to splatter.
Groaning in pain, Zameer's hold loosened on Sadia and it was enough for Sadia to gain an upper hand. She turned and hit him again with the blunt end at the back of his head until Zameer fell to the ground with his forehead bleeding heavily. Sadia quickly saw that the gun Zameer held had still in his grip but his fingers had loosened around the grip. Taking her chances, she went and tried to take it and to her surprise, Zameer was too lost in pain to struggle that she ended up taking the gun from his hand.
Sadia felt remorseful. She was afraid and had no intention of harming anyone but she didn't have any choice. She would not give into her fear or uncertainty. So she focused all her attention and energy on making her escape.
Turning to the window, she held the gun tightly in her hands and even though she had never used a weapon in her life, the mechanics of it worked inside her head and she followed through, pulling the trigger. The loud noise of the gun blared in her ears but she didn't care as the bullets fired and shattered the glass of the window.
The whole window came crashing down. Sadia moved quickly and threw the rope down from the grill, wrapping it around her hands. Clearing the glass from the edges, she held the gun while turning in the safety. Without a glance towards Zameer, she quickly yet carefully managed to press through the narrow bars of the grill.
And she was out, climbing down until she came to the boundary wall and in no time, she fell to the ground below, landing on the forest floor.
