chapter twenty four - ruof ytnewt retpahc

It felt like someone shoved sand down my throat, it scratching from my burning vocal chords. I was unsure if my deafening scream was audible because of the mono buzz ringing through my ears.

I desired Alice's indifference view on death. She was used to it; she was surrounded by it every day. It was almost like she was immune to it.

Jessie wasn't.

My heart felt as if it was defrosting and the numbness was vanishing. It was pumping now. Faster. Harder. Thud, thud, thud. Too fast. Too hard. The buzzing noise increased and my lungs ached. So much screaming.

It was hard to comprehend what was going on. This was all happening so fast. But my mind was processing it so slow. Thud, thud, thud. I blinked twice, regaining my vision. Thud, thud, thud. My heart rate felt like rapid fire. Thud, thud, thud.

We were falling faster. Fear was balled up in my chest. Thud, thud, thud. Then a bolt of shock struck my head and I snapped out of the human side, Alice regaining control.

Ultimate strength pumped from my heart, travelling through my blood and this energy exploded within. My body shifted in the air and I was running down the glass building now.

The wind picked up and my hair was thrashing side to side. I pumped my legs faster, my arms slicing through the air. Thud, thud, thud. Soon, I quickened, zooming down the windows. Gravity was pressed against my back, the feeling similar when sprinting downhill. Thud, thud, thud.

The human ants increased their size, still casually walking along the city streets below us. The sound of angry shouts and car honks amplified. My lungs thinned, and I propelled the speed of my legs. My feet were silent, toes gingerly bounding off the glass. Energy was swirling down my thighs. Thud, thud, thud. I was gaining closer towards the ground.

It was almost ten feet away. I took two swift steps, and leaped off the glass, landing onto the cement. Pain shot through my thighs for a split second before disappearing. My breath instantly settled to a normal rate. My chest was just pumping a little more rapidly. That was it. I should have been exhausted.

But I wasn't.

People screamed at my presence and I leaped up again, higher than normal humans could, and landed in front of the meteor with a cement shattering impact.

I stared down the bitten man and he made a demon screech I had grown too fond of, and charged towards me. He threw us both into a shop window. Glass flew and I yelped, the sharp fragments digging on my landing. The shoppers darted out of the deli, dropping their bags and crashing past the door.

My attacker scrambled up, and I did the same. I barley dodged his punch, his fist a collection of merely bones as the breeze brushed past my check. His fists ripping like bullets, I backed into the cashier and ducked, knocking him from his feet. Before he crumbled, I drove my heel to the side of his head, the coldness sweeping over him before the ground.

I leaped through the broken glass window and watched the crowd part away from the meteor, Isaac and Grim staring down the demons.

I walked steadily towards them, and then suddenly someone bowled me over from the right. They slammed my stomach onto the cement, pushing asphalt into my mouth.

My head throbbed as it smacked off, a low moan dragging.

"You're under arrest for the murder of..."

My ears twitched at the sound of metal clinking together.

"You're shitting me."

Anger writhed through my body and I screamed, summoning the unknown strength and pushed the police off, pinning the man down so we had switched spots. "Handcuffing me isn't a smart move," I snarled, pressing the officer's face down. Handcuffing his wrists, I let the officer scream into his shoulder, buzzing his friends for backup.

"Crazy bitch," I told the policeman.

I quickly rolled off of him and just as I stood, I widened my gaze, my boots crunching on top of the glass. The crowds had evaded the area, a large circle made by moronic pedestrians. Didn't they fucking know anything about danger?

Grim opened his hand and his scythe grew from the air, the curled blade at the end gleaming. Isaac clenched his hands, and I felt his hot blood radiating this energy, this energy that began to build in my body.

I removed both my swords, swinging them in my hands. Cars pulled up around us, men bending on the knee with guns pointed at us and the demons. "Grim," I said.

He opened his mouth, the demon souls flew out in clouds of fog. They slowly drifted upwards and it silenced everyone into this moment of pure fascination. Grim let out a harsh breath and the fog swarmed, it building almost a translucent barrier between us and the rest of the people.

"They can still see us," Isaac whispered.

I grinned. "Then let's give them a show."

Instantly demons spilled out of the meteor. They caged us in all directions and a flicker of human emotion snuck into the front and my fear escalated.

I whirled my head and noticed one behind, advancing faster. A spark of terror pulled at my chest before getting sucked into the internal darkness.

I spun, clipping my heel to it's forehead. I sensed their swift arms and nimble legs, knowing their moves before they could begin. Horrific fascination must've seized the crowd.

One had removed its own arm and made a swing towards my stomach. I jumped back and swung a leg to it's throat. Bending into a bridge, it's knuckles sailed above my face, just missing the bridge of my nose. I caught it's arm and drove my boot into it's spine, it's skull hitting the cement, lost for air.

I spun my sword like helicopters, and leaped over them, heads clattering just as my feet hit the floor. My swords were swift as needles as I sewn a row of demons together, before sending my heel straight to their spines to crack 'em in half. I scooped one umbrella off the ground and shoved it inside the fragile bones of the demon and opened the umbrella. The fabric strength of the umbrella pushed the layer of skin outwards, and the demon screeched in pain before it exploded in moist rubber and broken bones. Isaac grabbed a demon by the face and smashed it into the cement, grinding it into pieces. Grim clubbed them with his scythe and knocked them cold.

Knees ready for the next attacker, I was awaken by the silence. Demons laid either unconscious or dead, never have I been so unsure. My breath was raged, uneven. My heart beats took a drag. Satisfaction settled within my stomach, alive and well. The hunger for destruction gone.

I looked over the cement, demon blood splashed across the cement and bones were scattered in a mess.

Grim lowered his scythe and we examined the cracked meteor. I hooked my swords back on. A bad feeling swelled in my mind. I picked up a bone and was able to crush it within my fingers. "They were too easy to kill," I said.

Isaac placed his hands on his knees with a huff, his body shrinking to normal. "O-Or maybe Lord Death has gotten weaker," Isaac offered.

"No," Grim said. "She's right. He has only gotten stronger. Something is up."

I peered into the huge crack. "Demons don't even come out of meteors."

"I know, Lord Death got it all wrong. Clearly dinosaurs did," Isaac said.

Grim tightened his grip on the rock. I stopped trudging through the mess.

Isaac frowned and glanced around. "What? My second grade teacher said they came out of the meteors. And evolved into cavemen and then humans. It's science."

"No, it's how you get an idiot to reach his full potential," Grim said.

A roar of applause came from the crowd. For a second I thought they were applauding Grim for his retort. They weren't. I didn't realize he had lifted the barrier and now we were exposed.

Phones were thrown in our gaze, cameras zoomed in on our bad sides and adoring smiles kissed our dirty faces.

We were showered in "Thank you's" and "Justice" and "We owe you".

But one word that struck my chest was "Hero."

I gave Grim a look and a shadow cast over us. People gasped and I grabbed Isaac by the shirt, Grim huddling close. There was a blur of black feathered wings and in seconds we were in the air, rising higher above the crowd. I watched more lights go off, the sirens now wailing as cops drove in too late.

"What's wrong with these people?" I shouted, clinging to Levi's waist.

Several gunshots went off and my eyes widened at Levi's head snapping back with a howl of pain. One moment we were up and then the next we were down, spiraling toward dots of colour. I lost the warmth of a body, fingers grasping only air now and I was falling, alone, drowning in gravity's pull. I saw the flat roof waiting at our death and it was a struggle to not close my eyes.

Then I felt someone catch my arm and the swoosh of one wing flapping and was suddenly thrown to the side, my body impacting the roof and limbs flopping to a rough roll. I laid slump on the hard cement, a groan rumbling up my lips.

Wiggling my feet, my arms and then shifting my head to the side, I slowly sat up, wincing at the sting in my knees.

The rest of the boys were okay, knees trembling as they stood. Sucking in the pain with a quick intake of breath, I pushed myself to my feet and wobbled a bit. What had just happened?

Quickly spotting Levi's black jacket that matched his beautiful wings, I stumbled towards him and rested on the ledge.

"Stupid humans," Levi muttered, sitting hunched on the edge of the roof. "Shoot anything that isn't of their kind. Anything that's remotely better than them they see as a threat."

I brushed my fingers through his wings and he flinched. The more feathers I pushed aside, the more holes I found.

"You need to rest," I said. I glanced at Grim and he nodded. "I know where we can go." He let Levi sling an arm over his shoulder and I did the same on the other side.

Isaac gave us a weak smile. "So much for being their friendly neighborhood hero."

An icy feeling shot down my spine. Hero?
