Waiting for Rain
Spring day hints of summer
Thermometer is red
All my neighbors mowing
And dig in garden beds
When my errands are done
I sit upon my deck
And feel my long dark hair
Tickle upon my neck
Gray clouds are drifting in
There will be rain tonight
And that's okay with me
For seeds will sprout with light
A little brown sparrow
Pulls dry grass from the ground
Flies away with booty
To weave a nest that's round
Red, white and blue wind sock
Sails up upon dark roof
And with the next wind blast
Drops down in showy spoof
Gusts of wind knock tree seeds
Groups twirl and spin to ground
Nature's parachutes drop
And land with little sound
Cardinal and blue jay
Stop by to grab some nuts
Watch tiny chickadee
Drop nuts, he's such a klutz
Gray clouds have disappeared
Bright sun is streaming down
So, on my deck I'll sit
Until raindrops reach town
