"I swear to god if you don't get your lazy ass out of this bed, I'm going to pull you by the legs out of it." My best friend, Kayleigh Samuels said at the end of my bed - and I rolled over, pulling my pillow over my ears ― trying to drown out the noice of her voice.
"Go away, Leigh. It's to early for this shit," I groan out in annoyance, my morning voice rasping and she grunted before pulling my covers away from my body ― leading me to let out a high pitch whine.
"Get your lazy ass out of this bed now, we've got a case ― and I know you won't like it, but we've got no choice." She says, and I turn to look at her ― finally ripping the pillow off of my head and sitting in a kneeling position.
"Where is it?" I questioned her, and she gnawed on her bottom lip ― whenever Kayleigh gets nervous, I know it's bad. "Kayleigh Amanda Samuels, tell me right now where this case is at." I warn her and she knows when I use her full name, I mean it seriously.
"Lanercost." She says, and my airways seem to clog up, I felt tears spring to my eyes and I felt like I was going to go into a panic attack. "Hey, Selene! Listen to me, we just have to do this case ― and then you never have to set foot in that town again, do you hear me?" She questions, grabbing my arms ― trying to calm me down.
"But." I was about to say but she covers my mouth.
"Remember, I'm right by your side ― if they want to interrogate you again, fine but you were no where near this crime scene and you were eliminated last time because of the forensic evidence." She warns me and I take a deep breath ― knowing she was right.
"Okay, I'll do it ― but as soon as this case is over. I'm out of there, no more. I'm never going back to that small town again." I warn her and she nods as I flip my legs out of the bed and head towards my wardrobe to get my go bag. "How many do they have now, along with the other victims from seven years ago?" I question, not looking at her as I hear the pages of the file flip.
"Eight victims, including an attempted." She says and I turn to look at her.
"That doesn't fit right, he never leaves anyone alive. Why this one, what's the name?" I question and she looks down at the file. Her lips parted as she breathed in and out before finally telling me the name.
"She hasn't been seen in almost a decade, Ellis Brown." She says, and my eyebrows furrow and I slam my hand against the wall. There was no way we could talk to her, because she reported the assault and then disappeared off the face of the earth.
"Jesus Christ." I mutter, running my fingers through my dirty blonde hair. "Go pack your shit Leigh, we're heading to Lanercost." I say, waving my hand dismissively as she puts the file on my dresser ― letting me pick it up and flick through the pages that contained the victims names, ME reports and descriptions of the attackers from other witnesses.

The car was going fast, as we sped into the small town. I was looking out of the window as Kayleigh drove past multiple different signs, "You okay?" Kayleigh asks me and I turn to look at her while a sigh comes out my parted lips.
"Not entirely," I say, running my fingers through my hair as I pull a cigarette out of my packet in my pocket. "I know, hey! Don't look at me like that," I groaned as I saw the disgusted look that she was giving me.
"I hate when you smoke, it's disgusting." She says, her nose turning up in disgust. I rolled my eyes as I flicked the bud of it out of the window, and rolled it back up and turned on my seat to look at her.
"We're here." She says, as we pull up in front of the police station, I close my eyes as memories flooded back to me but I ignored the rushing feeling of just wanting to get out of here as fast as I could and stepped out of the car - ignoring the cops that had let their eyes drift over too me.
"Is that Selene Carter?" A random cop asked, surprised to even see the 27 year old girl back in Lanercost. Kayleigh linked her arm with me before giving the officer a hard glare, telling them basically to 'fuck off' before we walked into the station.
"We're looking for Chief Carter." Kayleigh says leaning against the window of the reception area of the police station. The receptionist that had to be in her late 50's looked up, and was shocked to see Selene.
"Selene Carter," She sneered in disgust, and I rolled my eyes as I clenched my jaw - I could see Kayleigh was loosing her temper. She slammed her hand down on the table, shocking me and the receptionist.
"We're not here to let you take the piss out of my best friend, we're here-" She didn't get far before an all to familiar cough radiated through the front reception area - we both turned around, only to be face with the one fact I refused to see after what had happened seven years ago.
"Brother." I sneered, lowly and he looks at me with guilty eyes. Good.
