Cass enters her apartment after a long night shift, sniffing as she takes off her coat. She's ready for a warm bath, a glass of wine, and then a good fucking sleep, preferably in that order, but she wasn't picky in this moment.
Her phone buzzes in her pocket as she moves to the kitchen to grab the wine and a cork screw, letting it go straight to voicemail. Then it rings again.
And a third.
Cass lets out an irritated sigh, slamming the bottle on the counter, she answers it right away.
"Hello?"
"Hello, Cassius."
What. The. Fuck.
"You have five fucking seconds to tell me what the fuck you want before I slam this phone down and shatter it into a million pieces." The quick worded-threat rolls right off Cass's tongue as her eyes burn in anger.
"Well, hello to you too, mate."
Cassius clicks her tongue. "Four."
"Alright, alright. Keep your panties on, will ya?"
Cass swipes up the bottle in her hands and launches it at the wall.
"Goodbye." Cass hums, going to pull the phone away from her ear.
"Translucent!" The ignorantly impatient man on the other line yells.
"Mmm, you're lucky I even gave you five." Cass narrows her eyes at the screen as she brings it back up.
Although impatience bubbles up in her frequently, she's come to learn that there are those who are far more of it than her, and patience is key to getting what you want.
"What about him—" She cuts through the air. "Is so important that you decided to bother me on a rather pleasant morning." Her teeth clench together.
He's lucky she let the conversation pass one second. He doesn't need to waste anymore.
"The cunt is dead. We blew the fucker up from the inside out. C4 right up his ars-"
Cass lets out a deep chuckle, leaning her body against the counter as to not double over in laughter.
"Ah. I must be dreaming." She says in between laughs, wiping a fake tear away. "Because otherwise I know that Billy fucking Butcher would be stupid enough to call me about a dead Supe." Her words come out slowly.
"The cunt coughed up a led." Butcher tells her.
"Hmm, so you are a fucking idiot. Or just dead I suppose." Cass inhales sharply, dragging her finger along the marble of the counter, jaw tightening.
"I still got ya here, don't I?" Butcher presses. "Look, sweetheart, a woman with your talents shouldn't be wasted. This is the closest we've ever been, we killed a Seven for fucksake." He spouts off, signing in frustration. He knew this conversation wouldn't be easy, but it doesn't chap his arse non the less.
"And how many people had to pay the price for you to get there?" Her tone snaps ice cold. "Hmm?" She clicks her tongue once again. "I'm waiting."
Butcher heaves another sigh. "Look, do you wanna have another go?"
"Does hell freeze over at night or just during the day?" She fires back.
He chuckles. "This time will be different. I swear it."
She laughs once again. "Oh, Butcher." She leans up, keeping her elbows pressed against the marble. "You should stop making promises you can't keep."
"I can promise you that this time will be different. We'll take 'em all down. Seven, Vought. We have a real go at it." Butcher makes his play. "Come on, what do you've got to lose?"
Well, at this point? Fuck nothing.
"You can stop playing nurse, and come make a real fucking difference." Butcher adds, grinning ear to ear.
"Mmm, you've been keeping tabs, how cute." Cassius snips, rolling her eyes.
"I have on all you lot." Butcher says.
"Almost as if you care, wish I believed that." She purses her lips together. "You just wanna know where we are for your disposal." She lays the truth on thick, not in the mood for anything else.
She hums out a sigh irritatedly as she glances around the room. She has a gorgeous apartment, but she knows where she truly belongs. And it's not here.
"Is he coming back too?" She spits out like venom.
Butcher chuckles. "Uh-uh. Last I heard, he was behind bars for a short bit." He lies just as he did with M.M. Though he made her no such promise in telling the truth, knowing better, she isn't as gullible as M.M. is... people choose to believe what they want to. What they want to see out of a person. M. M.'s flaw, just as it is many others.
Where he belongs Cass thinks to herself, temporary, unfortunately.
She throws her head back, already regretting the words that slip off the tongue. "You get me for only one try. You fail, you're on your fucking own."
"Wouldn't have it any other way." Butcher smirks through the phone, practically foaming at the mouth of what she'll do to his brother when she finds out he's back too. He could use a good swift kick or two.
"I imagine since you have my number, you'll send me a location?" Her lips press together.
"Right as rain." Butcher chirps.
"Great." Cass chimes flatly before ending the call and slamming her phone down on the counter.
She rakes her hands down her smooth face, pulling at the loose strands of hair as she does.
She isn't a fool. She knows this time won't be any different.
But she can't seem to find it in her to care...
She's just ready for some fun.
She steps over to the red liquid dripping off to the floor.
"Well, guess I'll have another then." And she does in fact mean the whole bottle. "Cheers." She swirls the bottle around in a circle before bringing the sweetly-bitter drink to her lips.
After two sips her phone dings with a location.
This time will be different...
It sure as hell will.
