Part 5
"What!" she turned around in shock. "I can't do that! I wouldn't even know where to start."
"It is okay. You don't have to worry, I'll be right here" he said reassuringly.
She was still a little scared, but she trusted that if she did anything wrong he would correct it right away. She began adjusting the sound right away. Tachibana was taken aback by this. How is she able to balance the sound already? She only saw me do this once. Although this shocked him, what surprised him the most was how fast she did it.
When she was done, she turned to Tachibana with an unsure expression. She was unsure if she had done it right and was waiting for him to confirm her fears. "How does it sound? Did I do alright?"
He was stunned. Does she really think that she messed up? The sound was perfect! She was able to balance the sound perfectly and she was able to clean up the background noise as well. Something that Tachibana hadn't even showed her how to do yet. "Well what do you think? How does it sound to you?"
"Well..." she was nervous about stating her opinion, because she was just a student "I think the balance is okay, the sound is clear, but the guitar seems to be out of tune with the rest of the group. I want to fix it, but I don't know how to fix pitch" she said this cautiously, because she didn't want to overstep her position or offend anyone.
Before Tachibana responded, he listened to the group again. He hadn't noticed it before, but she was right. His eyes widened. He then got on the intercom and told the guitarist that he was flat and should re-tune his instrument. Dawn was surprised by his actions; she didn't realize that he would tell the musician to correct his tuning.
When the session ended, Tachibana approached Dawn and asked "How were you able to balance the sound so fast? You only saw me do it the one time."
"Well... I just paid close attention while you were doing it and... I just tried my best not to screw up" she replied a little too honestly.
"How did you know the guitarist was out of tune? Didn't you have your hands full just adjusting the balance?"
"Yeah... but... the sound just didn't seem right. When I tried to figure it out I noticed that he was the one making it sound awkward."
Tachibana was really surprised by this. He had never seen anyone do what she had just done. She is a prodigy! After questioning her, he let her go back to the jobs she had been assigned.
"Thank you for letting me come back and observe you today. I really learnt a lot. Thank you!" she said with a smile and a little bow, and then left.
After she left he collapsed into his chair, called Toma and asked "How old is Dawn?"
Toma laughed "She is fifteen."
"Fifteen! Are you sure?" he asked with shock.
"Yes, I'm sure" Toma smiled. "Don't you think she is pretty amazing? She picks things up so fast that even I was amazed."
"Yeah" he paused "Wait, how did you know?"
Toma laughed some more "I just had a feeling. Tell me, what do you think about her doing some recording tech work? I know you are a little short handed down there right now."
Tachibana paused and thought about it. "You know, I think that is a great idea. She would be perfect."
