Today was Maddie's first Sorcery class and she was so excited to learn magic. Starscream agreed that it was exciting but only when you got the spells right. Fauna was the one teaching the class. Today, they would be learning one of her favorite spells: Turning rocks into rubies. Fauna demonstrated how to cast the spell and let everyone else try.

Maddie tried it only to accidentally turn her first rock into an apple and her second into a potato. Fauna assured them that they could all practice at home but there were a few more spells she wanted to go over first for a test at the end of the week. When Maddie returned home, she continued to practice with Lil' Vent. But, this time, she turned the rock into a giant red tomato which Lil' Vent didn't hesitate to eat.

Meanwhile, Maddie was getting annoyed that she couldn't get the spell right. She had two days until the test and she couldn't even get this one right. Lil' Vent suggested asking a sorcerer for help with her homework. So, Maddie went to Selena's tower to ask for her help. Maddie knocked on the door and something blew up on the other side of the door. Selena opened the door, annoyed at the interruption. 

"Yes, yes! What is it?" Selena asked

"Hi, Miss Serena," Maddie said smiling.

"It's Selena. As in Suh-lee-Nah," Selena attempted to get Maddie to say it right before gasping at the sight of her amulet, "Oh, it's so good to see your amulet. Oh! I mean you. Do come in."

Maddie walked in and Selena closed the door. Maddie greeted Diaval who just mumbled to himself. 

"So, I have this Sorcery class at school, and I was hoping, since you're such a great Witch, you could help me learn a few spells," Maddie said smiling

"I am a..." Selena cleared her throat, "Royal Witch, not a schoolteacher."

"I know. But I have a test coming up and I'd be so grateful."

"Can't you see I have more important things to do?" Selena asked walking over to her workbench with so much clutter around it, "I can never find anything in this mess!"

Maddie picked up a potion bottle and got an idea, "I know! I could help clean up your workshop in return for some Magic lessons."

Selena thought to herself, "Like an apprentice."

"A what?"

"Oh, it's a very special helper. It means you get to come here every day and assist me with my spells and potions, and tidy up the place and so forth. And, in return, I'll teach you all the magic you need to know for your little test," Selena picked up her staff and conjured an apprentice hat, "So, Princess Maddie, will you be my apprentice?"

"Yes, yes, yes!" Maddie said putting the hat on.

"Alright then! We start tomorrow. Now, off you go. I have to prepare for your first lesson."

"Thank you, Miss Serena!"

"Selena!" Selena corrected opening the door for her. 

Maddie walked out and Selena slammed the door.

"Diaval! This is what we've been waiting for! I am going to brew up a potion that will make me invisible. Then, while Maddie is busy tidying up the workshop, I'll pour the invisibility potion on myself and disappear. I'll be able to swipe her amulet without her even knowing it. Once the Amulet of Avalor is mine, I can use its power to take over the kingdom. I'll be the first Witch to be Queen. 'Queen Selena the First,'" Selena said smiling, "Oh, Mother, Farther, if you could only see me now," Selena said to a painting of her parents, Erik and Christine Destler.

'We can, Selena. Why do you think we gave you this portrait?' A voice asked as a ball of light came out of it.

"Erm, for my birthday," Selena said

Erik appeared, "So your mother and I can keep an eye on you. A Witch's place is by the king's side, not on his throne."

"Oh, nothing I do is ever good enough for you, is it, father?"

'Erik, let Selena plan in peace,' Christine said coming out of the portrait too.

"Oh, Christine. Why must you encourage her?" Erik asked

Erik disappeared into the portrait again.

"You go get that amulet and make your mummy proud," Christine said pinching Selena's cheek.

She went back into the portrait.

"Oh, Diaval! We're going to show them all! Father, and especially King Primus," Selena said.

'They have always told me since I was a lass that I'm the worst Witch the kingdom's ever had. Whenever things go wrong, King Primus simply stands and claims, "It must be Selena that's to blame". Anytime I try to cast a little spell, no one thinks it turns out very well. But that won't last for long. It's time for me to make my claim. Soon everyone will know my name!' Selena tried a spell but it just blew a bubble and burst, making her a little wet.

'All I need to do is swipe that amulet,' she made a fake one appear, 'then I will show them who I am, you bet. Once I have the jewel, I can use its power to take the king's crown, it'll be my finest hour!'

She had made a crown appear and placed it on her head and the amulet around her neck. She made a stool and pillow float and made it into a throne.

'They can tell me I'm no good and call me second rate, but soon they'll see I'm meant to be, Queen Selena the Great!'

She floated down a corridor. Down the stairs was a model of the castle along with some toy guards. Selena made the guards come to life.

'When I'm the Queen, everyone will bow and only do the things Queen Selena will allow. Every spell I cast will always go as planned and those who used to tease me will be at my command!' Selena sang smiling before looking at her toy guards, "Thank you, boys."

'One trick will show them all Selena isn't second rate. We kiss the ring of our new Queen! Queen Selena! Queen Selena the Great!' the guards sang.

There was a knock at the door and Selena fell to the floor. Bruno appeared.

"Selena, all this noise is disturbing the King's supper, please keep it down!" Bruno said before leaving.

Diaval joined Selena on the floor

'They can tell me I'm no good and call me second rate, but soon they'll see I'm meant to be... Queen Selena the Great...' Selena sang

the two just sat there when the castle suddenly blew up, "Merlin's Mushrooms."

So, the next morning, Maddie came for her first lesson. But first, she was asked to tidy up while Selena finished the invisibility potion. Selena put the last ingredient in and the potion was finished. But the cauldron started shaking and something shot in the air. It exploded making confetti rain down. She decided to continue it later. So, time to teach Maddie. She wanted to know how to turn a rock into a ruby.

It was easy enough. Selena showed Maddie what to do and she got it right. And that's when Bruno walked in, asking what Maddie was doing in there. Maddie explained that she was learning magic. Bruno thought that was wonderful and that she needed to teach Selena some when she was done. Ignoring the insult, Selena asked Bruno what he wanted. Bruno told her that Primus needed her. Selena seemed nervous at the mention of Primus.

The three went into the courtyard where Primus and Sarayah were waiting for them. Primus revealed that they'd be having a royal guest stay at the castle, King Magnus, and asked Selena to change the gargoyles into something more inviting. Selena suggested golden horses which Primus agreed to. Maddie gave Selena her magic staff and she tried the spell. But it turned into a real flying horse!

Selena wanted to try again but Primus told her not to bother and that no one is as gifted as her father. So, they'd just clean up the rest of the palace and hope King Magnus doesn't look up. So, everyone left and Sarayah told Maddie not to be late for dinner as King Magnus was coming. The two just went back to Selena's tower. Selena just let Maddie work while she was annoyed at herself for getting that spell wrong. But being compared to her father was what really made her feel awful. She knew she would never be like her father but she always tried in any way possible. 

"Sorry your spell didn't work right," Maddie said

"What?" Selena asked suddenly knocked out of her trance, "Oh. You missed a spot! By the potion cabinet."

Maddie went over to it and continued to sweep.

"So, your father was a Royal Sorcerer too?" Maddie asked her

"You haven't heard about Erik Destler?" Selena asked pointing to the portrait, "The greatest Royal Sorcerer whoever waved a wand? Saved your granddad's life nine and a half times." 

"I'm sure you're just as good as he was."

Selena hummed, "I... I haven't saved anyone's life. Not even once. Not even half!"

While sweeping, Maddie accidentally knocked over a potion, making her feel funny. Selena looked over just as Maddie turned into a little blue lizard. Panicking, Selena assured her that everything would be fine and to hold still. Selena stood back, grabbed her staff, and transformed Maddie back to her usual self. 

"Thank you!" Maddie said hugging Selena who tensed up.

"Well, that's an easy spell," Selena said gently pushing Maddie away," I learned it the first week of Sorvery School."

Maddie hummed, "You're so good at magic, Miss Serena. Why couldn't you turn the gargoyles into golden horses?"

"Oh, I don't know," Selena said standing up, "Every time I get around King Primus, I get a bit, well..."

"Well, what?"

"Nervous! There, I said it!"

"Well, I'm going to find a way to show Dad that you're a great Witch," Maddie said taking Selena's hand

"And... why would you do that?" Selena asked taking her hand back

"Because you're my friend."

"Friend?" That was new for Selena.

"Anyway, I'd better clean up for dinner. See you tomorrow, Miss Serena," Maddie said leaving

"It's... Selena," Selena said still in a state of shock.

Maddie cleaned up and went to dinner where she met King Magnus. He bragged a lot. Mostly about his kingdom. Primus really did not like King Magnus being there and he was trying to be polite the entire time. He didn't like all the bragging. At the mention of his Royal Sorceress, Madisyn, Maddie spoke up about Selena being just as great as his Royal Witch. King Magnus asked if Maddie was talking about Erik's eldest daughter.

Primus said yes but commented that Selena wasn't as great as her father. Maddie disagreed, saying that Selena was just as great and that she should put on a show for all of them. Primus didn't think it was a good idea but King Magnus thought it was. It was soon agreed that Selena would put on a show for everyone the night after tomorrow. So, Maddie broke the news to her. Selena agreed it was great because this would be her first magic show for royalty.

But now she'd have to perform for two kings. And Selena knew it was going to go badly when she gets nervous when performing magic for royalty. But, Maddie offered to help prepare for her performance if she helps her prepare for her test tomorrow as it's on the same day. Selena agreed and started teaching her everything she needed to know while Maddie helped her prepare for the magic show.

The day was ready to come to an end when Maddie pointed something out to Selena. She had just cleaned a stane from her book for the invisibility potion and revealed two more ingredients that Selena was missing. Maddie left and Selena finished the potion and it worked! Now Selena could execute her plan! While celebrating, she noticed something on the table. It was the rubies Maddie made that she put into a heart. Selena was surprised at the little gift. This was all so new to her. She didn't know how to feel about all the kindness Maddie has given her in the span of two days.

"She... she made this for me?" Selena asked still surprised

'Look at that lovely gift Maddie left you, Selena,' Erik said appearing on her shoulder, "If you steal her amulet, dear, think how sad she will be. How could you do that to your new friend?"

"Oh, don't listen to him, Selena," Christine said appearing on her other shoulder, "You can make this your final trick at the big show tomorrow. Use the potion to turn yourself invisible, swipe the amulet, and take over the kingdom."

"I can make up my own mind, you know," Selena said walking away

Christine and Erik turned into their normal size.

"I hope you do the right thing, Selena," Erik said.

"No, no, do the wrong thing," Christine said, "Mummy loves you."

Selena left as her parents waved goodbye. The next day, Maddie was ready for her sorcery test. Everyone was given a  rock, a line, and an old shoe. These were for the spells everyone was told to learn. And Maddie got them all right. She turned the rock into a ruby, the line into an emerald, and the shoe into a glass slipper. Maddie was excited to show her mother the gold star she got for passing the test.

She even gave credit to Selena for helping her, proving that she really did know her magic. The trumpets sounded as King Magnus walked into the room, asking Primus when they would see this great Witch of his. Maddie told him that it would be now and went to go get Selena. Selena and Maddie set up for the magic show. Noticing the lizard potion again, Maddie moved it out of the way so there wasn't another mishap.

Before the show began, Selena whispered to Diaval that she was going through with her plan. Her last trick was to use the invisibility potion on herself and take Maddie's amulet so she could finally take over the kingdom. Bruno announced that it was time for Selena's show and the curtain opened, revealing her and Maddie. Selena said hello and mentioned the invisibility potion which would be the final trick of the evening.

Primus was already dreading this, believing that it was going to be a disaster. But first, Selena made Maddie's rabbit, Lil' Vent, appear. But it didn't impress Magnus who bragged that his Sorceress once made a whole zoo appear once. Now she knew she had competition, Selena tried to make Lil' Vent fly but she said the spell wrong and made him bounce violently. He soon stopped but Selena became very, very nervous now she made her first big mistake.

Seeing how nervous Selena had become, Maddie thought of something that would hopefully impress everyone. She took the lizard potion out from Selena's bag and pretended to stumble, accidentally pouring some on herself, turning her into a lizard. Everyone watched it happen and started to panic. But Selena stayed calm and turned Maddie back to her old self with ease. Sarayah and Primus ran over to the two, Sarayah checking on Maddie and Primus went to Selena to talk with her.

"That was magnificent! You saved Maddie's life," Primus said smiling, "Thank you, Selena."

"I... saved her life?" Selena asked maybe just as shocked as everyone else was.

Primus turned to King Magnus, "Did you see that? That's our Royal Witch, the greatest in the land."

"That she is," King Magnus agreed, clapping.

"What happened?" Selena asked Maddie

"I'm just clumsy, I guess. But it turned out to be a great trick," Maddie said smiling

Selena gasped, "you did it on purpose!"

"It's the one trick I knew you could do, no matter how nervous you were. And it worked! Everyone finally saw how great you are."

 So, Primus then asked if Selena could show everyone her final trick: the potion. Remembering that, Selena was ready to use it. But, just as she was ready to use it to take over the kingdom, she heard what her parents said the night before. So, Selena finally made a choice. Selena decided to demonstrate it on Lil' Vent instead of herself. And, once again, it worked perfectly. And King Magnus finally witnessed something that even his Sorceress had never done before. Everyone clapped for Maddie and Selena. The two went back to Selena's tower where Selena was happy about the successful night.

"What a performance! Did you see the looks on their faces?" Selena asked Maddie, smiling.

"Here. This is for you," Maddie said smiling, handing her a scroll

"What is it?" Selena asked taking it

"I got a gold star today, and I thought you should get one too."

Selena opened it to reveal a gold star certificate with her name on it. It wasn't much but it made Selena smile. 

"Thanks for all your help," Maddie said taking her hat off, "it was fun being your apprentice."

Selena took the hat from Maddie and opened the door to leave. 

"Goodnight, Miss Serena," Maddie smiled, closing Selena's door

Maddie closed the door, leaving Selena and Diaval alone.

"It's uh..." Selena just smiled, not bothering to correct her, "Yeah, goodnight, Princess Maddie."

Diaval squawked at her annoyed. This was her chance to take the amulet and she blew it.

"Oh, Diaval, we can always take over the kingdom tomorrow," Selena assured him.

Maybe the evil Witch has a soft spot for the Princess. But this gold star was definitely going on her wall.
