Chapter 10: Last Ditch Effort
A/N: Hey guys, been sometime since I worked on this. I've sort of just been going at my own pace, but I think it's time I catch up on more chapters for this story. I'll do my best to get the next chapters out quicker for you all. Thank you for the support. Hope you guys enjoy.
After giving what you now think was an estranged and somewhat messy speech, you were riding up a lift back to the top of the wall after heading down to rearm and and refuel. As you rode the lift up, you were leaned against the wood railing with your arms in your pockets as you looked down and watched soldiers rush about to get ready for the final operation. As you stood in silence with your hands in your pockets, a voice spoke up and caught your attention.
"Don't worry, Y/N. I'm sure thing's will work out." You heard as you turned to the other side of the lift and saw Sasha riding up with you, as the two of you were alone for the time being. "That speech was pretty impressive. Everyone got riled up and you managed to persuade a few others to come back. Nice job!" She praised you while your cheeks turned a light shade of red and you turned away.
"R-Really? Now that I think about it, some of the stuff I said sounded pretty stupid and harsh...I didn't really consider the feelings of those who had seen the worse of it. Do I...have the right to look at them like that, as if they're wrong for wanting to run...?" You said as this thought stirred around in your mind.
"Umm....I..." Sasha started as you glanced over to her as a breeze blew by. "...I don't really know the answer to that myself...If I'm being honest, I'm pretty scared to head back out also." Sasha said while nervously scratching the back of her head.
"I see..." You muttered as you looked away.
"But, I don't think you're in the wrong either..." She said as she turned towards you with an understanding look on her face. "You were there the day Titans first breached the walls...you were there to join the advance team and the only one to come back alive...We all saw the face you had when you came back...It was a face that we couldn't imagine what it had been through..." You suddenly felt Sasha take your left hand out from your pocket and hold it in between hers as you turned your head in confusion. "...You've been through so much already at such a young age...We all have..." She looked you in the eyes as she continued. "...but I think it's safe to say that you've been through the thick of things more than any of us here today have ever been through, so you can't help but feel the way you do. You've done so much and conquered a fear most of us can't...So you shouldn't second guess your own feelings, because its your feelings that you carry with you when you fight. You're the bravest person I've ever met, and you give me the courage to look those things in the face and have the strength to stand my ground. These feelings that you planted in me, I'll always cherish them..." She said as the lift came to stop and the setting sun shined against you two with the wind dying down.
A few moments passed and you were still stunned by what Sasha had just said to you. However, after moments went by, she began to blush heavily as she realized she still held your hand and said something that she thought was so cheesy. Instantly bashful, she let go of your hand and turned away.
"S-Sorry! I-I-I don't know what I was thinking...!" She was huffing breaths and her cheeks were a deep red you just stared at you hand.
"N-No, what you said helped..." You said while using the same hand she held to scratch the back of your head nervously.
"Cadet L/N! You're needed immediately for mission briefing and squad placement." An officer yelled from across the wall.
"Y-Yes, sir!" You said as you stepped off the lift and began to walk away, but stopped a few feet from Sasha who was still nervously and embarrassingly shaking on the lift. "Hey, Sasha..." You called as she glanced up at you. "Everyone calls you a goofball and airhead, but you say the smartest things sometimes..." She grew even more bashful before realizing what you said.
"Huh? Only sometimes?" She said as she was a little shocked and you chuckled while turning around and smiling at her while giving a thumbs up.
"Thanks! I'll see you after all this is over!" You said before running off as Sasha was still stunned by what you said, but smiled as her heart continued to beat rapidly. "...please, survive." You thought as you clenched the hand she held tightly and continued to run across the wall to where the Commander and main attack teams were located.
After leaving Sasha to join the main force for the operation, you regrouped with Eren, Mikasa and Armin while Commander Pyxis was briefing his officers of their roles. You felt some discomfort and average amounts of pain coming from your arm, and as you walked up to them, Mikasa noticed you rubbing the arm that was injured.
"Are you okay, Y/N?" Mikasa asked with some worry as you looked towards her. "You shouldn't push yourself. You've already done so much..." She said as you smiled and shook your head.
"No, I'm fine. Besides, we're all hands on board right now and Trost needs every man we can spare if we're going to save it." You said in reassurance as you looked out to the burning town below. "Besides, I'm not about to abandon my friends and let them dive head first in a life or death mission just because of some flesh wound." You grinned as you gave a thumbs up with the injured arm you had as the three of them just decided to not push you any further on the topic.
"Eren, I'm sorry..." Armin spoke up as this caught the three of yours attention. "...I ended up making you responsible for everything." He said in regards to making Eren the key factor of the operation.
"It's like I said before. You have the ability to find the right answer. I believe in that." Eren reassured Armin.
"Eren, I'm going to--" Mikasa tried to speak to Eren, but he interrupted her.
"Don't tell me you're going to come with me. You've been assigned to the decoy team." Eren said, catching Mikasa off guard.
"But I can't leave you alone...If you're alone, you'll--" Mikasa tried convince Eren to let her go, but he stopped her once more.
"Enough!" Eren was about to headbutt her, but the memory of what happened before with you and him when he butt heads with Mikasa, flashed in his mind and he stopped himself while holding a piercing look towards her. "I'm not your little brother or a child...I told you that!" Eren said as Mikasa grew a dejected look upon her face, while you shook your head in disappointment behind Eren.
"Ackerman and L/N, join the elite force protecting Jaeger. We need your skill." You all turned to see Captain Dietrich standing to the side as Mikasa had a thankful look now, while you merely nodded in acknowledgement. "Let's go...It's time!" He said as this marked the beginning of the final operation to take back Trost.
The four of you broke off and ran in different directions, Armin joining the resupply team while you three ran to join the elite squad and head to the rendezvous point where you would head back to Trost. The elite force was made up of three squads, belonging to the Captains Dietrich, Rico, and Mitabi. As you all ran along the left side of the wall, you continued to look out to the burning city while Dietrich spoke up.
"A top-secret human weapon, was it? As long as you can seal that hole, it doesn't matter. Our priority is to protect you. We're counting on you." Dietrich said while leading the pack.
"Yes, sir!" Eren responded with a jumpy almost nervous look on his face.
"Eren, are you feeling okay?" Mikasa once again checked on him as he closed his eyes in irritation.
"Yeah!" Was all he responded with as you glanced back and caught Captain Rico staring at Eren with a troubled look.
"Eren..." Mikasa tried checking on him once more, but he cut her off.
"I said I'm fine! Much better than when we were surrounded." Eren said as he was referring to the previous, nerve wracking incident with the Garrison as Rico came between the two.
"We aren't playing house here, Jaeger." Rico reprimanded him.
"I didn't mean..." He tried to clear up what he meant, but she Captain Mitabi spoke first.
"I cant believe we have to leave humanity's fate up to a spoiled kid like you." Mitabi shared his unease and nervous feelings about this operation as well as Mikasa glared at the two of them.
"Huh? That so? I can't believe we have to leave up to you old farts to back us up while Eren saves all our asses. What a pain." You said in a demeaning tone towards the Captains.
"What was that?" Rico glared at you while you ran ahead and Dietrich turned his head back.
"Enough, guys! We'll soon reach the shortest route to the boulder." Dietrich said as you all looked ahead to the location of where the boulder sat. "I'm not seeing any Titans...Everyone must have succeeded in luring them away." He said as you noticed a large mass of small dots on the other side of Trost, which you knew were the other decoy teams that were hoarding all the Titans.
"Listen, Jaeger." Rico spoke up and caught his attention. "During this operation, more than just a few will die. For you. They will be our fellows, ranked both above and below us. As soldiers, they're prepared to die, of course. But they are not pawns without a voice. They have names and families. And all the feelings that those entail. Alyosha, Dominic, Phine, Isabel, Ludwig, Martina, Guido, Hans...They're all humans as alive as either of us. I've known some of them since my trainee days. And today, many will die for you. You have a responsibility to ensure that their deaths will mean something. No matter what happens. Never let yourself forget that. And be prepared to die for that responsibility." Rico said as you were in awe of what she had just said.
"Right!" Eren replied in understanding of what she meant.
"Hey, Captain Rico..." You called her as you gave her an irritated look. "...If shit hits the fan, I'm blaming you for bad luck." You said as she glared back at you.
"Shut the hell up and keep running, Cadet." She said as you scoffed and continued ahead as you finally reached the rendezvous point and turned to jump.
"Right here. Let's go!" Dietrich yelled as you all leaped off the wall and immediately flew over buildings once more using the ODM gear.
Rico stayed behind and covered one ear before raising her other hand and aiming a pistol up to the air. Once the trigger was pulled, a green smoke round fired into the sky, signaling the operation was finally taking place. As you leaped and flew from building to building, you watched as Eren frantically flew pass you and rushed towards the boulder. Not wanting anything to happen to him before hand, you sped up and watched his back as he came closer and closer to the area, before he slid under a walk and flung himself to the air. Seeing this action, you made the assumption he was about to do something, and broke off for a building nearby as there was an explosion of light and thunder struck nearby as everyone who could see the light, watched in astonishment of the power they were bearing witness to. Still not use to the sight, you watched with shaken nerves as a body formed from hot air and the Titan that protected you before once again reemerged with furious green eyes that almost seemed to glow. After a few more moments, there was an explosion that made you cover up as hot air blew through the area and a smoke stack rose from where Eren transformed. You and the other elite force members watched carefully as from the smoke, a foot crushed the earth below and Eren in his now Titanic form, unleashed a furious roar as this was the moment to bear witness to.
"Alright, let's get that boulder moving and---huh...?" You stopped yourself when you noticed Eren was just facing the boulder for a few moments, before suddenly turning around to the building you were on. "What are you doing? Why are you turning around?" You thought as you followed his gaze and looked to see Mikasa was perched on the same building as you, and Eren was slowly approaching.
In a moment that it took to take in another breath, you gasped as Eren suddenly flung a fist and crashed it towards Mikasa as there was a large crash of debris and his hand to blow up into chunks. Luckily enough, Mikasa was able to snap out of her confusion and jump away to dodge the killing blow, but the flying roof debris managed to cut her cheek as she crashed into a chimney next to her.
"Mikasa!" You yelled in worry, but in an instant jumped into the air and boosted up using your gas as Eren slammed his other hand onto the spot you once stood on. "What the hell, man!? What's wrong!? Gah, I knew that old hag jinxed us!" You yelled as you landed next to Mikasa as she forced herself up, but you noticed he was reeling his left fists back once more for an attack.
"Ackerman! L/N!" Dietrich yelled as he tried to run to you two, but you and Mikasa leaped off the building in time as Eren smashed his hand on the roof once more and you both zipped up to his eyes.
"What's wrong with you!? You're gonna freaking kill us!" You yelled in rage and confusion.
"Hey, you two, stop! Get away from him!" Dietrich yelled for the two of you to move away.
"Eren, don't you know who we are? It's us, Mikasa! Y/N! Your family! You have to use that boulder to seal the hole!" Mikasa tried to make Eren remember who the two of you were.
"The mission has failed..." Rico thought while loading a red smoke round into her flare pistol. "...I knew there wasn't any secret weapon." She had her assumptions confirmed as she fired a red smoke round into the air, signaling the mission had gone awry.
"Hey! Cut this shit out already, Eren!" You yelled in his face.
"Eren, you're human! You're...!" Mikasa couldn't finish what she was going to say as Dietrich noticed his first fist had healed and was shaking.
"Move, you two! Hurry!" Dietrich yelled as the two of you jumped back towards him in time as Eren brought his fist to his face and punched himself while roaring in pain, the force being enough to blow his hand up again and greatly damage his face as he stumbled back and slouched against the boulder unconscious, steam rising from all his wounds.
"What the? He's just like any other stupid Titan!" Mitabi said in frustration of everything that happened as you all stood on a building nearby.
"Eren!" Mikasa yelled to try and get him back to his senses.
"Captain Ian! Two Titans approaching from the front! A ten meter and a six meter class." One of Dietrich's men yelled as you were all now really nervous.
"Another from the rear, as well! One twelve meter class coming this way!" Another soldier yelled as you turned to see the Titan that was spotted approaching the area.
"Ian, we must retreat! Look at him! No way is that hole getting sealed!" Mitabi tried telling Dietrich to abandon the mission.
"Yeah...We have no choice but to leave him here." Rico agreed with the suggestion as well, while you and Mikasa glared at the two of them for their wanting to leave.
"You assholes...You're going to give up here when our one chance is to stop this whole thing is so close!? What's wrong with you!?" You yelled while walking towards them.
"That 'chance' you're talking about just tried to kill you! You're as deluded as the Commander is for thinking that there was any chance of this working! Shut the hell up and do as your told!" Rico yelled back as you drew your blade and pointed it towards her, which worried Dietrich.
"I'll cut your tongue out and serve it to those Titans, bitch!" You said with hate in your voice as Captain Mitabi grabbed a hold of you to hold your back.
"Stop! Realize the reality of things! He's a Titan! He'll just go around eating people!" Mitabi tried deescalating the situation. "Hey, what's wrong? Give the order!" Mitabi said while trying to hold you back. "Ian, it wasn't your fault! The plan was a long shot. Everyone knew that. It was worth trying, and we took our best shot! Come on! Our squads will climb the walls." He said as you had enough of it.
"Let me go! Dammit!" You yelled as you banged your head against his and the two of you staggered back as you and Mikasa drew your blades. "You're not going anywhere...!" You said as the two of you were about to rush Rico and Mitabi, but Dietrich came in between you all.
"Wait! Wait...Calm down, you two." Dietrich said as you were both confused as he turned towards them. "Rico, your squad will handle the twelve meter Titan behind us. Mitabi's squad and mine will take the two in front." He said as the two Captains were beyond shocked.
"What?" Rico said in disbelief of the order.
"I'm the one they left in charge! Shut up and follow your orders!" Dietrich said while lowering his arms. "We can't leave Jaeger defenseless. I'm changing the plan. We protect Jaeger from the Titans until we can retrieve him." He said as you all turned to the unresponsive Titan Eren. "He's still valuable as one of humanity's last hopes. We cannot just abandon him like this. We can be replaced, but he can't be." He stated the importance of Eren as Rico tried to reason with him.
"The failure of that dysfunctional human weapon has already cost several hundred lives! You're saying we should bring him back, so this can happen again?" Rico tried pinning a hard argument, but Captain Dietrich wasn't having it.
"That's right. We must try as many times as necessary, regardless of the cost in lives!" Dietrich held his orders and position on the situation as his fellow Captains were beyond shocked.
"Finally, someone with a head on his shoulders..." You said while brushing pass him and the other two as you waved a hand. "I'll take care of the two Titans at the front, you tell those idiots where to go. See ya." You said as you fired your anchor into a nearby tower before turning to Mikasa. "I'll leave Eren to you. Take care, Mikasa." You said before flying off.
"Y/N!" Mikasa called for you, but Dietrich stopped her from chasing you.
"It's fine. He can clearly handle a few Titans himself. I was going to have him join my squad anyways..." Dietrich said before turning his attention back to Rico and Mitabi.
"Ian, are you serious?!" Rico said in disbelief of her comrade.
"How else should humanity defeat the Titans? Rico, tell me! Is there any other way to get ourselves out of this mess? Some way to maintain our human dignity, without more deaths?! How can we counter the Titans' overwhelming advantage over us?" Dietrich tried explaining the gravity of things now that they potentially have a Titan on their side.
"As if I'd know of a way to defeat them!" Rico said in frustration of not being able to answer him.
"That's right...So for the moment, this is all we can and should do. We must be willing to sacrifice our lives and do our best for that incomprehensible human weapon." Dietrich said as the two of them remained silent. "Pathetic, isn't it? But as humans, it's all we can do. Now, what will you do? This is the only battle we can fight. This is the struggle we've been allowed to engage." Dietrich said as they continued to remain silent, and Mikasa noticed he was looking back at her with a contemplating look on his face.
"I can't accept that." Rico said in a spiteful tone while turning and walking away.
"Rico!" Dietrich called her back.
"I'll obey the order." Rico replied while continuing to face her back to him as he was shocked. "I think what you're saying is right. But as we struggle our hardest, we'll also show them how terrifying humans can be. I refuse to die for nothing. Leave the twelve meter class behind us to my squad." Was all she said before walking off, followed by Mitabi who headed towards the front where you were.
"Let's go. Our target will be the two in the front--huh?" Mitabi stopped himself when he saw you suddenly land back on the roof and approach them as steaming blood came off your jacket.
"I actually spotted four smaller Titans hiding among buildings West of here and took care of those instead. The only other one's are the two at the front, Captain Dietrich." You said as you dropped your dull blades off the roof and equipped a fresh pair. "If you don't mind, I'll instead choose to stay and guard Eren." You said as Mitabi was shocked at your fighting abilities, and Dietrich just nodded.
"Y-Yeah, that's fine." Was all Dietrich said as Mitabi just shook himself from his shock and ran off to the fight.
"Thank you, Captain Ian." Mikasa thanked him for getting the to reconsider.
"Ackerman, there's no need to thank me. I was terrified because there's no telling what you two would do. Do as you like, just as in the original plan. That will be more efficient use of your abilities." Dietrich said to Mikasa while drawing one of his blades.
"Yes, sir." Mikasa understood as Ian turned to you.
"Y/N, I get how you feel about your friend, but don't take it out on them so hard. They're just trying their best right now." Dietrich said to you while you sighed lowered your head abit.
"Yes, sir. Sorry..." You apologized as he turned back to the direction he was going to head off in.
"Take care. You two have to protect her boyfriend." Ian said as you almost choked on air, meanwhile Mikasa blushed and looked down.
"We're family." Mikasa said as you two awkwardly glanced at each other before averting your gazes once more as Dietrich ran off to the fight.
"But still..." You said while walking over next to her as you both stared down at Eren. "...What do we do about ol' punchy over here?" You said as the two of you stared at Eren in wonder and contemplation as thigs were now at a massive stand still in the mission.
"What?" Mikasa said in shock as you looked at her in confusion. "The damaged parts aren't regenerating?" Mikasa said in confusion as you looked back to Eren and saw that the hands he lost and face he smashed were not healing.
"Huh? Why? Could it be from the damage he sustained earlier?" You said with worry now filling both of you.
"What will that do to Eren? And is there any guarantee he can regain human form?" Mikasa wondered before shaking her head and thinking rationally again. "No, let's stop for now." She said as you turned to her. "We won't be able to find answers to these question. For now, let's just do what we can." Was all she said as you nodded in agreement and readied yourselves to defend Eren.
After some time had passed, the military was having trouble keeping Titans from wandering about once more. Mitabi and Dietrich, along with their squads, were corralling Titans and cutting down whichever ones were getting close to Eren. After some dust, cleared from Mitabi's face, he was shocked when he saw a Titan reaching out to grab him. A few seconds later though, you flew in between the two and cut off the Titan's hand as Mikasa appeared from above and sliced the nape of the monster, killing it as its corpse fell and leaned against the building Mitabi was on while he was on his rear end. You and Mikasa landed near him as you grabbed him by the arm to try and help him up.
"Hey! Get up, old man! This ain't the time to be sight seeing, ya know?" You groaned while helping him to his feet.
"This is bad! Behind us!" Dietrich said with worry as you all turned to see a Titan climbing over the buildings and heading to Eren.
"A thirteen meter class! It's approaching Jaeger!" A soldier yelled out.
"Idiot! Do something about it then!" You groaned as you flew off once more and cut down the Titan as you were huffing air and dropped your second pair of dull blades.
"More Titans coming through the hole! Four Titan, approximately ten meter class!" Someone spotted the incoming Titans as you couldn't believe how endless they seemed.
"Ackerman, go back and check for any Titans that may have snuck through the streets. L/N, head back with her and regroup with Rico and her squad." Dietrich said as Mikasa ran off.
"Yes, sir!" Mikasa yelled.
"Dammit, there's no end to this shit! Now I gotta help four eyes?!" You groaned while flying off with a new pair of blades equiped.
"Don't let it near Jaeger! We'll stop them here!" Ian yelled as Mitabi acknowledged his order and prepared himself once again while you and Mikasa ran across the rooftops back to Eren.
"Dammit! Even if they are elite, two squads can't handle that many...!" You said in frustration as Mikasa spotted a Titan climbing over a building that was next to Eren.
In an instant, she anchored herself to the back of the Titan's neck and flew in for the kill. She struck the Titan with great force that it crashed hard against the roof of the building as she stood atop its corpse. As she stood to look around, you landed next to her and spoke up.
"This is bad..." You said as you and her noticed the countless Titans walking about the city, more importantly, coming closer to Eren's location.
"No...Why are there so many Titans? There aren't too many people there." Mikasa said as you scoffed at a possible reason for this.
"You've gotta be kidding me...Is that why...? Is Eren somehow attracting these things to himself?" You spoke through gritted teeth as a voice suddenly called out to you two.
"Y/N! Mikasa!" You heard as the two of you looked over at Eren to see Armin standing on top of him, indicating he left his post. "What happened to the plan?" Armin yelled in confusion.
"Armin!" Mikasa yelled in shock of seeing him.
"Hey, get away from him! He's not himself and you could get hurt!" You yelled in worry.
"What happened to Eren?" Armin asked as he continued to stand atop his Titanic friends unconscious body.
"It's dangerous! Move back! Eren is completely unable to enact his will through that Titan! We spoke to it, but it didn't recognize us! There's no point in anyone else trying!" Mikasa said as a crash was heard nearby and you gripped your blades tighter.
"Sorry, Mikasa. I've gotta go. Take care of Armin!" You yelled as you proceeded towards the direction Rico had headed towards.
"What about the plan?" Armin asked.
"It failed. Everyone's fighting because we can't leave Eren. But there are too many...Before long, they'll wipe us out!" Mikasa explained the grave situation everyone was in as Armin was even more nervous and shocked as he turned to the nape of Eren's Titan.
As he stared with great intent at that one spot, he remembered how from before, Eren reappeared from the nape of his Titan. The very same spot that you all targeted in order to kill the large monsters. Then, in those moments, an idea came to fruition in his mind as he gripped onto the hilt of his blade.
"The spot on the back of the neck, ten centimeters across and a meter high." Armin repeated to himself the fundamentals of the spot while he unsheathed a blade.
"Armin!" Mikasa yelled in worry as he replied in a determined voice.
"I'll get Eren out of here! You protect us from any Titans!" Armin yelled as she went wide-eyed and was filled with confusion of what he was saying.
"What are you saying?" Mikasa asked him as Armin walked over to the center of Eren, just below his nape.
"Eren came out f the Titan's vital point." Armin raised his triggers and anchored fully into Eren's body for support. "It's probably related to the mystery behind them. Don't worry. As long as I avoid striking it in the center, he won't die. It'll just hurt...a tiny bit!" He yelled as he plunged his blade down.
"Armin...!" Mikasa yelled in fear as the blade punctured through Eren's skin flesh, and within the nape, Eren's human arm was pierced at the bicep as his clouded eyes widened.
In that exact moment, steam erupted from the wounds and Eren's Titan roared in pain while flailing about against the boulder. Its screams were ear piercing and its spasms were fierce as Armin held on for dear life to try and not be flung away.
"Armin, that's insane! Stop!" Mikasa pleaded with him.
"Mikasa, do what you can! If you go, some lives might be saved! Leave Eren to me!" Armin said as Mikasa was completely against it, but decided to have faith in Armin and his actions as she turned away and ran off to support anyone she could, meanwhile Armin spoke into the wound. "Eren, can you hear me? Come to your senses!" His voice reverbed off the blade and the waves reached Eren faintly enough to hear. "If we don't get out of here, we'll all die! Don't let the Titan's body take over! Just come out of that lump of flesh, now! Eren! Get out of there! Hurry! Eren! Eren!" Armin begged, but there was still no response as he began to pound away at his nape with his fist. "What happened to avenging your mother? Aren't you going to wipe out the Titans? Don't you hate the things that killed your mother?!" Armin tried to bring Eren back, but inside Eren's mind, he was looking at him from his window while in his home with his whole family.
"What are you talking about, Armin?" Eren, who appeared as a child, turned to see his mother and Mikasa doing dishes together. "Mom's right here..." He thought as he stared at her from where he sat.
"Eren! Eren! Wake up, Eren! You're still in there, aren't you? If we stay here, the Titans will kill us! Everything will end here!" Armin tried to get Eren to snap out of whatever he was under, but it wasn't working as Eren stared at him from behind the window.
"Like I said...I don't understand you, Armin. Why do I have to leave?" Eren turned to look at his beloved home and family. "Yeah...Why would I want to leave?" His thoughts lingered before he suddenly remembered something that made him uneasy. "Why would I want to join the Survey Corps?" He thought to himself as his family suddenly turned towards him with peaceful looks.
"Eren...Eren! Eren! Eren!" Armin spoke softer, but still held that desperate look on his face as he could only imagine the chaos you and everyone were enduring.
The sound of flesh and blood splattering in the air was all you could hear as you were once again covered in hot blood and sweat. You breathed heavily as you dropped your fourth pair of dull blades and drew your last set of blades. Just then, you collared to one knee when you felt a piercing pain run from your arm and all the way up to your head. You held your arm tightly and groaned as you struggled back to your feet and looked at the countless Titans that still roamed about.
"D-Dammit...I can't stop...at a time like this...!" You struggled back to your feet as you heard a cry of horror nearby and rushed off to that person's aid while Armin spoke once more to Eren.
"Eren...One day, we're going to explore the outside world, right?" Armin's voice echoed in the manifested world Eren had created as his eyes widened from hearing something similar before. "Far beyond these walls is flaming water! Frozen earth! Snow-white plains of sand! The world my mom and dad tried to see..." Memories of the things they saw in Armin's book began to fill Eren's mind as he began to remember. "I thought maybe you'd forgotten. But the reason you stopped mentioning it was because you didn't want me to join the Survey Corps, right?" Armin said as Eren was beginning to realize more and more what he had forgotten.
"The outside world?" Eren repeated to himself in his hallucination as he rose from where he sat and the blanket he was wrapped around in dropped to the floor as his family continued to silent stare at him.
"Eren...Answer me! You knew that hell was one step beyond the walls. You might die horribly like my mom and dad did. So why did you want to go?" Armin asked as Eren turned away from his family and looked at Armin through the window.
"Why?" Eren said as he gritted his teeth and remembered his reasons. "You know why...Because I was born into this world!" He said as his fiery rage returned and the world around became engulfed in flames, his family and everything around him turning to ash as he remembered his purpose.
As he answered this in his subconscious, Eren's outer Titan body suddenly roared to life as Armin jumped away to a nearby roof top. Eren's Titan quickly rose from the ground with his wounds now completely healed and his body exerting extraordinary amounts of heat. Armin smiled with joy and hope as his friend had reawakened from his delusion, and now there was a real chance for humanity to strike back.
