Summer's Solider
Rain is coming
With dark of night
But through today
Heat is our blight
Hot winds rustle
And tree bough sway
My skin still burns
In shadow's spray
Leaves scorched gray brown
Hang limp on stems
Hot heat too much
For fragile gems
Plants have withdrawn
Into brown soil
Tough roots will rest
Through winter's toil
As sun's rays blaze
And fall begins
A summer solider
Splits green bud skins
Zinnias bloom
A final stand
Tough garden flower
Big as my hand
Red, yellow, white
Orange and pink
Colors still splash
As bright as ink
I will collect
Heads of your seed
Leaving most for
Birds winter feed
