Boys Day Out

Ruru couldn't help but sigh. He had been spending almost half of his morning with Noelle placing makeup on his face just after they had 'tea time'. Don't get him wrong, he didn't hate it, far from it. He loves spending time and playing with his princess but, he feels like he isn't spending enough time with Amir.

"Baba, what do want for eyeshadow? Purple or pink?" Noelle asks grinning and showing Ruru her eyeshadow palette.

"Anything you like, Kikay," he replied smiling.

"Okay, purple!" she exclaimed and started putting on a very bright shade of purple on his eyelid.

"Baby, enough na. Can we go have a snack first?" he says making an excuse to get her to stop. He loved their little make over sessions but, he needed to bond with his son too.

"No thank you, Baba. I'm not hungry," she responds to his horror.

"What about water? Di ba inuuhaw si ikaw?" he asks with both eyes still closed.

"Hindi po," he grinned when he heard her speaking Tagalog.

She sounds so cute.

"Everyone, come downstairs! It's snack time!" Kylie exclaims from the kitchen to his great relief.

Ruru carried Noelle and held Amir's hand down the stairs to make sure they wouldn't run. All the while, Amir was laughing at how his father's face was all colored with so much make up.

They reached the kitchen and Ruru sat both of his children on their chairs. Kylie turned around and put peanut butter and jelly sandwiches on their kid's plate and smiled at them each. When she placed a sandwich on his plate, she looked at him and almost burst out laughing.

"Uhm, Babe, can we talk in the kitchen please?" she asks biting her cheeks while her shoulders were already shaking.

They excused themselves from the children and scurried to the kitchen. Kylie turned into a fit of giggles the moment they were far from the children's ears.

"What happened to your face?" she managed to ask inbetween her laughs.

"Your daughter. That's what happened to my face," he replied with a straight face.

"Oh, so now she's only my daughter?" she sarcastically asked her laughter dying down to a slight chuckle.

"Remind me again, why I agreed on buying her that Claire's make up kit?" he asks grudgingly in return.

"Because she pouted at you, that's why."

"Right," he sighed, "So what is it that you wanna talk about?"

"What shade she used for your lipstick because it looks so fucking cute on you," she replied jokingly causing him to pout his lips and smirk as if he was striking a pose for a picture.

"I don't know really but, it looks so cute and so tots lit. You like it, Beshie?" he responds in what she assumes is his 'girly' voice.

"Babe, what the hell?" she started hysterically laughing again as he continued posing. He loved it that he could make her laugh like this because she's so beautiful when she's happy.

"Okay, okay, I'll stop. Why'd you wanna talk to me?" he says as he stopped posing and Kylie wiped the tears in her eyes.

She cleared her throat before speaking, "Nothing, I just wanted to be away from the kids while I laugh at you. Alam mo naman si Kikay, magtatampo yun kase tinawanan ko yung 'work of art' niya. Tapos si Kulit, nako, baka mawalan yun ng respeto sayo," she let out a laugh.

"Hardi-har-har, so funny," he says sarcastically, "Well, ako meron akong gustong sabihin."

"What? You need new heels?" she responds laughing at her own joke.

"No! I wanna take Amir today. I feel like mas napagtutuonan ko ng attention si Kikay na walan na ko ng oras sa kanya."

"It's about time! Pero take your makeup off before going out  baka masira career mo," she said as she continued to laugh.

They walked back to the dining area to find their children already finished with their sandwiches gone.

"Did we take that long or are you guys just matakaw?" Kylie jokingly asks.

"Matakaw like Baba!" Amir replies mocking his father.

"I'm not matakaw, Mama is," Ruru mocks in return.

"No, she isn't! Because if matakaw si Mama then, matakaw din ako," Noelle interjects defending her mother.

"Matakaw ka kaya, Kikay," Amir replies teasing his sister who was about to respond when their mother interjected.

"Okay, stop na. Kuya, go take a shower na. You and Baba will be going out today," she says instructing her son.

"How about me, Baba? Won't you take me?" Noelle asks with the puppy eyes, Ruru had to look away.

"Kikay, it's a boys day out. You're not a boy naman eh," Amir explains before walking towards the stairs to head to his room.

"But I wanna come," she says starting to pout.

"You and I will have a girls day nalang. Here in the house," Kylie bribes as Noelle looked like she was considering it, "We can play dress-up and put makeup on. Oh, and teatime. Diba you like that?"

   "And Moana?"

"Yes, and Moana," she replies with a relieved smile.

Ruru and Amir went out of the house with matching caps that day. They got in the car with Amir on the passenger's seat, happy that he was finally tall enough to see out the window. Ruru turned the radio on and connected his phone on the aux cord. 'Dusk 'til  Dawn' played and Amir's head snapped towards the radio.

"Bakit?" Ruru asked laughing a bit.

"The song. It's still in your playlist?"

"Malamang, you can hear it diba? And why would I delete this? Etong kantang to ang una mong kinanta. Nagkakabulol-bulol ka pa nuon," he replied reminiscing his three year old little Amir singing loudly on top of the kitchen island.

"Really? I don't remember that na," Amir asks.

"Siyempre, three ka palang nun. Di mo talaga ma-aalala."

"Ba, saan tayo punta?" he asked looking out the window.

"Secret, di joke lang.  We're going to the mall kase nandun na lahat pero if you wanna do something else, sabihin mo lang."

   "Sige po."

They pulled into the parking lot of a certain mall in Metro Manila as the two adjusted their matching caps. As soon as they got out of the car and locked it, Amir was expecting a bunch of girls to squeal and ask pictures from his father.

"Oh wow! It's a miracle! Walang mga girls, Ba," he says jokingly as his father pulled his cap down causing him to try to do the same but, Ruru was already running to the entrance.

Amir caught on his father and they walked into the mall. Ruru held on his son's shoulder.

"Wanna watch a movie?" Ruru asked not really knowing what to do.

"Nope, let's go get food first."

   "Bacon and burgers?"

"But Mama says only healthy stuff."

"Well, Mama's not here," Ruru said cocking his eyebrows.

And so they did. Bacon burgers, fries, sundaes, and candy. I mean, wouldn't you want him as your Baba?

That day, Amir got a few rubs on the head and bro fists from his father. They admit, they do miss each other.  Despite living in the same house, they do not spend the whole day together because of their individual activities and Ruru's outrageous work schedule.

"Ba," Amir blurts on their way home.

   "Hm?"

"You're the best dad on earth, you know that?"

"You're the corniest son ever, you know that?"

   "That's why I love you."
